John Wick vs Nobody: Face-Off

- With John Wick: Chapter 4 about to open in theaters, we thought now would be a great time to revisit two of the greatest action films in recent memory - JOHN WICK and NOBODY.
Keanu Reeves had already cemented himself as an action icon with hits like Speed, Point Break, and The Matrix before tackling the role of deadly assassin, John Wick. Released in 2014, the film was a sleeper hit and launched its own action franchise with 2 sequels - John Wick: Chapter 2 and Parabellum - along with more on the way. After penning the first three John Wick entries, screenwriter Derek Kolstad went on to draft the script for the Bob Odenkirk vehicle, Nobody, featuring another retired contract killer returning to his underworld roots. While that film didn’t rake in as much money as John Wick, it still performed very well for a film released at the height of the pandemic, placing number one at the box office in its opening weekend.
Both films share the same writer and producer, a Russian villain, similar themes and plot beats, as well as thoughtful world-building, but Nobody is much more than merely a John Wick clone. Even though John Wick has successfully ignited its own franchise, we’ll only be looking at the first film of the series to keep things fair. Be warned though: you should never underestimate a nobody. So suit up and give us that goddamn kitty cat bracelet, as we figure out which of these hired guns is the ultimate assassin… FACE OFF!
This episode of Face Off is written by Matthew Hacunda, narrated by Shawn Knippelberg, and edited by Ric Solomon. Let us know in the comments which action-packed film you prefer - John Wick or Nobody!

I can’t see these two battling each other but I can see them teaming up and kicking ass!
The creator said they're unlikely to ever meet, but would fight on the same side, if given the chance. The connections would be built more through easter eggs than direct interactions.
Both series are amazing watches. I saw Nobody with high expectations, and was not let down. Bob can do action. Which surprised me pleasantly.
Yeah Bob can do anything, he’s proven that now…. Wouldn’t surprise me if he got an Academy award for something sometime in the future.
I watched nobody with no expectations, and was pleasantly blown away
@@theBabyDead same
Agreed, I'd literally been waiting for months for nobody, was so excited I went with a mate to see it on my birthday which was also coincidentally the release date in australia, and I was still blown away by how good it is.
Perception bias warps judgement.
One reason I watch Nobody over and over is it's humor.
It burns hot and quick at only 90 minutes. Perfect length to watch at a snap or waiting for the girlfriend to get ready.
Comedic actors often surprise me with how capable of action they are
@@gustavoalmanza2673 have you seen Keanu? It’s a pretty good action movie with keye and peele
3:30 The eyes, the camera dolly, and the blood draining from the veteran's face was the first real sign that we were going to see nobody become somebody badass. The "thank you for your service" before locking the strong door with a dozen locks behind him was a nicely added touch.
Bob Odenkirk with Nobody was an unexpected amazing performance. I loved seeing him kick ass. Keanu was already amazing at action. Able to be compared to John Wick is an amazing compliment. Both of actors are outstanding in their own rights.
I don't think John would kill Nobody. I would like to see them go toe to toe then find out in the middle of the movie they were both being manipulated to kill each other then they team up and wreck shit.
So Mr. and Mrs Smith
Hell yea
John wick is a franchise nobody is a single outing. I loved nobody, but Keanu has more experience as action hero.
Apples and oranges, “nobody” took place in a more realistic world, John wick takes place in a world with a really cool cannon, and really cool mystique, but I love the way Odenkirk got his ass handed to him several times in Nobody, even though he had skills, which made it feel more realistic and more high stakes at times actually , I’m still gonna go with John Wick at the end of the day as the more entertaining films…. I just look at nobody as a really cool standalone film and John Wick is a series where they can just keep making them forever.
These badasses actually do exist in the same universe, which makes me smile whenever I think about it 😁
The creator said they're unlikely to ever meet, but would fight on the same side, if given the chance. The connections would be built more through easter eggs than direct interactions.
@@jaimel88 still waiting for the Easter eggs, the world feels completely different, it might just be a nice thought that the Director just decided to make cannon, but yeah, it does not feel like the same dimension or reality, or even rules of physics, it’s still cool though
I think that it would be a closer call, if Wick was out of the game longer, like Nobody. But I love them both just as much.
Nobody is one of my favourite films in recent years
John Wick any day.
Nobody is much better than JW.
@@slavwal941 yup
@@slavwal941 in what?
In a scene where nobody, his father and his old friend surrounded by a ton of shots around but still alive? Lol
Delusional
@@liamlvp3886 agreed, I think John Wick is a better assassin/marksman. If they have time to prepare, Nobody's way of setting traps, and planning way ahead of time makes me feel he would have the edge. But in like a cage match, JW would destroy Nobody... In points, but not a KO
Both are so damn good, but Nobody was a very good suprise how well it turned out.
Nobody has one thing that John wick will never have. A main character who can actually act.
*GAWD* i love both these movies so much!
they've both done wonders for the genre, and i'm glad you guys made this video
I'd like to think Hutch and John know one another and they have mutual respect for each other too. I'd love a moment of them sharing a drink in a movie.
"Hey John."
"Hey Hutch."
"I thought you retired?"
"I thought I heard the same."
"Yeah, I had to come back."
"Yeah. Me too."
And if they really wanted to do something special they could just have them team up taking out a group of bad guys for one action scene. That'd be awesome!
That would be badass, since they do exist in the same universe. I think the creator said they're unlikely to ever meet, but would fight on the same side, if given the chance. The connections would be built more through easter eggs than direct interactions.
There can only be one🎉and it’s John Wick. With some really great action and set pieces.
The face off I was truly waiting for 😂 thanks guys 😊
I like the more grounded reality of Nobody compared to the over-the-top setting of John Wick. While the action in JW is top notch, things like bulletproof suits and the sheer number of assassins tend to break the suspension of disbelief for me. Plus Nobody is more in line with my sense of humor. I've watched Nobody probably 5 times more than the Wick ones.
Bulletproof suits are a real thing
The first JW movie is more gritty realistic than the rest
“They call him Baba Yaga”
I love how wicks final boss was the oldest, least bad ass guy in the entire movie.
Having seen both these movies and both being completely badass and anyone who passes over Nobody is just your usual person using “cheese”….I was ready for a really good video saying; “ oh boy this is going to be good.”
Woah..I gotta give Nobody a watch
I think it's pretty close, but I think if you just take the first John Wick movie versus Nobody, then John Wick wins. If you factor in the extremely messy and plothole-filled sequels of John wick, then it can be a lot closer. But I think that John Wick's OG movie is just so fun and feels like a updated and big budget boondock saints. Loved 😍 it!
I think that the present-from-dead wife-puppy killing is the most elegant, yet simple, setup for a revenge plot...
For me, it's a tie in every category.
Bullet train is in my list of all time classic movies. I’ll be rewatching that masterpiece for decades to come
I stopped watching after the train collision scene because of how idiotic it was. Everyone should have died when the trains collided at 200+ miles per hour but somehow the train manages to shove the other train off the track like it's a ski ramp. Cartoon logic right there
That movie was fun but incredibly stupid. Wouldn't consider it a modern classic, let alone an all time one.
Honestly, I don't need to see Nobody and John having big scenes together. I would be satisfied just to see them cross paths within the Continental Hotel and maybe say a few words to each other, nothing more... ...just to tie the Universes together.
I feel like John wick is more of a soldier and hit man with nothing to lose but the memory of love and nobody is more of an informant/assassin with his specialty being obtaining information and more arms training than anything while John wick has more hand to hand combat training with everything to lose.
Nobody did violence so well, I puked in my empty popcorn bucket.
John Wick gets a contract to kill nobody he finds out who he is then gives back the money laughing.
I think the best way a John Wick/Nobody crossover could work (if they aren't already in the same universe) would be if there was some kind of truce between The High Table and the government (US at least). Because they don't know how big this crime syndicate is, and while they do have soldiers like Hutch who could match someone like John in combat, they don't have enough in comparison. So it's best if they don't interfere in each others business. Just my thoughts on how that could work.
loved both
Everyone's a gangsta till Saul Goodman starts speaking.
BTW, Vigo clearly says to his son that the nobody is John Wick. So how is John Wick supposed to fight with himself.
Both of these actors are incongruous in action movies.
Bill and Ted meets the fake doctor from Seinfeld.
Nobody and History or Violence would be a better match up
Not sure I care who wins but, as they are written by the same person, wonder if there's a possibility of John and Hutch teaming up, or crossing paths??
I think it's more or less confirmed that they exist in the same universe. The creator said they're unlikely to ever meet, but would fight on the same side, if given the chance. The connections would be built more through easter eggs than direct interactions.
Not a lot of things make me smile quite as much as the knowledge that these 2 badasses exist in the same universe 😁
The creator said they're unlikely to ever meet, but would fight on the same side, if given the chance. The connections would be built more through easter eggs than direct interactions.
After Hutch kills a bad guy he looks for ID of who the dead guy and finds a gold coin.
John Wick finds a kitty-cat bracelet.
Hutch needs a hotel room to find that one hotel called _The Continental_ which is "temporarily closed for maintenance repairs."
Hutch has his car pulled over by the police for a cracked windscreen and a broken tail light. The policeman is Jimmy.
Hutch takes his car to a repair shop. Aurelio says he can have it fixed by tomorrow morning.
Nobody was pretty solid .
Wick hands down
Just need a damn crossover
Didn't expect nobody to be great, but it was pretty fkn dope
Nobody followed in the shadow of John Wick.
John Wick 110% of the time.
There had better be a nobody sequel. Call it "somebody maybe." Then have the two worlds mix. Wick and Hutch. Call it "Don't tread on me!"
Nobody is more realistic.
Nobody don't even bother to reload or count bullets. The last shootout scene made no tactical sense, everyone was out in the open
@@ViolentCabbage-ym7ko I was reffering to the Bus fight scene.
@@Josh_Exitcamper I do agree that the bus fight scene was good, but the rest were average.
@@ViolentCabbage-ym7ko Especially when you pair it "when the doom music kicks in". :)
You kidding.... John Wick is in a league that won't be topped for a very long time....
For allies you forgot the barber from nobody, almost kind of like hutches winston
in my head canon, Jown Wick, Nobody and Payback with Melgibson are all in the same universe. when i first saw John Wick, it felt like the crime infested world i wanted to see more of after seeing payback in the late 90s. highly orginized crime syndicates, hotels as safezones.
John Wick, Nobody and Atomic Blonde must meet, with Pedro Pascal guest starring. I must live to see that movie.
The problem with Nobody is that he wasn't driven by revenge or protecting a kid like most action films. He's just an old man who desperately wants to hurt people again. It kinda makes his character into a bit of a lunatic. Sure, he eventually ends up targeting some people that deserve it but at no point can you get behind his motivations. You almost feel like, if he hadn't conveniently encountered that bus of thugs, he would have eventually just attacked anyone because his whole character is "Me Likey Violence"
Meanwhile, they kill Johns dog, I stand by everything he does after that.
I know the whole idea is to deviate from the Reluctant action hero by using one who gets off on it, but its not a character you root for. If Hutch had died in the film it would have fit his self destructive mentality
I can’t wait to see Nobody’s wife kicking asses. We just never know if she’s just as badass.
A much more fair comparison would be Nobody facing off against A History of Violence.
Wick clearly wins this but the other pair up would be two guys getting back into their old lives because they were forced into it.
I would legit like for these two films to have a crossover
That Fucking Nobody was John Wick... 😂
I am a fan of both.
Wonder why this was uploaded the other day then taken down only to be re-uploaded?
Guess what film opens tomorrow?
Prolly posted it too early? I was wondering the same thing 😂
Problem with the edit!
You broke the rules ...
In our movie.
You were also an actor in this movie.
just got back from jw4 premiere...fucking dope movie.
If John wick was on the high table hutch could be his chauffeur
Keanu had a 104 degree fever? Considering water boils at 100 at sea level, he must be a literal god!? Unless you're using that silly system that requires me to know complex math to understand it?
I like both movies equally well. I can’t wait to see John Wick chapter 5; and I think I saw that they’re making another nobody movie. I sure hope so.
I’m late to this but everybody loves John Wick but Nobody hands down the better movie
I think either of the first 2 rounds could be a tie, but the point remains that John Wick would always win! Nobody is a great movie but I have watch John Wick many more times!
This is a no contest type of face-off. John Wick wins all day every day.
I don’t know.. John’s dope.. but nobody is older and more seasoned.. he didn’t just come back out of nowhere like he never left.. nobody reinstated.. and went pound for pound..
Ok I can guess John Wick will win but Nobody was surprisingly awesome, and it was filmed mostly in my neighborhood
That anybody could have played Nobody is not true. For example I wouldn´t have bought Keanu in that role.
Both are absolutely brilliant! So for me, both win :D (but OK I guess Wick is a bigger world regarding lore so if I really had to choose..)
I hope there's a chance Nobody would eventually use some of the world JW built, since they exist in the same universe 😁 but yeah, Nobody's past is based around those "3-letter agencies", while JW's circle is the opposite criminal underworld.
The creator said they're unlikely to ever meet, but would fight on the same side, if given the chance. The connections would be built more through easter eggs than direct interactions.
Not really a fair comparison tbh. John Wick has become iconic at this point and while Nobody was fun it didn't quite hit that level.
That's not even remotely fair lmfao
I like both but you have to give it all to john wick films there stunning to watch. Nobody is very good but isn't up to the action and camera work of the wick films. But would i watch another nobody part 2 film hell yes
And, the winner...?
THE RAID 1 (2011) and THE RAID 2 (2014). :D
John Wick would win easily because John Wick knows Gun-Fu
Both of them vs Bart Curlish
John Wick 100%! Nobody was a fun and very enjoyable movie, though!
Ok both are great. John Wick was a surprise because the first 20 min, is a bit boring but same can be said for Nobody. Nobody scene with cops having to let him go is equal to Jimmy the cop ignoing John killing. Gold bars in basement similar to gold coins in basement. House fight gives same vibes on both with minor differences. Being captured and get3out is similar yet different. Destruction of the Russian money is similar but Nobody had more humor. The reason of the home invasion getting both back into the business is similar yet at the same time took different turns for the story line.
John Wick is amazing and so are the sequels. Nobody is also amazing and deserves a sequel.
I'm gonna give this one to mr. nobody... john wick seems to be all flashy and precise with style... nobody seems to be more rough and dirty
Okay, so this video is just a year late?
Bullet train is already out and it's not the summer
They are both great in every way but these obviously way too easy , John Wick all the way hands down just for who he is and probably the most lethal dangerous assassin killer , the guy is beyond the boogeyman killer you can't hide from , it's even mentioned going back to the 1st John Wick movie , I enjoyed Nobody too don't get me wrong but he wouldn't win by a longshot
how long ago did you make this? bullet train came out quite a while ago..
I want them to team up
Lol was this really deleted and reuploaded or just never uploaded?…
Nobody! I liked both, but Nobody is far more interesting. The character is not what he seems in the beginning and develops over the film. John Wick is who he seems to be almost from the beginning. The violence is more real, and therefore more visceral and captivating. The supporting cast has more depth, so much so, that I want to know about all of them. In John Wick, only Winston provoked my interest.
John Wick's Baba Yaga reference:
In Slavic folklore, Baba Yaga, also spelled Baba Jaga (from Polish), is a supernatural being who appears as a deformed and/or ferocious-looking ogress female with droopy tits. Eating its victims, usually children.
The scripted error actually referred to:
Babay or Babai (Russian: Баба́й)
Who is a night spirit (Bogeyman) in Slavic folklore. According to beliefs, he abducts children who do not sleep at night.
John Wick will be the OG for me, but what made Nobody special is the mysterious notoriety; John Wick's story has a world full of assassins and there are hundreds of guys just like him it just so happens that he's top tier level. Whereas Hutch belonged to an anonymous group that's considered to be lethal where everyone in the other side of the law feared them and Hutch was one of those few people, that's what made his story a lot more interesting considering we are only shown of what he's capable of but we haven't figured out who he really is and what kind of a man he was in the past.
actually they reveal his backstory in the film, about 2/3 of the way in. There's more in the lore to explore for sure, but they do reveal enough to understand what he did before the film.
John Wick, isn't even close nor fair because Nobody was legit too.
What if nobody and wick knew each other
I can take ‘em both
Joe Plissken
John Wick would body Mr Nobody
Nobody because it’s a new and more realistic because you don’t have to work out what the f### the coins do
Hello everyone , what do you think about the ending of John Wick 4? SPOILERS... I think the actors lost his Love In his personal life influenced the writing on the Tombstone at the end of the movie.
Pretty sure bullet train hasn't been in theaters for a while
This doesn't even seem fair
Another good example of "Average Joe/Dangerous Man" is Sam Rockwell in "Mr.Right". "Nobody"&"Mr.Right" would be an interesting match up, as being a great film "Nobody" wins. Wick&Nobody are kinda tried for me.
John Wick solos
Babayaga wins no contest here guys
Bullet Train came out a long time ago what are you talking about
I think Nobody is in the same universe as John Wick. Besides the parallels mentioned in the video their are more. Nobody had its own special currency as well. Then there is a kitten this time instead of a dog and it lives. The muscle cars in each movie are rivals of each other.
And maybe the films aren't connected but to me there are just to many parallels for them not to be.
They do exist in the same universe, but Nobody's past is based around those "3-letter agencies", while JW's circle is the opposite criminal underworld - it would be nice to see how these would eventually collide/play off one another.
The creator said they're unlikely to ever meet, but would fight on the same side, if given the chance. The connections would be built more through easter eggs than direct interactions.
John wicks martial art style is distinctly Japanese. I believe the creators of John Wick really want to distinguish it from the matrix Whitey style which is very kung fu based.
Why do these face offs when you know which is going to win? I love both movies but you know John Wick is going to win. Unfair comparisons. 4 movies of lore vs 1 stand alone movie. Not really fair and pretty pointless.
