Michael Donvito talks about how and why you wrap the Skallywag Tactical MDV with Monkey tape.
Get Monkey Tape here: www.skallywagt...
**Special thanks to Michael and Joshua for taking the time to do this for the crew in the middle of a very busy week.
I bought this product at the Blade Show in Atlanta a few weeks ago. Great product! Mike and crew were all great people to talk to. Thanks for all you do, specially in the Law Enforcement/Military community,
Great seeing you at the show, thanks for coming by the booth and saying hi! We appreicate you
Mike, thank you for making this video. Since the blade is black and there isn't a way to see color markers on the blade, I used a white out correction pen to make the marks on the knife for me to be able to tape around. Just thought some of your students might benefit from that as a tip.
I just wrapped my trainer, to rehearse carry and best comfort , then onto the live blade. thank you mdv
Damian, well thought out.. We appreicate you and your understanding of the blade !
Looking forward to these knives being back in stock!
Soon
If you have not gotten word, the blade is back in stock
I ordered mine last night.
@@MrMetonicus Thank you for your purchase.
I just came across this design, I am exited about it, Mike and Crew are very Law Enforcement/Military friendly, I appreciate that. Thank you for a great product.
Very facinating
Thanks for the tip. Love this knife!
This isnt Don The Dragon Wilson by any chance is it ?
Well, my nickname is the Dragon. But sadly no. Not the world champion kick boxer Don the Dragon Wilson. But, I'm sure if he saw this knife he would want one.
Just got mine today will be wrapping it right now with your monkey tape. From what I’m seeing so far seems to be great little knife and when I put it in the belt loop the way you recommend I can’t even tell it’s there.
Appreicate ya !
Like the knife only thing I’m having a problem with is when I go to lift my shirt to grab the knife from my belt buckle the hook on the knife always wants to catch my shirt. Any suggestions?
That depends on how you’re pulling your shirt up. You should try a two hand draw. Opposite hand grabs your shirt in front of your knife. Pull it up by pulling away from your body and up. That exposes your knife and then you grab it with your free hand.
Do this a few hundred times. Then when you have the motion. Try a one handed draw where you grab with your dominant hand. Slide you hand under your shirt and then draw the blade.
It’s confusing to me how it gets caught. The hook should not be exposed to much as to get caught. And it also depends on how baggy your shirt is. There are so many factors to this that I would not be able to advise this properly without video. You can look at sending a video of your setup and issues to Skallywag or to eliteyou.com. If you’re serious about it we can help you.
I look forward to seeing how you are having issues.
Ok I’ll try those couple techniques and see what I come up with. The blade doesn’t sit flat across my body we’re the hook is kind of points out so when I go to lift my shirt the last little part of the hook wants to catch it.
Have you watched the videos on the Elite You channel where I show how to carry it in pocket or with a lanyard? One of those options may be better for your body type or clothing.
I'M A LONG TIME KARAMBIT CARRIER AND PRACTITIONER AND ALWAYS WRAP MY BLADES WITH PARCORD...
Paracord is awesome but for the MDV we need something that creates areas of retention and not add thickness to the blade. Paracord also makes cool key chains and dog leashes
Thanks 👍
Great content! Thanx
Very nice. Can we get a overview and demo video with the deep 6 karambit? I'm interested in that one too, but only found one video with low audio quality.
I just got mine today in the mail, so I haven't wrapped it yet. Gotta see how I'll go about it and what I like. I might use some gorilla tape, seems to be what I have on hand at the moment
We have the Monkey tape on the website or you can get it from them but yes any tape you like will work fine ! Thanks and we are pleased you received yours. Thanks for the business.
I use my hockey blade tape, I wrap the whole handle with 1 layer then add a few layers exactly as shown. I have to place my 1" tape on a table and trim it to 1/2 " wide. I LOVE IT
Can you do a video on sharpening?
Coming soon
What is the proper way to sharpen this knife?
Thanks Andrew, good question. sharpen the front side like you normally would until a burr forms and then just take that burr off the back side.. will be razor sharp. A chisel grind is a very easy grind to sharpen cause it makes its own sharp edge from one side..
Hey, can you show how you carry this knife in the pocket? I assume it is just loose in the pocket and you drag the sheath against the corner to remove it?
If you pocket carry you can have it all the way in the pocket or have the hook caught on the back of the pocket.. when its in your pocket you have the option of catching the hook on the way out of the pocket or removing the blade with the sheath on still. the knife has several great uses as less then lethal with the sheath on.. that is the main purpose of the hook, so you can start less then lethal and if the situation warrants you can catch the hook on the other person or yourself.. if you have not, watch the other MDV videos on our page and watch closely you will see the sheath hook being used in that fashion.. thanks for the interest
Was totally loving this knife kit & excited until I saw the price point. Still think it’s rad but for 225$ & D2 steel? I kinda rather save a lil bit more for a microtech sbd dagger
Well understood, Tony and Company make a great blade..
Hockey Tape....FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST HOCKEY TAPE
Much love from Canada.
About to order MDV but looking for your best choice on Chef knife for my brother
He's a chef. I owe him. He's my brother and Iwant something impressive.
Any suggestions?
Skallywag Chef Knife, available on the individual Kitchen knife page on the website.. Also have a New full set coming out soon..
Cheers
Do you offer in person training seminars ?
yes, here is the link to our training page. right now there are only 2 live courses planned but we will be adding more later we normally do about 5-6 a year.. www.skallywagtactical.com/collections/training-courses
Dumb question of the day if anyone looks at these, have been looking at this knife for a little bit now and was wanting to get one, how often do they comeback into stock?
Roy, go to the MDV webpage www.skallywagtactical.com and put your name in the notify me when back in stock section. We just moved through 1000 of them, more wrapping up soon again and more in production.. thanks
That is not a dumb question..
Can you get the knife in red or does the trainer only come in red?
Tim, the trainer only comes in red. the live blade is black
Mike could you wrap the handle with sting ray skin ? or would that make it hard to pull out of pocket
Not sure if you have any laying around. I would try it and see. It might work well depending on how much you wrapped it. If you tape it the way I do with just the knots, it won’t be much surface area to catch. The knife doesn’t sit deep in your pocket usually. And if it’s behind your belt or another configuration I’ve shown it might not be an issue at all. Honestly, using sting ray skin never crossed my mind. I like the idea. -MDv
Couldn't find a darker room?
I tried. The videographer complained you couldnt see me. I didn't see the issue.
@@sliceymike - I love this knife. I'll be writing a review soon
Are you every going to make the Skallywag MDV in better steel than D2. It would be absolutely incredible if you made this Skallywag MDV in the virtually rust proof LC200N steel!!!
We could but you would double the price, would you pay 500.00 for one from LC200N?
@@Skallywagtactical D2 can rust easier than other blade steels, especially if carried in your wristband on a hot summer day. LC200N is virtually rust proof
@@ThomasConnolly Not if you maintain your knife.. keep it clean and oiled just like you would a gun.. also it wont rust though the coating unless you scratch it off and then D2 still wont rust if you take care of it.. D2 is not 1095 high carbon, it has some carbon in it but not like others.. plus i pose the same question would you pay 500.00 for a MDV made from some super steel?? thats what it boils down to.. you can preach the goodness of super steels all day long but if people wont pay for the material cost then you got no business.. you have to build using material that people can afford. We all ready have a whole inbox full of people bitching about 225.00..
@@ThomasConnolly That is not true the D2 will rust more then other blade steels.. its not 1095 or any other high carbon steel.. again you have to maintain your equipment.. D2 does not have that much carbon in it compared to other carbon steels
I have been carrying this knife everyday (on and off duty) for about 5 months, no rust, no issues. The only thing I need to do is re-wrap the knife due to the monkey tape wearing down.
what tape is that exactly?
Monkey tape
available on the Sheath section of the website.
What is the width of the tape you’re using?
Its personal preference but that in the video is .2"
Not saying I disagree with the design choice, but I'm curious why not sharpen the back/top on the clip point edge as well? Is it better with only one sharp edge or is this more like a legal to sell in more areas type thing?
I am also considering the Clinch Pick but think your sheaths and hooked handle seem to make more sense overall.
I'm very intrigued and looking forward to them being in stock as well as some more videos for training considerations.
Thanks for what you're doing.
The reason is its a very small edc knife. If you watch closely, a lot of the techniques involve getting really close to or having your hand on the back end of the blade. I dont advise having a double edged blade that is built for purposes I needed this for. Its a personal preference. I did make sure the angle of the spine near the tip was at an angle where you could sharpen it if you completely disagree and have the ability to put an edge on it. I will always advise against it though. It will take away from some of the utility of the knife and self injury is high during dynamic engagements.
@@sliceymike Thanks for the response. That seems pretty inline with my intuition as well, but Craig at Shiv Works likes the back side sharpened. Different experts with different views. I am no expert and kinda lean to your way of thinking.
Shalom
@@AABlann "Different strokes for different folks" lol
For the purposes I'm using the MDv for, I have little use for the back edge being sharp. I understand why there would be a need for that feature, but I also understand that it would limit other utility that the design brings. Unfortunately, as you design purpose driven tools, you quickly learn that its impossible to create something that fits all needs within that subject matter. And it always comes back to personal preference, exp, and skill.
Thank you for the great questions and comment.
Will you ship to uk?
We ship internationally however its up to you to know what is legal to import. You dont want to buy a new knife for a Customs Agent.
@@Skallywagtactical lol as long its not classed as a zombie knife, self defense knife, folding lock knife...
above 3" blade fixed blade knife should be good as a collectable in the uk. Also due to brexit, would be interesting to understand import costs as they changed fron January 22 🙏
Restock when?
Small re-stock in a few days and another 500 in production due late November (guessing)
@@Skallywagtactical Intel much appreciated sir!
went to order one and out of stock
going through the Blem inventory now and more in production. if we have blems we can sell we will drop them this week. New inventory done in about 40 days or so
