Regardless of opinion, nu metal was the last time that heavy music was mainstream and reached millions of people. Bands like Korn and Linkin Park were gateway band to heavier music for countless fans.

Hearing Ice T with body count still convey things very real to people to me is great, not only are they keeping the genre alive, but they are doing so while handling heavy topics. I feel like Morello never heard a band other than limp bizkit to say the things he says. SOAD much like RATM sung about politics a lot, and they were a lot bigger in the nu metal circles. limp bizkit was the average joe's understanding of the genre imo

When I was a kid, I uses to be scared of Metal music, like a hell lot. My uncle/godfather is your typical old school metalhead and I was scared of him and what he listened (Krator, Slayer, Metallica, etc), that whenever I was forced to visit him, I would grab his cassette tapes and hide them. As years passed and I was getting more acquainted with music channels (MTV, VH1, among others), I got into bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit, Disturbed and, of course, Linkin Park. However, I never paid close attention to the "Metal" side of things but that of the rapping vocals. To this day, nonetheless, I think this music genre we all know as "Nu Metal" might have deeply (and unconsciously) helped me to overcome the irrational fear I had towards Metal in general. Currently I listen to Prog rock/Metal and jazz and its derivations (particularly jazz fusion), but I'm also open to a wide variety of other metal genres and music styles in general. With that said, I can't hate on Nu Metal at all, and will honestly never understand the hatred it gets. To me, I guess, it is all a matter of attachment and not knowing how to let go that is getting others to hate on it. But what do I know.

I don't see competition from something I'm not interested in to begin with, they certainly are not competing with anything that I would listen to. There also seems to be plenty of room for everyones taste these days with technology, nobody is really " competing" to get a record deal with a label anymore, I record all the instruments myself in my garage with a computer, from drums and guitars to vocals and percussion, no labels, no paying for studio time or engineers. It's a different world for musicians than the one I grew up in (42 years old). Opinions are like smelly buttholes, we all have them and everyone else thinks they stink😋.

I'm composer. And for me it's always confusing to hear from serious musician that nu metal is bad. How it is? Nu metal have the most diverse bands. Even the most popular bands from that genre have absolutely different sound, songwriting, arrangement and ideas.

My theory is a lot of people listen to stuff like Limp Bizkit, Saliva, or Papa Roach first, and then assume Nu Metal is just rap rock with whiney vocalists. Which, I can’t blame them too much for that, but it sucks because it gave bands like SOAD, Slipknot, Deftones, Static-X, Powerman-5000, and so on a bad name just by association.

When Billy Corgan speaks, I listen. The guy writes music from the future CONSTANTLY! Their albums sell kinda iffy but never fail, 5-6 years later it's the new sound. Plus, what he said is true for all music: intermingling of genres almost always creates better music down the road.

In the early 80s i was a kid turning into a tween and i liked rap, but im talking like Kurtis Blow and Flash and the Furious Five and im talking the break dance days and electro funk and stuff like Newcleus up to like Whodini. but by the time NWA and Public Enemy and Ghetto Boys and all that stuff was coming out i hated rap.
luckily i started high school in 86 and i did not realize it then but Thrash Metal was right at its peak and i was completely absorbed in it, i could go on for hours about all the memories and good times me and my friends had during those couple years and the specific albums and bands. but again by like 89 when i was starting my senior year ALL the bands i loved were putting out new albums that were underwhelming me and all the hot new bands were not impressing me. as 90 rolled around and i graduated i started spending my time digging into artists and genres from the past that i had not really known or been exposed to at the time and that what i was in love with all through the 90s while everyone was going gaga over grunge and 90s alt rock, there was simply music from the 50s, 60s, 70, and 80s abd even stuff from like the 40s and 30s i would rather listen to than anything from the 90s. then as the 2000s were rolling around i started hearing Nu Metal and it is like someone literally took the music that made me stop liking rap and the music that made me stop liking metal and combined it. YUCK, to this day i just do not even pay attention to new music AT ALL thanks to the 90s and to Nu Metal.
