- Chasing a Catch head out fishing in Northland, Aotearoa New Zealand to fish with softbaits. This area of Northland holds a lot of snapper, gurnard, trevally, kahawai and king fish. I catch lots of snapper on softbaits and a porae. Great day out softbaiting.

Pound for pound I reckon Porae fight harder than snapper, they seem to take softbaits quite readily and have caught a fair few of them around the Cavalli's and the Bay of Islands. We got one just shy of 10lb, what a scrap. They are also fine eating.

Hi Thomas, we are really enjoying your fishing vids.
Just watched your latest one and couldn’t help but notice how many fish you dropped after hooking up.
Can I suggest you have a look at your hook tips and make sure they are sharp. Some of the soft bait hooks I have had in the past haven’t had the best edge on them. It takes about 20 seconds to touch them up. I check mine after each hook up.
Keep doing what you are doing.
I miss fishing back home and watch Kiwi uploads as often as I can.
Hi Annette. Thanks so much for watching. I'm really glad you're enjoying the videos. Where are you living now? Good idea re sharpening. It's something I've thought about but never done. Do you just carry a small file? This was a brand new jig head for most of this video so should have been ok. Lots of the takes were very soft and tentative also so the fish weren't biting hard that morning. Thanks again for watching and for the tip. Cheers, Thomas
what jig heads do you primarily use? if using the ones with thick guage hooks with large barb, like the ocean angler lightbulb etc 'hooking up' then dropping the fish is common when using soft rod/light gear as the hooks don't penetrate easily enough. It's a trader off between thinner guage hooks which larger fish will bend a bit, but far better staying hooked up rate. the new BKK jigheads are a good trade off
fishing down there still looks easy work to me.

Is that part of New Zealand in a bay setting? I know you spoke about how calm it was but I’ve never seen any part of the Pacific that calm… just curious if you happen to fish in bays with little to know waves?
Hi Jaci! Thanks heaps for watching. Yeah I was in a bit of a bay. The coastline here has lots of little areas you can get away from the swell. Not so much where i was fishing in this video but some areas have islands just off the coast which can offer some shelter from the swell also. Thanks heaps. Thomas
