Such a beautiful tune! Beautiful bass melody at the bridge. It is the incredible signature styled compositional writing the has kept me a fan all these years!
No one is really proficient at the electronic wind instrument except Bob Mintzer. Bob has found ways to make the EWI truly distinct from the electronic keyboard. I don't think I've even seen anyone else play it but Bob, now that I think about it.
I can't even begin to describe how much I love the Yellowjackets and have done since their first album back in 1981. I got to see them at Ronnie Scott's in London a few years ago; they are an incredible live act.
Gotta agree w/ you BB. Their music crosses all lines and none at all. Just pure music for the sake of enjoyment. Not judgemental, free as the wind, smart, full of emotion, spiritual and takes you on a journey and you never heven had to leave the confines of your own mind. The perfect solution for a world in desperate need of some peace.
I just checked and I have 8 CD/LPs of the Yellow Jackets. I fell in love with them the first time I heard them. They continue to be great musicians, creative, and continue to provide quality recordings. My being a drummer, one of my favorites is Out Of Town on their Four Corners CD- these guys can swing too. The short but completely appropriate drum solo, at 4:30 into the track just kicks my behind! I cant listen to it without getting the biggest grin my face can make
This entire song is fantastic, quintessential mid-era Yellowjackets. My absolute favorite part is the EWI and synth chord riff that starts at 6:40, such a great groove!
My deceased beloved brother Mário Castelo (12/05/1955-05/16/2005) was the fave drummer of Clube da Esquina. Read Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges. He introduced YJ to me and he could jam and play his drums following exactly like YJ. This is for you bro!
You can see it as 4/4 with a slower tempo, 6/8 with a higher tempo or even 3/4 (but 8ths make more sense then). If it's 4/4, the groove can be seen as "overriding" which means keeping a steady pulse to give listeners something to relate to when you are actually trying to disguise the bar and beats. Works well for odd time signatures (just play steady 4 on the ride or hihat over 7/8. Doesn't make it feel awkward anymore). In the end it really is all math. It just depends on how you think about it
OK, you are absolutely right! Brian Blade has been along some time already and to my concept the most mature. Your observation is justified! Brian Blade has indeed more hours on his gage. greetz
Indeed one of my favorite band and favorite drummer. Marcus is among other new guys like Brian Blade and Antonio Sanchez one of the musical guys around. There are drummers that have nice "tricks", but lack in musicallity. On what side do you want to be?! As we are making music,... :)
@rayks35 Interesting. I guess it depends on which "era" we're talking about. I've always thought of Ricky Lawson as the one that laid the groundwork for the sound & Will that extended it (a decade after the band had already been established & won multiple Grammies). "Matinee Idol" did it for me. I ran out & bought that CD. What a strong debut album that remains. Anyways, I like ALL versions of the band. There's a live version of "Father Time" w/Erskine doing some stellar work. It's all good...
@seanmckay6 I tottaly agree with you... music is quite different from sports... if some people are concerned with this matters they probably never listened music like they should... its a shame (even if these guys are all ridiculously good musicians, but... nevermind). Great upload!
@seanmckay6 Of course, we all know Rickey Lawson is the best, so there's really no argument, right? :P Check out "Lazaro" off Lifecyle album. That tune is one of those finely-crafted, Grammy-worthy tunes with that great YJ sound. And Marcus is RIGHT THERE on it!
Man, that's a tough one. What about Will Kennedy? I mean, that's the obvious distinction, but personally since the '90's I've been a firm believer that Dave Weckl is THE drummer. And I stand by that position today, but Marcus Baylor is no slouch. As much as you won't be able to compare Oscar Pistorious to Jimmy Haslip, you can't really compare Marcus Baylor to Will Kennedy. I love the Yellowjackets. I'm excited about all of them.
who are you replying to? You are right, but is nothing wrong with recognition of good artists. Competion is for starters maybe, but you can only paint if you understand and reach a certain level. iow before you paint you got to know how hold a brush... and after that what colors make sense.

Love Will Kennedy to death but Marcus Baylor brought an energy and feel to the Jackets that made them truly sound fresh.

Smooth and accessible, these cats are the real deal!
If you ever get the chance to go to see them in concert, do yourself a huge favor and go!!

OMG!!!! These progressions are so killer!!!
THE BEST DRUMMER OUT THERE TODAY!!
This rocks!
LOVE these guys!
Bob Mintzer wrote it back in for the YJ album "Run For Your Life"

Equilibrio, dose certa,sensibilidade,respeito,integração.
Tudo isso e mais uma linda composição.
É pura alegria!
best version of this I've heard yet on YT. Taste and space but lots of burn.

It's all of the above: 6/8, 3/4, and 6/4 at the same time at parts. You can write it anyway you want.
¡Extraordinaria ejecución!!!
Extraordinary performance!!!
Wonderful music!
¡Música maravillosa!

bardzo dobra muzyka. lubię!
the song is 4/4 with a 6/8 feel in the groove I think because the accents in the chords and melody fit 4/4.
It's a simple override technique.
Gotta love that EWI
i get to open for these guys, fuck yeah
@rayks35

while it can be all of the above, I have to agree that the "feel" is based in 12/8

very good
@JonP1961
They were at aj azz festival in casper WY, and i was in the all state jazz band.
Marcus locking it down nicely on the drums! ( ^ _ ^ )
@seanmckay6 Human nature ( Egotism ) you will always find a smarty pants that 'knows' more than everybody !
4:26-4:45 is SICK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Marcus Baylor.... Wow.....
very nice work! absolutely tasteful breathing sound and soloing! does anyone know if they wrote this song, or who the original composer was?
greez

well here we go again...arguing about which musician is better...maybe I'll just disable comments

yes but then, there are lots of interesting comments too so better not to. Don't let the smallminded spoil it!
Where can I find a live video performance of "Priscilla/It's Almost Gone"?
It would've been nice, if Bob could've switch between tenor and the EWI on this song.

Whats that instrument called? Looks like a flute but sounds like a keyboard. (at 00:41 you can see it)
@basicbruno Lol! Maybe if the prisoners listened to the YJ BEFORE prison....they wouldn't BE IN prison! :-)
@basicbruno So did you get them to play the song by now?
@Internalcryfountain
where? and will you be bringing the metal? LOL
how the heck does he play the bass like that, I mean hes left handed?....
agreed, totally silly.
Seems to dude
esta escrito en 6/4 yo tengo la partitura
With all of that, there is no replacement for Mintzer or Russ. Or maybe I just can't think of any. Or probably there just aren't.
@MrRandompower
EWI
uh does this work?
