Saving a Damaged MDF Dresser From the Trash || Repairing Bubbled MDF || Extreme Furniture Makeover

- In today's video I will be showing you how I saved this damaged MDF dresser from the trash. I don't normally work on MDF pieces, but when something has potential to be fixed, I do like to do so to prevent it from going in the trash. This piece is a combination of MDF and solid wood. The top, sides, and drawers are all MDF, the drawer housing and bottom skirting are solid wood. There was significant damage on this piece. The MDF had bubbled in several areas, there was a missing corner on a drawer, several of the drawer tracks had disconnected from the drawer, and the entire piece was covered in scratches and dings. I was able to repair all of these issues and bring it back to usable condition, as well as make it aesthetically beautiful.
I'm so glad I was able to save this piece and I hope it goes to someone who will use it and appreciate it for years to come.
If you enjoyed this video please give it a thumbs up, and if you didn't give it a thumbs down! Thanks for watching!
xoxo,
Holly

Great job. I appreciate seeing an MDF flip. They are everywhere and really challenging.
🐼 Big Bear Hugs from a 68 yr old grandma in Kirby, Texas, USA 🐼 ❤ 🎀
I really enjoyed your informative narrative and quick pace. Color was something I'd never think of using but it turned out so well and neutral that I plan to use it on my next project. Good sequencing of before & after photos.
Thank you so much---I really appreciate your feedback!
Let me know how you like the paint!
These MDF pieces are some of my favorite to flip. So many think they are garbage, but they can be made so pretty and durable like this one! :)
i agree. thank you :)
This was a helpful video overall. However It would have made it better if you had included video of how you repaired the bottom edge of the side and the missing corner of the drawer. Turned great! I'm hopeful I 'll be able to make my manufactured home kitchen and bath cabinets look better.
Impressive. I’ve got a couple of MDF dressers. I thought the weee s lost cause. But thank you gir giving me hope
i'm so glad to help! you got this!!!
Good job on the attention to detail.
Thanks!
It looks clean, fresh and soooo much better! You saved this, now, beauty from the landfill.
Thank you so much ❤
Great refresh! In my experience finishing outside greatly reduces the time you have to work with the paint whether its extra air flow, warmth or sun it dries faster leading to more brush strokes showing.
yes that very well may be true. i enjoy my time more working outside so it's okay :)
Its beutifull love the color and handles🦋
Thank you so much!
Hampton Olive is one of my favorite Silk colors. This dresser looks amazing now. 💚
One of my favorites too! Thank you ☺
Beautiful job!
Thank you!
Sooo pretty!!
The reuse of a dresser in that kind of shape is pretty cool(very green) and the green color looks absolutely fabulous with the drawer pulls you ordered...as always...great job
thank you so much!
I appreciated the care and time spent to save this piece. I'm saving a leather topped desk made with a combination of MDF with veneer and solid wood so finding this video was like finding a buried treasure. I must say, too, that your voice was pleasant and easy to listen to. I liked that you showed more than a few seconds of each process without the unnecessary chatter I find on other channels. You're the first person I have found that I was happy to subscribe. Thank you!
Beautiful transformation! I can't believe how it turned out.
Amazing transformation Holly! I love how meticulous you are!
Thank you so much 🤗
What a transformation. I love everything about it.
Thank you ❤
Thank you for making this video. I'm trying to repair an MDF piece and looking for tips all over RUclips. This was very helpful! And I think it turned out so beautiful!
Great job! Try Japanese wallpaper for lining drawers.
thanks!
Awesome work! Really like the colour!
Thank you so much! ☺
Beautiful!
Thank you!
Wow…what a stylish dresser you created
Thank you! ☺
I love it!!! Thank you so much for taking it & giving it another chance at life. I think Sally would love the color you choose 🥰
Thank you so much, Ashley ☺❤
i am obsessed with this color! you choose well. the wallpaper lining the drawers was such a nice touch. amazing job. 🥰✨
Thank you so much 💜
First time seeing you and this video. Just subbed for a good reason. You're cute and good at what you showed here. So, hope to see you going with good audience for so many years ;-)
You really did a great job! That looks beautiful. Thank you so much for the video. I have an MDF to do and I was like shaking. I didn’t even think I wanted to do it but now I’m ready to go. Thank you again.
oh my goodness that makes my day to hear. i am so glad to help. you can do this 💪
Great tutorial!!!
thanks!
Beautiful job Hols. This colour is timeless and you did a fantastic job. MDF is not my favorite to work with but you totally tackled it and won!!!
Thanks so much, Sarah 💜 I really don't like refinishing MDF pieces either, but if they are on their way to the trash, I try my best to save them when I can.
Amazing!
I love all of your helpful tips!
I'm so glad!
Really good makeover. It looks very fresh and pretty. You have a really good eye.
It looks like the bubbled up area on the bottom sides sanded out smoothly. At first I would have considered adding a piece of wood trim to cover it. Nice work!
That would work too! Thanks for watching!
Great job. Thanks for sharing your technique for MDF. I’ll be referring back to this video when I do my next MDF piece. Suggestion: when using all in one paints...... paint indoors.
Seriously, what a chameleon color, definitely love how different it is in different light. This turned out gorgeous, Holly! So many issues but you brought it back to life. Haaaaaaate when that happens with hardware screws!
Yes, it totally is and I love it too!! Thank you so much ❤
It happens way too often and I still get mad every time 😂
What a big, no, I mean HUGE difference!
Yes indeed! ☺
Absolutely love this color. I'm going to try it out on a small side table. Always enjoy watching your transformations.
Thank you so much! Let me know how it goes :)
Great job!!! Looks beautiful...wish you could fix my side tables :)
aww thank you so much ❤
You did a really good job on this. I love the color, I may try it on something.
Thank you so much! You should!
You did a Fabulous job ! The colour looks Gorgeous 👍
Didn’t think ide like that colour , but once it was Finished I Loved it 👍❤️the liners and the Handles
Thanks so much 😊
It turned out beautiful! Love this color!
Thank you, Kim 💜
That turned out really well. I actually have that same dresser. I never thought to change the hardware on it. I might do that. It would update it a lot by just doing that.
Thank you! Hardware can make a huge difference, even without painting. It's such an easy way to change up the style of the piece ☺
@@ChicAntiquebyHolly I agree! Especially when your piece has those weird, elaborate, 70's-80's style knocker things on it!
It looks great! Love the handles!
Beautiful transformation!
Thank you! 😊
Great save ---the piece looks awesome --Love the Frogs!!
Thanks a bunch! ☺🐸
So pretty! I love seeing your bars that you painted. They look so good!
Thank you so much!
Turned out beautiful!
Thank you! ☺
Nice job, I saw a similar dresser on the Facebook marketplace, better condition. Idk what color to use.
I'd definitely recommend this color! I think it would also look pretty in a dusty pink, light gray, or creamy white.
You did an amazing job. Beautiful work
Thank you so much!
Wow, this turned out GREAT!!
Thank you so much!
Great transformation!!
Thank you!!
Very nice. The change is amazing. I don't really have a preference in colors. I like them all😀
Thank you! I like them all too ❤
Great job. 💫
Ty for this vid. 👌
I really appreciate that---thank you 😊
Beautiful job.
Love the color 😍.
Thank you so much :)
You did a great job.

wow that turned out so good x
Thank you :)
It looks amazing! I would love to know how you repaired the damaged corner on the bottom drawer.
I wasn't sure if this cheaply manufactured dresser was worth the effort. But your result is convincing. Very pretty!! & Happy Easter...
Thank you so much! 😊
Could you use clear wax as a topcoat? You answered my question! Thank you! Great work!
Yes! ☺ Thanks for watching!
P.s. love the bloopers
Thank you 😄
Amazing job. I have a coffee table that is part mdf/particle board and wanted to lime wash the top once sanded. Do you think this is a possibility?
This is great! I’ve just picked up a set of drawers and the plastic covering is coming off the top of the mdf on the top and other small areas. Can I do the same as this and take off the film in the damaged areas and fill and then sand over the top? I’m wanting to paint it also. 😊
yes i would do the same thing i did. it's very important to seal with shellac so don't forget that part! i can't remember what wood filler i used in this video but you should proabably use bondo all purpose filler for extra durability.
I noticed you didn't replace the internal hardware. Would have been nice to do that.
Hallo liebe Freunde!
How did you fix the corner of the last drawer? I didn’t see that in the video.
Needs transfers and gilding wax . its pretty
agree to disagree!
Amazing! Can I ask how did you fix the damage to the front of the bottom drawer? Was it with the wood filler?
That’s what I was thinking too. How did she fix that?
Beautiful piece! But how did you fix the corner of that bottom drawer?
i "rebuilt" it using bondo!
How come you started with 120 and not less? I’m trying to learn
That looks really nice. What did you sell it for? Seems like the market is horrible right now.
Thanks! The market seems to be different for everyone, but it hasn't been the best in my area lately. I don't share the business side here on RUclips, but I always share when my pieces sell over on Instagram. Thanks for watching!
@@ChicAntiquebyHolly Nope. Not chasing an answer. never mind.
Ngl I was a bit worried for a sec until you said Dixie Belle made the Silk product. It's not a Chic Antique video without Dixie Belle
Also frogs supremacy
😂
Yes sir 🙌
Where did u get your gloves?
Home Depot!
This just goes to show even the cheapest furniture can be made good. After all, not every piece is solid oak or walnut.
Yes, true!
I watched because there was a damaged corner of the bottom drawer. Where is the footage of you fixing the corner of the MDF ? I watched this twice and there is nothing. Im working on a piece with a chunk out of the corner . So disappointing when you show the damage and then don’t show how you fixed it.
I hit record on my camera and the battery died a few seconds later without my knowledge. I used the same wood filler as I used on the top, built it up in small layers, and sanded it smooth. I forgot to mention this in the video. I apologize.
@@ChicAntiquebyHolly Thank you . Did you shellac over it to keep it strong at all ? I’m finding my wood putty doesn’t want to stick to the MDF .
@@debkeyworth8429 yes I did use shellac over everything. I would recommend the filler I used as it’s very strong and adheres to almost every surface. You could also use Bondo wood filler, which is even stronger. It’s just harder to sand.
If you are still struggling, I would recommend drilling a pilot hole and putting a small screw in the damaged area and leave the screw head exposed. Then the wood filler will attach to the screw and have a stronger bond.
@@ChicAntiquebyHolly wonderful suggestions… thank you !
@@debkeyworth8429 of course. Hope it goes well 🙏🏻
