There are many self-defense videos that demonstrate knife defense drills. However, it is important to remember that these drills are meant to train attributes and can be enjoyable. In reality, the scenario against a skilled knife attacker is very different. GM Oliver explains some simple concepts of a skilled attacker and what makes them so dangerous.
For more videos like this, we have put together an online course with GM Oliver Pintados learn more about it here: budobrothers.t...

My martial art teacher is a master against short range weapon, such as knife. He teach a move called the thousand step, in case you are facing someone with weapon the first step you do is rotate your whole body 180° facing back to the potential attacker then put your strong leg in front of the other and then followed by the other in quick succession. It's very effective and it saves me from many trouble in downtown London in the night

I've read about some martial arts self-defense techniques as well. Saw this one, where you prepare both your legs and feet in order to apply force against the floor, which in turn propels the user up, which can come very handy if you face obstacles. I think it was called the Airborne Dance. Seen another one which is kinda a mix of this one and the one you showed us, where you start with the Thousand Step move, before doing the Airborne Dance, and also includes using a full combination of your hands, arms, feet and legs in order to move your body upwards, however not everyone can pull this extremely demanding move, and I've seen some people suffer heart attacks upon trying the very first step of this move. I don't recommend doing it unless you're sure what you're doing.

Jocko said the same thing. He said I’m a Navy Seal and have killed many enemies but if some crazy guy on the street tries to fight me….I’m running away. Why bother fighting when my feet still work? Why?
Now if he grabs me that’s a different story. But if I can run….then simply run away.
That’s coming from a combat tested navy seal.
Good to see an FMA master say the same thing.

The advice I got in a self-defense class, by my sensei in martial arts was, regarding knives, was:
1: "Unless you're in very specific situations, and especially if the person with a knife is skilled, RUN. You cannot defend against a skilled attacker, and even an unskilled attacker can cut you to ribbons."
2: "if someone has you in a hold with knife to your throat, comply. A defensive disarm from this position is possible, but not recommended for anybody who is not very skilled in the first place."
3: "under very specific circumstances where you are threatened with a knife, a defensive disarm is possible."
But the biggest lesson I take from that is that defending against a knife is extremely dangerous, at best.

In Germany there were a few knife attacks in crowded places. Some of them ended fatally, in some the attacker could be overpowered, but only because the defenders threw suitcases, chairs or something like that at the attacker. Keeping your distance and attacking from a distance is the only chance to counterattack. You can also wrap a jacket or similar around your arms to protect your arms. Even a sharp knife will not easily cut through several layers of solid fabric or leather. But one must note that the torso remains unprotected.

A knife with a proper sharpening job done on it by a smith, is much much sharper than the edge you get coming from the factory. You dont want to be anywhere near an edge sharpened by a skilled person because it will go right through the clothing youre using to wrap your arms, like it wasnt even there.
I started bladesmithing classes at a local blacksmith shop after getting hooked on forged in fire show (like how many started lol) and honestly speaking man, edges i can get now make factory sharp look dull, it took a lot of practice but its pretty awesome how sharp i can get things now.
Encountering a custom edge on the street would be very rare, but you never know. Of course if you must absolutely wrap clothing around your arms, but if you can bail, just bail. I got stabbed as a kid by a bully in my arm, its no joke

One of my senseis happen to be a tailor himself. So yeah, it's better to run and if you can't, make sure you got something to shield yourself with. I can only ask other people to pay attention: in this video master do not involve his left hand at all. Its other simple thing that you may forget about in real fight - even if you catch "knife-holding" arm, next second you will get a left hook straight in your face, which will at least disorient you and most probably let you receive a knife stab in next 3 seconds. Be careful and take care.

I was trained to "give" the attacker an arm by keeping it out in front of me. People instinctually attack the part of you closest to them, so if you have an arm out in front of you, they'll go for that. It's gonna get stabbed/cut, but you can at least vaguely choose to keep all the damage localized to one body part while you try to get the blade out of their hands.

Any notion of reacting to the knife first and then acting offensively? like some movie bs, good luck, hope they are some mutt. I got out of both of mine alive, and there was NO defensive actions in either, I'm clearly not stating that as some best practice. There is none. Most are not going to display the knife early, and it will keep it in close, 80% of the time you will feel it before you see it. The other 20% ? luckytown, most likely a mutt....Watch your backside brother.

As a guy who's been involved in this real life scenario. The only way is distance , keep the distance , once it gets close. Dominate both hands, and know you made your mind to give everything you got or run . Because you will get stabbed once the distance closes. And most use the hands to deflect your defenses. It's very tough , but make sure you work on your cardio for the day you have to fight for your life . lucky for me the person didn't stab and left.

The thing about fighting in general, and a knife attack as described here, is that most people are pretty spastic when throwing strikes or slashes/stabs with all the speed they can muster. Even a "weak/out of shape" looking person can surprise you. This is where finesse based "styles", such as aikido, kung fu, etc can really get hurt because there simply isn't enough time. People "clobber" you pretty quick, especially if you start busting their face up. Even a fool with a knife can cut you up pretty bad unintentionally in some of the ways shown in this video, not because they are good, but because the knife is simply there, sharp, and crossing paths with your flesh amidst the flailing.

Knives aernt as sharp as they are in the movies leather tough denim thick heavy fabric will protect more than people realize. Also choosing long sleeves over short sleeves could make a difference. Preparation Is half the battle and having an edc kit with a gun, knife, taser even pepper spray could save your life against a bad guy with a knife. All that being said it definitely is beneficial to be trained in all the ranges of combat. Running isn't always an option. Your families or loved ones lives might be on the line.

I was in Philippine before for Taekwondo missionary of Church also recovering structures by typhoon for short term, and I made friend. He was so skinny and small but despite his size his arms and grips strength was insane. Something special everyone. I was in military but when we went duck hunt with air rifle they were shooting better than me. And my friend Ray threw knife at close distance duck and killed it. I also trained Kendo 10 years but one handed sword duel was so difficult. So heavy and they swing really fast and swap grip. They learned Taekwondo from me and they used it less than 3 months they learned spinning heel kick and showed me 2 knife experts friendly competition during fight wrestling one guy pulled opponents arm and kicked his head with spinning heel kick they modified my kicks for real combat. They are something special. As long as I show respect they are so friendly. Town kids and people I loved them. except police. Once, police were after me to mug me, so I ran to Security Officers of town, security officers told cover behind checkpoint box and pulled shotgun shouting to cops they were at stand off and police left in 30 seconds. It was year 2015 so maybe I don't have to worry about them. I thought I had to worry about local gangs but they were friendly. They respected me because I was rebuilding remodeling and building my military style shelter and teaching Taekwondo. But Cops chasing me with gun point was fuked up. 3 officers approached to me trying to grab me and put weeds in my pocket to get bail money so I kicked one officer's ankle he got fallen knocked him out officer pulling out 1911 but holster was broken? While I was head locking officer before that officer pulled out gun to point at me I kicked his face with pushing side kick because I don't wanna hurt anyone and I ran toward to my town Security Officers. They protected me I contacted embassy those officers got arrested.
    I got 2 questions
Ray told me that "you did good you may wrestle with men with guns but never jump on person with knife. What he said was true? Because my military instructor told me same thing. And after new president rules, are the cops no longer hostile to foreigners?

I am Colombian, Colombia is a crazy country and contrary to the popular belief an attacker with a knife can be beaten because I have seen it. Thing is most times you will get cut but cut doesn't always mean losing, if you can knock your opponent regardless if your arms are bleeding you still win. Sometimes your clothes will get cut but not your skin. Another consideration is that in real life the attacker with the knife is arrogant, they don't expect to be attacked, so if you hit or kick their hand the knife might drop since they might be taken by surprise. So yeah, most likely you will lose, or your clothes will get cut, but it is not imposible

The only criticism I have to say about this is that this is a simulated scenario. Although a skilled fighter who has experience against knives can deal with attackers, it ultimately all comes down to how fast the defender truly is and how well practiced they are. Knives are instruments or tools, so they are meant to difficult to defend against. However this isn’t the main point that I’m wanting to mention; in an ideal real life scenario, the defender would also be armed with blade. You don’t see this here. For this, I wouldn’t go as far to say that a skilled attacker just trumps the defender.
