In Russia there's a tradition of the "semistrunnaya gitara", a seven string guitar tuned to open G (D G B D G B D). It's a wonderful sound, here's Evgeny Ryzhov playing variations on the theme of the Russian folk song "Here comes the postal troika."

    Semi-string guitar = half-a-string guitar.

Nah man, semistrunnaya means in russian sem'(7)+struna(string), so seven string=semistrunnaya

Somewhat surprised but really gladdened by this transcription! ❤
Some of my favourite romantic repertoire is from the semystrunka tradition, especially variation pieces. And I've always had a softer spot for the Russian compared to the Viennese and Spanish styles.
Pity the tradition was almost wiped out by the Soviets (as it had been associated with imperial army officers).
I wholeheartedly recommed Oleg Timofeyev and John Schneidermann's 1800-1850 album to all interested.
And I believe that Rob MacKillop and mr Timofeyev have some videos about this tradition in English on RUclips.

i guess is more of a Brazilian traditiopn....

Choro guitar is no more of a tradition than Russian semistrunnaya guitar. And they sound as different as Tchaikovsky does to Jobim.
And that’s before we consider than Russian guitar is dated to the late 18th century, while Brazilian Choro is late 19th.

@@LeviClay I didn't know about Russian 7 strings music, that's pretty cool. But besides Brazilian music, there's also a lot of classical 7+ strings guitar music from the 19th century. The first name that comes to my mind is Napoleon Coste. A French from the 19th century composing/playing for both floating and fretted 7 strings.

I should be clear, no part of me is insinuating that Russians invented seven string guitar. I’m just pointing out that this instrument is traditional in Russian folk history.
