This should be shown to everyone who lives in a Hurricane prone area. The storm surge is hard to describe in words. This video shows how deadly it truly is.
Especially when you consider there are people who ride out the storm. And could’ve possibly left their pets
I think people dont get it. They still want to move to the "beach" and tell everyone at they have the sea "outside" the door!! Just sad.
@@magnuswettermark8293 people in FL or once they get there love to brag about it alot more as well. It makes SoCal look tame.. the pretentiousness yet they chose a painfully mediocre life even with a high salary .

Some of the best hurricane footage ever captured. I don’t know that I can name another video that better captures the ferocity of catastrophic storm surge. Excellent work as always Max!
Agree
Definitely agree, seeing it at ground level really captures its destructive nature
Yes;(
did we have good footage for storm surge with dorian, ida, laura, harvey, maria ?
you must be too young to remember Andrew , and the boat stuck on the 3rd floor of an apartment building LOL or the sail boat that floated half way into the everglades , or the 45' water lines on the lighthouse in Key Biscayne
I live about 7 miles inland from Fort Myers Beach, and the storm surge was about knee deep(I'm 6ft tall) at our apartment complex. The next morning when the water had receded, you can see all of the abandoned cars in the middle of the road from the storm surge. This is a day that I will never forget for as long as I live.
FOR CRYING OUT LOUD !!!!! That was mesmerizing, I’m glad it wasn’t a long video, because I was stuck !
Your safety, thank God for your safety 😢
My wife and I used to live in this exact house on Fort Myers Beach in the mid-1990s. I'm not even kidding. It's hard to wrap my head around how much devastation there is. So heartbreaking.
That's amazing, Mike.! Unbelievable~
Je to strašné,vy jste v bezpečí? Je mi z toho moc smutno.😢
This is heartbreaking!
wild coincidence but this house looks like it asked to be taken away one day
How is it hard to wrap your mind around it? Near the ocean, hurricane happen every year…
UPDATE - We have confirmed via family that the people who were staying in this house at the time of the storm somehow were able to make it out alive even after floating away. We are still getting details and I'll try and post more specific updates but I just wanted everyone to know the good news.

I cant believe they freaking lived through that!!!
When I saw somebody in the doorway at 0:05 I feared the worst. That's incredible that they made it out and great to hear!
Was it that sweet, skinny blonde lady and her son who (I thought) owned and operated the bike/kart rental spot underneath?! I met her a few years ago and befriended her during a two week solo vacation to Fort Myers Beach. She is a strong, impressive person! Although we lost touch, this is the closest I might get to contacting her to let her know I was thinking about her. I left part of my heart and soul in Fort Myers Beach, and the spot had a lot to do with that. She shared her story with me, and even invited me up one sunset for a beer. She gave me the moped I took out for entire days to Sanibel Island, the bicycle I rode south to the preserve, the three-wheeled motorcycle thing just for kicks… I will miss Ft Myers Beach. I’ll come down next Spring to help contribute to economic recovery…
That truly is good news.
This is downright brilliant. Years ago as a reporter, I wanted to post cameras in storms. Go-Pros have changed the world. Tell me exactly how you did this? Battery life? Harddrive storage? When did you mount the camera and where did you go for safety after you mounted it?
Same. I wish Max Olson Chasing would reply to your questions.
Thank you for allowing me to share this with our clients. Everyone needs to see how much damage Hurricane can cause. You do amazing work...stay safe!
We’re new to Florida and had a little bit of power outages in our area. My 8 year old was complaining and so I showed him this video to help him understand how lucky we are to still have our home standing. Power outages are nothing compared to what happened to so many peoples homes. My heart breaks for those who were most affected by this hurricane😞
Big time lucky I’m in Tampa and we got lucky

Holy crap this footage is unreal! This is absolutely insane, hard to fathom that amount of storm surge. So glad you guys made it out safe! My thoughts are with Florida right now
And then you have a bunch of idiots saying that this was nothing.
@Timothah Molone But what if my house is on the 40th floor? I HAVE to look down to see anything.
When Dorian hit the Bahamas we had a government official post a video on social media that showed him in waist deep water in his home…
He was on the second floor…
There are maps of the islands that just show how much was submerged by the surge and more than half of them were just vanished under a tide of dirty, debris filled water.
Living here and seeing these sorts of hurricanes happening makes it feel like playing Russian Roulette every hurricane season. It’s no longer, “gotta trim the branches this week” or “I’ll probably need to get a roofer after this”, instead it’s “Is this the year when my home and everything I worked so hard for will be utterly ruined, as well as those of my neighbors, friends and coworkers?”

@1488 Dental Storm surge is able to reach people inland too via rivers etc. Lots of severe inland flooding with Ian.

This is one of the scariest videos I have ever seen and I`ve watched quite a few of them. I feel for anyone who chose to stay and sit through this.
I have experienced two class 5, two class 4 and numerous class 1,2 and 3 hurricanes. I have tried desperately, (with little success), to explain to people over the years of what is capable during one of these monster storms. It's not just the wind, but even more destructive at times, is the storm surges of walls of water. This is the best example of what I have witnessed myself and perhaps this can be used to educate others. Bravo to Max Olson and all who are all to be commended for their foresight in capturing such dramatic documentary footage! Thanks!
Uuumm....but it seems like you never got educated on this. Going through two 5s and two 4s that looked like this footage. My @ss would've been gone after the first one.
Well..Buffalo, NY has its infamous weather as well but frankly, I only miss the food:/
No you haven't. No one calls them "class". The correct term is "Category". But hey, don't let your lies get tripped up by little details. Carry on.
Class? You are full of shit!
So why didn't you learn from the first storm to leave while you could so you didn't have to experience the other 3?
Unless you have legitimate reasons that's plain dumb.
This needs to be on every single broadcast when a hurricane threatens land. I literally have chills looking at this.
Imagine seeing this, and then realizing that you’ll never get to see it as it was before… I was on this island almost every single day
Amazing! And THANK YOU for not thinking the sounds of the storm needed dramatic music. The real sound was dramatic enough!!

@@Ratlins9 sorry it upsets you. To me, Timelapse means every frame is time lapsed which changes the perceived speed of motion. I went into Google map of this location and walked this Ave C with the 360 view photos and this video really gives a perspective of the storm surge when compared to what the area looked like normally. But that water just sent it on it's merry way. And reading THE FAMILY WAS INSIDE DURING THIS?????

We went through this storm in N Ft. Myers and even though I had no storm surge, it was no picnic either. We never got the eye but stayed in the eyewall 6-7 hours or more with almost constant 100-125 mph gusts and that might be conservative.
The backside came in about 6:30-7:00 pm and was ever bit as strong as the front side but only lasted until about 8:30-9:00 pm before calming down some. No house damage but a lot of tree damage and all the older mobile home parks to my south really took a beating and deposited sheet metal and styrofoam insulation aplenty on my 5 acres. Just finished cleanup a week ago.
I am so glad these folks and their pets survived that wild ride and hope all that see this video will give more thought about evacuating storm surge areas when the next big blow comes their way.
The dream of maybe one day retiring to Florida has pretty much washed away for me.

Great video. It truly captures how one minute you’re on dry pavement and a few hours later you’re swallowed by the ocean.
I live in Florida. I'm scared of storms because I know the power of the waves because we're boaters. In a 60' boat the waves on a sunny day can humble you so quick. Mother Nature that owns that sand, we humans are astoundingly naive that we control anything. Jacque Cousteau many years ago said on video NO ONE SHOULD LIVE WITHIN 10 miles of the coast, NO ONE. He said it should all be day parks that close at dusk but he said the greed of the unsafe building will come back to haunt us and it has. Cousteau was brilliant and no one wanted to listen to him. I have always adhered to his advice. I lost my front porch and we have roof damage and I couldn't be happier to have so little damage and a home to come back home to. I am so thankful to have followed Cousteau and all reading this should research his views. My heart ❤ goes out to those affected by Ian.🙏

I agree, this is must viewing, especially for future storms. It would be great to have a time stamp to see how fast this happened.
Insane 😲sad that family lost their house .. prayers for Florida. Glad you are okay.
This is why the focus on expiremental storm surge forecasts with NOAA and NWS are so needed. Wind speed categories are helpful, but in the end it's water that kills the most people and causes the most damage. And these videos are important to give visual frames of reference! It's hard to imagine the scale of what 15' of surge across several miles of coastline actually looks like, especially while standing on a sunny street with the hurricane still 2 days away.
What the NHC should do is get rid of the Saffir Simpson scale. Do a 1 to 5 scale for wind one for rain forecast and one for surge and add up the numbers. So theoretically 15 is the highest you could go.
I had no idea, incredible and terrifying footage.

From someone who doesn't live in a hurricane prone area, all I can say is, WOW! I'm speechless; I'll take subzero temps and blizzards any day of the week. Thanks for posting and educating me and others.
My mother wanted me to move to Florida. I said no. You have to deal with a hurricane like this on more then one occasion. New Jersey I saty even tho they sometimes reach here. But every year it's hitting Florida. Maybe more then once a year if God ain't on your side
Same here, however I have relatives that live in Florida on the Gulf Coast. They are still waiting on any word of their house. Me and my Boyfriend lived in Tampa, Florida for about 6 months after our now 10 yr old Daughter was born. Our Daughter was born just East of Tampa.
And the storms will continue to be more frequent and severe. I too will gladly take subzero temps and blizzards! You know about it ahead of time, and people know to stay home where it's warm, in their flannel jammies and hot drinks, and watch it through the window.
Fortunately hurricanes do not occur in the winter when many people go to their homes, and yes, if they are there!!!
I’m a firefighter and my station is on the beach on the gulf coast in the panhandle. I pray we never get this because I have to be at work when a hurricane comes.

I said...what's that? she said it's so much worse than a hurricane and she never said anything else so I was freaking out. I finally moved 5 months later. I stayed in Port Charlotte Florida and they convinced me to move there but after 8 days I didn't have peace so I moved to California. I'm so thankful.
Having seen this footage I can now say when the next hurricane comes, I’ll be vacationing in Alaska where the weather is normal.
Hello 👋 there how are you doing today hope you're having a specific day over there
Certainly looks like a nice place to vacation, can't imagine living in such an inviting and beautiful area.
Thank you for sharing this. I live in New England and have dear friends in central Florida. Sanibel Island has been my family's favorite vacation destination for several decades. So peace-filled, and restorative to our souls. We send daily prayers to all the people who are affected by this storm.
Sanibel is gone. Might be another decade before great tourists like you ever make it back there. I'm afraid to see what South Seas Resort (Captiva) looks like right now.
I’ve watched a lot of footage from this hurricane and this has me floored.
Wonderful videos that will save many lives in the future!
What an interesting video it would be to use your drone to get video from where the house was to where it ended up. On the map it looks like it must have been a trip of horror for both survivors and their dogs!
Great work Guys! 👍
Unbelievable. But clearly should be believed. This is so incredibly sad. I cannot imagine having my home full of all of my possessions just uprooted and gone and destroyed. My heart goes out to all who have experienced any level of this.
best video showcasing how quickly things can turn. Look how the water rose so high it made those palms dissapear .... my heart goes out to everyone who lives in the areas hit by ian. Time to move people
it can be very difficult to comprehend the power of mother nature sometimes. fantastic video, thank you for sharing!
Holy cow!! Look how HIGH that water got!! WOW! This is downright horrifying!!
Gettagarip. JFC...
Amazing that the camera never stopped. If only buildings were as sturdy as a palm tree 😳
amazing video....if i lived there and survived,i would definitely move away
This is fantastic footage. A friend of mine was a reporter at the News-Press and lived in that house back in '98. He pointed out the video to me. How did you make this? This is the best explanation of storm surge I've ever seen.
He had left remote sensors at different locations to get data and footage to analyze for as long as their sensor stayed up. I’m stunned this one Made it till next day (or was that just during the eye calm at the end? I’d assume that wouldn’t offer enou time for the water to be gone already). Scary. I was watching you guys, Max but lost your stream and switched to Ryan’s channel. But my girl and I were worried about you guys bad when your live streams dropped but the other chasers all up. Glad you guys are safe and this is amazingly heartbreaking foootAge.
Living up here in Tampa area for the couple days prior we were expecting that and we’re surprised when the predictions shifted suddenly. Not much evac time for them for sure. I pray they used it.
Is your friend Mike Brassfield?
A GoPro strapped to the huge power line pole outside the Lani Kai would be my guess.
@@SephBane LOL, yes, Brassy, you know him?
@@chasesquiresecuador He posted in the replies above about living in this house.
Frightening and tragic. My heart goes out to all the people who went through this😐
Great Timelapse footage….amazing…..Storm Surge is VERY serious. This shows exactly why. Storm surge is 15 ft.
Waves on top of that are 3 ft….18 ft wall of water.
Wow. That’s horrendous. It’s also sad for wildlife and any lost or homeless pets.
