I'm a 1993 baby, grew up in the south west side of Sydney. I now live in a remote part of Tasmania. I had a huge phone addiction, I would be on my mobile all day and every day. I found my memory and focus perished quite significantly. My depression and anxiety rose and I couldn't enjoy the things I wanted to enjoy (such as games, books, movies, creating, art, cars, friends and various other events). Technology is great but it has a deep cost, they're finding devolution in humans for the first time. We are taking a step back which is crazy in the scientific world. So how do we beat the addiction? Well personally I feel it's not just social media that's the issue but in general smart phone usage and youtube too. It's having a device or focus point in front of you that you don't get breaks from. Peripheral vision and external awareness diminishes as well. You sir are on the right path to a longer, more fulfilled life where your days actually become longer by hours, not only that, your memory and focus improves dramatically therefore your life will feel a lot longer like it did when we were children. @Matias Rijo so in all honesty I'm still on my phone, I need to shake the addiction. Yesterday I went until 7pm without it and then from 7pm to 10pm I binged youtube on it. Today has been no different, I woke up with it between 8 and 9 and then when I got home from the doctor at 1:30 I've been on it for the last 2 hours. I feel this addiction deeply, but I'm trying my best. I have been watching your videos and other minimalist videos to continue my inspiration and drive on my path (3 years into the journey myself atm) I find it amazing and beneficial. However it's a journey always reassessing things and letting things back in that I soon regret. I do a declutter every 3 months.
@@nathanglynn7443 i understand your frustration. Take it step by step, you did a great job yesterday! Perhaps restrict your usage to 1-2 hours a day, and then next week to 30min -1:30 hours, and in 1 month you could easily stop using it! Take it step by step
@Matias Rijo thank you, yesterday I managed to stay off it majority of the day too, limiting the use as you said. I am slowly starting to fill my day with other hobbies etc, going back to childhood games on my ps1 and reading a lot of books lately is helping me down that no phone path

Hi im a 14 year old girl and this video made me realize that I could waste so much of my time on it, thanks for making this video I’ve been trying to quit Instagram for maybe like 3 months now buts it’s so hard to do😢
Nothing is too hard, only you make it hard. Distract yourself with other things, go out there, do sports, run, take pictures, just try to make more interesting for you to do something else than to grab your phone!
I’ve thinking of quitting social media and focus on something important rather than spangling time Instagram or Facebook. I feel it’s a waste of time. It’s good that I found your video to inspire me more and quit right away. Like you said , you’d rather be a creator than consumer’. 👍
I hope you stay away from social media. I left them a year ago, and it was the best decision. I loved what you said about growing a business without social media, I can only imagine how enslaving would be to have to manage multiple platforms and be active all the time. I've been thinking about starting a business for a while, but I was holding back because I don't want to return to social media, and lose myself again. You've motivated me to follow my ideas anyway, and I thank you for that. I wish you luck with your channel too, and many more subscribers 🌱🥰
It’s definitely difficult to grow an online business without online presence. But for example, a clothing brand, millions have done it before without social media. It can be done! If you definitely need social media to grow a business, restrict yourself, use it only to post and reply, don’t follow anyone. At least those are the conditions I set on myself! You got this!!
It’s amazing how many videos I’ve found with people like me who was overwhelmed with these social sites! I’m thriving I have so much time to do other things I get up early go to the park and walk for 30 mins to an hour I feel so good afterwards I might leave it alone for good!!!
I’m off social media, I’m 40, I liked life before the net. People were more loving, real, kind and life was more exciting. It’s too shallow and superficial now. I don’t roll like that.
Fellow Gen-Z here. Went on a break from Twitter for over a month now to focus on academics and decided to delete TikTok, Instagram and Snapchat (which I barely used) altogether recently. I have to say, nothing in my life really changed after that. I woke up and did my everyday routine as per usual, but it was slightly different in that, I felt more at peace and slightly more optimistic? (Maybe because I decided to sleep earlier now, lol) But I feel really confident knowing I’m not alone and people like you inspired me to make this decision in the first place. I want to start actually living now. Thank you for this video, and I’m proud of you for making it this far in your journey. I hope to achieve something of this scale too. :-)
Thank you, glad you aprpeciate it. It indeed seems like we have more time now, life just goes on you want it or not. Right now I am 1 year and a half into this journey, and even tho I have my life up and downs... life never felt better!

Thank you so much brother! I quit Twitter and IG this past February, youtube has been my last addiction. I've already been making strides towards quitting youtube but your video gave me the motivation I finally needed. It's like you said, just try 1 week, 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 4 weeks, I'll see how beautiful it is after that. Regardless of me quitting youtube I subscribed to help your numbers. Much love brother!
Thank you for the support bro! Take it one step at a time, start with the christmas no social media, then keep on going, when you realize, you won't be missing it anymore!
I feel like an outcast tbh. Ive never had snapchat, tiktok, instagram and i got rid of facebook along time ago. I do have whatsapp but when i see people using other social medias such as Snapchat it does kind of make me feel like im alone in a way. I don't have many friends. Im born 1997, so im part of the gen-z generation.
I don't have many friends either, but I do feel like those friends I have I can count on them for anything. You are not an outcast, and if you are, feel proud to be, because when in 10 years from now they are not happy, you will. Put yourself above anything else!

Mhm, that's interesting. I do understand your struggle... can you not talk with them at school? Or perhaps on whatsapp, messenger or whatever text message app you use? I do understand that it may be difficult, but don't let that stop you if it's what you truly want!
Hi Matias! Thank you for sharing this personal and heartfelt video. You did a great job with the edit, and the narration and choice of aspect ratio. Sometimes I feel like I’m surrounded by people whose lives revolve around social media. I’m happy to see that more people in the world like yourself and many others in the comment share the thoughts in this video. I will look forward to what you create!
The triggering event for me was when I realised that, whilst I could be engaging in interesting conversations with a guy from India, Bolivia, Tanzania or whatever, I was just scrolling and frying my brain with stupid useless publications, bad memes and pointless debates. As you say, the purpose of social media was never achieved. It all went down the drain because money was to be made by stealing our attention and brainpower
When I reduced social media time (I didn't quit tho) my retention span greatly increased. You mention increased productivity which may also be a result from a better retention span?
@@ME-ot2ce Def an interesting year to be born! We might have a few year differences, but you lived through the good olden times when gameboy came out and the internet came out! I'm one of the last generations to experience that transition!
What about this thing: I have Instagram, RUclips, two massagers and Facebook. But I use Facebook only for listening to music, nobody don’t write me messages in FB, very rarely. I don’t scroll news or spend a lot of time to read something in any groups. The same situation with messages where I only answer on messages when someone is texting to me. Should I delete these apps or no? Can I say that I have ‘freedom’, because don’t waste my time at these apps? But, RUclips my main… enemy. And good support. A love learn languages (and with English same situation, sorry for idiots mistakes. I don’t use google translator, want to write this text only by myself) and thanks to RUclips can watch videos which help me. In other side I waste my time when I start watch t-series, films or just videos.. hour by hour. And it’s very bad. Should I quit from FB and massagers and RUclips? Or how to be? Honestly, only RUclips ‘take’ my time. But it helps me a little bit practice my language skills and watch videos to be better in something else.
I personally think that it's about how you use social media, not persee about the time you spent on it. I use a lot of youtube for example to listen to music. It's really about the way you consume, if you are aware of it, and do your best not to just mindlessly scroll, then you got this! If youtube helps with improving your english, then keep on watching, maybe just rescrict your time to 1 hour, and not just mindlessly scroll 2 hours on shorts, but watch long videos!
i love this video so much. do you have any advice for someone like me who wants to still create content on youtube and wants to also quit well-established social medias? i’ve taken several social media breaks and they’ve been the greatest. 🥺
I believe it's more in the mentality, you should just not be in the game for the numbers, and the money. But rather, for the sake of content creation. Once you make that switch, being of social media is easy. Find distractions, and you will thrive
@@MatiasRijoM i took a little trip this past weekend and decided to disconnect while being there. it was the best decision. i even found i love reading a lot and it gave me the inspiration to share this with others on a future youtube channel.
It's interesting how many people are quitting social networks, but they show up on RUclips and talk about quitting Facebook, insta, etc...but youtube is also a social network. it's just a comedy...
Great! But why did you come back, and what means are you using to share this video with the world? I guess you had both sides of experience, and that includes you discovered yourself and also missed the social interaction. Absence from social media can't bring happiness or unhappiness. It all depends on how you use it.
Hey, I actually didn't come back. I don't consider RUclips as a social media. I know it is, and yes you can comment, watch and waste your time, just like in other platforms. But youtube can be more of a "netflix" for home made movies. Where you can share your journey in an educational way, or even your opinion. It lacks messaging options too. Socialmedia is toxic, but it is also wonderful. I met my future wife on instagram, so I owe my love to the platform. As you say, it all depends in how you use it.
I did actually! To be honest the first month is the most difficult, then it just becomes easier, and you start finding other ways to use your time. First few months is more exciting, then it just settles down and is not as cool anymore!
Good decision social media is like you are in prison I m already freed myself from social media I deleted all those apps now I am enjoying my freedom from social media 😁
Agree, yet I am here to spread a message, educate. Not here as a consumer. Although I do have my go to youtubers that I watch their videos, I just avoid the spammy kind, and shorts.
@@MatiasRijoM that’s great stuff, but there’s too many videos of people saying they’ve quit social media but still on RUclips. Too much echo chamber type of videos. You’re all saying the same things. We know social media is rotting us.
@@MatiasRijoM there’s too much self help stuff on RUclips already. It’s got to the point where everyone is stealing everyone’s words. I can’t think of any other topics to talk about because it seems like it’s already been done. Sorry man.
@@CT-pv9gu i see your point, I do think that everyone's voice is different, and everyone has a different approach to it. I could say the same about restaurants, jobs, businesses, yet every day there is a new one opening up, offering the same stuff, but still different. It's about giving it your own twist to it
RUclips is one of the largest social media platforms in the world, just so you know. So you haven't quit social media, just gotten rid of certain platforms. Let's be honest at least.
Hey, the message goes more around not being a consumer, but a creator. I use youtube as a creative platform, I don't sit around hours scrolling on my phone watching to strangers' life. But you got a fair point.
This is not true. RUclips is not social media and does not make you depressive. It is not time consuming rather you can learn a lot of things and grow yourself.

1986 lol 1886.. good video@@MatiasRijoM
@@MatiasRijoM thanks a lot for answer :) I have subscribed to you, thank you for your content. Trying to watch your videos without subtitles 😂
its so good :) go on bro
Thanks 🔥
Today is my first day of stop scrolling and tiktok and Reels I have spent too long on wasting my life on those
First day of the rest of your life!
Snapchat makes me feel awful. Feeling like i have to use a filter because i look bad without one. It's obsessive
I never really understood snapchat, it used to be fun a few years ago before haha
this is the first day in 2024 , and the first thing I did is that deleted social mediaa , I m proud of this decision ❤❤
I'm prou!
Take me back to the 90s.💯🙃
Good times huh?
@@MatiasRijoM Yes
i love this video so much. do you have any advice for someone like me who wants to still create content on youtube and wants to also quit well-established social medias? i’ve taken several social media breaks and they’ve been the greatest.
Isn’t RUclips also social media 🤔it’s equally or probably more addictive then all social media’s combined I would say
True, but it also depends how you use it!
It's interesting how many people are quitting social networks, but they show up on RUclips and talk about quitting Facebook, insta, etc...but youtube is also a social network. it's just a comedy...
You clearly didn’t get the message around quitting social media. But oh well..
Have you experienced some differences between like after the first 2 months and after 7 months of quitting?
I did actually! To be honest the first month is the most difficult, then it just becomes easier, and you start finding other ways to use your time. First few months is more exciting, then it just settles down and is not as cool anymore!
oh no.... i have to delete my youtube too 🥺
you shouldn't! keep playing the violin and uploading it online. You will be doing great!
But hes on you tube
Yes, I am
sos argentino?
No, uruguay
Good decision social media is like you are in prison I m already freed myself from social media I deleted all those apps now I am enjoying my freedom from social media 😁
I’m glad you escaped!
@@MatiasRijoM thanks ☺️
Try getting off RUclips too dude. RUclips is also social media
@@CT-pv9gu I get your point... is there anything different you'd like to see by any chance?
Depends on how you use it. @@sumisum2813
RUclips is not classified as social media but as an entertainment platform. It’s more comparable to Tv than to Facebook. Let’s be honest at least😒
You cant be creator in nowadays İG. So it better to not return.
Don't think I will! Life is so much better, close to the 1 year mark now! Will make a video soon!
@@MatiasRijoM nice, i deleted all my SM accs 2 weeks ago, so only started my journey)
@@TomTom-bh2wf I'll do it for the last weekend of July since that's literally 1 year mark!
