The most accomplished jazz ensemble to date. Sure Spyro Gyro is too but the Yellow jackets have continued to cultivate their sound and personnel. I've been a fan since about 1987-88 and still attend their concerts when I can. I have a screen saver of William Kennedy and myself on my cell phone as I'm thoroughly convinced that he's the greatest jazz drummer alive today. Long live the Yellow jackets
It took me FOREVER since 8th grade to figure out the chords to this tune and I finally figured it out my senior year of college...I've loved this song since I first heard it at the age of 12
I love the space that Jimmy is leaving here for the audience to hear the other player's' contributions to the song. He is unselfishly sharing his solo spotlight here, to allow the nuance of the groove mechanic to get through to the listener. By not over playing, he actually contributes more to the song than if he had played the million-note thing. Big ups Jimmy H! You da' man!
Will Kennedy is so in the pocket on this, his drummng is so foundatinal, yet it has a flowing quality that moves you into the direction of the song. Very few have this gift. Thanks for this post!
I like the way the "Jackets" keep their music true to the ears of their listening audience. I have a difficult time of accepting a perfrormance that is so different from the original, that it can hardly be understood!
thanks so much for posting my all-time fave yellowjackets tune! kennedy sure knows how to lock down a great groove, i love the mintzer and haslip solos, and ferrante is my piano hero. Such talent...
I agree with all of the positive comments regarding the Yellowjackets. When the right mix of musicians connect, you get a unique display of talent and creativity where the end product is "Great" music. This is the same thing that happened with Jaco Pastorius, Peter Erskine, Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter: forming Weather Report.
To put no one down, Jimy's bass was the sh*t for this group! I miss his smoothness and his energetic use of notes and space to allow the rest of the music to have its identity as well as his bass'.
Dane Alderson is an amazing bassist and wonderful addition to the band. I will always have a little bias and fondness for Jimmy Haslip. Listening to him helped me tremendously when I was just learning to play the bass!
I like how The Yellowjackets and Spyro Gyro end their tracks in the same tempo as they begin them. Listen closely the next time u enjoy them. Its like telling someone a story and refreshing the importance of it at the end.
Friendly !
Bob Mintzer? What the hell need I say about his power and his slithery note usage? This group is second to none! I love the sounds of S[yro Gyra, but the Yellowjackets you see here, are the shiznit!
It's a patch with the strings and acoustic together., Also, notice when the bass solo is going on and it cuts to Russell you can see him playing the bottom bass line on the top keyboard. Just awesome. Makes me want to just throw my keyboard out the window. haha.
Amo esse Tema. me influenciou muito!!! Very good.
It's a Tobias Classic bass, originally made by Michael Tobias. He later sold the company to Gibson, who now make them. Michael Tobias still makes basses. His new company is called MTD. Haslip is an endorser.
@bellgrill I'm a little behind but I just found out that Will is back. They are working on a new CD with Will and he is now their drummer again. Not sure what happen but the yellowjackets site wishes Marcus the best so who knows..
Man Will Kennedy is a polyrhythmic time keeping machine! I dont think Ive seen this guy screw up his parts! Jimmy was off on this night! Ive seen him really rip great solos on the fretless.
@bellgrill He didn't vanish, he was playing around with tons of people. He was playing a whole lot with Lee Ritenour, I think with Patrice Rushen's solo tours, and with Chuck Loeb (IIRC.)
@juanbarros88 [Part 2] These things happen sometimes, happened to me too a couple of times - you have a set of notes to play, you start playing and you realize you are late or that you started with a wrong note by accident - and the whole set is gone and you have to try and hang onto whatever is left (and it's usually the last couple of notes ;) )
In my head, I can hear how this song sounds on CD by the Yellow Jackets. There are little nuances that you notice when a group performs live, versus what you hear on a CD. Not taking anything away from Mr. Jimmy H, but I did notice his base solo wasn't anything like I remember hearing on CD. Totally different but nonetheless still great! :)
@juanbarros88 [Part 1] On the album he's playing in unison with the piano. Here he messed up, he missed like five notes (he probably started playing them but heard they were off, and he decided to hang on to the last two ones). I just know he messed up, I'm not a bassist (I played oboe for 10 years) and I played in a trio, a quintet and played 1st oboe in the school orchestra for 4 years, I think.
Ora foi tutti kinare kapoccien e sentire. ja?" JA!
Don't feel sorry for Marcus Baylor, AKA "the new kid on the block" with the YellowJackets. He's holding his own. Trust me. He's no Will Kennedy, but he more than fills the void for the YJ's.
Well of course he's ripping, he Jimmy Haslip! He just set the bar bar so high with the solo on the original recording that makes this solo seem like its lacking. But he did miss a couple of changes though!
Don't be sorry for being wrong. While Marcus is a fine drummer (better than I'll ever be) compared to Will he's weak tea. I find he try's very hard to copy Will but he just doesn't have the chops that Will has. He's sort of like someone playing an electric guitar without an amp. You can sort of hear what's being played but without the amp it leaves you wanting more.
they are a group of musicians, but one thing is missing ? there's no diversification ....Bland, very sanitized and I'm really not knocking them, did I hit the like button? YEP!!!
Love this song. Why does no one ever remark about the composing talents of Russ? He composes the most beautiful melodies I have ever heard.
Thanks ❤

I totally agree with you Patricia Britton ! I been following these guys for 15 yrs ! one of the top Jazz bands on the planet !
Definitly ! guys....
Absolute Brilliance. Will Kennedy is such a BAD-ASS. So glad to hear he's back.
I love the space that Jimmy is leaving here for the audience to hear the other player's' contributions to the song.

You da' man!
I am moved to tears whenever I have listened to this recording.
Preach!

"Preach" WHAT ???
I love this song. This is one of my favorite albums and Bob Mintzer is a brilliant sax player bar none...
Will Kennedy is so in the pocket on this, his drummng is so foundatinal, yet it has a flowing quality that moves you into the direction of the song.

So true. That chemistry will never be duplicated.......period.
My all time favorite band. I love the peace and resolve in this song in particular.
I like the way the "Jackets" keep their music true to the ears of their listening audience. I have a difficult time of accepting a perfrormance that is so different from the original, that it can hardly be understood!
So the bassist is just rocking the hell out of that solo and i look. and the bass is upside down. what a beast.
thanks so much for posting my all-time fave yellowjackets tune!

Beautiful, calming, soulful music.
I like how The Yellowjackets and Spyro Gyro end their tracks in the same tempo as they begin them. Listen closely the next time u enjoy them. Its like telling someone a story and refreshing the importance of it at the end.
I have this concert on DVD. Sent to me by Jimmy. Fantastic concert.
Will Kennedy always makes the best decisions.
4:25-4:29 immediately came to mind ;)
amazing album !! love it ! state of the art !
This is the best song of this wonderful band.
Love this tune! Wow!
il migliore jazz elegante mai esistito
Many thanks, SPTAH.
Hey dude. Wipe that tear from your eyes...Will's back!

Bob Mintzer? What the hell need I say about his power and his slithery note usage? This group is second to none! I love the sounds of S[yro Gyra, but the Yellowjackets you see here, are the shiznit!
beautiful music.....
Yes, I also just read a news release confirming that Will is returning to the group. This is great news!
It's a patch with the strings and acoustic together., Also, notice when the bass solo is going on and it cuts to Russell you can see him playing the bottom bass line on the top keyboard. Just awesome. Makes me want to just throw my keyboard out the window. haha.

GREAT QUATERNARY..!

@bellgrill This song is soo amazing...one of my favorite YJ cuts. And I agree, Will Kennedy added a certain "something" to their music.
Great Musicians! I love 'm
@bellgrill : He's BACK! Saw them live a few weeks ago at the SF Jazz Festival and Kennedy is on their upcoming album. Hooray!
I played this a while ago in jazz combo.
Bassist.......sax players......syncopation at it's finest!! And the drummer filled the rest in,whew!!.....scandalous!!!
Yellowjackets create their own Jazz. Distinguishable from any other type of Jazz.
que maravilhaaa
to be this tight live...
@SPTAH Saw them with Will in Columbus last night. Incredible.
@bellgrill I'm a little behind but I just found out that Will is back. They are working on a new CD with Will and he is now their drummer again. Not sure what happen but the yellowjackets site wishes Marcus the best so who knows..

Super
@Diddle654 He was endorsed by Evans so he likely played a few different ones but the ST Dry was what he used most often during this period.
ESTO LLEGA AL ALMA
@bellgrill He didn't vanish, he was playing around with tons of people. He was playing a whole lot with Lee Ritenour, I think with Patrice Rushen's solo tours, and with Chuck Loeb (IIRC.)
That is not a Tobias Classic. That is a Tobias Basic Five. BTW Jimmy is now playing Roscoe Basses
@juanbarros88

@mileswarm
It's a good thing he's back on their 2011 album.
@jaktripz does anyone Know what kind of head
will used back then on his snare, always love the deep tone he has, almost like a timbale
@juanbarros88
[Part 1] On the album he's playing in unison with the piano. @grisznik yep, he did. He muted a flat, and tried to overstep it. Still, brilliant performace!!!!!
@mileswarm Will the bestless dramer in the world,...)))))
Ora foi tutti kinare kapoccien e sentire. ja?"
JA!
Is Mintzer still playing with these guys?
@jimmykam
Coolnew material?
Jamming
Don't feel sorry for Marcus Baylor, AKA "the new kid on the block" with the YellowJackets. He's holding his own. Trust me. He's no Will Kennedy, but he more than fills the void for the YJ's.
how does Russell trigger the strings while playing the acoustic sounds?
While Marcus Baylor isn't Will Kennedy, Marcus more than gets the job done. But I have to agree, Will Kennedy raise the bar!
@free2bpoppie
Oh, yeah, no doubt about that :D
Well of course he's ripping, he Jimmy Haslip! He just set the bar bar so high with the solo on the original recording that makes this solo seem like its lacking. But he did miss a couple of changes though!
What album/CD is this cut from, pray tell? Me wants it.
Wow, Jimmy's human!! Did he slip up on that first line?
Is there an oboe right at the beginning?
Soprano
Did Jimmy Haslip really mess up between 4:16 and 4:18? Can you hear it too?
True! Haha... I love him even more: it's good to be human
no man soprano sax
Jimmy Haslip is ripping ass on this! What are you guys talking about?! lmao - Haslip is a bass guru, study well.
Yeah Kennedy did real base of all of that, Baylor is only messing.
I'm sorry,but I personally think Marcus here can navigate circles around Will,especially the Will of late! imho
Don't be sorry for being wrong. While Marcus is a fine drummer (better than I'll ever be) compared to Will he's weak tea. I find he try's very hard to copy Will but he just doesn't have the chops that Will has. He's sort of like someone playing an electric guitar without an amp. i felt a bit like he was just running scales...he's a monster, but i felt this was a bit lacking in creativity, bit like my solos...haha!!
peace
they are a group of musicians, but one thing is missing ? there's no diversification ....Bland, very sanitized and I'm really not knocking them, did I hit the like button? YEP!!!
what are you looking for?
I miss Jimmy 😒
@uncleplankton Could be bald or have green hair for all I care
Will is a bad cat... I almost feel sorry for the new drummer ...not! lol
JImmy Haslip: Excellent bass player. Terrible haircut.
@bellgrill
It's a good thing he's back on their 2011 album.
