DISCLAIMER: Please understand that installing macOS Monterey on your unsupported Mac is a best effort by the community. A ton of work went into getting the patcher to work! Some things might not work exactly right but it's really really close. I would not recommend installing on a system that you rely on for work or school. ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR FILES FIRST BEFORE YOU UPGRADE! The good news is that you are getting the latest security fixes from Apple. Some might argue that upgrading to Patched Monterey makes your Mac safer since Apple is no longer fixing security issues on 10.14 and below.

Never been a RUclips commenter but this time my selfishness wasn’t enough to not show my appreciation. Very few times have I come across a tutorial so well articulated and easy to understand. I gave life back to my 2011 iMac that would’ve kept collecting dust for decades to come. It’s infuriating to think how Apple strategically restrains you from updating your old systems so you would buy their new ones. Truth is, Monterey runs smoother than ever in my 10 years old mac and I couldn’t be happier to save money instead of fuelling Apple’s wasteful system. Kudos to you! 👏

I assume you’ve upgraded your hardware to an SSD and more RAM? The average user doesn’t do that, and I think that’s why updates get cut off after a certain point. I can’t imagine it would run well on a spinning hard drive with four gigs of ram like you find in those older systems by default.
Edit: tried 4GB of ram in my 2012 MBP, with an SSD, and maaaaan was Catalina much less responsive, my guess is due to the page file being used quite a bit. Went back to 16GB lol

I know another individual said this but I too was so impressed with this full walk through. Our 2011 iMac hadn’t been used for some time (ahem.. maybe 2-3 years) and I was a little disappointed to find that some software we now wanted to use did not run on the OS and of course the standard updates no longer offered a path forward. A couple of hours investment and we now are back in business. Thank you Mr Macintosh and all the OpenCore support folks. More è-waste avoided for a little longer.

Thank you, Mr. Macintosh for doing videos like this and thanks to the people involved in putting out all of the OCLP versions that help people like me continue to use what Apple considers "obsolete" computers! I recently bought a 2012 iMac (13,1) for just $80 from a local university that was auctioning it online. It still had OS X Mountain Lion installed on it. I brought it up to MacOS Catalina using the regular Apple software updates, but thanks to this video I now have Monterey running on my 2012 iMac and it works great! The software update keeps showing me an update for Ventura, but since Monterey is working so well on my iMac right now, I may hold off on Ventura for a bit.

Hi i would be interested to know what Mac OS you upgraded from. I recently tried from Mojave to Big Sur and sadly failed. Had to reinstall Time Machine back to get going again and then disable the Boot EFI to get the mac to boot directly into High Sierra / Mojave. Am going to try again with Catalina but likely go the Dosdude route for that.

I upgraded my mid-2011 27 inch iMac (bought new for $1000 cdn) with a 500gig SSD and 12 gig ram but unable to find an easy and inexpensive way to upgrade the software. Then watched this video and successfully install Monterey a day ago. It helped to watch your video on my PC while performing the upgrading on my iMac! After the upgrade, software update said upgrade to macOS Ventura is available so I downloaded it and it installed!

OCLP is the best way to get an unsupported Mac updated to MacOS Monterey (and hopefully Ventura, when it arrives), and Mr Macintosh provides the best instructions on how to install. He goes quickly through the information, but he is thorough and comprehensive. I recommend watching the instructions from start to finish before you try OCLP for the first time, and then go back and follow the steps that you need for your personal machine.
I've been using OCLP for a while now on a Mac Pro 5,1 (2010). My machine has a Radeon RX580 graphics card which has the Macintosh ROM flashed by MacVidCards. I also replaced the WiFi and Bluetooth hardware cards with a more recent card from an iMac (I bought a kit on the auction site that provided the card, some cables and connectors, and instructions). With these two hardware upgrades, my Mac Pro has Metal-compatible graphics card and supported WiFi and Bluetooth, so OCLP does not need to install any legacy root patches.
One nice advantage to OCLP over other patching methods I had used previously for Big Sur is that my Mac Pro now receives and installs Monterey updates (including Beta versions) using Apple's standard Software Update. Before allowing Software Update to install an update, I check youtube to see if Mr Macintosh has installed and tested the update and verified that it has no problems.

Michael, thank you very much! You called it on your Mac Pro, it is in a perfect spot with an updated wifi / bt card & metal graphics card! It should continue to run well into the future. I hope the OCLP devs can get Ventura working 🤞

I rejuvenated an Early 2009 iMac with these instructions. It was not painless, as I missed some steps along the way and ended up having to perform a cold-erase install. I advise people to listen to the video at ¾ speed and pay close attention to the reboot sequences carefully. It's important to know exactly when and how long to hold that Option key! Otherwise this was a lifesaver -- this iMac was stuck on High Sierra and now it integrates smoothly with the rest of my Apple ecosystem.

Thank you so much for this! I was able to transition from Mojave to Monterey with my Mac Pro 5,1! It must be stressed; if you have ANY PERIPHERALS, multiple monitors connected to the GPU (I have three monitors to my RX 580), internal USB 3.0 cards, etc., DISCONNECT ALL OF THAT! I Cannot stress that enough.
All you need is the barebones of the system, USB keyboard and mouse, and one monitor to make this upgrade work. Trust me, it will save you time.
Also, if the OPTION key doesn't work with the restart to see/choose the other drives, do CMD + R (Recovery). The OPTION, never worked, period. I had to CMD+R, run the TERMINAL, DISABLE the SIP, restart, Boot back into Recovery (CMD+R), run TERMINAL again to mount the USB EFI, bless it, and restart.
I hope this helps anyone who had trouble.

@@olafszester2244 what finally got me up and running was to use a spare 2012 MacMini i7 quad ($120 CL purchase) to upgrade a clone of a Mojave install. OCLP balked at first using the MacPro configuration but I was able to get the install to proceed. Transferred the SSD into the MacPro and ran post install patches to get the wi-fi running and tweak the spoof level to get best performance out of the 580. Worked a lot better than yanking all the cards out of the MacPro and tinkering around with Terminal. The only software that won't run under Monterey thus far is X-Plane 11. Parallels VMs, Docker, Davinci 18, running quite well. When first running the setup on the Monterey install take the time to set up your iCloud. Your other iDevices will alert you login on a new Mac. I bypassed this process upgrading the girlfriend's Mini (she got a better machine out of the deal) and the preferences on her Monterey install would not take. Had to repeat the clone Catalina, OCLP upgrade to get that system up to speed with Monterey. Frustrating upgrade but worth it.

I have an Empty SSD drive installed and a 32GB at least thumb drive so I am good to plunge in the big adventure. I will follow religiously this video and upgrade. I cross my fingers. Thanks for your extraordinary work, it always impresses me how professional you are. Thanks to you i’ve been keeping my Late 2013 21.5’ iMac with an upgraded SSD always up to date for years, first with Patched Sur and now with Open Core Legacy Patcher. I wanted to ask you something: when I updated to Monterey with OCLP some months ago, I did it as an upgrade having Big Sur (that it was done thanks to Patched Sur), and even though it has worked amazing, being able to enjoy all new features flawlessly, I’ve had to deal with reaaaally long booting times every time I turn on my Mac (that I didn’t have with Big Sur nor Catalina) and once in a while it can do some funny glitches that i can fix them by rebooting the Mac. So I was wondering, can I do a clean install to try to fix this issues using this process even though I’m already in Monterey with OCLP?
    Thanks and greetings from Chile!

The explanations are clear and precise. I consider myself successful in installing, via clean install, the latest Monterey build on my MacBook Pro 15 Retina, 15-inch, mid 2012 (10.1 model), which still works great. The Monterey is smoother and a little faster. I believe, I appreciate it.
Everything works well. I repeat myself - everything (or almost).
The only concern is that some applications constantly quit unexpectedly. Uninstalling and installing does not change anything.
Like, for example, ExpressVpn, which has a particularly strange behavior. It opens correctly, but as soon as I press "Connect" it quits unexpectedly. Strange, right?
Do you have an idea or suggestion to give me so that I can solve this problem?
Thank you very much in advance.

In all the forums they advised me to stay high sierra because the 512mb graphics card is not good for newer versions.
I have an imac 12.1 and I have read that all those who have upgraded to higher versions have had graphical problems.
      Explain please

After a few slight hiccups where the process to boot without the USB wasn't automatic ( just run the patcher again but perhaps don't remove the usb on reboot) it's now working like a charm on a 2009 white unibody. Thanks very much for this excellent guide!

Such an amazing detailed video for a process which is a little scary for the people like me who are not familiar with this kind of thing. Thank you so much!
