- How well do you remember Mortal Kombat 3 on Gameboy? Well in this video I finally determine which is better, MK3 on Gameboy or MK3 on a Potato. Nuff said.

The Potato port is so much better than both the Game Boy and Game Gear versions combined.
Back in the day I didn't even know a Game Gear version exist. People kept telling me there was one and I didn't believe them. Then in 2006, the truth was revealed, there was one after all and just as worst.

In all these ports, Kung Lao was always forgotten. He was gone in the MKII ports as well.

If you cook and then cool the potato overnight, the resistant starch that builds up acts as a color saturation enhancer to make the visuals more vivid. Kano's eye is more of a deep crimson red, for instance. Sound suffers though.

Fun fact: Before Deadly Alliance, this was the first Mortal Kombat game in existence that doesn't feature Liu Kang as a playable character at all. Also as terrible as this game looks and plays, this game does do one cool thing that the consoles and arcade versions doesn't do and that is allow you to use vs. kombat kodes in arcade mode so if you know all the codes you could kinda had fun with the arcade mode here. In one match you could play sudden death if you want, in another you could give the CPU the advantage then in the next you could take the advantage and in another match you could give them 1/2 energy and in another you could play a match in psycho mode, then in the next match you could have a match with no throws, and in another you could play randper and fight the CPU with both character constantly changing into other characters, the fun goes on. The vs. kombat kodes add variety to the matches in arcade mode, something you can't do in the console versions unless you turn on cheat menus.
I didn't think it was possible for that version to surpass my low expectations, but it did. It was the fiery wreck I expected, with gasoline and the entire Pinelands of NJ thrown in the mix to fuel that raging inferno.

Similar to my experience with MK1, I also owned the game boy port of MK3 in the past. Nevertheless, I had access to the arcade version through visits to local arcade spots or by playing at a friend's apartment.
You can do so many things with a potato: Play Hot Potato, cook them, use them as a form of battery, use it as a weapon... the limit is your imagination!
MK3 tho... you can only play it for 5 minutes before going insane, throw it to the trash... and that's it. Terrible. The all mighty potato wins any day.

These GameBoy Ports probably would’ve been under-par acceptable if Nintendo or Game-Gear managed to produce them on the NES or Sega Master System consoles with Colour of course..

That's crazy that a potato has more value than this game, nowadays. Around 1997, I saw this game in a store(before Igot PS but still has Sega and GB and GG) and almost paying like $30-$35 dollars for it. Dodged a bullet there 😅

I think the best version of MK3 is on the DS. There's no "game over," it's more like the newer ones where you can keep trying till you win. Plus you have all the buttons of the original, so no pressing "select" to block or having to cut moves out due to not enough buttons.
The Game Boy versions of MK to me aren't really worth the effort, I only have MK2.
The GBA ones are a vast improvement, with Deadly Alliance and Tournament Edition essentially being a demake that holds up well. MK Advance is just MK2, but I'm pretty sure it's on steroids because I can't even beat the first opponent.
I haven't played Trilogy enough to tell if it does the same thing, but I've heard bad things about it in general.
That one is Ultimate MK3 and is a direct port of the arcade game. Like the arcade, Rain and Noob Saibot are not palyable, you need codes to unlock Mileena, Ermac, and Classic Sub-Zero, and they replace the 2-on-2 Team Battle and Tournament Mode with online play.

I hate that the sprites have no movements when they're not fighting, that's what really kills it for me. It just has no fluidity whatsoever and just stiff gameplay/graphics, at least the first two GB games got that part right even though MK1 feels like MK on the moon landing.
