The A7CR is the second great compact camera Sony has made. First came the a6700. Next the A7CR, the baby A7R5 and big brother to the a6700, all incredible cameras.
I am getting mine tomorrow and as an enthusiast it will meet my needs, Travel and family stuff. I know its limitations but "for my needs" it ticks most of the boxes.
Really, there aren’t any real limitations to this camera as a travel photographer/ filmmaker. I would totally use this in a documentary situation for photo or video
I carry the A7rV with a 24-70mm f/2.8 when it’s about the photography. I carry the A7Cr with a 40mm f/2.5 when it’s about the travel. Works great, for me.
Yes. It is. I got rid of my 6D and all Canon gear and preordered my A7CR. After one year of use, I would say it's perfect(except my thumb pad kept accidentally rotating the dial. have to disable the rotation operation which is sad).
I removed the sensor from mine and replaced it with a thin slice of ham. The resolution suffered as a result. But it smells nice when you remove the lens. For now anyway 👍🏻
Great point, the only weird thing I found myself doing a lot was actually using the evf which would make that a little harder but I know I’d be a minority there. Most don’t like how small it is. In the times I was using the monitor that is way easier for sure!
Great work, that mic is crazy good! I went for the a7cii as I'm leaning a little more towards video (and it's cheaper), but these cams just have the best form factor. Also thanks for the views from back home, my sister got to experience the Swiftie invasion but I only watched it through her stories.
Hey thanks! The mic really is great and it was perfect timing after my rode shotgun died 😢. The a7cii is also such a good camera… anything compact that can do stills and video at a high quality in a tiny body is a win in my books! You’re from Vienna? Beautiful city but very hot 🥵 wish we had more time in the mountains but was a cool experience hanging with the swifties for sure!
Wouldn't the A7C II (and even the OG A7C) be a better camera if you are using it for video as well as stills? I've been using the A7R IV for a while now, whilst that's an older camera with the an older processor, its got the same sensor and the 61mp is a pretty big handicap for video.
Not in the a7cr. It has the same dual native iso as the a7rv of 800 and 2500 but I usually push to 3200 and the noise is so minimal I bump it even a bit higher if I have too. There was a big jump in the a7rv video capabilities from the iv. What have you found to be the handicap?
@@joshwhitee For video, if you aren't using a native resolution sensor - the higher your Megapixels (above the resolution you are shooting at) the more rolling shutter, binning, oversampling etc. issues are introduced. This is why the A7s (the dedicated video skew of the A7) is capped as 12mp. 61mp is really pushing viability for video and there are lot of compromises to even get it working. All of Sony cameras with the 61mp sensor heavily compromise to make video viable. E.g. 4k 60 is only possible on the A7R 4, 5 and the A7CR because it shoots in crop mode and you are cutting out a big chunk of the megapixels in the sensor. Active stabilisation forces another crop on all modes. You only get 4k 30 with no crop with some serious binning as well. Don't get me wrong, the A7CR Is a great camera but like all of the "R" skews on Sony cameras, they prioritise stills heavily at the cost of video performance - the same way the "S" skews prioritise video at the cost of stills performance. IMHO the standard skews (a7, A7c, etc.) are much better as hybrid cameras.
Definitely still for pros IMO. But depends on the work you’re doing. I used to be of that train of thought as well but one slot is all you need to shoot the shots that get you paid. What’s your hesitation with one slot?
@@joshwhitee Sounds like youre doing mental gymnastics to justify it. 1 slot is simply just not a replacement for 2 slots. What is your back up plan when the first card fails? Unfortunately the a7cR is not suitable for any important paid professional work.
I’ve shot for many pro level clients. Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Raptors, Porsche Canada etc… for years now with other pro’s and none of us dual record…🤷♂️ let’s also look at professional drone photographers and cinematographers. They also only use one card slot. That argument is a moot point these days. But you do what works for you! All I can say is this camera is fantastic and I’d be more than comfortable using it in a pro situation. There isn’t a bad camera these days I just really like this one even though I don’t own it. So I’m gonna keep somersaulting my way around town. Weeee!
@@joshwhitee You sound like a very reckless freelancer. I hope for the sake of your clients they don't rely on you for any super important once in a lifetime opportunity work. Please don't spread bad advice or misinformation.
@@BoxxyFan May I ask what you shoot? Because the type of work I do means I'm relay recording and I have runners/ producers that I'm constantly swapping cards with where it makes 0 sense for me to dual slot record. I fill a card up and a producer hands me a new one... and yes if you watch some more of my content you'll see my clients do in fact, trust me with their super important, once in a lifetime opportunity work! Hope you're business is doing well as well ♥

This camera is amazing. So versatile. I absolutely love your intro!

I've used my 24mm 2.8 for my walk around lens and I was not disappointed.
Yah I’m really curious about the other two (40MM and 50mm) as walk around lenses as well!

Good tip! I’ll try that soon
You can separate picture profile settings with still and vid in the a7 IV and a7s iii. You can set all that up in your menu. 👌
I have been wanting this camera for a long time I finally purchased it today via Sony trade in promotion going on right now great video
Jealous! I had to give mine back
You can use touchscreen as touchpad to change af point. Very easy and faster than joystick.

Excellent video! Now I’m feeling inspired to get back to Scotland again haha.
Excellent video, Josh.
Wow first time seeing audio in a video
First time for everything!
