Hi mate, just passing by thought I will just share some of my own experience in case you end up regretting selling some of your prized possession. What you are going through now I reckon plenty of collectors also went through, and a lot of them will just decide to sell off practically everything coz that's the emotion at this moment, but not necessarily the right emotion. Thing is, I gone through the same, started to collect (action figures, 12 inch, anime figurines, transformers etc) due to passion but it inevitably will escalate to a mindset of collecting with an 'investment' intent because we all know some toys will have insane value due to scarcity, especially in a small market like Singapore. I ended up buying a lot of toys which I feel the value will rise to make a handsome profit, rather than buying items I truly like. After a few years, I started to lose the passion, not because I no longer like toys but due to my mindset became profit making, which imho should NEVER be the reason to collect toys. I then retired from this hobby and proceeded to sell of a sizeable chunk off my collection, mainly Hot Toys and Medicom 12 inch figures, because as you rightly stated, Singapore's weather will make these toys worthless eventually due to the materials used in this figures. Yes, I made good profit on most of what I sold but deep down I was happier to see items that I don't love no longer taking up space. I thought I was done with this hobby but when I stumble upon some nice looking collectibles, I still feel the love for them. It then dawned upon me that, I don't have to give up the hobby completely or sell off everything, because so long as we remove the 'making a profit' mentality out it, we can still continue to enjoy this hobby! So here I am, more than 10 years after wanting to retire from this hobby, still purchasing toys that I truly like and still feeling the joy of owning them. Which is another point you highlighted, yes, I also do not play with my action figures but at some point you may understand the magic is not about actually playing with them but to own them and just feel the joy of seeing them around your house, workplace. Some may argue it is stupid to spend so much without actually displaying them or playing with it but how many of us have all that space to display everything? Hence to me the sensible thing is to keep them intact and if one day the passion totally evaporated, it is always easier to sell an item MISB vs loose. I only unbox selective items that I truly NEED TO HOLD IT in my hand or display them ,otherwise they are all neatly stacked in various parts of the house. You also touched on the exorbitant prices of toys these days, which is 100% correct, but that only mean we should only go for items that we truly will feel regret for not owning. Set yourself a price threshold, don't adopt the 'must own whole set/series' mindset, just camp for discounts, hunt for best deals online, buy it pre-owned or if all else fails, just let it go, we can't win it all! The change in mindset and revert to basic approach I adopted truly helped me to course correct and Re-enjoy this hobby. Since then, I never bought anything which I don't love, nor pay a hefty premium chasing items that I missed. The only thing I still fall victim to is buying some items that are deeply discounted but I do not necessarily love a ton, well, I am human afterall lol. I do apologise for the lengthy reply but I sense your sincerity to post this video hence I felt compelled to share my tale. For example, you have a sweet range of DC statues, would be a real shame if sold them all because of your present state of mind. Point is, you probably don't need to sell ALL of them because a few of them bound to be really what you like a lot. Keep those that you feel attachment to and by all means sell the rest, use the same methodology for the rest of your collection and trust me, when you trimmed your stash to only those that you feel joy to look at / owning, you may realise you are merely transiting to that of a more rational, sensible and logical toy collector from now on. All the best and keep up the good work on your channel, Cheers~

i had to re-read a few times because each time i read your comment i am so appreciative that you actually took your time out of your schedule to pen such a meaning and also hearfelt story of your experience, and for that i am truely am humbled that you wrote it.
yes i totally agree with you on all the points you made.
i like you, am also still collecting, VERY selective. and because of my background in retail, i actually still do reselling because it still been lucrative for me to do so, on top of my own collection which i still need to sell down, and as you said, the economy for collecting toys its at its worse now more than ever unfortunately.
all in all, i still keep some in my collection, and i may do a collection tour down the road to talk about my journey in greater detail to get to where i am today.
again, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for this.

@@ASingaporeChipmunk No problem bro, sincere RUclips contents are a rarity and l felt your intent is genuine! And it helps that some of your collections are totally my type too! Was a huge Bishoujo figurine fan myself but had given up on them in recent years as the retail price is easily more than 2x more than its more reasonably priced days long ago, with practically no improvement in end product that warrant such a price hike. Btw, the Nier Automata statue of yours, trio of B2 / A2 / S9, truly a holy grail type of collection, happy that you took the plunge, a true collector indeed. As for me, I refuse to touch statue no matter how attracted I am, due mainly to price point and also space constraint. I maintain certain strict rules on myself that has served me well over the decades as a collector. Keep churning out sincere contents mate and you will surely find your audience. Letting go of a collection can feel like closing a chapter of life, but it’s also a way of making space for new experiences and perspectives. Over time, we realize that the joy of collecting came not just from the items themselves but from the journey of discovering them. As we grow, our priorities shift, and what once brought excitement may now feel like clutter. It's okay to move on, knowing that those pieces served their purpose in your life. Passing them on allows someone else to enjoy them, while you create room for what truly matters to you now.

Man the good old days. Like back then toy hunting was real mate.
When I was young I would literally make the trips regularly to go to our shopping district (local we Orchard Road shopping district) and start from one Toys R Us on one end and end at the other Toys R Us like maybe 7-8 bus stops later. Along the way stopping at other malls that carry toys too.
      That was real fun.

From a fellow Singaporean to another Singaporean. Don’t give up. RUclips changed my life and it could change yours. Be consistent with your uploads and these toys will be a revenue driving hobby for you. I don’t sell my figures to make money as RUclips provides me with a steady attractive income. If you can grow your RUclips you won’t mind having more and more toys.

One tip, diversify your videos. Do collection videos don’t just do a review on one figure which will not generate views in the long run. Make, shorts, reels, TikTok videos. Be diligent and active, then your collection has a purpose. If you do it well and consistently it will change your life!

I'm in the process of downsizing my figures and action figures. Never really collected action figures until the pandemic like most folks who picked up random hobbies during this period of time. The easy answer is simply space. I have most of my stuff in a storage unit and had to rent a larger one already. Additionally, I recently started looking for a serious relationship which I think would horrify most people looking at the size of my collection.

Fellow SGrean here who also LOVES horror, nice to know someone who collects horror here because most of the collectors around my age (20s) don't really have interest in horror, i remember seeing those Mcfarlane Movie Maniacs Jason, Predator etc when I was so young but could not afford, fast forward decades later now my shelves are full of horror, some Mcfarlane but mostly NECA as they have taken over the horror landscape. However I feel sad that I was not able to collect back in your time, I feel that was the best time to collect horror, I can still recall seeing shops full of horror and Alien vs Predator figures, they were so common and not that expensive back in the 2000s, nowadays a NECA figure will run you about SGD 50-60 !! Similarly I have also sold lots of my collection, mainly the Hasbro stuff because there is just too many to keep up, you think you may have the best ver of a character but a few months later, they release a better one, Hasbro stuff has also gone down in value because of this, other collectors also know Hasbro will release a better one in the near future so no point in paying a higher amount. I will never sell my horror collection however hahaha.

Back then it was REALLY joy to collect specifically the movie maniac lines.
Then came Sota toys with their line of more niche horror figures,
Then NECA took the slack from McFarlane which continued the line.
And yes the price was good too.
Now… I also can’t justify the prices of late.
Glad to have a fellow horror avid fan here! Thanks for stopping by!

Just happened to stumbled upon your channel.
I just collected my Studio 86 Commander Class Optimus Prime from Falcon Hanger prior to seeing your video.
My personal opinion is that there is way too many figures released by toy manufacturers.
Example: One Optimus Prime can have so many repaints and versions. Its crazy! Its just impossible to keep up.
I have only a modest collection and I also don't go all out and have the "collect everything".
The one rule to follow is always to learn to control yourself and not have the impulse to buy without thinking.
Always think carefully before showing your cash.
i only have less then 10 Hot Toys figures. Due to space constrains, price and maintenance I will never buy so much more.
Way too many releases, its crazy!

Spawnasia's ML price point was $14.90 for a long time, with the occasional rare / shortpack like Deadpool going to $24.90 at most.
There was sometimes a lelong bin, with figures going for as low as $8 or $6 (loose).
At Stamford House, there was a special backdoor access for a certain store owner with a trolley.
A full set of ML10 to build the Sentinel costs only $80 back then.
They were at the Cannery, followed by Stamford House, and then Nankin Row for a short while, and then they were gone.
Their store at the Cannery had the best displays. Stamford House was not too bad. Nankin Row was just a clearance outlet.
At the Cannery, there was a huge portrait of Todd McFarlane behind the cashier.
The immortal line, "Have means have, don't have means don't have", will be delivered if you ever ask if there are any more pieces of what you are looking for.
The crowd got so big sometimes at the Cannery that a "bouncer" was deployed sometimes.
Like you, I have encountered many of the same reasons to stop collecting. My collection spans Transformers (mostly third party), 1/6, 1/12 and model kits.
I spent about 2k on M.A.S.K on eBay in the early 2000s and I was done for M.A.S.K.
For collecting in this day and age, it is still manageable. By searching and monitoring several platforms, Taobao. Xianyu, Lazada, Amazon. Carousell, and utilizing their promos, I almost always manage to get at least 30%, if not half or more lower than retail for what I want. There was also a ton of McF going for $5 each at Taka's Black Friday last year. Granted they were mostly dregs, but still, there was quite a range. Luck and effort-based collecting. I don't know anyone who pays full retail all the time for toys anymore.
The key thing is defining what you want. It is easy to get carried away and end up with tons of stuff you don't need, and won't touch for years, and just end up selling or throwing them away.
Yes, investing in toys, just doesn't work. Highest ROI I got was maybe $400 or $500 profit on a single item, after 10 years maybe. There are better and faster ways to make more money.
Have fun, collect what you want, responsibly. It's ok to pause or quit if it stops being fun. Life in Singapore is high strung enough as it is.
    Thank you for the video.

@@ASingaporeChipmunk We are not too different. I am 3 years older.
I am also from the time where you need to rip the tag off the big ticket items at Toys 'R Us to purchase them.
Children also had to be accompanied by adults, and all bags had to be checked in.
The biggest one was at Marine Parade, 2 floors of toy heaven. First floor mass market toys, second floor was for super expensive nigh unattainable motorised drivable vehicles.
Fast forward 30 years or so, how things have changed. Now you need a permit from LTA to import those vehicles, lol.
The status of my collection is similar to what you have described.. I like to just look at them, to know I have them, and I hardly repose them for maybe years. I think as collectors age, the joy changes to different parts of the collecting process, or to different subject matter. Really, whatever brings you joy, just go for it.
Pleather on 1/6, especially HT, is doomed to fail in our climate, but it is a mixed bag. I have some that stood the test of time, just displayed in the cabinet, while others already disintegrated right in the box.
The biggest change I feel is how the whole scene transitioned within a span of about 20 years. Like you mentioned, there was a community which you can see and sort of recognize familiar faces on a weekly basis at CQ or even CSC, but now, I can get everything I want to collect without hardly having to leave the house. It's a shame, really. The good ol' days are truly gone.
      Cheers 👍

i started collecting with joytoy warhammer 40k figures a few years back. eventually, i put on the brakes when i finally got over my FOMO and i realized that i got too many figures, well over than my shelf capacity. now, i just buy the main figures that i want like the primarchs. i don't have a streamlined collection, but more on just buying what i want. i have the ironman 3 diorama (zd toys) because they are cheap enough but looks great on display. my first and probably my last big purchase is a threezero t60 power armor that has been re-released recently. i wanted that figure for such a long time but i couldn't afford it back then. sadly, it was no longer available when i am able to purchase one. now i have a chance to get one and i'm jumping on it.
honestly, there comes a time that i think to myself as to why i bought so many figures. especially when i add up how much i spent to get them, it's just too much so i ended up selling a chunk of it and lost a bit of money on them but that's okay. i'd rather have the money than have the figures deteriorate while inside boxes and not even being displayed. what i learned in my few years of collecting is to not let the fear of missing out (FOMO) get to you, and to also not be afraid of downsizing. you get a few money back and you can make others happy in the process.

@@ASingaporeChipmunk that is true. i came from the car scene so collecting figures are not nearly as expensive as car parts but the cost does add up in the long run. i've also exchanged thoughts with other small youtubers who are into collecting figures and some of them also sell figures that they don't have space for. selling gets you money and at the same time open up space for other stuff you might want to get.

You need to buy what is worth and what is not.not about just the love the toy and just buy it.alwayz look for limited edition and first production of toys.if they toy company have stop making their toys that the collection you need to hold on to.for reproduction basis, you need to keep the first original wave, other than that you dont dont need to buy unless there is a huge differ from the first wavs or mold.most important buy slowly and what is worth and what not worth to buy.

Less money to spend on. I prefer 1/12th action figures because they're semi affordable, posable (can't do statues) and nostalgia. Statues you can't change anything and it's usually too huge and 3-5x the price! But if you got money and space, go for broke.

    • @ASingaporeChipmunk
      @ASingaporeChipmunk  2 месяца назад +1

No wrong there. Definitely affordable. Heck the new line of street fighter figures by Jada toys are tempting me.
However, I already had my fair share of action figure fix back in the day with sota toys versions. And now I just want to stare at my figurines lol.

I have been selling off figures. I accumulated too many over the years, and it sucks the joy out of them because they can't all be displayed. But I have many I will never sell. I am 50 and in this phase for everything. Generally, as people (at least in the US), we have more stuff than we need and overconsume. Too many plastic figures/toys are produced these days; most will wind up in a landfill someday and have zero collectible value (most characters only enjoy 15 minutes of fame), not to mention the microplastics produced when manufacturing them. Also, many figures are too big and take up too much space; Marvel's 3.75" were the perfect figures; they don't take up much space, have excellent detail, and are easy to display.

Simple answer, takes too much space and too expensive. I have over maybe I stopped counting 60-70 figures/statues. And I've slowly got rid of the ones I impulse bought. I made a rule for myself too, finish the X-men team and the Batman family (Mafex). That's it, then I'll be done forever.

I'm moving away from collecting toys in general because they take up too much space and inevitably degrade over time (like you said)... I still display my favourite Hot Toys proudly but I just don't feel the same kind of excitement over toys anymore... it feels very "non-functional" compared to buying movies, music, games, etc

That's why it's super important to collect toys that you just genuinely love and not try to collect all of the toys that's available in the market. If you do this you'll feel burnt out and might quit collecting after a couple of years. Me personally I have a small collection but all of the figures that I bought is special to me and brings joy to me. When I stare and play at them it heals my inner child and that's what matters. I started coll, roughly 30 years ago. I learned that you coll figures, dont start coll $ signs, thats 1 mistake. Also i keep away from the giant franchise like marvel etc etc... i coll diff brands now, and im in to the chinese myth for the last years , and im happy with it. Not buying to think it wil be worth a lot in a few years, thats dumb. I sold a lot, but only to fund the new figures. For the moment the bst for figures is on a low level. And the most important thing is, the prices, they are a lot higher the last few years than they were. Also the ebay golddiggers are going crazy, they sell them at a good price, still to much, but its ok. but, they ask 170usd shipping, yeah, thats why i also stopped buying from ebay, that is just a bunch of thieves man. But take your time, think it over dude.... and focus on a few lines.... they have al plenty of figs to show....

    • @ASingaporeChipmunk
      @ASingaporeChipmunk  Месяц назад +1

to touch upon ebay, if you are talking about shipping, its actually beyond sellers control, more so if you are buying from USA as the shipping cost is not the seller indicating it, its ebay directly.
full transparency here i am a part time reseller on ebay hence i know what you mean which isnt wrong.
i for one am thankful again that you took your time to write this and for that, thank you again.

And finally, the wukong myth and along with water margin, three kingdoms, it finds his way to a larger coll group over the last year... but again, these figs are expensive, but off-course its up to the coll to spend what he wants. For me, having a family, kids, its not that easy. About the shipping prices on ebay, a while back, and I forgot what seller, told me, that if they sell the figure at a good retail price, they charge more on shipping to get actually more on the figures price.... now, I dont know if this whas not to be told, or a wrong way of explaining, it could al be something explained wrongly, so.... but again. At the end, the world is not cheap, and hobbies are the first that seems to go up....
