As a black girl with brown skin, I'm happy to know there are people who will not look down on my skin tone. However, I would hope these girls have a healthy and natural relationship with the sun. No one should feel like being pale or tan is better. Both can be healthy as long as you care for it well.
I know this is from 2 years ago lol but we usually use fake tan or just makeup to darken skin we don’t usually tan in the sun since it’s harmful. I’m glad it makes you happy!!! Dark skin is beautiful, all skin tones are! Also they don’t feel that being tan is better it’s meant to go against japans beauty standard of pale skin. 💕
A lot of people in the comments say that the makeup is too strong..but that's the point! Gyaru was born to rebel against the beauty standard in Japan, they literally took every single point and reversed it: to be considered beautiful a girl has to have pale skin, so they tan; black straigh hair, so they bleach and curl their hair; simple/natural makeup, so they wear it strong; not show her skin much, so they wear revealing clothes; be modest, so they choose flashy colors and super long and colourful nails; ...
it doesn't really has to do with ppl finding them attractive or not, it's just the fashion those girls enjoy and what it means to them. Nobody is saying that is for outsiders to find them pretty
There are different levels of extrem if it comes to this style. I personaly liked the the look of the girl with the more medium make-up very very much. Embracing darker skin shades is already against the stereotypical beauty standards. Cathy asked for opinions so people should accept honest opinions.
so you liled the look thats more common to your taste, nothing new on that... thats the main point of different styles! the makeup is not too strong, maybe youre too weak lol
+KingsRight They might not care if it's attractive. I think they recognize most people wouldn't find them attractive. But they like making a statement with fashion.
Even though I'm not a major fan of the style, I do love their idea behind it. I love how they go against the typical asian beauty standard. In asia, having a pale skin is the beauty standard. Even in countries where the majority has a dark skin. I love how they actually prefer darker skin over a pale skin. As an asian girl who has a dark skin, it makes me feel special (for the very first time, I must say). 🤗
PLEASE keep that culture! I reached to Gyaru culture and started buying japanese magazines like "popteen" since I was heavily amazed by the style and hair! (ok, I preferred the onee-gyaru makeup, so not so much). I am sad that the 2000s are gone and that gyaru culture died around 2015 and that even most of the magazines disappeared
its honestly sad this store has closed down due to not having enough gyaru or ganguro employees. it really does seem like gyaru fashion as a whole is dying and has.
YAAAAAAAS GANGURO STILL EXISTS! I remember watching an anime called Super Gals! And I loved it so so much because it showcased this kind of style in it. Thanks for the video! Definitely gonna stop by that cafe and para para the night away!
Your ganguro look is on point! But she should have applied foundation also on jour jaw and neck area, because white legs is bearable, but the contrast between face and neck is too strong.
I've loved this style since I started learning about Japanese fashion about 14 years ago. Gyaru, lolita, and yankii were the first types of alternate subculture I learned about so it will always have a special place in my heart. I agree with the French women and believe we should be free to dress however we want. I see how the makeup can be seen as excessive, but a lot of women in the US also wear a ton of makeup. I feel like there is an element of drag in their makeup with their extremely contoured noses, enlarged eyes, huge lashes, and the overall contrasting shades in their face.
I AM SO HAPPY THAT GYARU GIRLS STILL EXIST! On my favorite manga (Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge) there are Gyaru girls and i always wonder if they are still alive. But your video gives me hope. I know they aren't very popular because of the strong contrast of make up but, i have always seen on different animes that their personalities are always original and kind and this video proof me that, so i feel a deep respect for the girls that like the style and are brave enough to wear it
So you liked the least Ganguro girl... me too. I felt she was a bit of a sellout though. Sure it’s dress how you like but then don’t call it Ganguro. Or else you can call Lolita Ganguro. They said darker is more beautiful then why is she not using ultra dark?
I like how different the style is from anything in Japan. I understand that they appreciate darker skin and have a unique idea of kawaii however without being well informed , and being black aswell , I can imagine people abroad may mistake it for discrimation. I persoanlly like the style though :)
@@waitahawhat In the US, ‘black face’ is disrespectful because of the history, so US people are usually quick to shame anyone who uses ‘black styles’ or tries to look ‘black’, but in places like Japan similar type of styles are done as nice styles and in admiration. I appreciate it. 💕
If you're interested in gyaru (there are LOTS of substyles, from punk-rock based to princess based and even school uniform based- with the style of makeup/hair style/level of tan customised to each type!) There is a gaijin gyaru magazine called Papillon that's available to read for FREE online in English! (Uts is passion project made with the blood, sweat, and makeup of dozens of gyaru collaborating world wide! Abd not to brag, but I'm in a few issues :P)
I love these girls, being a chocolate girl myself its to hear that others actually like & prefer a deeper tone. I'm usually harassed in States, its nice to kno its considered beautiful or healthy to have deeper skin in japan
ugh I absolutely love it, I can binge watch their makeup videos all day. I personally like how strong it is because to me it’s so pretty n adorable. The fashion and makeup are the best
I love ganguru/gyaru fashion it's so interesting. I don't think I'd be brave enough to wear it daily though. I struggle just with wanting to get into Lolita. But I would love to visit this place and get a makeover for a day. It would be so much fun!
as someone who is half black I had side eyed this at first then I watched a few videos and the movement seems absolutely beautiful. Be careful when you guys are in the sun tho
Ao-Chan is sooo pretty!!! OMGOSH!!!!!!!!!!! (not that they all aren't pretty- they are beautiful) But Ao-Chan omgosh looks like a friggin goddess!!! agh!!!!!!!
I love the gyaru aesthetics + it has a pretty clear message which you don't get with a lot of other styles. You can wear this and people won't fail to notice and receive the message you are trying to send.
I really have so much respect for the japanese girls who dress up like that i really wanna see it in real live 😂 but i think its hard since there arn't many girls anymore who dress up like that
GYARU GIRLS MADE THEMSELVES LOTS OF CONFIDENT, ARTISTIC LOOKS, FUNNY, BRAVE, WHAT THEY WANT TO WEAR, BUILDING FRIENDSHIPS THEY ARE ALSO CUTE, BRIGHT ALSO THEY HAVE LOTS OF TALENTS TO SHOW. THAT IS THE GYARU. AS AN ARTIST I LOVE AND I LIKE WHO THEY ARE AND WHAT THEY ARE. SELF CONFIDENCE IS VERY IMPORTANT. LETS LOVE, RESPECT, SUPPORT THE GYARU AND DONT HATE THEM. GO JAPAN
I had a friend who was really into ganguro style, but it was well over 10 years ago. I'm not a big fan of it myself, but I'm not against it - just not a fan of excessive makeup in general. BUT, the only thing that's important is that the one wearing it feels good in it.
Yes. Gyaru is an umbrella term, there are many styles of gyaru. Some styles have are known for tan, some are optional, some are strictly light skin. Examples: Ganjiro, oneegyaru, himekaji, kogyaru, agejo
They seem pretty cool girls. Not sure i liked the difference in skin colour from your face to body, but it seems that the other girls go full body, which makes more sense if your in it for the long term. Didn't really like the light lipstick & dark skin contrast, but perhaps i'm just not used to it. It was great to see Cathy in some shorts, showing off her legs for once
KingsRight you can see a bit of ladies flesh & not go full attack mode you know. I just tend to think "omg that's pretty!", appreciate the female form, then move on. Hopefully quickly cos the longer you do that for, the more of a creep will seem & you wont be able to talk to the better half of the population.

What a neat look! I think next time it'd work a little better with some blending into the neck and collarbone area, but otherwise it looks very flashy and intriguing!
I think Gyaru girls look hot, they look cute as fuck in anime too but the makeup on Cathy was just messed up, it's not the gyaru style that looks bad, I just think the makeup was bad cause I thought the gyaru girls looked cute.
I think they are pretty cool!!!! I mean not many people would wear the clothes or do what they really want because they are afraid of predujice. I really like the idea behind it
I remember seeing that one girl on Kawaii Pateen. Now I've seen them on a few actual TV Shows like NOGIBINGO and MONITORING. I'm glad to see the cafe looks successful.
Woooow I was surprised how good gal makeup looked on her, despite the slightly patchy-looking foundation and it only being on the face (Aichorisu did a great job but it's hard to apply non-matching foundation haha)! Would love to see a gal look in a more natural skintone for her.

we have a style similar to gyaru in israel :) it's a type of 'bimbo' or female version of 'gangster' they look and act very similar to gyarus. they usually have tan skin, more often than not it's natural though, the girls here usually have dark eyes and hair, so they bleach it blonde , they don't put on as heavy of make up but at the same time some girls do wear circle lenses or fake eyelashes so it's not totally unseen, make up in general is important to them....sometimes you'll see them wear very on flattering lipstick colors, like a beige almost white. although usually I think they go for reds. their personalities are similar too , they'll try and laugh as much as possible and will try and have fun and lure the 'gangster' boys to come have fun with them or just go out with them. they do have a unique clothing sense , but I am not into that fashion so I am not sure how it works myself. it's actually the most common and basic look here, most everyone is trying to achieve. ah, we also have real gyaru's in israel, unless they dress up flashy and colorful , even with their unique gyaru make up and thin body, they don't really stand out much. we have other harajuku fashions here too , ever since we go a few harajuku brand stores open up here. I think the makeup was a bit off, not because of the style, but it might be because she is not used to make up a western... However, I love the outfit, how excited you are and how you are so used to large skirts that you keep your hands far from the body even though the ganguro outfit is close to the body. This sure was refreshing~~~♪
aaahh Ganguro Cafe i watch it on Monitoring variety show.. the owner Erimokkori is エリカ right? it's so impresive in Monitoring show when she calling her dad with DAIGO
Kinda bums me out that this style is dying out. It’s so bold and fun & the girls were talking about the mistreatment they get because of it in a Buzzfeed video & that makes so sad. Trends change but still.
I'll be honest here. I reeally love the thinking behind this style. But their makeup look can be a little better. This differs from person to person and what they think about a certain look. You can defy all ideals and rules and still look better. So if i take the host Cathy Cat as an example, i really like how she overall looked. She seemed like a real Gyaru Gal. But i wish her eye makeup was a bit better. So yea.. that's what i had to say. i dont mean it in an offencive way tho. Please don't misunderstand.
I really love their energy!!! And their* perspective of beauty~ Especially since there’s so much white washing. Not just in Japan, so many asian countries. I love it, love yourself, variation is the spice of life*, and beauty varies just like people do! * U * Also I really wanna learn/join their dance~~~~

Gyaru also curl their hair because a lot of them have pinch braid hair extensions, and curling them makes them blend better with your natural hair

So much girl power and solidarity throughout the entire video, but expecially in that hug near the end. Beautiful!
“Please be friends with me.” Haha awww, that girl was so cute!!! I hope you guys became friends!!!

She's gorgeous, but I wouldn't have called that gyaru at all.
genjii931 She is gyaru alright. There's many style of gyaru, not just kurogyaru and ganguro

Woah I didn't know about those differences in gyaru style !
I absolutly love the "oneegyaru" one, it's stunning
She is a Shiro Gal (White).
I think it only looks strange because her face is really dark but the rest of her skin is normal.
They should've applied it better too, there are patches of her actual skin showing through.
I always thought they do their make up very sloppy and they dont use brushes. Theres a series on youtube of a gyaru that do her make up
I absolutely love it and definitely want to get into ganguro fashion I love that it’s their own way of expressing themselves
The Ganguro girls are so sweet!! I would love to visit their cafe once I’m in Japan!!

I personally like my CathyCat on the Kawaii pink side. it was funny seeing the people's surprised reactions to Cathy's usual look.
we have a style similar to gyaru in israel :) it's a type of 'bimbo' or female version of 'gangster' they look and act very similar to gyarus. they usually have tan skin, more often than not it's natural though, the girls here usually have dark eyes and hair, so they bleach it blonde , they don't put on as heavy of make up but at the same time some girls do wear circle lenses or fake eyelashes so it's not totally unseen, make up in general is important to them....sometimes you'll see them wear very on flattering lipstick colors, like a beige almost white. although usually I think they go for reds.
their personalities are similar too , they'll try and laugh as much as possible and will try and have fun and lure the 'gangster' boys to come have fun with them or just go out with them.
they do have a unique clothing sense , but I am not into that fashion so I am not sure how it works myself.
it's actually the most common and basic look here, most everyone is trying to achieve.
ah, we also have real gyaru's in israel, unless they dress up flashy and colorful , even with their unique gyaru make up and thin body, they don't really stand out much.
we have other harajuku fashions here too , ever since we go a few harajuku brand stores open up here.
I'm a harajuku style girl myself , but I don't tend to follow any one thing or trend.I prefer the simpler looks.
But this is a very tamed version. I like the crazy Gyaru looks from the early/mid-2000 better.
Seeing the bigbang japan dome tour concert playing in the background on the screen made me so happy for some reason lmao
Ever since i watched SuperGALS way back when, if been quite fascinated with gyaru :3
This was very fun to watch! :P
Is the cafe still around ? I hope so. Even though I am not into the style myself I like to see people doing what they love
No :(
peach girl...super gals...roflrofl. I have never seen your usual touristy blogger cover this so thank you!
I think a tan is better then heavy base makeup; also, I absolutely loved your outfit! I would so want to wear that.
I love your bubbly personality, you're amazing
aw that girl really wanted to be friends
I liked the tanned look, most Japanese girls look like ghosts . Cathy, you looked like someone else. Was a real cool vid.
I think the makeup was a bit off, not because of the style, but it might be because she is not used to make up a western... However, I love the outfit, how excited you are and how you are so used to large skirts that you keep your hands far from the body even though the ganguro outfit is close to the body. This sure was refreshing~~~♪
The girl in the black hoodie looks so cute
CathyPoyo! nice :) 新しいキャラ生まれましたね。
Gyarus part of Japanese culture and they so adorable 💜
can i be friends with the girls form Paris? they seem really nice and open minded
I didn’t even recognize you Cathy Cat! Btw, I loved the new video opening!
aaahh Ganguro Cafe i watch it on Monitoring variety show..
the owner Erimokkori is エリカ right?
it's so impresive in Monitoring show when she calling her dad with DAIGO
I see it as a form of being a Drag queen because you feel good and confident about yourself.
This is such a sweet video 😊✨
The girl at 6:09 is someone I relate to so much. Also, she is adorable! :)
Kinda bums me out that this style is dying out. It’s so bold and fun & the girls were talking about the mistreatment they get because of it in a Buzzfeed video & that makes so sad. Trends change but still.
I just got a dose of girl power this morning from this video 🍥🙌🏾👻💪🏾💅🏾👄💁🏾🙆🏾💋🐼💫
I would like to see Cathy with the Gyauru clothes but her normal make up
I don't like ganguru in particular, but you were completely transformed here :)
I wanna go to that cafe sooo bad 😍
The face makeup was a bit too strong, but the clothes looked great! Nice leggs! :D
Woww,. Looks so unique,. How can i know more about gyaru/ ganguro? Anyone can help me? Please
ths cafe just been added to my list of things to do if i ever afford to visit japan seems fun ._.
The dual buns wielder was super cute.
I love Cathy Poyo😭❤
You should try shironuri😁
I'll be honest here. I reeally love the thinking behind this style. But their makeup look can be a little better. This differs from person to person and what they think about a certain look. You can defy all ideals and rules and still look better. So if i take the host Cathy Cat as an example, i really like how she overall looked. She seemed like a real Gyaru Gal. But i wish her eye makeup was a bit better.
So yea.. that's what i had to say. i dont mean it in an offencive way tho. Please don't misunderstand.
I really love their energy!!!
And their* perspective of beauty~
Especially since there’s so much white washing. Not just in Japan, so many asian countries.
I love it, love yourself, variation is the spice of life*, and beauty varies just like people do!
* U *
Also I really wanna learn/join their dance~~~~
So Cathy actually has an amazing body.
Kat, you need to learn to do ganguro makeup, it really change your look a lot lol. It's good to surprise your parents ahahahha
Really Gyaru is not popular anymore ...Dang wanna meet some xD so colorful
This was interesting 💛will there be more videos like this on the different types fashion in Japan
