    I'm thinking about buying this knife. I already have the benchmade SOCP 178SBK for my non dominant side just in case someone tries to get to my firearm. I don't know if it sounds ridiculous to have the MDV plus on my dominant side where my gun is but I always believe more options with the right training is better.

    • @sliceymike
      @sliceymike Месяц назад +1

      Doesn’t sound ridiculous. My thoughts on carrying a blade strong side while having a CC pistol would revolve around your clothing at the time. I like carrying an MDV fixed blade in my strong side pocket if I’m CC my pistol. But that usually depends on if the pockets work well for that. Sometimes the angle of the pocket makes it less than ideal. In those situations, I carry the MDV folder.
      Having a knife on your strong side is a good idea to consider because it offers you another strong side solution. Just because you have a pistol on you doesn’t mean that’s the best solution for the problem at hand. If your knife is on your weak side, you can use that for close range situations that are better suited for a blade or unarmed. But that means you are using your inferior side as a primary tool. Some people may lack the training and or confidence to do that.
      Long response to say it’s not a silly idea. As with anything I would advise you carry what you are proficient using and what you feel makes you safer. You’ll assess and adapt that system as time goes on. If it isn’t a good fit for you, you’ll adjust it accordingly. I hope this offers some value in response to your comments.

    I just got mine. LOVE IT. Every single detail very well thought. Now I need to put the aluminum version into my practice, to get more familiarized with the system.
    One question, for future maintenance, do you know what angle the MDV+1 is sharpened to? since it's flat on one side, I guess it's 2x the angle used on a regular blade? I completely suck at free hand sharpening so I use one of those tools where you can set the angle and go from there

      Ssgt, we discuss this in several of our videos both on the Skallywag page and The Elite You page but it was found many years ago that a chisel grind will cut deeper into bone.. so that is the reason.. The reason for the chisel grind is so the blade can do as much damage as possible when needed.

    So I got mine last week. I’m disappointed in the sheath. The retention is done with 2 rubber band. You can give them a fancy name but they are black rubber bands. If you make the sheath just a tiny bit longer, maybe an 1/8” and bend it to retain the knife I would be happy and more importantly confident that the knife will not fall/drop out of its protective sheath. The knife itself is very malleable done. Sharp out of the box and very ergonomic. It does need a bit of grip tape or something else but good tool. I’m still not crazy about it being flat on one side. I’ve asked some knife guys I know and none see a real world reason for that. Also, D2 steel for the price, not worth it. I got the Damascus version for the price of the D2 so it is sort of worth it. Mainly it’s the best looking knife of this kind and decent steel. Oh, the Damascus version only comes with the sheath, two rubber bands and the knife its self. The box is nice but who takes the box with them and put it in their pocket and shot it off.
    Save on the box and get a usable sheath please.

    • @Skallywagtactical
      @Skallywagtactical  14 дней назад

      Hello, honestly we have explained this so many times it hurts but we will keep on doing so. you have a friction sheath there.. it was only designed to be carried in the pocket and they are ranger bands different from rubber bands. I guess you bought this knife cause someone told you it was one of the best EDC knives ever developed. Do you expect something to be very good but not different then something you have seen before? Lets break this down.. The sheath is designed as a friction sheath.. so we can control how much pressure it takes to rip the sheath off the knife when you hook it on someone.. assume you have watched some video before you bought this knife then you understand the knife can be deployed with the sheath on as a less then lethal tool. It sounds like you want to take something different and make it like everything else you have and that is fine but then you need a retention sheath so you can carry it on your belt but then you take half the design element out of the knife by fixing it to your self. This by the way is all explained in the description of the knife on the website. it also goes on to say that if you want a retention sheath they are available on the sheath section of the website. This knife was designed for and by Michel Donvito, a life long subject matter expert on teaching special operations how to do damage to the human body with open hands and tools. this knife was designed for him and all his experience. Rather then bash us on RUclips maybe consider asking some questions so you might put yourself in a place where we want to teach rather than replying to your slander and untrue comments.. Also the Chisel grind just so your experts know is a superior design when encountering bone we can tell you how we know that but not in the written word.. I suggest you trust us on that one. Anyway.. go on the website and get yourself a retention sheath.. put the Rhino sheath away until you are ready to learn rather then preach. Thanks for the business but please expect things to be different when they are expressed as one of the best.. Also.. when you need customer service and have issues, its always best to call or email the company and get resolution rather then just bashing the company on a social program.. but thanks anyway for the opportunity to address your statements cause i dont think they were questions for the many who might read this. if you do have real questions rather then statements then let us know we are happy to help you learn from our combined many years of close combat training.

      I did begin making my own knives simply because I couldn't afford the $300 - 500-ish price tag that many defensive knives go for. The best I can do: use cad software to design the knife blank (do you have that?) Waterjet cut blanks in something like D2 steel; about $30 after shipping. Then you need to grind the bevels/final shape with a belt sander - if you have one. That step has a learning curve - you might be awesome or you might suck at it. How many hours does that take? Hard to say. Once you're satisfied, you have to get it heat treated. I send mine out to a professional heat treater. With shipping both ways, that costs me about $55 dollars round trip. At that point, you have to either grit blast (have a grit blast cabinet available?) or sand/polish it (lots of time). If you want a rust resistant black coating, you would probably have to send it out (more money). I use ferric chloride on mine, which isn't the best of coatings but is cheap and I can do it easily. Then you have to apply the final edge. Don't rush here, you can easily overheat the tip and ruin your heat treat. Then you need a sheath that doesn't suck. That takes practice, but you'll need kydex sheets, kydex forming foam or a vacuum mold, a way to heat the kydex, an eyelet press, and a suitable clip. We haven't made it to a box or packaging, but I can say that Skallywag is definitely not gouging you; and that I cannot beat their pricing with my own efforts. If you wait for even 2 minutes, you can grab one of the many sales Skallywag runs and get it for $125 or less. Added bonus: trainers are stupendously cheap. I think Dynamis sell their trainiers for $75; right now you can get the mdv trainer for $35. Replacement sheaths are also stupid cheap. The real question is, how does Skallywag keep prices this low?
