- Today I wanted to clear up some of the confusion you usually see surrounding Final Fantasy VII and how the love triangle played out between Tifa, Cloud, and Aerith. We'll take a look into her character and what drives her as in the hopes to educate and keep fingers crossed for them keeping these themes strong in the upcoming FFVII Remake. Her depictions in kingdom hears, dissidia, and other Anime cameos can make things a bit... confusing.

Tifa is my favorite female character ever. The amount of respect and admiration I have for her is insane.
A beautiful, smart, strong, caring, kind and motherly character like her deserves all the appreciation she gets.

Ah, someone who sees Tifa much like I do. I know this video is old but it was a refreshing watch.
People used to (and sometimes still do) give me crap for Tifa being my favorite of the bunch, they assume it's all physical.
But what they were also the same people who were always "Aeris this" and "Aeris that". Only time did I talk someone into replaying the game and to try and not focus on Aeris.
Later on after they'd finished the game, they came back after delving deep into her characters story and told me she's a much more driven character than they realized.
So many people were so focused on the physical, just attributing her to being the "eye candy" of the group that they failed to see just how important of a character she is to the group, hell to the story.

I don't really like Aerith's character, I know she's the main role and died for the planet. But she is the most monotonous or boring game's character who I have ever known. She's the type of princess in fairyland, beautiful and kind .. Very boring 😒 ..
For game characters, I prefer the one who is good at fighting because it's more useful, that's why I prefer Tifa. She is not only beautiful but also strong. 💪
@@ekawiyani1089 everyone has that one clingy friend who just never stops talking, doesn't give you space, gossips all the time, cuts you off mid sentence all the time, does things that make you facepalm, etc. That's Aerith. I mean, don't get me wrong, those friends are also very optimistic, bright, fun, it's just they get overwhelming and tiresome.

Cloud’s mental illness
Psychology has always been something that intrigued me. To me, I can relate to Cloud’s depressive episode. So here’s a list if anyone is interested about what Cloud is going through post-ff7.
Here’s an idea so people can understand the weight of what mental illness does to people and relationships.

Symptoms
Intrusive memories
Recurrent, unwanted distressing memories of the traumatic event
Reliving the traumatic event as if it were happening again (flashbacks)
Upsetting dreams about the traumatic event
Severe emotional distress or physical reactions to something that reminds you of the event
Negative changes in thinking and mood
Symptoms
Negative feelings about yourself or other people
Inability to experience positive emotions
Feeling emotionally numb
Lack of interest in activities you once enjoyed
Hopelessness about the future
Memory problems, including not remembering important aspects of the traumatic event
Difficulty maintaining close relationships

“Tifa, I’m not fit to help anyone…not my family, not my friends…no one.”-Cloud to Tifa in ACC.

All the adults were surprised and looked at Marlene.
“You’ve told us that story before and Cloud just gives the same answer!”
It didn’t go well. But we were together. It was because we were family. We lived in the same house and we were living by uniting our strength. Maybe there wasn’t much conversation or many smiles, but we were family, Tifa thought to herself. No, it was what she made herself think. -After Cloud’s strange behavior starts.
Changes in emotional reactions

Examples:
It was night, and they had closed the bar. Cloud was drinking alcohol even though he rarely did. He drained his glass. Tifa thought about it before going over and filling his glass.
“Shall I join you?” There was something she wanted to talk to him about.
“I want to drink alone.”
Intensity of symptoms
PTSD symptoms can vary in intensity over time. You may have more PTSD symptoms when you’re stressed in general, or when you run into reminders of what you went through. For example, you may hear a car backfire and relive combat experiences. Or you may see a report on the news about a sexual assault and feel overcome by memories of your own assault.

Tifa put the slip away with the others as if nothing happened, but she was trembling severely. Transporting mail around the world meant he was traveling around his past too. She knew that Cloud was in great pain because he couldn’t protect Aerith. Cloud was trying to overcome that and live on. But, going back to the place where he parted from Aerith might mean that his sorrow and regret was going to tear his heart again.
The above is also what is known as a grief trigger. A grief trigger is when you see, hear, smell, or come into contact with something that reminds you of the traumatic event. When this happens you can spiral into grief and depression.
You can be doing fine for months or even a year before you encounter this trigger.
For Cloud, his trigger was seeing Elmyra and going to Aerith’s grave.
Depression
Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. A bleak outlook-nothing will ever get better and there’s nothing you can do to improve your situation.
Loss of interest in daily activities. No interest in former hobbies, pastimes, social activities, or sex. You’ve lost your ability to feel joy and pleasure.
Self-loathing. Strong feelings of worthlessness or guilt. You harshly criticize yourself for perceived faults and mistakes.
Pretty self explanatory this is how Cloud acts in ACC. He thinks he can’t do anything, he’s just willing to give up and die and let Geostigma take him.
Cloud is also cherophobic.
Cherophobic: A person who is afraid of being happy. Mostly, cherophobic people doesn’t want to be happy because they feel like something bad or tragic will happen sooner after they become happy.
Examples
AC Prologue:“Nojima: Cloud never had a candid personality to begin with, and although he started living with Tifa and even started working, he obtained a peaceful living he’s never experienced before, and this conversely made him anxious. And in the midst of this he contracts Geostigma himself,and rather than being able to protect the people dear to him, he instead was forced to face his own death, and so ran away.”
….
Nomura: Even though he found peace, Cloud has lost a lot of people dear to him up until this point. Not only that, but looking at Cloud’s history, this is the first time he’s experienced a ‘peaceful’ environment in the true sense of the word. Cloud is a character who will always keep thinking, regardless of what’s going on around him.
….
“- So, why has Cloud separated himself from his friends?
Nomura: Cloud is scared that the peace he has now might shatter, so he is living on his own.
- Why?
Nomura: In the past he meet Zack, his best friend, and Aerith, someone who was important to him, but he lost them, so wonders if his present peace will also shatter one day... Since something might happen while he’s around, he left everyone behind and is doing delivery work on his own.

Cloud was suffering from MENTAL ILLNESS. He had PTSD, and what do you know? One of the symptoms is being unable to maintain close relationships.
This doesn’t mean two people are incompatible or dysfunctional if one of them has PTSD. It’s hard on EVERYONE.
Cloud’s relationship with Tifa wasn’t even the first one to change. It was Marlene who noticed Cloud had changed. Cloud’s relationship with everyone suffered. He shut off everyone, including Tifa.

Tifa is the only one he opened up too, and now he’s even closed her off. Do not undermine mental illness because it can’t be cured with romantic love. Being in love with someone does not put a special safeguard around you from ever being emotionally traumatised. A symptom of PTSD is being unable to maintain close relationships, and that’s exactly what happens.

Great video my friend! Cloud and Tifa aka the CloTi ship is the fulfillment of a promise. That Cloud would always be there if Tifa was ever in trouble. That her Hero would come to her rescue!
This couple is Canon as made evident by the later events of Final Fantasy VII. And made even clearer by the events of Advent Children. Before Advent Children Barret officially entrusted Tifa and Cloud to raise Marlene, who was the orphan girl he rescued and looked after until he found her a proper home. In Advent Children the Strife family (Cloud, Tifa, Denzel, and Marlene) were living together but when Cloud was infected with the Geostigma, he left thinking he was going to die. Desperately seeking a cure for all others infected, including himself. Cloud pushed everyone away to in his eyes, cause everyone less pain. Once cured of the Stigma however he goes back to living with Tifa, and raising their adopted children Denzel and Marlene together. Even later by the events of Dirge of Cerberus Cloud and Tifa are still living together. CloTi is canon!
Cloud always had feelings for Tifa and they were longtime childhood friends together. The local boys always followed Tifa around everywhere but Tifa always liked Cloud. When he was leaving he boldly stated to her he was going to join SOLDIER. He did this as a way to make her notice him more. Cloud was trying to impress Tifa, his childhood love. She then made him promise to be her Hero. To come to her rescue if she was ever in trouble.
And Cloud did fulfill his promise to her when he showed up during the Nibelheim incident. He also continued this promise by helping Tifa whenever he got the chance throughout the story of FF7. From joining Avalanche because Tifa was fighting Shinra, to rescuing her in Don Corneo's mansion while she was on a spy mission to learn what the Don knew about Shinra's plans, but luckily Cloud saved her from having to persuade the information out of him.
Years later when Cloud has his mental breakdown, it was Tifa who tirelessly cared for him. Her love for him is endless. Together Cloud and Tifa end up traveling through Cloud's memories to piece together Cloud's true past. It was Tifa who helped Cloud come to terms with his identity, see through the lies Sephiroth told him, and regain his hope for the future. And she helped him get his sanity back too! Without Tifa's help, Cloud would never have fixed his broken mind, and so lead the party to stop Sephiroth.
Eventually Sephiroth is summoning Meteor with the Black Materia. Cloud suggests their group disbands and has everyone decide for themselves what they wish to do. That night Cloud and Tifa spend time alone together under the Highwind. Cloud smiles and states he knows he can do anything, because he has Tifa by his side!
They share a close romantic conversation, and then spend the night under the stars together. It's very clear that they professed their love to each other, and slept together that night under the Highwind. From this point on they lived together as lovers.
Cloud and Tifa are a canon couple of the Final Fantasy 7 universe just like Zack and Aerith.
NOTE: To anyone who doubts whether CloTi is canon... The night under the Highwind happens regardless of who the player chooses to date. Advent Children and Dirge of Cerberus prove Cloud and Tifa are a couple. The FF 7 Ultimania states CloTi is canon. Cloti is NOT canon. I have proof.
1.) Nomura of Square Enix doesn’t know the nature of Cloud and Tifa’s relationship AFTER the Highwind scene:
“For example, I was frequently asked if there had been romantic relationship between Tifa and Cloud for two years, after Final Fantasy VII ended, but I don’t have any clue.” ~Nomura; Dorimaga interview; published at Flaregamer
2.) Denzel and Barret are members of the same family, it’s just that Denzel is not living with Barret, which is why Barret does not appear in any of the quotes regarding Cloud, Tifa, Marlene, and Denzel*living* together. Here is the proof:
“After visiting various locations with Tifa and Barret, Tifa opened the “Seventh Heaven” bar. Before setting off on a journey, Barret left Marlene in Cloud and Tifa’s care, and the three of them began living together.” ~Case of Tifa, Square Enix
It says the “three of them [Cloud, Tifa, Marlene]” began living together AFTER Barret set off on a journey.
This unequivocally proves that when the words “live”/”living”/”lived” are used to describe Cloud, Tifa, Marlene, and Denzel, it is ONLY excluding Barret because he is not TECHNICALLY living with them.
We also know Barret returns to living with Marlene in Dirge of Cerberus:
"Currently he is living with Marlene, the orphaned child of his best friend, however…"~Dirge of Cerberus Official Complete Guide; p.21; Square
Further - Denzel’s presence has no relevance towards Cloud and Tifa’s relationship. Cloud believes Aerith brought Denzel to him, so if anything, Denzel would be considered Cloud and Aerith’s spirit child. Cloud x Tifa supporters make it seem as though Cloud and Tifa adopted Denzel because of their romantic relationship, which couldn’t be further from the truth.
Both Marlene [Barret’s daughter] and Denzel [the child Cloud believes Aerith brought him] have no relevance towards the possible romantic nature of Cloud and Tifa’s relationship.
3.) We know Cloud and Tifa are going through serious problems that prevented them from being in a relationship. Final Fantasy VII creator Nojima speaks of a premise that things "won’t go well" between Cloud and Tifa:
"First off, there’s the premise that things won’t go well between Tifa and Cloud, and that even without Geostigma or Sephiroth this might be the same…” ~Nojima interview about On the Way to a Smile; Square Enix
Did you catch that last bit? Even without circumstances such as Geostigma and Sephiroth, things stillprobably wouldn’t have gone well between Cloud and Tifa. Without Sephiroth, Cloud wouldn’t have PTSD. Therefore, this speaks to the inherent issues that have persisted between Cloud and Tifa since childhood.
Nojima also says the children -Barret’s daughter, Marlene, and Cloud and Aerith’s spirit child, Denzel-*MIGHT* be able to help Cloud and Tifa sort through their problems:
"After Advent Children Complete, I guess Denzel and Marlene could help them work it out.” ~Nojima; On the Way to a Smile interview; Square Enix
Even after Cloud’s Geostigma and guilt is removed, and Sephiroth is defeated, Nojima still isn’t sure Cloud and Tifa will work out.
Nojima, the creator of Final Fantasy VII, has said two very important things:
Cloud and Tifa’s problems likely have nothing to do with Geostigma and Sephiroth, the cause of Cloud’s PTSD.
Even when the issues plaguing Cloud are resolved [his guilt, Geostigma, and Sephiroth] Nojimastill isn’t sure Cloud and Tifa will work out.
Both of these reasons tell us Cloud and Tifa have serious, inherent problems that prevent them from partaking in a healthy, long-lasting relationship.
Unfortunately, nothing between Cloud and Tifa has been shown to be resolved. Barret returns to living with Marlene in Dirge of Cerberus, and Cloud and Tifa’s relationship status is still unknown and in fractured territory.
Of course relationships aren’t always romantic - it’s normal and natural for couples to have problems. But, it is *equally* normal and representative of a real relationship to also have romance and a honeymoon phase.
Cloud and Tifa only qualify under the negative aspects of a relationship, whereas Cloud and Aerith qualify under the positive aspects of a relationship.
4.) Cloud, Tifa, and Barret create a family together after the Highwind scene in Case of Tifa [seriously, read the novel]. Marlene is Barret’s daughter and invites Cloud into their family, a family that already includes herself and Barret. The family formed was not created for romantic reasons or formed from a romantic place like most families are:
Marlene: “I’ll put Cloud in our family too.”
Cloud: “I appreciate that.” ~Revised Case of Tifa; Square Enix
The family formed was actually Barret’s idea [seriously, read the novel] and is a 'family of friends'. This family has zero romantic connotations. Unfortunately, Cloud x Tifa supports love to exclude Barret from this family to build up the false notion Cloud and Tifa started an exclusive family together out of love, which couldn’t be further from the truth.
As I said before, Barret returns to living with Marlene in Dirge of Cerberus and Denzel is a child Cloud believes Aerith brought him.
5.) Cloud has a separate bed in his private room during Advent Children. Not only do we see pictures of Cloud’s private room with a bed during Advent Children, but Tifa tells Cloud to go drink in his roomalone when they are having another one of their numerous fights:
Cloud: “I want to drink alone.”
Hearing that, Tifa lost control and said, “Then drink in your room.” ~Case of Tifa; Square Enix
People often say that because there is a lack of other furniture in Cloud’s room [like a dresser], it somehow invalidates the fact Cloud has a bed in his room. But how does a lack of other furniture mean Cloud can’t sleep in that bed? The point is, I find it hard to believe Square Enix would include a random bed in Cloud’s room just for the hell of it. If Cloud doesn’t sleep there, who does? Until we see Cloud and Tifa sleeping together, it only makes sense Cloud sleeps in the bed found in his room. This is further evidence that a romantic relationship did not begin between Cloud and Tifa after the Highwind scene.
Marlene is also stated to ALWAYS sleep with Tifa in Case of Tifa.
6.) Tifa admits to not knowing if Cloud loves her AFTER the Highwind scene:
"Do you love me?”
Cloud opened his eyes. He looked perplexed.
"Hey, Cloud. Do you love Marlene?”
"Yeah. But… sometimes I don’t know how to act around her." ~Case of Tifa; Square Enix
If Tifa doesn’t know if Cloud loves her, Cloud x Tifa supporters shouldn’t pretend they know, either.
7.) Cloud and Tifa expressing mutual feelings in a variable scene =/= romantic relationship.
Although this is a reasonable assumption, it is NOT always the case that expressing mutual feelings means a romantic relationship begins. Reading Case of Tifa and watching Advent Children makes it clear Cloud and Tifa were never in a romantic relationship. I mean, do people actually call that a relationship? I understand all couples fight, but all couples have at least a few moments of romance, too. Where was their honeymoon phase?
8.) There are no Cloud x Tifa OFFICIAL pieces of Square Enix artwork together.
9.) According to Square Enix’s relationship charts found in Square Enix’s FFVII 10th Anniversary Ultimania, Cloud and Tifa are childhood friends only in both the Final Fantasy VII relationship chart and the Advent Children relationship chart. In addition, Cloud and Tifa never have mutual favor arrows, either. The FFVII 10th Anniversary Ultimania provides two relationship charts: One for FFVII and one for AC. By including two charts it is meant to compare and contrast relationships in FFVII to relationships in AC. Essentially, having two charts helps highlight the changes the relationships have gone through between FFVII and AC. However, Cloud and Tifa’s relationship does not go through any changes because they are referred to as “childhood friends” in both charts. However, that is not the case for Cloud and Aerith. The FFVII chart states Cloud is Aerith’s “bodyguard.” Then, for the AC chart, it states Cloud feels a, “sense of guilt” towards Aerith. That’s because Cloud failed to protect Aerith - meaning he failed as her bodyguard. The difference between Cloud and Aerith’s two charts was the perfect way for SE to show us how their relationship changed between FFVII and AC - Cloud failed as her “bodyguard” in FFVII, so he feels a sense of “guilt” towards her in AC. Why did SE not show any changes between Cloud and Tifa’s relationship? Answer: because Cloud and Tifa’s relationship did not change between FFVII and AC, and are only childhood friends during both time periods.
10.) Cloud and Tifa living together in Advent Children does not mean a romantic relationship exists. Remember Cid and Shera in Final Fantasy VII? Also, remember that Cloud has a separate bed in his private room and that the family formed was formed with Marlene and Barret. This is a “family of friends” and has zero romantic connotations.
11a.) Highwind Scene Variability Quote #1:“After stopping Hojo from going amuck, the conversation with Tifa before they rush into the Northern Crater diverges into two conditions, according to Tifa’s affection rating with Cloud. When it gets low, the conversation in the scene that they spend the night will be apathetic and ends short. Next morning in the cockpit, Tifa says “Were you listening?” and stamps on tiptoe. On the other hand, when degree gets higher, the conversation of the scene that they spend the night will have strong emotions. Next morning in the cockpit, Tifa will say “Were you watching?” and feels terribly shy” ~page 198; Final Fantasy VII Ultimania Omega
11b.) Highwind Scene Variability Quote #2:
“Deviation - Two versions of the conversation before the final battle. Prior to the final battle, the contents of the conversation between Cloud and Tifa can change depending on the degree of Tifa’s affection. If the degree of affection is high, the contents of the two’s conversation will involve deep subject matter and strong feelings for each other. As well, the sight of the two seen by their companions the next morning will lead to an embarrassing scene for Tifa, and she blushes greatly.”~page 232; Final Fantasy 20th Anniversary Ultimania
11c.) Highwind Scene Variability Quote #3:
“Another event is when the party was dismissed and after everyone left for their own places separately, Cloud and Tifa spent the night together. At that moment,according to Tifa’s affection rating with Cloud, the event of “dialogues exchanged between them from dusk to dawn” and “Tifa’s reaction and lines when she found out that everyone might see (or hear) that circumstance” will be different.” ~Final Fantasy VII Dismantled; page 201
12.) "And having two heroines, Aerith and Tifa, and having the hero waver between them, at the time that was something new.” ~Interview with the creators; pg. 8-13; 10th Anniversary Ultimania; Square Enix
13) Cloud is a popular character. Nomura said himself said that the player can choose who Cloud get to be with (Tifa or Aerith). The following quote is said by Nomura himself: ”I’d say, [who Cloud likes] is all how you perceive the game. Cloud, as you know, is a very popular character, so I don’t want to confirm the answer either way. Since the players have affection towards him, I want to leave it up to the players to decide who Cloud likes.” -2002 interview with Tetsuya Nomura
14.) Nomura explains why Advent Children doesn’t change anything:
"Advent Children is a piece of work made by Japanese people. In Hollywood movies, I think there is a tendency where the meaning of all the scenes have to be expressed clearly but, this isn’t something like that. With our work, the viewer is free to decide how they interpret or enjoy it. The staff has their own answers to all the scenes in the movie such as the angel statue that makes an appearance many times. But, even if someone who has watched it interprets it differently, then that is just another answer. I guess “comparing answers” with friends is one of the ways you can enjoy the movie. I think AC is a movie that makes those who have watched it, want to talk about it with others.” -Tetsuya Nomura; FFVII AC Prologue Book
This is coming from a Clerith fan. Both Cloti and Clerith are not canon. I don’t know why people would say so otherwise.

Agree cloti is canon!
Cloti isn't canon, but it definitely has stronger implications than Clerith. Until/unless it is confirmed directly (through official text, gameplay, and/or from the mouths of the content creators), all we have are hints that they're together (but we also have hints that they're not).

I don't think pairing Cloud with Aerith is invalid; simple put both are a "true love interest". This was an era before having multiple love interest was the norm and enough care and development was given to that relationship to make it clear the developers wanted the it to feel like a true triangle rather than one matchup being correct. I will agree they wanted Cloud to end up with Tifa (considering they literally kill the competition) but that doesn't negate what came before it only the potential of what followed. It's easy to say Aerith just liked Cloud for him similarity to Zack but his personality and demeanor are different enough that I'd say she cared for him for himself and that was only what started her interest. Tifa is definitely an under appreciated character but I think tying that into her relationship with Cloud does her a disservice and trying to argue for a "one true pairing" undercuts the game itself.
It's invalid canonically but but for the sake of gameplay and player choice they wanted to make sure that you felt as if you could sway the relationship one way or the other during the game. The affection system also added to the choice aspect. The Ultimania clears up Cloud/Tifa being the right pairing by confirming them admitting their feelings for each other without words later on. If they new scenario writers are sticking to the script the remake might push for Tifa's love interest angle to be stronger this time around. But yeah, you;re definitely correct about the devs wanting choice and ambiguity.
Currently now in the remake they're both the heroines, in an old interview in famitsu they wanted this to have a complicated love relationship. Many cannot deny Cloud loved both women, but many also cannot deny who's the one been there always for Cloud and like said the devs literally killed the competition and gave it closure to FF7 Advent Children as we see Aeris or Aerith with Zack.

guys, remember that the og has a ton of mistranslated texts...even some of the remake's dialogues are twisted. And a lot of Cloti scenes were cut of for time or restriction reasons.

It's fitting for her character (and another example of just how well-designed she is; even her name reflects her personality). She keeps her emotions to herself, but for the right reasons: to protect the well-being of others. Her biggest secret throughout the entire game was that she knew Cloud's story was BS, but she never called him out on it until she got into his subconscious.
Another girl just came and left but Tifa was still there .. Only Tifa in Cloud's heart from beginning to end ..

Aerith cemented herself into Cloud's heart so much that even 2 years after they defeated Sephiroth, there is nothing in his mind but his failure to save her. THAT is how much she means to him.
Not to mention that what Cloud and Aerith had (if you chose to follow that route in the OG story) was ABSOLUTELY GENIUNE. In the Golden Saucer Date, she says that it is true that her initial interest in him was because of his semblance to Zack. But she admitted to slowly falling in love with Cloud, and that she wanted to meet THE REAL CLOUD.
Fast-forward to after the OG Storyline, Aerith calls Cloud as HER BELOVED in Lifestream White and admits that she had come to LOVE CLOUD MORE THAN SHE EVER LOVED ZACK. This is canon, since major points from the Novellas allude directly unto the Remake.
So the TRUE LOVE INTEREST in both the OG and the Remake is. . . . .
WHOEVER YOU CHOOSE.
@@justpazzingby13 Tbh I never had the feeling in the OG it was romance driven at all. Sure you get one date scene, but that's hardly enough to talk about love. I found it interesting that Cloud only showed feelings AFTER Aerith died. So I think if Tifa died, we would get the same response from Cloud. He just blames himself. Maybe he would even blame himself more because of the promise he gave to Tifa. And Cloud is not the only one suffering. In case Tifa, her feelings of guilt and sadness are addressed as well, altough I think the story's overall did not do a great job.

Also Aerith thought all these years that Zack just didn't care about her and she must have felt very hurt. She kept sending him letters for 5 years (!) after their last encounter. So I would say her feelings for him are pretty clear.
But I would agree. It really depends on the choices in the game and really how you as a player interpret Clouds feelings. While of course the story is told in a certain way, there is always room for interpretation.

This is an old video but it still stands that Cloud and Tifa could barely be called friends let alone “childhood” friends when they didn’t actually hang out.
Even as adults and time apart in the OG, Cloud was going to leave after getting paid. Tifa had to remind Cloud of the promise he was begged to make. Tifa is a great character in terms of being kept grounded to reality but she and Cloud are similar in the sense of lack of communicating feelings. They just don’t know how to talk to one another (A/CC).
We all know that she has feeling for him but not any part of this mentions Clouds POV.

Ah, this old argument again. The truth is, even though Cloud was obsessed with Sephiroth, he clearly *loves* Zack more. Sephiroth is a very unhealthy and toxic relationship, and deep down Cloud knows it. Here is all the evidence that supports Zack and Cloud's love:
FF7:
- Zack thinks Cloud looks good in SOLDIER uniform
- In Nibelheim flashback, Cloud talks to his mom, who ends up badgering him about getting an older girlfriend who will take care of him. He has no interest, because that is what Zack does.
- Despite papers stating that Cloud will never recover, Zack still drags his catatonic, mako poisoned ass across two continents
- Zack plans out their lives and future together as mercenary duo, automatically including Cloud in all future plans
- Zack literally dies protecting Cloud
- Cloud is so messed up from losing Zack, he has to repress all memory of him. It's just that painful.
- In a perfect world, Zack and Cloud would have gone on a snowboarding date at Icicle Inn, instead of whatever happened at the Gold Saucer.
Crisis Core:
- Zack takes abnormal intrest in ordinary infantry guy.
- Zack always complimenting Cloud on fighting abilities, and touching him on the shoulder, and smiling at him
- Zack attempts to ask Cloud on dinner date, but other infantry guys invite themselves along, Zack agrees to this IF they will watch out for Cloud and keep bad stuff from happening (actual DMW sequence)
- Zack is actually not that into Aerith. When he says Aerith is his girlfriend, what he means is "Heeeey girl friend!" Not "Hey, girlfriend." Big difference.
-During their "date" sequence which was more of a shopping trip, Zack literally makes her perfume (she stinks from living in the slums) and teaches her how to accessorize (buying her the ribbon) and tells her pink looks good on her.
- After Zack dies, Aerith loses all fashion sense. Really, a red jacket with the pink dress?! Really Aerith? Zack is rolling over in the Lifestream.
- Zack built that adorable flower cart for Aerith and helped with flower arranging. Probably so she could afford better clothes and stop shopping at the WalMarket.
- In Nibelheim, Cloud tries to invite Zack to his house for dinner, to meet his mom, so she will leave him alone about getting a girlfriend.
- Zack not only dragged Cloud across two entire continents, protecting and talking to him the whole time, but we learn that was for an entire YEAR! Think about your best friend. Now think about dragging that friend's catatonic, mako poisoned ass five feet, let alone for an entire year. That's not friendship, that's true love.

Aerith see's this and then questions and tricking Tifa into revealing her true feelings towards Cloud, in front of him crushing his "White Knight fantasy" Tifa is no princess and cloud is no white knight,
Tifa is just a badly dressed manipulative whore, Cloud is a cross dressing love drunk fool.
From this point on Cloud no longer try's to save Tifa or live up to her version of the promise, and Cloud realizes Aerith is the one he truly must Protect as he fights hard to get to the don's room before Aerith is defiled and he fail's his promise of being her bodyguard.
When the date scene happens Cloud is not in control of where and what they do, And is given a prophcey of them being a ...
perfect love match ( comes true ) and of Aerith's untimely demise ( comes true )

After Aerith dies Cloud is deeply wounded he failed his soulmate and he had to live his entire life with this on his shoulder's, Aerith from beyond the grave tried to recosile Cloud but couldn't,
Tifa also tried but couldn't because Cloud knew the truth of Tifa's true affections.
When Cloud became a wheelchair bound vegetable, Tifa finally felt remorse for what she put Cloud though and tried to look after him, but by the second visit she is already showing her inability to stick with the mothering role ( just like how she left marlene, she was going to leave Cloud ( again like after the fall.))
Once Cloud fell into the life stream Aerith connected Cloud and Tifa's mind's in her last attempt to save Cloud from the Corruption of Jenova cells that were taking over his mind,
Aerith used Tifa to do it.
