- In this video, I will explain step by step on how to get macOS Monterey installed on hardware that is no longer supported by Apple. We will do this using the OpenCore Legacy Patcher. For this video, I'll be using an iMac late 2013 but this method should work for Mac Mini, Mac Pro, MacBook Air or Pro and different models of iMacs as well.
Newer version of macOS: Sonoma
In the meanwhile, macOS Sonoma has been released. A very similar method is available to install the latest version of macOS on unsupported hardware. I did a separate video that covers that version of macOS,. You can find that one over here: • Install macOS Sonoma o...

This is what a great Video Tutorial should be. Great explanations, arguments, step by step guidance, clear voice and expected results. Great job and thank you so much, new subscriber :)
Very helpful! My MacBook Pro 2014 was successfully installed this version and I can't wait to see how it works with my iPad Pro via the Universal Control feature! Thanks a lot!
Thank you so much..after going through all the process it finally worked and even managed to get the latest Monterey 12.4 ..God bless you Sir
Thank you so much!!! This tutorial was great !!! My mac was updated to Monterey, and the last OpenCore is visual and extremaly simple.
I also use my 2013 iMac, and thanks for teaching us high-tech for running!
I might run Monterey but I wanted to comment that you deserve a 100,000 subs!
writing this on a late 2009 IMAC!!! Running Monterey
I just updated my MBP mid 2012 to Sonoma using your method and seems to work pretty well. Thank you so much!!
This was so helpful! Thank you so much for making such a clear guide!
Thank you so much - with your video I understood how open core works
Working great on my MacBook Pro mid-2009 8Gb/SSD ! Thank you so much
Wow! Fascinating to hear that it works on such an old machine! Awesome!
In case you'd like to install latest macOS Sonoma on unsupported hardware instead, check out the video I did for that: ruclips.net/video/acpQuCIy3GA/видео.html
That was amazing! Thank you so much! My 2013 iMac is relative again and can play my air pods!
I have 27 inch 2013 imac, was thinking of doing the same? would you recommend? Thanks
I’m on a 2013 IMac , This works , Thank you so much !
Video very well explained and organized! 100%
Thanks man!
i was wondering why my macbook pro 2014 15inch system was failing and not working properly but i did this and it worked so fine. Lovely works perfectly Its fast and quick Thanks man!
Dude thanx so much this worked on my iMac 14,2 thanx so much I am so happy you just got a sub and a like thanx you. I also screwed my iMac though it Woden let me boot up Monterey I fixed it after 4 hours. Thanx you for this video.
Thanks man! This was very helpful.
Great video. Thanks Jens. I’ll try upgrading the Mac Pro 5 1 to Monterey later
Were you able to install on your 5,1? I've installed Monterey on 2012 MBP and 2013 MBP. I'm waiting to hear a few successful installs on 5,1 before I try it.
Thanks a lot Mate ...i managed to upgrade my MacPro 5.1
Thank you so much! Everyone works fine for me
Mr. Macintosh has a lot of handy stuff.
Great video thank you going to try this on my 2012 Mac Pro
Kevin, did it work?
Hi have installed Monterey on my 2012 13 inch MacBook Pro. All working fine Graphics acceleration fine.👍
Good to hear. Thanks for the feedback :)
Thank you so much it worked!! :D :D
Excellent video very well explained by following your instructions everything went perfect thank you!
this tutorial is very helpful and thank you so much for this great video.
I have a question, I want to clone my SSD 120 GB with Monterey from my Mac Pro 5.1 to a newer 250 GB, I have it with super duper and also carbon copy cloner but it doesn't work, is there a way to do that? thank you
I did my first upgrade test of OpenCore today. I have a late 2013, 13" that has Big Sur as the official support cut off. Installed OpenCore , and did an OTA update as I normally would have such as what I did on my late 2015 iMac, and things have worked great. The only change I made was to disable to boot picker after everything was confirmed working so it just boots now, and doesn't ask. I only had 2 small glitches, each only happened once, and things have been working since. I am very pleased with the performance. Works as good as Big Sur, maybe slightly better.
How did you disable boot picker? I am running thru the same problem. Everything works perfect, but every time I power on -- it has a startup error and I need to hold down OPTION and select the EFI boot for it to run normal.
@@jaygriddles In the openCore app, you have to go into the miscellaneous options set show boot picker to false, then rebuild open core and install it with the new settings.
@@macinman Thank you! This helped. I didn't realize I had to adjust the settings, rebuild and then install/patch. Loving it so far on my 2014 MBP.
@@jaygriddles You're welcome, John. It worked well on my late 13, 13" MBP, but I decided to go back to Mojave on that computer, so I would have an older mac for 32 bit support. I have my late 2015, 27" iMac that still runs current software. So, now I can have the best of both worlds. I mainly want the 32 bit support for some old games from Gog that never got updated with a 64-bit runtime, and they work fine in VMware through windows, but why bother with the extra layer when I have a second computer that can work just as good as a dedicated machine.
Amazing Information thank you so much o=for making this video Love from Mumbai India - KIRTAN CREATIVE
Thanks much appreciated
On iMac 27” mid 2010, i5, 16gb ram, hdd 1TB, ati hd5750 1gb. Everything work, with little help on resxtreme fix color. Thank You very much 👍
Hi Mark, how have you handle it, with the glitches issue? I have a iMac late 2009 27" and updated by open core patcher, every thing works fine, only the graphics issues?
Have you got any information for me? Thx
please change the HDD to SSD😊
@@samuel_ford04 I will 😀
Works like a charm! Updated my mac mini today. Thank you so much for this video!! Helped a lot to increase my mac mini's life ❤️
I just wanted to say thank you sir... I normally watch Mr. Macintosh videos but you were doing this on the exact iMac I have...
My dad was going to buy a brand new Mac 2021 but this was sitting in my room collecting dust so I gave this to him. My hope is that nothing goes wrong in the future because he wouldn't know what to do...
I didn't have a chance to dig deeper into what those patches were all about and what the app itself requires but it is working great, a couple apps that got transferred over no longer worked but I guess it's expected.
Only major problem would be if an update were to break something. So maybe you could try disabling automatic updates
@@juang468 good point thanks
Muchas gracias!!!
great topic and thanks for useful information when i try to install opencore legacy it cant find the usb disk i tried to change when erase to other format but same
I used the GUI OpenCore patcher on my 2012 Macbook Pro 13" and it works just fine! I've had only two minor glitches with it so far. Videos set to autoplay crashes and reloads aTwitter page every time. They don't play at all on Firefox, so something weird going on there. All other embedded video autoplayback (on the BBC, for example) works OK. I've also encountered failures to wake from sleep a couple of times, forcing a hard reboot in each case. The only connection between them was the optical drive suddenly activating while the machine was asleep. No media was installed though.
Thank You
thank you
Thanks u so much!
Thanks for the nice feedback. Glad to see it helped you.
For anyone wondering Apple came out with an update to Monterrey yesterday. If you had an unsupported graphics card like I did you will need to perform the fix using open core again
+1
Thank you for the video, I am thinking about doing this for my Macbook pro 15 late 2013 but probably not since Big Sur is working just fine. So apple product only support up to 5-6 yrs? my iPhone 6 is no longer support either.
If you had a capture card on your main system you could run a cable from the imac to the capture card to record the imac screen for better quality.
I know, might look into that. Not sure though if stuff like the bootloader and installation will be displayed through the external connector. But that might be a good excuse to get a Mac Pro or a Mini once again :)
Thank you for your help. I installed the software successfully. But now the graphics are bad. For example the sides of the Dock-bar are very ugly if you know what I mean. I tried the Post-Install Volume Patch but it said I my machine didn’t need patches. Do you know what is should do? I’m using an iMac late 2013 i5 8gb ssd. I’d be so happy if you could help me
Thank you Jens, this is a great guidance video!
I have installed Big Sur 11.6.2 on my unsupported MBP 10,1 mid 2012 with the help of the OCLP.
Now I want to install Monterey but there are a few hiccups.
My machine has 2 video cards Intel HD graphics 4000 and NVIDEA GeForce GT 650 M and both are not supported by Monterey. Is there a workaround for it? Will the Post-Install feature of the OLCP take care of this? I further Googled that the Bluetooth and WiFi may be compromised. How do I go around that obstacle please?
André
Both these issues most likely will be resolved by running the patches from OpenCore after the install. Just make sure you have the offline version handing (on a USB drive for example) as you will probably not be able to get it without Wifi. I'd recommend to try this first on a separate volume (dual boot) to make sure all is working.
how to disable SIP or access recovery mode by this open core legacy? because I installed on my macmini 6.1 and I can not disable the SIP , could you help me ?
Your video is very helpful, thank you so much. My imac did an update recently and while evertyhing was perfectly working, now everything is stucking, google chrome, doesn't work, its very slow, graphics became worst, even the option for Sleep mode doesn't work and i tried to downgrade to MAcos Catalina. Is there anything that i can do to fix this?
Awesome video. Thank you for this! I just updated Monterey a couple days ago and things feel a touch slower. Is it just me? Should we be re-installing some patches after updates for performance? Thanks for your help!
Depends a bit on the hardware but I saw the same. Maybe it becomes a tad too heavy although I have the same feeling on my 2019 MacBook Pro...
Thanks for the video. I have an issue. Everything just went fine till with when building OpenCore on the EFI of the USB. This message is returned ( what does it mean? Can I still continue with the other steps ? I'm confused. Thanks for the answer. I use a mid-2014 MacBook Pro with Big Sur 11.6.1 already installed . Message :
"PermissionError: [Errno 1] Operation not permitted: '/Volumes/EFI/EFI'
Can you do this on a external SSD?
In theory yes. Didn't test this though. Let us know if you do :)
With opencore yes you can
I think so
Everything was fine but, while using Word 2019, the texts get shaded (gray) and hidden with rectangular box whenever selected for making bold or italic. 😢 Do you have any clue?
Very good, I would like to install Monterery on iMac (21.5 inches, late 2013). Now I have BigSur patched with South Patched. Do I have to do the same as in the video ?? Once installed, do I have to make any adjustments to the opencore?
Just like in the video, run the patches as well (option 3 after installing OpenCore to the internal drive)
Does the latest OCLP not required SIP disabled (or handles it more gracefully) - I had asked around about the need to disabled SIP for patching the graphics (e.g. HD4000) and whether SIP could be re-enabled afterward.. anyone?
Hey brother! great video, the steps were really easy to follow. Everything downloaded and loaded perfectly, the only thing is some games that I use are no longer working. How could I revert back to Catalina? thanks in advance
If you did an upgrade, I don't think there is an easy way to downgrade unfortunately.
To go back to Catalina, you will need to take a backup and do a fresh install of it. Did a video on that progress as well a while back: ruclips.net/video/D0mBiOFswWg/видео.html
@@jensdbe Than you man!
Hello, after patching you can install the application via App store and Xcode application
Thank you! Great video
One question. Once the OS is installed via Legacy patcher is it possible to do a reset of the mac via the recovery partition and come again to OS monterey? Furthermore, what will need to be done to update the newer OS monterey version or even the next software? Is that even possible with this process?
- About a reset through the recovery partition: not sure, have never tried it but you could always do a fresh install (little more work, I know)
- Updates can be installed as on a supported version but if you need some patches, you might need to re-apply them. So it's a good idea to keep the offline-patcher somewhere on your system when you plan to do an update. I upgraded twice now on this install without any issues.
I have iMac mid 2011 and before this i used it wireles external monitor for my macbook via airserver. But now after this update even that wont work, neither airdrop or anything else related to wireless communication. Only apples own mouse and keyboard work via bt?
Hey so I followed your video to the fine hair got it past open core through the usb and installing but it’s stuck at like maybe 35% on the Apple logo and black background. Any help? Upgrading from high sierra.
Same here. Did you find a solution? I'm currently experiencing the same.
Open core worked on others versions MacOs like mojave if I want installed on macbook pro 2007?
If you have method how to make bootable usb macos from windows?
When click on efi Bot on debug screen it stuck i have seen 2 messages “waiting for remote debugger connection" or "in memory panic stackshot succeeded” i got the same message when I tried to install big sur... actually I have Catalina OS I have MBP mid 12
Hi I did all the steps correctly but my Mac gets stuck on the black screen with the loading bar at the end I hear the sound from intro screen but no picture
I used bootcamp. Is there anyway to update the the macos to monterey while keeping the windows data? Please help!
One last question. Once the USB drive has been created, will it work on a different Mac, or is it only setup for that specific Mac and you have to create a USB drive for each Mac. Thank you.
OpenCore will be built specifically for the machine you do that on. What you can do is after you used the USB drive on one model, to go again through the patcher, choose the option to set a different model, then build OpenCore and re-install it to the USB drive. Then you can use it on another model.
Hello!!Need Help!!macbook air 11 2010
I do everything according to the instructions, hangs on the installation when 12 minutes remain and reboots, then a white screen, I tried many times, what's the problem ???
I used this on the iMac14.2 exact same model as yours and installed the Monterey 12.3.1 update and the brightness pad is greyed out. The graphics also seems to not work too well. Any idea how to fix this? Do I have install it just like I did before?
Most likely you will need to re-run the patcher part of the OpenCore Legacy Patcher. So far I had to do this after every update in Montery.
Do we get updates still like we would on other machines? // So far so good for me upgrading my iMac late 2013 model... Once it is install on internal hard drive instead of USB. We can take USB out??
Updates should work and indeed, the USB drive is no longer needed after that
I've got iMac early 2008. Tried to use OCLP 0.6.8 to install Monterey. I put the install on USB drive and tried to install Monterey on another USB drive. Picked the OCLP installer , then picked the regular Monterey install, said it would take 30 minutes , and after that it rebooted (though I didnt watch the screen) back to the Recovery screen to install again Monterey.. Seems it can't install correctly.
Now i'm trying on my imac early 2009 installing Monterey 12.2. Before using el capitan os. Hopefully everything will go well.
Good luck with the install, let me know how it went.

Is that expected or might this be the signature of something have gone wrong that has a work around?
The less thqn one minute remaining can last for a long time I noticed. Even on supported models
How long does the step where you erase the internal SSD for option 1 take? Mine seems to be taking a while.
It should take a few seconds up to a minute max.

Alright, I need your help again. Please. So now that we've gone through two updates since installing Monterey, my iMac can't take it anymore. We have the same exact iMac. After the first update, it started running a bit slow. After this newest update, it takes very long for any process to execute. After a while, the computer just shuts off, like its got too much going on. What should I do? Can I somehow start from scratch and do it all over again? Would that help my issues? I would like to keep Monterey and am willing to just revert back to the original Monterey if need be, before the updates. If so, would starting from scratch just be like erasing the hard drive or is there more to it? Thank you for this very helpful video that kept my old computer going, and thank you for any insight you can provide on this current issue.
I figured out that what makes it crash is when I minimize windows. For some reason that process slows it down to a halt almost, and then it restarts. Any advice?

Yes, this is working fine in my experience.
After last patching i restarted my imac 2009 and it stuck on 30% on apple logo. What i nees to do now? It is like 30 minutes now
Okey, so i turn off sip and nothing. I installed os few times and nothing seems working for mep
Is it possible to install MacOS Monetary on a Windows PC?
Well, I'm working on Monterey now....Downloaded it, installed into the Applications folder....but I'm getting an error in the Terminal window when I type: Macs-Mac-Pro: ~ % sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS/ Monterey.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia--volume /Volumes/Monterey OS (Monterey OS is the name of the usb drive) anyway the error I get is

ONe quick question - If i have an iMac 2013 with Intel Iris, i dont need to apply the patching stuff, right?

I believe it is not needed. You can always try to run the patcher and it will tell you if nothing is needed. But you would probably have noticed already if is :)
@@jensdbe Oh thanks for the reply! I will be getting this iMac next weekend and im planning on installing Monterey, just wanted to make sure im covered :)
@@jensdbe Some other questions:
- Can i use this same bootable USB to install it on supported machines? Or should i have separate USB drives with one for each?
- Let's say that I have a couple of different macs and i want to install it on each one, but since you need to create different builds depending on the mac. Do i need to wipe it, and go over the whole process for each one? Or can i overwrite the build? Not sure if i explained myself correctly

Hey jensd_be do you know a way to make the mac faster and smoother even with the patchers?
I don't really know any magic tricks unfortunately. Disabling the window animations does help to my idea. You can find that in Preferences -> Accessibility -> Display -> Reduce Motion and Reduce transparency. Sometimes you are just on the limits of the OS as well. A proper SSD or increasing the memory might be a great improvement in that case.
Why does it always bot up in safe mode even when i dont press shift?
Edit: skipped last test sorry haha
will it work on late 2009 iMac 21" ?
Do you have to use this for point releases after the initial Bir Sur to Monterey upgrade? I am using a late 2013 i7 with 16gig of ram.
Updates on Monterey will just come in as on a supported model. OpenCore is making the OS think it's on a supported device. It could be that you need to re-apply the patches though.
@@jensdbe this the first Mac I have owned and I am trying it as a daily driver. Is there a big deal to upgrade as it stands or is it about having the latest and greatest? Also I noticed a heat thing going when editing or using parallels. Is it that I need a new battery or do I need to take it apart and blow out the fans?
Thanks! Just got Monterey installed on my mid 2012 MacBook Pro with the quad core i7 and 16GB of RAM. Nice to know I'll get a few more years out of it.
