John, I felt the same way about the fox 599 folder. (Same knife different blade.) So I purchased a trainer and carried it until I was comfortable. Doug marcaida would be a great guest on your show to interview for this knife. He would also have some good insight.

I agree with Charles. I too have a Fox 599. It is my daily carry and I have followed Doug Marcaida for years. You might want to check him out for his take on the Krambit. I also have the Krambit by CRKT called the "Provoke" and it deploys a lot differently

So...I'm not your intentended audience at all. I'm a mom, haven't carried a knife since doing tech work in high school, don't know a bit about kinds of knives. But here is what I get out of a video like this: men are different than women. And boys are different than girls. I was raised with girls, but my kids are all boys. Videos like this help me remember that my boys some day may want to learn effective self defence with a knife. And that it may include descriptions and moves that make me squeamish. But that if I do the hard work of training their character, then I don't need to see an interest like this as being "violent" or "toxic" like the culture would say. I see your intent to be self-controlled here. I don't see you being a show off, looking to intimidate or look macho. But the willingness to effectively use a tool to defend against an attacker with dark intentions...that is a good thing for a boy/man to want. And it is helpful for me to see it in a positive context like this. Thank you.

To be a prep it costs an arm and a leg, it goes without saying that it is extremely exciting to have a lot of weapons and to being good at marcial arts tho. Karambit is great tiny knife for carrying to use in short distance fights, although the majority of its users are cs go players and just carry it for fun

Another neat set of instruction to watch is Michael Janich with Martial Blade Concepts. I carry a folding karambit every now and then, but have since gone back to carrying my Spyderco Yojimbo 2. The Wharncliffe is also an excellent option for self-defense and might be a better legal option depending on one's locale.

Literally scrolling through the comments to see how many people mention Doug Marcaida. No disrespect to Jason Johnson, who is also very good at giving instruction on knife techniques, but Doug Marcaida sharing techniques on the show with his experience in Kali and Silat would be mind-blowing. Especially when we're talking about karambits and how to properly use the ring feature.

    • @Swearengen1980
      @Swearengen1980 2 года назад +1

I honestly don't see the appeal of a karambit folder. If you're putting yourself in a position for violence where a karambit is necessary for fighting, I'd think a fixed is more practical to draw, demploy, fight. For everyday "just in case" EDC, it's useless for any other task and the reality is, a regular knife will defend you near the same against an untrained opponent, which is 99.99% of who you'll encounter in everyday life. The 597 he's using in the video makes sense, it at least has a functional cutting edge. However I'd also opine that they're playing very loose with the term "karambit" just because it has a karambit ring.

  • @brahtrumpwonbigly7309

You often hear the phrase "Don't bring a knife to a gun fight." While true, that can be reversed to don't use a gun in a knife fight. If you carry both, there are distances where a knife can be employed more easily to more affect than a gun. (Inside a couple of feet to contact distance.)
Ideally, you use one or the other depending on circumstance and wouldn't deploy both simultaneously. Use the knife in close contact to break said contact and build distance then deploy the firearm. If it were a single attacker, you could also end the threat with the knife.

There are some good videos of Doug Marcaida demonstrating with the Fox 599 (same as this but with the traditional curved blade) and he recommends putting the ring between the first two joints of the finger (first being the one closest to the tip of the finger, not sure the technical term) so you can easily remove the finger. I have the 599 and several other karambits and I practice this way; it is very easy to keep retention with the ring (and be able to flip it forward for some nasty, sneaky techniques -- see the Marcaida videos or a Bastinelli video about the "blue worm" cut) but still be able to very quickly slip the finger out for safety/different grip.
With my 599 I put on both pocket clips (mine came with an extra one and I think they all do) so I can quickly carry it for either a forward grip or an underhand grip.
Also, I would personally never put my off side forward because it becomes an easy target. I prefer to put the knife forward and swipe at the nearest target, with the offhand arm up just in case I would need to block with the outside of the arm if something gets past my knife hand.

Nice watching this guy explain it and SO glad to see him pick the grip he would use because so many want to say hold it in a "traditional way" which actually isn't traditional at all. Absolutely love these, but after yrs of having them it is obvious they are best suited for t-shirt wearing attackers unless your going for the throat. I've yet to see anyone demo one going through a jacket with some layers under it by using any claw slashing strikes. So if you live in a warm weather all yr round area then carry it, if not then a thrusting blade is going to be better. AND the makers might call that a Karambit, but come on, it's basically a straight blade. The "finger ring" doesn't make a knife a Karambit.

Hey guys, I didn’t really know where to go and share this so I figured that this would be a good place.
The WPS karambit likely saved my life a few weeks back.
I’m currently a college student and I work at a Jimmy John’s part time to support my living costs. A few weeks ago on a Saturday night, I was getting off work but the one I work at stays open til 2am because it’s one of the only restaurants surrounded by all the college bars. I was walking to my car and realized there was a person hunched over by my car. I didn’t know what he was doing until I got a little closer. I figured out it was a drunk frat guy urinating on my vehicle. I politely but firmly told him to leave my vehicle, but he refused and then called his friends over from around the vehicle. 3 more people came over, and I made sure to say look guys I’m not looking for any issues, I just need my car. They continued to advance towards me and smirking to eachother about how “easy” this was going to be and I suddenly realized the gravity of the situation. If I get jumped, I could get really hurt or killed and I wasn’t concealed carrying because I had just gotten off work and I didn’t really know if my manager would allow that or not. Running would also be difficult through the maze of cars behind me and me being in my work shoes they would surely catch up to me. So I reached in my pocket and flipped out my WPS karambit. Didn’t wave it around or threaten anyone with it, just had it in my hand in case I got jumped by multiple attackers. The other guys stopped when they saw that it was now a fair fight, and actually at that moment 2 of my coworkers that were also leaving saw the other group trying to close the gap on me and ran over and shouted for them to leave or that we were going to call the police.
Never would have thought that choosing a job at a sandwich restaurant could have almost gotten me in a situation like that, but I’m glad I got out alright.
Really thankful to WPS as well as my coworkers who helped me out.

I was planning on attacking you when I knew you only mastered 3,057 ways to instantly kill me, but now that you’re learning the 3,058th, I’m having second thoughts. 🤣 Good on you for continuing to add “tools to the tool box,” awesome stuff.

Undergrip is a defense. Pinky in ring, single surprise swipe and or trap. His left to right transfer seems posture breaking.
