What she said and the way it was said is silly. If anything, she should have just said they felt safer cause they live farther inland from the coast and decided to ride out the storm for that reason. Cause in a way she did sound insensitive. As a native Floridian, I have been through many storms and just made it through this one. If I were in one of the mandatory evacuation areas then I would leave, no question. But I have never been for this reason, lol. Storm surge us no joke. It is common sense to leave when you are in the direct path of that. Other than that, I hunker down and know that God has control over ALL. We are fine like always here in Manatee county.

@@sxy307280 Yeah, I could tell from the type of development they lived in they lived inland in probably a C or D zone and weren't required to evacuate which in FL you don't evacuate if you don't have to. And they live in a newer home with impact windows that are both built by code to withstand winds of these intensities. So better they stay put and not take up gas, a hotel room or spot in a shelter from someone in a much more vulnerable position who needs to get out more.

Sometimes it’s a matter of not overwhelming nearby services.
If you know everyone’s gonna run to the same places to get saftey if you are better off and know it and understand the place you live then it’s rude to go and take the spot of someone who actually really needs it or needs the help. It’s like pushing a cancer patient out of wheelchair because you just found out you might have sprained an ankle. Like maybe you need that chair but that other guy sure as hell definitely needed/wanted it.
Hurricane season is a season if you’re aware and familiar with how it goes it’s not different then a snow storm or a sand storm or a tornado or a earthquake. Sometimes your life experience your total number of years dealing with a problem repeatedly will ensure you’re survival through it. That and modern buildings in Florida are water sealed reinforced have excellent building standards for durability in storms and water when they’re kept up to date by the owners. But that’s also a matter of wealth and who can afford such luxuries

Not diminishing the devastation, scientists and engineers should be working on ways to stop these in their track. I understand satellites can detect an eye forming when its about 1/4
of a mile across. Small enough to have one of the weaker walls blown apart with munitions or microwave technology. It's time we try to control this terrible life threatening hazard.

My heart breaks for all Floridians who are being devastated by Hurricane Ian and my prayers go out to you.
But, I want to remind a commentator on this abc channel that there was two storms in 2021 that wreaked so much damage to Louisiana , Laura and Delta. Laura came through the coast line of Cameron, LA on August 20, 2021 as a category four hurricane with a wind speed of 148 mph, surge of eighteen feet which destroyed Cameron and many other towns along the coast line. It traveled up to Lake Charles, LA north into Beauregard Parish, Allen Parish (where I live) and on up to Shreveport, LA and was still a hurricane registered as a category one with 77 fatalities. Six weeks later as we Louisianians were reeling from that devastating hit Delta came and devastated us even more.
Our resilience and so much help from others from other states afterward we were able to piece together our lives. But, I will say that even two years later, we still have recovery mode with so many homes still damaged or have blue roofs
Florida I know your fear, your pain and anguish as I am sure many others who went through Laura and Delta feel it as well.
Again prayers, healing and strength to you Florida.

To be honest, there used to be at least one typhoon of this kind directing at Taiwan in East Asia every year. Yet, perhaps also due to climate change, typhoons of this kind stop coming and even forming themselves here. We should be careful about these changes. And just a reminder, infrastructures definitely need upgrades due to the fact that there might be more uncertainties of climates in the near future. At least in Taiwan, the damage wouldn’t be be huge as compared to what Ian has brought to America now, mainly because the buildings are concrete, and administrative preparations for typhoons are systematically ready.
