I'm surprised I need to ask this question after watching the video but: How do you press the letter keys on home row if they are in use as modifier keys? It only engages as a modifier if you hold it down?
Correct, the letter is activated by tapping, while the modifier is activated by holding. In both ZMK and Kanata you can configure the timing aspects for Tap and Hold. I use ZMK on the Glove80 but alternatively you can try HRM with Kanata as described on sites.google.com/view/keyboards/research/homerow-mods-explained HRM rocks, wkr, M
@@moosyresearch6591 so what do you do to repeat a letter in the home row, for instance youtube uses L as a hotkey to skip 10s so you can't repeat the key by holding it just by tapping multiple times? can you disable that or add another modifier key to turn toggle the holding activation?
You would use your right hand to press the modifier, so with QWERTY, you would hold J for Shift if you want an uppercase F. From an ergonomic perspective, it's best to use the modifier with the opposite hand to avoid 'finger yoga' with one hand. This is also known as bilateral HRM. It's all about ergonomics and less finger movement, you fingers should be on the home row. See HRM in action with Bueny www.youtube.com/@bueny52/videos

@@laughingvampire7555 Yes, you can - depending on HRM implementation. I can with my ZMK HRM.
this looks so complicated, pressing an alphanumeric code for every key that in a regular layout just takes one key
Sorry, but it seems you didn’t quite get the point of HRM. This is about modifiers.
What do you do when you want to press Shift + F or Ctrl + D?

@@moosyresearch6591Ah, I see. It kinda sucks you have to make an exception for only those few keys but I guess you would get used to it overtime
@@cosmicslime1496 no exceptions, I just use left mods for right side and vise versa. It's just fabulous
@@moosyresearch6591Ooh yea I see now, that makes so much more sense. I think I'm going to start using this too. Thanks!
and this forces you to use two hands
Normal modifiers are still usable, but typically both hands stay on the home row while typing, especially if you have a good typing speed. (wpm)
