Doing a blind a/ b test really early into my entry into this hobby was really eye-opening. I don't know why audio enthusiast would be upset to learn cables don't matter. It's good news. It means you can spend your money on other stuff or save it for a rainy day.

Those self-proclaimed audiophiles aren't really music enthusiasts. They are obsessed with gear to a level that it could be considered a medical precondition. Therefore they need also step into bizarre areas such as "audiophile Ethernet cables" and all sort of other nonsense. 🤷‍♂️

I wouldn't begrudge companies and people for buying expensive cables because they think they look cool and they're a conversation piece. I just get frustrated because that's usually not the justification or marketing. It's almost always magic audiophile beans or pseudoscience.

  • @dixielandfarm

A lot of these people have gotten all bent out of shape because technology has increased so much in the past 20 years. Expensive cameras? Our phones have better than lots of the ones from 10 years ago that you'd spend a fortune. Vehicles have gotten better, computers have gotten better, and yes, audio equipment has gotten better. Anyone who says a Sansui 70s amp sounds better than a typical $300 well-made amp is in love with its sound characteristics, not reality. And reality is those components are 50 years old and are dying - just like most audiophiles.

    Howdy.
I get the impression the table has turned. Audiophiles are under attack now.
It used to be the other way earlier. Earlier regular listeners were under attack by audiophiles.
So yes. These days the snake oil legion sings in chorus "snake oil here, snake oil there, snake oil everywhere".
I should think maggot oil has seeped into the snake oil legion.

I love this man, figuratively speaking, totally relate to you brother.
I have come to the conclusion that,if people are really hearing a difference, then it has to be the manufacturer adding a capacitor to the cable, where then it has some equalizer effect. As I build all my audio equipment Turntable, single ended tube amps, tube pre amps, speakers and cables, the only equipment not built by me are my DAC and CD player,I can change the sound of my tube amps and tube pre amps simply by changing the coupling caps, and to some degree plate resistors, but not by much as you'll wear them out too quickly.

Yeah, although I hesitate to lump those two things together. I personally wouldn't buy a $2,000 headphone but at least you can truthfully make the claim that a $2,000 pair of headphones will sound different from other headphones.
But this cable stuff, and the MQA stuff.... Absolutely predicated on either duplicity or a lack of transparency. But that's not to excuse companies who make outrageous claims on their overpriced headphones and amplifiers as well.
And content creators who let them get away with it.

I made a video about this subject recently, I love hearing people try to defend expensive cables. They make no difference, but people are convinced they do.
I challenge them all to a double blind test.
But beyond speaker cables, and even MORE absurd, are the ones who pretend a 71,000.00$ gold braided POWER cable will give 'more definition'
    71k? Really?
Are these people just dumb? I mean, I know a little about sound, and it seems the first thing an 'audiophile' would learn about, how electricity works, etc.

As for rich folks, buy whatever you want. Truth is, there will ALWAYS be a market for the best (allegedly) of anything. There were rich folks walkin' round when Jesus was livin' but the audio was crap, there's rich folks now and there'll be rich folk in the year 5050. Some things matter. Capacitance, impedance, conductivity, shielding and insulation. In the cases where moderately expensive cable makes a difference is in a recording studio where, in some cases gold plating for conductivity is needed to retain signal quality where signal paths can get really lengthy in the processing chain. But that is moderate costs. Not over the top.

Yeah, 18 ga (zip cord) was usually recommended back in the 1970's. By 1979 I was using 16 ga and have ever since. I think the two colored speaker wire sold was actually 20 ga. Them, there AR9's were boss. Had a friend with AR-90's run off a Pioneer SX-950 and sound was fantastic, though his neighbors didn't necessarily agree. Betcha a lotta folks couldn't tell between sound quality of 14ga or 20ga wire. "You pays your money and takes your choice", Bogie quote from The African Queen.
