    I read that the dark skin and colored hair of ganguro originated with rebellious japanese girls that protested their society's emphasis that beautiful women should be white as snow and with long, straight black hair... so they went the opposite... dark skin, colored and fluffy, big hairstyles/wigs. Pretty cool!

      BS
      That theory is just an afterthought added by Westerners who think Asian or Japanese beauty standard is toxic. I understand Japanese, but in all my reading of the various Japanese-language literature, I have never found any claim to such a theory. The English version of Wikipedia just cites a shady website.

    Honestly, as a black girl, I think it's just very interesting. I hope they don't get sick from all of that tanning though.
    I say, let them do what they want, if they think something looks cool and they want to do it, go ahead, have fun, so long as it doesn't hurt anyone else.
    We've all gone through our own share of trends in our lifetime whether it was emo, indie, scene, goth, punk, skateboarder, junkie, hipster, hippie, rave girl, etc. what ever it was we've all gone through it at some point, but to call someone "ugly" as you watch them going through there moment (since you're so superior and you've obviously far surpassed your trendy stage) is not cool, nor does it make you cool. So lay off, and just take it for what it is, if you don't want to, leave.

      As far as I know, gyaru started as a way to rebel against the prevailing beauty standards, where fair skinned people were seen as pretty. It makes sense that they're labeled as ugly because it started out as a way to rebel against beauty standards.

      @@tehma120 no there is a major difference between a gyaru and blackface, gyarus in no way are trying to be black or emulate or caricature black people they are rebelling against the major east asian beauty standard that fair skin is pretty while darker or tanner skin is ugly. Everyone please stop saying that they're trying to look black / like African Americans. Gyaru style, ganguro specifically is modeled after yamanba from Noh/Kabuki. Yamanba is named after a witch from Japanese folklore. There are styles of gyaru that are literally blackface, such as b-gyaru, but Ganguro isn't trying to imitate black people.

Unfortunately, I don’t see Japanese fashion coming back in full swing. People simply don’t care or don’t believe they can do it, and the people that do care And appear to be in the community don’t dress this way irl. Gyaru is basically j-fashions shield from not going extinct.

As for all the people saying they dress to revealing, here in thr U.S. you see a good majority dresses similiary. Though if you have the body for it why not flaunt it! It's your body, nobody elses! A few comments have been removed that violate our longstanding policy against personal insults/attacks. In japan kuro also mean tan/dark, cause if you get a tan, you could also use the word kuro refer to tan/dark , DO NOT use English Grammer/definition to applying to Japanese language.

    Honestly as a black person I'm pretty flattered. I mean, a lot of times brown skin isn't considered pretty, but here are some girls completely embracing it, and it's cute! I'm mixed, so I'm a little lighter than some of these girl, but I think their colour is absolutely lovely and I adore this style!

    There are people who have done blackface in insensitivity and ignorance, but I don't think this qualifies as blackface. I believe this is a genuine part of Japanese culture and personally, as an African American, it appeals to me. I like Gyaru girls and think they are very beautiful and highly attractive.

    • @yueuphoria8952
      @yueuphoria8952 4 года назад +4

      Indeed, this isn't blackface. This subculture originated from a will to rebel against the original japanese beauty standards (pale skin, black hair...). :)

    To be honest, this was the easiest of all the awesome Japanese fashion trends to get used too: A lot of girls here (England) dress like that, but not nearly as well. If they're going to do it, they should go all out and make a statement like these girls! -3
