Metallica were unique compared the other “thrash metal bands”. Metallica did their first ballad on ride the lightning, “Fade to black”. A great song.
Also had soft songs or part or songs on most albums, Orion on Master, One & To Live Is To Die on Justice, Unforgiven & Nothing on Black album, etc.
I agree, their songwriting is beyond any other metal I've heard. They've got soft songs, deep and emotional ballads, frenzied thrash, and some songs even kind of cross genre's like I think Mama Said is almost a country tune.
Granted, there is a ton of great metal artists out there, but I think Metallica definitely earned their place at the top.
Wow. Metallica is out of this solar system. There will never be another band greater then metallica....salute..i bow down to you, james, lars ,cliff, jason and kirk..
The story I heard was that James was hesitant to present this song to the band because it was more a ballad and was so personally emotional. I’m glad he did and that they were open to it
Helene Spaulding, you are correct. He was sweating bullets, because he thought that the band would laugh at him. But, I forget who exactly it was, but it was 1 of James' friend's, that found it on his(James) desk, as they were drinking, and they asked him about it, and James told him that he thought that the band was going to reject it and laugh at him for it. But, his buddy got him the confidence to present it to the band, and the rest is history, as we listen to it, as much as we love to...
@@undrtakr2222 He was “Sweating Bullets” 😳😳😳 and it was Kirk that first found out about it and later convinced James to get it to the other band members
@Norman Smithers I LOVE the one where she snd James sing it together.
@Norman Smithers yes, I’ve heard both. I LOVE the one with both Metallica and Miley…….Love Eltons piano playing in that version .
@Norman Smithers agreed! They should tour together. Miley’s voice is now perfectly suited to this kind of music….
James was brought to tears when Sir Elton John said it was one of the greatest songs ever written.james plays lead on this one too.
His words,not mine.
@Dragon Ball fans can't read obviously just opinions but this is a very well written song
@Dragon Ball fans can't read it wasn't your opinion, that he was talking about. He said it was Elton John, who said that. But, with a name like your's, I don't believe that it really matter's what you have to say, anyway. So, if you want someone to actually care about your opinion's? How about you go and take the path through your bedroom and go find your mommy and ask her? Just sayin...
@Dragon Ball fans can't read Elton John is one of the best song writers ever, so his opinion goes pretty far
@Dragon Ball fans can't read let’s see your top 10 best songs ever written then
For me, having the video to watch with the song goes much further. The heavy rock and metal clans seem to really appreciate great, meaningful lyrics.
Do you mean you would like to see the lyrics video? I try to put the lyrics up on the screen while I read them, maybe I need to make them bigger?
No, hun. I mean the visual message goes well with the lyrics. 🙂
@@SyedRewinds the original video the band made to go with the song. Lyric videos are just a distraction .
James Hetfield, the singer, wrote the song for his girlfriend that he was missing so much at the time. Lars and Bob Rock overheard him playing it and was like ," wow! What is that!!"?? So James initially didn't want it on the album because it was so personal to him but eventually gave in, and that's the story of "Nothing Else Matters "
This track has always been one of my favorites. Hetfield is absolutely roaring with the vocals, but it's still a ballad. Even in metal ballads, that's rare. Most singers take a calmer tone for these songs. He takes a peaceful, melodic tone without compromising that raw power.
If you're looking for a more eclectic list of Metallica songs, they did an amazing cover of Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Tuesday's Gone".
Also look at
"Whiskey in the Jar 'O" (Classic old drinking song)
"Mamma Said" - venturing into a kind of country twang on a metal ballad.
"One" is iconic and powerful... look into the backstory on that.
"The Unforgiven" - actually a trilogy of songs, though the first, from the black album is the best known.
Metallica does a love song... and it rocks, hard.
I'm just overjoyed, that people are enjoying the music at any age. Pretty fun, honestly
You need to react to them live. I suggest Welcome Home Sanitarium live in Seattle 1989! It's amazing!!! Or just do the studio version. Either way they both rock!!
Please (PLEASE) do studio versions before live versions...unless you've already heard the song.
Hetfield really is a fantastic songwriter and lyricist. It's nice that he gets his due. Going way back, a lot of metal bands didn't get the credit they deserve. Metal is a very, very vast genre of music filled with some of the most incredible musicians and writers on the planet.
Gotta say I'm into your style and so far you are on point with your insight on the music. Not many get it right but you usually do.
Thanks Jonathan, just enjoying making these vids
But he got the meaning of this song wrong.
@@metalmellie4371
Music is up to interpretation by the listener. That being said, every reaction and analysis I've seen from him he always gives coherent and understandable options and insights into the songs he listens to. Even if there's a different interpretation you can always see where he got his idea from as he never tries to be fair fetched with his views.
I know it sounds utterly absurd, but if you listen to the Miley Cyrus duet with James Hetfield and the band of this song on The Howard Stern Show, it is amazing how well their voices mesh. I think it actually adds to it
You beat me to it. Was gonna say the same thing. I’m no big fan of Miley Cyrus, but her voice on this song is just fantastic. I gained new respect for her.
Im not surprised Helene, Miley actually has a great voice
@@maggieshevelew7579 me too!
@@SyedRewinds check it out! You’ll like it!
Truuue, when I saw the thumbnail I was a bit skeptical, but I thought her performance was awesome.
Wonderful. Next think about doing Fade to Black, Master of Puppets, or Sanitarium. 😀 Please.
James has had a troubled past. Many of their songs are reflections of his life’s struggles which is why so many of us can relate to their music. We all have struggled at some point in life.
I saw an interview about James on the Howard Stern show. Howard said that he had read James' book, and that his life was a real shit show! It is even a miracle that he is a live. I think after James' success with Metallica, when the 90's came, his life view changed! He had a love for life and everything around him. This is James finally opening himself up again to life! Maybe even love!
The greatest metal band of all time.
Disturbed - Sound of Silence is an amazing cover.
Metal balads are some of best songs ever recorded
Power, heavy, emotional
Metallica has done plenty of ballads. And there all amazing
I missed 90s week? I am a 90s Music Expert!! 'Sleeping Satellite" by Tasmin Archer...she won Best New Artist 1993...she is a Brit. This is a gem!
You should listen to the "Unforgiven" trilogy by Metallica. All 3 are great songs.
Elton John called this one of the best songs ever written. Elton John, one of the best songwriters of all time.
James was on phone strumming his guitar and came up with the opening line. Song is about missong your loved ones
Great reaction. Hope you react to more Metallica in the future. They have been my favorite band since I was 3 and I can’t remember my first reaction to all these songs so for me it’s very entertaining to see other peoples reactions.
James was learning classical guitar when this song was written. You should also check out Unforgiven and Unforgiven II which have a similar “ballady” sensibility but also some harder edges.
The most beautiful tune, love ❤️ it
Gotta check out fade to black by Metallica next
You’re in for a fun ride with Metallica. 💯🔥
I've always seen this song from an outsiders perspective.
Trust in yourself. What others do or say doesn't matter.
This song has always empowered me.
They also have an acoustic version of that song that I got as a B-Side of a single. Named Nothing Else Matters (Elevator Version) where you can really hear the orchestra in the back.
I think that James was on the phone to a buddy and strumming his guitar when the opening sequence formed and he immediately said "oops I gotta run!"
Essentially it's a song about loneliness and longing, emptiness when on the road. Hatfield once said that he would awaken with a different woman everyday in his bed with no idea how she had got there after a crazy previous evening and would feel immense resentment at the woman and lifestyle.
His vocal technique was better and he was able to explore more avenues of his range.
*Hetfield*
Master of Puppets 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘
Coming up for sure Stig!
Classic track👍 seriously need to check out AC/DC Thunderstruck live at the River Plate.
Its on the list now Dave. Any non live tracks you suggest?
@@SyedRewinds Highway to Hell, You Shook Me All Night Long. AC/DC are a good time rock and roll band, no fancy lyrics just music to make you love life 👌
You gotta turn that shit up bro
Who in their right mind still thinks hip hop is actual music after seeing what musicians actually do.
👌🤘
Gotta do master of puppets by Metallica. Brilliant writing and song set up that depicts drug addiction with the fast and slow tempo of the song
If you get an opportunity, listen to this song with the orchestra i.e. The S&M concert.
Awesome reaction!! Love it ❤️👍🏼
This song is about Cliff Burton the original bass player for Metallica who died in a bus crash in Denmark in 1986 while they were touring their 3rd album 'Master of Puppets". A tour bus the whole band were all on at the time. He plays bass on the song "for whom the Bell tolls" you reacted to. You may think the bass doesn't really matter in metal but listen to that song without it...I have. Cliff Burton was an amazing musician and could play any instrument, he was a gentle hippy soul who never really got angry or bought into the whole fame or fortune thing, he was just himself, trusted in it with an open mind. Hence the line. The song "Orion" on the Master of Puppets album is completely instrumental. Cliff wrote every piece of music for every instrument on that track and plays every instrument on that track also. Obviously he played one instrument at a time and put it all together to create a song. Just an amazing man who is one of the top three artists I would bring back along with Bon Scott and Kurt Cobain.
No. Cliff did bass. James on rythmn. Kirk did lead guitar. Lars on the drums.
I believe your thinking of Brad Delp from the band Boston.
Err it's not about Cliff, and Cliff didn't write and record everything on Orion.
So that'll be a double fail!
One song in a heavier style of metal id love to see you react to is No Gods, No Masters by Arch Enemy. It's a subgenre of metal called 'melodic death metal' and the lyrics are absolutely beautiful yet powerful - not unlike their singer at the time, angela gossow
I was lucky enough to see them live in Montreal back in 2011, killer act. Special shoutout to their drummer, Daniel Erlandsson. What a machine
Can't wait until he hears Master of Puppets for the first time🤟
Still unique...Metallica will never die!!
Now, take into consideration, that the iconic pianist Elton John, admitted to the band, that this IS the best song ever written! He did a duet with Miley Cyrus, a little while ago. And, he was excited about it, because he loved the song, as he was listening to Metallica doing it. So, for such a big iconic musician, as Elton John, to tell you, that you wrote the best song, that they have ever heard? That's like, huge! I still say, that you need to check out the concert, that has been in the Guinness Book Of World Record's, that also happens to be from Metallica, as well as other bands, that were there and played on different stages, the 1991 Moscow concert, with Metallica doing 1 of their most iconic song's, "Enter Sandman". On the other reaction I saw, you were amazed at how they were having crowd's of 1/2M people. Well, what if I were to tell you, that at the 91' Moscow concert, they had over 1.6M people who attended the concert!? And, you should also do a reaction to their song "One". But, when you do the reaction to One, you really should watch the official video, as it will give you a much better perspective on what it's all about. Which, it's derived from an old book, that was written in the 1800's, if I remember correctly. And, in the early 1900's, they made a movie about the book. And, Metallica bought the right's to the movie, so they could use it in their music video. And, let's just say, when you think that you have a clue about how good they really are? Then, you watch the video of One? You start questioning whether you have any idea at all, about their abilities with their instruments and the poetic writing of their song's! And, James Hatfield is one of the heaviest writers of the lyrics of their song's, as he is also the vocalist and the rhythm guitar player, Lars Ulrich is the drummer, Kirk Hammett is the lead guitar player, while they have had a few bass guitar players. Which, 1 of their beginning bass guitarists, is the lead singer and creator of the band Megadeth...
Metal and rock have the best ballads... you can't be hardcore the entire álbum, they have to have pauses, even during the concert.. it makes it longer and pleasant...
You commented on your for whom the bell tolls video that they performed in front of half a million fans. Moscow in 1991 was in front of one and a half million. Check out some of their videos of that event. It has just about the best live version of bell tolls ever, and harvester of sorrow. Everyone seems to like enter sandman though. I don't really care for that song other than it's kinda fun to play on guitar.
My absolute favorite video from '91 Moscow, is their performance of "Creeping Death." Epically powerful. 🤘
You really should react to to One.
Mettalica SFO version is epic!
That's the begining of the end.
Time to step it up to WHIPLASH &Blitzkrieg.
I think this song kind of marks the band maturing out of that rebellious angry youth phase into a more nuanced and art focused music. Not that they weren't epic and smart in their early works, they just mellowed a bit and relaxed into just making their music their way instead of trying to live up to the expectations of their audience.
'The Unforgiven" Metallica
If you want something heavy and crazy from them listen to creeping death from them
It is also from ride the lightning
There is a few songs that you really need to listen to by Metallica the first one is harvester of sorrow the original video, the second one is and justice for all live in 1989 the third one is enter Sandman live in Moscow the fourth one is Master of puppets you might want to pull up the lyrics on that one lol
People hate this album because they finally grew up and made an adult album. And not just a bunch of screaming kids playing fast!
Haha the sound is defo more mature
I agree! I def like the old stuff also, I’m a huge Metallica fan. But something about the black album just hits to the core!
There’s also a symphony playing in the back around! Refer to Metallica S&M. I’m not totally impressed with that album but, No leaf clover is a good original tune!! I’m to stuck on the original tracks.
'Down in a Hole" Alice in Chains
Listen to the Symphony & Metallica version of this song. Even better listen to the entire S&M concert ;) Metallicas best songs backed by the full San Fransico philharmonic orchestra.
If you really want to get into some interesting things especially with your background in HIP HOP try listening to Rage Against the Machine. Bullet In The Head is great. Know your Enemy is great. Also checkout some things in the Progressive Metal / Rock Genres. You'll find those guys get lots of hits on react channels due to the followings they bring. You are looking for RUSH (Considered one of the best progressive rock groups of all time. Will blow your mind musicianship wise especially only being 3 people). Look for Dream Theater for progressive Metal. Quite possibly some of the best musicianship you can find in a band today. Tool will also provide you with some amazing progressive metal tunes. Sober is great. Get the live version if you can. I dig your channel and your vibe man. Keep doing good things reacting to good music.
C'mon dude don't ever forget his name, James Hetfield or the others. This is the greatest thrash metal band in human history and in mankind's future.
This song is a love song for his ex.
In one of your videos I watched (couldn't remember if it was this one or not) you requested obscure 90's bands. I have one for you. The band is called Cool for August. They only put out 2 albums, but man they're good. Here is a link to the hidden track on their album Grand World. ruclips.net/video/hMovkEZKTa4/видео.html The name of the song is "Spinning." If you like this one, you should check out "Sylmar" and "Denial." Pretty much everything on the Grand World album is worth a listen. I can put it on repeat.
It’s actually about a break up James Hetfield ent through
there was not a bad song on this album
this song was for a now ex girlfriend. i wouldn't call this a ballad. fade to black is a ballad, the un forgiven is a ballad not this...but that's just me
A lot of Rock and Metal bands would put softer songs on an album and the next track would hit harder. If you go flat out all the time it loses impact. Sabbath were masters of this.
Very true, the slower moments make the peaks better
@@SyedRewinds Black Sabbath: ‘Changes’ is a great ballad.
He wrote the it as a love song to his girlfriend.
I like your color, Barbie boy!
Either Syed has a fan on him or he has Dr. Strange wiggle hair.
Hahaha this made me chuckle. Ive been training my hair to do this for years. Finally someone noticed 😎
I think this song is about his wife
The black album is awesome. BTW - Metallica is better live, just wanna throw that in there to encourage more live reactions.

Over rated band. They have a few good tunes this being one of them. Check out some Stone Temple Pilots
Stone Temple Pilots suck. Indie rock sucks.
Well… excellent vocals, great drumming, great guitar playing , good lyrics…..very influential in the metal world…. that makes them overrated? I like STP too….. but it’s all a matter of taste. I don’t think you can say, objectively, that Metallica is overrated. That it’s not your bag ….that I get.
@@helenespaulding7562 great drumming where
Gotta disagree Jim, I've been impressed by their lyricism and musicianship so far
@@brucedickinson12 I’m not saying that Lars is on a level with Bonham, Peart or Danny Carey. He might mot even be in the top 20 rock/metal drummers. That doesn’t mean that he’s not a damn good drummer and fits Metallica’s needs. And it doesn’t mean that Metallica isn’t a very fine band.
