J None was a member of VoicePlay but he was recruited by the US Navy for his vocal talents. He's been gone for 2 years and has 3 or 4 years to go. When he's on leave he comes home and gets a video and some minis or shorts. You can find J None in VPs list: Tennessee Whiskey, Friends on the Other Side (after boot camp), Warriors, Man in the Mirror and many more. Geoff had written the guitar solo for Layne since Metallica had one there but near the shooting date, he asked Layne to use his violin; hence, the moniker VioLayne. It's been 3 yrs since we heard him do this in Warriors all the way through and J None also did a few lines with his violin.

That crazy high note when the violin comes out is Eli. It was not part of the arrangement, Eli was just feeling it and went for it.
Layne could beatbox and violin here, but they thought it looked silly.
Also, nope. Cesar was not doubled. That second higher & breathy voice is Layne. He was singing prior to dropping the beat too.
You can hear him better in their cover of True Colors. He sings more there than in any other of their songs.
For a great one featuring J None, check out their “Tennessee Whiskey”.

Don't feel bad about going longer; David K Reacts analysis video for this is over an hour.
Yes, Eli's name rhymes with jelly. In his varied career he has sung lead for a metal band. On one of the takes he decided to go an octave higher than Geoff's arrangement called for. They kept it. He has amazing breath control. In Ride, there is a passage that has no room for a breath so long he nearly passed out while learning it.
    J. None was a full time member for about four years before he was recruited by the Navy. They filmed Friends On the Other Side when he was home on leave in 2021. (Geoff used the same backdrop in Way Down.)
Layne has studied violin since at least a teenager. See him and another VP member play violin in Warriors. Technically Layne can go lower than Geoff... with sound effects, not singing. He can use an inhale technique to get down into the basement, like he did in Enemy, and I think that's him making the "frog burp" sound here. He did beatbox while playing violin but they decided it didn't look good here so he's double tracked.
Geoff says he doesn't do the inhale thing because it hurts and it does not sound good when he does it. He proved his point in a tutorial vid.

@@toddmaliepaard9777 He's modified his format since starting, and now does a simple reaction view, brief discussion, then another play with a detailed analysis. Which is why they've been getting longer. You can choose how much to watch. I find value in the full thing but usually break it up into multiple viewing sessions.

You’ve heard J.None before. He was in Waving Through a Window and Go The Distance, and also in Warriors (the other cover you mentioned where Layne plays violin-and so does J.None). He was a member of Voiceplay until a couple years ago when he left to sing for the Navy. (Also, I don’t see it in your playlist but you have to have heard Oogie Boogie’s Song, right?) Anyway, J.None still comes back to sing with these guys when he gets leave and we’re all hoping he’ll be back for good when he’s done with the Navy.
You’re right that Layne can beatbox and play violin-they just decided it didn’t look good for this video (or so I hear). I think i have to agree because he’s playing the thing like a boss and I think making vocal perc faces would detract a bit. LOL.
Great reaction, Daniel! If you haven’t heard some other songs with J.None, go back to the oldies cuz there’s lots of good stuff.

  • @blayneallsen
    @blayneallsen Год назад +1

At 18:15, the sound you heard is made by Layne, I believe it's done on an inhale too. 18:32 The high notes are done by Eli, you can see the strain on his face as he drops down from the high notes to those more breathy tones

We miss J. None but he has been gone from the group for about eighteen months. He was with the group for about four years. He left the group summer of 2021 and signed up for five years in the Navy. He is currently the new frontman for Navy Band Northwest! Go!! J. On his first leave, he did Friends On The Other Side with the group. He has done some remote minis with the guys and he was on leave again at home to Florida and did this and maybe three minis with the guys. It always feels like he never left. Say HELLO to #VIOLAYNE!!! Amazing surprise and love it.

Great reaction and a lot of good observations. I have trouble processing auditorily, so try to watch as many reactors (who do more than react with funny faces) as I can, since you all notice different things. I love that stacking effect they do on the “I” that you pointed out. And thank you for pointing out the changes they made on vowel sounds that opened up that portion where their voices swelled.
You mentioned the camera shake. They have more resources now, but in Geoff’s 16 Tons, the camera shakes were done by his wife Kathy (his only crew). She just literally tapped the camera to get that effect. I think that camera was stationary, so they might have done the same thing here.
I know you have seen J before, but since his time in the Navy, he is very sculpted these days so looks different. His voice has also matured somewhat, and this was a little deeper than he customarily has sung. Among the other ones, people have commented on, you might check out Carry on Wayward Son and Kiss.

It's six and a half minutes long because they kept it very true to the original song. I saw another reactor note that Layne's beatboxing in this one is mimicking, not just real drums, but drums played in the style of 80s/90s rock. Ahaha, and another "What just happened?!?" for VioLayne's score card. XD Nice reaction.

Yeah, with this arrangement Geoff blew everybody's mind, it seems. On fist listen I wasn't sure if I like it, but by now it has grown on me. In parts really faithful to the original, but very different in other parts.
If I may suggest something completely different, here are three songs from Ayreon that are worth a look:
And The Druids Turn To Stone (ruclips.net/video/lR-foGKsus0/видео.html) Beautiful, chill song about the creation of Stonehenge
Valley Of The Queens (ruclips.net/video/TbebO5BZi-I/видео.html) A folky trio with three very talented femaie singers
Everybody Dies (ruclips.net/video/9AAXtUdM7xE/видео.html) Hard to describe. The most upbeat song about a dystopian apocalypse, perhaps? Jennifer had fun with it, for sure.. 😛

Layne is definitely able to beatbox and play violin at the same time (requires a lot of practice of course) but they decided to not show that in the video this time, as the visuals were not very pleasant with Layne's face at that angle against the violin while beatboxing. 😄 They did try, but it just didn't look very nice. Layne beatboxes and plays violin at the same time for Warriors as well, also during live shows. He just needs a lot of practice beforehand to pull it off live.
