  • This board is familiar. If you ever wanted or thought that the Seaside might work better if it were a tad narrower, in turn making it a tad longer, then this is the board you were dreaming of. The feel of the board off the bottom and through turns feels like a slimmer sexier version of the Seaside.
    Because of the design features of this board, it can handle slightly bigger waves so it would be a good minor step up from something else you might have, a board like the Firewire Seaside, the Lost Hydra, etc.
    Take a look at the board and see what you think of it and my surfing. Watch some of my other videos and let me know which board you think looks best on me. I'd be curious to know.

    I like the fact that you show actual surfing footage while talking, as oppose to showing your face while explaining.(Not that there's anything wrong with your face. Haha.) I find many other videos do that and it defeats the whole purpose of showing how the board rides. I also think it's cool you're attitude is so humble and authentic.

      That is funny. It was my second session when I realized it. The projections feels like a combination of the Seaside and a little bit of the GoFish. Some of my top wraps felt exactly like the GoFish. Somehow I was able to complete them with little to no speed. I wonder how this board will go as a Twin. I noticed that the front fins are placed further back from a normal board. For example, the Neckbeard2's front fins are almost an inch further up.
      Have you tried the Tomo Fins or tried it as a Twin?

    • @jordanbarbieri
      @jordanbarbieri 3 года назад +1

      You should try the performer fronts with reactor rears. I have a similar board to this and have found it to be a good quad setup. You have the drive and speed of the performer fronts but the reactor rears loosens it up a bit and allows more pivot off the tail.

    • @jordanbarbieri
      @jordanbarbieri 3 года назад +1

      @@ThomyeSurfs I have tried all 4 reactors in my wide tail groveler (roberts mutant). I found that having all 4 reactors leads to a real lack of drive in both down the line pumping and carving in mushier waves. Four reactors feels good in more punchy surf, but in those type of waves I probably wouldn’t want to be on a groveler. For me the performer fronts and reactor rears is the perfect balance of drive and pivot, especially if you’re diligent about moving your foot up the board to pump and back on the tail to turn. Then it accentuates the positive characteristics of both fin templates.

    Hey mate great reviews! Have a seaside and am looking for a more performance seaside! Have you had a chance to ride it in more hollow, punchier waves? Have you tried it with the tomo fins? I think it might only be futures though. Love the vids!

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад +1

      I have not had the chance to ride it in bigger better waves although I have seen Tomo ripping it up so I figure it works. All the characteristics of it lends itself to working much better in bigger better waves than the seaside although I'm not sure what the limits are. The tail is rather wide so my guess is, once you get going fast, it might be hard to turn. but maybe the design contradicts that idea.
      At some point, I will definitely try and get it out in steeper waves. But generally speaking, I think it would do really good at a place like Trestles and a good scale is probably it can handle big and performance slope but as it gets steeper for barrels and such, probably need to pull back on the size of the wave.
      All in all though, it is a great performance option to the Seaside. Unless Rob decides to release a narrower seaside. I just rode my buddies 5'7 which is huge for me but at the length, if it were only 19.5" wide, I'd probably make it my new daily driver.

    Just bought this board in a 5’7 used locally because of this video! I also have a lost mayhem rocket redux in a 5’10. I surf every day no matter the conditions, I am 5’8 and 115 I am wondering what board I should take out (ETF or redux) on the smaller days which can be like 1-2 foot waves. I am trying to progress my turns and overall consistency.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  2 года назад

      they are both similar boards in that they are grovelers. if catching waves becomes an issue on these smaller days, go with the bigger board. which ever gets you on more waves. more waves = fastest progression. if catching waves aren't an issue on either, then go with the smaller board. Likely you can throw it around better. I was just looking to get the redux too. it's a good looking board.

  • @drusmith6463

    Hey there Thomye, would you reckon this 1 to be more on the higher end of the grovs, vs the Modern2 more on the lower end of the HP shortboard, more like daily driver? even with all the volume, your surfing looks super flowy and performant! well done!

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад +3

      it's hard to compare the two from my perspective. Rather, if I were a surf coach, I would put an intermediate surfer coming off a big groveler who wanted a little more performance and wanted to scale a bit on wave size on the El Tomo Fish. Reason being, you have some play for performance but still have this major stability which is huge. The Modern2 is a great board but if you don't' already have the ability to track a proper bottom turn, I can see how it might feel too squirrely. Often, intermediate guys get that confused with responsive and loose, it is a good feeling at times but it slows progressions if you get the board too small.
      Comparing the two boards at the exact same height, 5'6", I would say that the M2 paddles and gets into waves a tad better. First it has a tad more volume and second, it is a tad wider making it plane faster. However, once up, the M2 feels looser because of the narrow tail and the 2 +1 setup. This board isn't set up as a thruster, it is truly a dedicated 2 +1. Fins are clustered closer together and the front fins are a smidge further back. this board is a better groveler for an advanced surfer.
      The ETF on the other hand is probably a way better groveler for an intermediate surfer wanting to progress. This is assuming they are getting both boards bigger since they are still progressing. The board is way more stable and is actually faster by design in terms of drag. Pumping and generating your own speed is also a plus on this board.
      Hope this helps.

Not sure why people feel the need to do that, some sort of pressure test. very odd. I got such a good deal figured it was worth it. It was in the same liters as my Seaside so I thought it was good to go but I have figured out that Tomo boards ride and feel bigger than the liters they are marked. Something about the. I reviewed the 5’6 which felt was a bit big for me. I’m 5’8 and 140 to 145. I think it would’ve been better at 5’4 or 5’5 for me. A 5’7 seems a bit small in my opinion for your height and weight but that all depends on what you’re used to riding. Having said that, lately even though I’ve been putting on weight my fitness is getting better and yet I feel all my boards are too big for me. So just take everything into consideration. Your fitness as well as what you are used to. It is also Apoxsee so it won’t float a little better than some P use at the same volume.

    Great review, surfing, and detail here! Board looks super planted under you feet. Wondering if you could add your opinion on sizing... I am a taller guy 6'2-3'' and I am currently riding a 5'8'' seaside (magic board). I was looking at the EL Tomo as a nice compliment for a bit tighter turns and handling in a bit bigger surf.
    So the question would be -- do you recommend sizing this board up a bit (1 to 1.5) liters above normal range or riding within the range, all things held equal. I am torn between a 5'10'' and 5'11'' option!

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Год назад

      I need to make a few points regarding my own sizing and then we can look at your sizing. I'm on 5'3 Seaside but I should technically be on a 5'2. I'm just lazy and like the extra float. I also like being able to rider slightly smaller waves with it since my break isn't always that great. Having said that, my 5'3 is 28.2L and my ETF is 5'6 28.8L. So in my case, my ETF is sized up a tad but I did feel it was a tag big for me. If I did it again, I would have bought the smaller 5'5 they had on hand.
      Since my reasoning for riding my seaside at 28.2L is to be able to surf "smaller" weaker waves. The ETF being for bigger better, logically it makes sense to get it in less liters. Going back to what I should have been riding, I think I should have been on the 5'2 Seaside at 26.5L and possibly the 5'4 ETF at 25.8L.
      So now getting to you, the 5'8 35.4L. in bigger waves, the wave itself will help you get into waves easier so I'd say error on the smaller side with the 5'10. That is my 2 cents. Having said that though, the only question is does your Seaside ever feel small. if it does, then maybe the 5'11. Unless you get to try them it is hard to say. but from the 2 Tomo boards I have tried, maybe because of design, they felt bigger than they actually were.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Год назад

      for me it was about head high. once it gets around there, the board gets too much speed for the wide tail. it becomes harder to set the rail and really sink the tail. I'm certain a more skilled surfer could push it a foot or two overhead. But for me, it was head high and punchy. if the waver is soft and slow, it could go a tad bigger.

      My 5'3 Glazer was very squirrely while the ETF was very locked in. That could have been the fins but I can't imagine fins changing it too much more. When I rode the Glazer, there was some getting used to and I did try a bunch of different fins. Whereas, when I surfed the ETF, it was very predictable, familiar to me, and drivey. The has less drive, way more pivot.

    I’m currently looking for a fun fish that has some range. In your opinion if you could have only one, which would it be the seaside or the el tomo? I am thinking to get an el tomo rather than a seaside. Just because the wideness of the seaside makes me think it would be a boat! Any advice? 🙏

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Год назад

      the width could be bad on the seaside if you surf it too big. I surf mine at 28 and although wide, it works as intended. But I do know having surfed bigger versions that the width is unfriendly as I surf it bigger. If you are going to oversize them, the El Tomo would be better to oversize because the width is much narrower relative to the seaside but keep in mind that it would be much longer. So depending on your wave, wider shorter boards are better for smaller weaker waves. Longer narrower are better for better shaped or bigger waves. Both are dedicated quads so they are even there. Hope that helps a little

      Thanks so much for reply. I have a 5.10 Cymatic so thinking that will handle better waves. I was looking for the groveler every day board 1-4ft range and was curious about getting a 5.11 tomo rather than 5.9 seaside. As I love Tomo designs and have had two evo plus a vadar. But often hearing things like the el tomo has alot of grip, made for a nicer wave etc. Tough one as don’t like it when a board gets so wide as seaside does. But got to try it I think ;) Thanks again!!

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Год назад +1

      @@ajachild I think it will grovel fine. And although it board can get tight, it is easy enough to loosen up with some proper pivot fins. Even a quad set with and size smaller rear fins. Having had so many other Tomo boards, i think the transition will at least familiar. Good luck and let me know what you end up on and how it goes.
      one last point though, i would not size them equally in liters. Meaning, if you are looking at the 5'11" ET which is 37L roughly. Don't look a the 5'9 SS at 37/. You should consider the 5'8 at the biggest since the board is shorter and most of the volume is concentrated around the chest. Also the 1.5" of extra width makes catching waves super easier than a 5'11 ET. not by much but fractional based on planing principles.
      so in a nutshell, compare the 5'8 SS to the 5'11 ET. and if you consider the extra buoyancy of the helium compared to the LFT, which is probably about 2 to 3 percent, those two boards are more equal than the 5'9 to 5'11. I hope that made sense. :)

    Did the 28.8 liters feel big to you at all? I'm about 155 and usually ride about 26 liters, but I'm not used to seeing my volume being the very smallest selection on Firewire's shortboards. Plus, 5'4" feels pretty short at 5'9". I'm stuck on adding a liter, and the Firewire guys can't help; they say whatever to sell a board. haha.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  2 года назад

      Short answer yes. It felt big but it was actually a good thing for me. I was coming off a 5'3 Seaside which was 28.2L. I wanted the same grovel power but with a tad more performance and drawn out turns. So this board was perfect. Even though the volume was similar, just being 3" longer with more parallel rails made the board feel big however it was the best back hand board I have surfed. It improved my backside turns.
      In your case, is your 26L a performance board or do you consider it a groveler. If it is a performance board, the ET might be a good groveler for you when waves get weak and soft. If your 26L is a groveler, then this might be too many liters. I don't use volume as my reference anymore, it is a good starting point for sure but I have to factor in several other point like "what is the purpose". If I wanted a performance board right now, I would go buy the Sharpeye Inferno 72 at 5'8 maybe even a 5'7. but it wouldn't' work in 80% of the waves i surf. so I would have to rack it till it got good or I surfed a different beach.
      Everything I buy is around 27 to 31 liters because of grovel. The wider it is, the less liters i go, since the board will tend to plane better. The narrower, the more volume I could use without it effecting performance. Anyways, like I said, short answer is yes. it felt big but I'm also 5.8 and only 140lbs. 145 at the end of the day but I surf in the morning. LOL

    great review! How would you compare to the mashup? Which one would you choose to pair with a seaside?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Год назад

      Very different. the tail of the ETF is wide so it is very stable. and it was my favorite board for backhand. something about quads and wide tails makes it more stable for me. it is definitely more user friendly. Surfing it felt like it locked in and it had no surprises. the mashup is more skittish. so it depends on the type of surfing you are looking to do. you definitely get more performance out of the Mashup. Having said that, IMPORTANT, it depends on what size you are riding them. if you oversize them, they are likely equivalent. if you are surfing them small and closer to ones performance range, then the Mashup for sure.
      For me, since I'm trying to pull an air reverse (going terribly by the way), I like the mashup. The board just pops. If I were to want to work on my backhand turns, I would pick the ETF. Hope that all makes sense.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  2 года назад

      I personally found the ETF to be a great step-up to the Seaside. The ETF literally looks like a stretched out narrowed version of the Seaside. with the longer rail line and more parallel rails, you get a bit more drive and stability, bascially control when waves get bigger or steeper. but the performance gains relatively speaking isn't massive.
      The D2 is more of a step-up in the traditional sense of the word. but it is wider than the ETF relatively speaking and it is a completely different tail and concept. I found the ETF to be more familiar and the D2 to feel way different. Not that different is bad but going back and forth, it required adjustment. The seaside and the ETF was easier to transition back and forth.
      Hope that helps.

      completely different boards so I can't really compare them. The TB is a super groveler, great for small and/or soft waves. The El Tomo is still a groveler but can handle bigger steeper waves. Ideally, great in small steep waves or bigger soft waves. Not sure how it would go in big and steep.
      your break would dictate which board but it is nice to have both. That is a good 2 board combo if you ask me.

      it definitely looks like siblings. The V4 was more of a regulars surfboard with the double diamond tail. The El Tomo Fish is built more like a fish, closer to parallel outlines, fuller, but the same tail. Not sure about the bottom, I forget what the bottom looked like on the V4.

    Hey thank you for the review! Really nice to see videos with more realistic surf for the conditions that im going to be surfing haha. Could you help me decide which board would be the best for me? Im at the level where im starting to learn top turns and I usually do not surf in the best conditions and up to head high (sometimes a little bit bigger, but usually smaller). I can buy a Firewire El Tomo or a Lost Puddle Jumper Fish for around the same price. The Seaside is a lot more expensive (but it looks so nice). Or is it better to save my money and first learn on a Torq tec hybrid or a Torq Pod Mod Fish? (Im 124 lbs and 5'3 so I was thinking to go for around 30L) Would really appreciate your help!

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад

      I don't have any experience with the PJF but it looks good. The Firewires are more durable so sometimes worth the extra spend. I complain a bit about price but reality is, value means more. Having said that, are all these boards new? I have never surfed a torq but I have surfed a pod mod2 and that board works well with the right fins. The seaside to me feels a tad more responsive than the podmod shape. But I don't want to push you in that direction. the torq TEC is a good value too. Boards will last a long time.

    • @setht5405
      @setht5405 3 года назад

      @@ThomyeSurfs Yes they are all new and the el tomo is 200euros more than the torq pod mod. Im more curious which board would be better for my progression and with which one ill catch the most waves. Do you think the Torq tec or pod mod are better for beginner/intermediate surfers or is the el tomo better?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад +1

      @@setht5405 probably the torq. Wider and/or longer is better for beginners. The El Tomo as I mentioned in the video is super stable. But that might translate to stiff especially if you don't surf off the tail. Out of all those boards, I would put seaside first. Podmod2 next, than the rest. At the end of that, the best board is the one that gets you on more waves early. Early means you can set up for feet properly to turn off the tail.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад +1

      always hard questions to answer as they are not the same boards meant for the same waves. if it is sub 3' and soft, seaside. if it is 2 to 4 and punchy, ETF. both can surf in either conditions but as a matter of preference, they are more fun in the conditions I mentioned.

      @@ThomyeSurfs yeah I'm trying to find a solution that involves a remote camera. Can't rely on others to film and a pro is too costly. Please can you compare it to the Modern 2? I am confused which one should i buy 🤔 need something for barrel waves in wave pool but also work good in sea

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  2 года назад

      I do like the El Tomo but I have not touched it since the review. I mainly ride my Modern2. I seem to pull of more maneuvers and it has drive so it gets me to places on the wave some of my other board can't. I can't really speak to either regarding a wave pool. When I surfed BSR, I rode my firewire Chubby Chedda which I hate in the ocean but worked best in the pool compared to my spitfire. I think my seaside would have been better but hard to say. At any rate, I like the El Tomo but love love love my Modern 2. I am frothing to try the Modern2.5 with the rounded pin. it looks like it would go well in bigger waves.

    Hi @Thomye how much do you think it can be overvolumed? i have a 5'5 cymatic with 28.4 liters that works well but was thinking of an ELT fish at 5'8, which may be significant more volume but how good can it work on weaker to medium waves, would the wide tail could be a hinder?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  2 года назад

      in smaller waves, the wider tail is helpful. but going too much in volume might be a negative if you are trying to maintain the same amount of performance. not only is it more volume which means it will be bulky and wider, it will also be longer and the swing weight will increase.
      if you are looking for improvement in grovel, then maybe compromise with a 5'7 instead. Having said all this, i have never surfed a proper cymatic. I did try a buddies which was too long for me. felt like the rocker was wrong at that length for my height.

    • @jagsanz
      @jagsanz 2 года назад +1

      @@ThomyeSurfs thanks for your response, the 5'5 cymatic feels good for my level and weight, i could have gone one size smaller but at 49 i start to prefer some more paddle help so that's why i was also considering the longer rail line of the el tomo. I had a 5'8 Xanadu gipos which was pretty wide like 20.7 but very thin in the rails and worked great

      Hi @Thomye surfs , what would you recommend more, i have a chance of a 5'8 modern 2.5 with round tail at 30.9 ltr or an el tomo 5'8 at 31.9ltr. i haven't seen any reviews about modern 2.5

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  2 года назад

      @@jagsanz The El Tomo is narrower than the relative M2.5 but has a wider tail. I think the M2.5 will go better in steeper bigger waves in the pocket while the El Tomo might do better on an open face. I have the 5'6 El Tomo and the 5'6 M2. on my back hand, I like the El Tomo, not sure why, maybe cuz it's a quad. But I like the m2 in bigger punchier waves. I have tested it all conditions so I feel more sure footed on it. The ETF might feel bigger than it is, it does to me. I think the best question to ask is what are your waves like. if it is small to medium and softer, maybe the ETF cuz of the wider tail and ability to push/drive. the rounded pin pulled in tail of the M2.5 is better in the pocket and steeper punchier waves. I love both my boards almost equally, I just like the ETF backhand better and the M2 frontside. but feel my m2 can handle better waves.

      @@ThomyeSurfs thanks for giving so great feedback!, the waves I surf usually are small to medium, mostly softer but sometimes can get punchier, not very steep though, however the el tomo at 5'8 that i have available has more volume than the M2.5. If the M2.5 can still work well in softer waves then maybe is a better bet for wider range perhaps?

    Hi Thomye, your reviews are awesome, great content, the Modern 2 is the board you surf best, it sticks out a mile. Grovels and rides head plus, With its own generated projection of speed. I ride a CI 6’3 rocket wide 42lt and all the tail has busted up from the rail saver. Love the board though ( heavy strong beach break in Sydney Australia) 57 yrs old 80kg, I was thinking of getting the M2 6’4 at 42.3 ltr. What do you think? I just want one board. In Australia sharpeye are not using surftech anymore. Looks the same but EPS built in Australia custom made. Do you still think M2 is better than seaside and your board of choice ? Keep up the good work. Not sure how all that V can produce so much projection either. Which is evident in your videos. Steve

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 года назад

      they seem very similar, the Rocket Wide and M2 in terms of general dims and volume:
      RW 6’3 21 1/4 2 7/8 41.8L
      M2 6' 4" 21.00 2.90 42.3L
      The outlines are similar at that height with the subtle difference in the tail. M2 has the step/wing to help with the Twin fins.
      The major different will be the bottom. The M2 is a V throughout. And I venture to think that the M2 will be flatter in terms of rocker. Personally, I think you should try it but make sure that those two things work for you and your waves. One thing I don't know is how the RW surfs. I don't think I have surfed it. But based on the outline, it looks like a decent board. I realized that most boards that I like are generally flatter. Easy entry, easy exit with a staged center (flatter). curved boards feel strange to me but could be a matter of getting used to it.
      The last bit if different will be the fin cluster. Since the M2 was designed to be a 2 +1, the fins are grouped a tad bit tighter, back fin isn't as far away from front fins. What this means if that if you put the exact same thruster set in, it will feel looser. Having said that, I would go 2 +1 anyways which will make it even looser on release but drivey with bigger front fins.
      Sorry I can't help much more. Hopefully some day I can surf the RW to know for sure.
