That fall they really enjoyed their breakthrough secretly, had fun playing, they were hell of a live band, each song spot on, but then also they over-toured, look at their live-show-calender that year, continuing into next jan/feb, and look at HOW long of a live set they played with that intensity in their music, especially kurt and his voice. it was not only extremely hard work, it harmed kurts voice and most important, how do those songs feel if you play them 200 nights in a row? you must feel sick after a while. and it was completely unnecessary sales-wise. the mtv video did the job pretty well, teen spirit completely sold out. they would have been huge anyway, with a much smaller tour and shorter concerts. which Punk/hardcore band plays a 1,5 hours show? not today and not even then. cause punk/hardcore that's what it is from the intensity. nirvana were certainly more intense than any rock/metal show vocal-wise, and probably the most intense band that ever existed in any genre, no matter how raw/hard other genres may sound, growls are kinda fake anyway. so of course live shows build a strong connection with a bands fan base, and nirvana were very close and real for their listeners back then. but i wish for them they would have had time to relax and think about all this, instead of having to react, act, play, deal with the hype around them 24/7, and then having to "proove" every night that they deserve all that god-like-status-attributions. cause thats at least how kurt behaved. he, like many young man had to proove to the poeple around him when he grew up, in the first place, what he can do, and how they underestimated him. so he's already in that trap when he actually becomes famous. having to proove. then also, having to keep up their ethic keeping the setlist they created at the beginning of a tour the same lenght untill the last tour date, thats really an incredible effort, they felt they had to make. of course they enjoyed playing live, and they always played long for their fans, also during the in utero tour, but during in utero they played fewer shows with more comfort around (but even then they toured too much).
I think they played like 70 shows in 91 or 92..either way it's too much. Times have changed. Bands no longer play more than twice a week anymore. Nirvana played sometimes I think 3 shows a week. I'd be over it really quick.
