    As a current long time owner I can tell you there is incredible support from the owner community. DO NOT try and start it until you have gone through the ENTIRE fuel system. The painted cars generally had body damage. There are 3 Gold cars, two as part of an AMEX promotion and the third assembled from the spare gold panels. Unfortunately if you paid 33K for it, you are not going to be happy with the final cost.

    Little trick for backing up trailers.
    Put your hands on the bottom of the steering wheel. Then if you want the trailer to go left, you move your hands left like usual. Takes the reversing direction out of it.
    Sick project. I'm thankful you share it with everyone.

    • @pkt1213
      @pkt1213 Год назад +7

      I always taught people, when trying to back straight, if you see more trailer in one mirror more than the other, turn the wheel in that direction a bit.

    • @chrisbartlett6022
      @chrisbartlett6022 Год назад +5

      @@pkt1213 ditto, you sort of "push" the trailer out of that mirror till you see it in the other and "push" it back. Obviously getting it right is a bit more complicated, unless like my Brother who is dyslexic and just stops thinking about what he is doing and automatically does things back to front. Of course both above suggestions work.

    • @JustinJoyinglife
      @JustinJoyinglife Год назад +3

      I learned that trick on a farm I worked on. It's helpful because it takes the thought process of flipping directions out of it. And can be modified easily. For instance, if you're backing up doubles (two trailers) your hand goes back to the top and the direction you turn is the direction the rear trailer will go. Still takes practice to nail, but it's a cheat code for starting out. And mirrors are super important. Especially for low trailers or trailers you can't see out of the rear. But I didn't mention that because I figured it was a given lol.

    • @chrisbartlett6022
      @chrisbartlett6022 Год назад +1

      @@JustinJoyinglife indeed, horses for courses, some things work better for some than others. I had to be in the zone to reverse doubles, or a trailer with a drawbar axle. I had a Land Rover with an off set front tow ball on the bumper, sometimes it was worth the added time to turn the landy round and push the trailer along. Of course wouldn't it be good to be able to hitch the trailer to the rear axle (or rather above it) like with a 5th wheel

    Hey Alex, the best way to back up a trailer is to put a tape on the 6 o'clock of your steering wheel. After that you turn the tape in the direction you need the trailer to go. In effect, it will be the opposite of what you do when you back up your vehicle without a trailer. The tape in the 6 o'clock position is a seamless way to remember. Give it a try!

    • @kevinstorm6009
      @kevinstorm6009 Год назад +10

      When you lifted the louver it hit the stainless T panel on the roof because the underlying roof box structure that is glued to the fiberglass underbody has started to come unglued. You need to re-secure the roof box to the fiberglass with some screws or bolts, and the louver will no longer hit. Common issue and not too difficult to repair, but you need to unload the torsion bars for the doors to do it, which can be tricky if you have never done it. Would highly recommend having DMCMW perform this procedure.

    Alex, on the oil pressure question:
    In January I supercharged my H2, it always had oil pressure similar to yours; Within acceptable spec by GM, but certainly lower than ideal and personally uncomfortable to me. Come so find out it's definitely an LQ4/LQ9 iron block 6.0 characteristic. I also live in Phoenix, so the excessive heat makes it even worse. When doing the blower setup, I pulled the engine for a quick and dirty refresh, and went back together with a Melling high volume pump with the strongest spring. I now cold start at 80psi, hot idle at 50, and hot cruise at about 70. Much happier and much more margin for error. Definitely recommend doing this sooner than later. I also get 8.6mpg highway. LOL

    Tips to backing up a trailer…… rest your right hand on the bottom of the steering wheel. Don’t move your hand from the spot. If you wish the back of the trailer to go to the left, take your hand that is on the steering wheel at the bottom and move it to the left. Vice versa for the right your hand to the right back of the trailer goes to the right.

    At 37:30 - a suggestion for any future issues like that stuck brake - if you get the caliper off like you did, just remove the pads if it won't retract the piston by force. No brake pads, no drag, but also no dripping brake fluid and less overall trouble. 😉

    The PRV is a fairly good engine and typical of a V6 from that era. In Europe the 2.7i was rated at 155bhp, but i guess the US emissions stuff took that down. You can drop in a 3.0 V6 24v PRV from a Peugeot 605. That is the last version of the PRV made in 1997 and was 200bhp.

    When I first got my learners permit, my dad delivered a lot of rv’s, campers, and conversion vans out of the Middlebury, IN area. It was during the return runs where I got my early driving experience in an ‘88 F350 crew cab dually with a 460-V8 and 5spd pulling an empty gooseneck trailer long enough to hold 2 LWB extended F150 conversion vans. It was huge. Here’s my point, he taught me the easiest way to back a trailer, and I assure you it will help you. While backing, you need to do three things: (1) back slowly, don’t rush, (2) hold the steering wheel at the top and watch your mirrors, when trying to straighten up turn towards the mirror in which you see the trailer, (3) and finally, especially when backing a bumper or hitch pulled trailer continue to hold the wheel at the noon position and make small inputs/corrections. Usually 90* is enough, you may need to turn nearly 180*, however the trailer will come about very quickly, even if you are just crawling. If you keep ahold of the wheel at the top position (with the wheels printed straight ahead) you can go 90 or more either way and always find the straight ahead position quickly to move straight back. It sounds a little strange, but go find a large empty parking lot with lines or cones and practice. Try what I’ve said, you’ll be shocked how quickly you’ll improve. As a professional driver with a CDL, I feel I should say this as well…if possible always set yourself up so that you are backing in an arc to your left, or as it’s known ‘sight-side backing.’ Blind-side backing is more difficult and it is much harder to confidently place the right side of your vehicle.

    Hi Alex, If you want to convert it to a manual gearbox look for one out of a Renault Alpine GTA (pronounced "ALPEEN"). Not sure if there is a difference between the gearboxes in the turbo and non turbo models. You should be able to modify the gear selector rod to suit the DMC. First place to look for a box and selector rod would be in the UK, plenty of them being wrecked there. Pedals would be different as the GTA ones come up from the floor like an old VW. I have a Alpine GTA here in Australia, so same PRV engine and Renault box. Looking forward to the build.

    I've been restoring a friend's DeLorean, VIN 1053 and yeah, you're probably going to put $20K-$30K into this to get it sorted. These are some of the most difficult and annoying cars to work on. You should consider just spending the money and upgrading things as you go along, the suspension design by Lotus is absolutely horrendous. KW coilovers are probably worth the premium over the stock shocks as I completely redid the suspension with stock shocks and it rides like crap still. You should definitely upgrade the brakes.

    • @stuartd9741
      @stuartd9741 Год назад +1

      Thanks for the info interesting.
      Why is the suspension horrendous if it was designed by Lotus?
      Unless you mean in the sense everything rusts together...

    • @EdwardM104
      @EdwardM104 Год назад

      @@stuartd9741 it's very similar to the design of the Eclat and the early Esprit. Lotus updated the design in the Esprit but the DeLorean was never updated. A couple of videos that show what's going on with the worst offender, the front suspension:
      watch?v=jiJ4sDiurdI (video called 'DeLorean LCA, FEA Analysis (a work in progress)')
      and
      watch?v=CMHO4Aydk04 (video called 'DeLorean LCA Flex')
      The lower control arms are thin sheet metal and not boxed at all no real reinforcements at all, they love to crack because of the excessive movement. The sway bar is also very soft metal, not a proper spring steel, and doesn't do well to triangulate the movement of the lower control arm.
      The rear suspension also has issues related to the pivot bolt of the trailing arm bending or shearing off. The original bolts were low grade and not well suited to the task, but it was also a poor design. Unlike most high load suspension bolts, the bolt is only located by a bracket on one side, not both, causing significant shear force and bending moment to be applied to the bolt. This is mostly solved with better grade bolts, some people also use Inconel bolts for this and seemingly have zero failures but those bolts are $$$$.
      DeLoreans seem to have more issues with these suspension designs than the Lotus cars but I've seen similar complaints from owners of early Esprits, never seen a Eclat to be honest.

      Thanks for the reply Edward.
      Makes sense now.
      ..
      I've been following
      _soup classic motoring_
      George is restoring a Lotus Esprit.
      Everything he does is meticulous.
      Episodes 65 --> George is repairing the chassis even making jigs for the sheet steel.
      ...
      It's clear watching this restoration how cheap & poorly made the Lotus was.
      And Chapman's ethos of lightness clearly shows on the chassis construction.
      No internal gussets in the central spine..??
      ...
      In episode 73 he rebuilds/repairs the spring turrets,
      ..
      And the last Lotus episode (19/19)
      [2nd to last video]
      he's making the rear trailing arms out of stainless steel..from scratch.
      Which is an odd choice as SS work hardens become brittle..
      Worth a look.
      Also his videos are stop gap animation videos.
      Phenomal.

    Amazing find. You are a lucky man. I’m an ex truck driver, so let me give you a tip on trailering. It’ll help. Put you hand on the bottom of your steering wheel. Whichever way you want your trailer to go, move your hand ( and the bottom of the wheel) in that direction. And you need surprisingly little movement, and want to ‘float’ the trailer - little movements on the wheel and just let the trailer float in the right direction. Big movements will get you all catty wampus. Can’t wait to see more of your incredible journey with this car. Good luck. 👍

John Z had convinced the suppliers that they were going to sell hundreds of thousands in the first year so they all had geared up and make LOTS of parts....only to then be warehoused when the enterprise went bankrupt. I worked on a couple of them and pretty much every single part was available except for the trim pad on the dash...they were gone, but engines, transmissions, upgraded fuse panels w/wiring....you name it and you can get it.

For your 6L, 15 PSI is well within specification(8 PSI is the minimum I believe) but I would suspect you have some bearing wear or seal leaks. Old oil can also drop your PSI quite a bit, so if you are due for an oil change definitely perform that before inspecting your bearings.
