His point was the last generation was where people picked their poison. They have started building up their digital libraries and play on same systems as their friends. The quote is always cut off and doesn’t include it fully.
@@HazXbox The Xbox 360 wouldn't have existed if Halo hadn't driven sales of the original Xbox. The original Xbox would've been just another failed console on the scrap heap of history alongside the Atari Jaguar, Panasonic 3DO, Sega Dreamcast, etc.
GameCube didn’t even do well , no did n64 or Wii U , but what keeps them special is they kept all they 1st parties . Sony already have their games goin to other consoles. Don’t forget Sony was scared in their boots about the activision purchase that they went to court crying about it . If they was in a good scenario they wouldn’t have to worry about it . Nintendo didn’t 🤷♂️
I bought both the PS5 and the Xbox Series X shortly after launch and literally just this week sold my Series X. Xbox announcing they were releasing Indiana Jones on PlayStation after previously having said they weren't going to was the final straw for me. What's the point in owning a console when its exclusives are being released on other platforms? I started buying all my third-party games on PS5 a while ago and I couldn't justify my Series X sitting there gathering dust when I could get $350 for it on eBay. There's no good reason outside of Game Pass to buy a Series X, and even then I became sick of paying an increasingly more expensive monthly subscription fee for games. There's no strong unique selling point to Xbox anymore.
I've been saying this same thing for about 15 years now, and I always get blasted up the bung hole from the gaming community with threats and hate. I buy consoles for exclusives...period. No exclusives on a given console means I'll just play 100% of my games on PC. The problem is, the exclusives have mostly been trash for a long time now. On a side note, Fable was dumped because of the negative atmosphere around the creator, Peter Molyneau. Most gamers hated him years ago because he's basically a con artist.
FINALLY No exclusives hardly give ANYONE a reason to buy a console, if Xbox and PS got rid of exclusive at this very moment, hardly anyone would buy an Xbox bc PS5 is the more popular console by far We don't want a monopoly of consoles
0:29 this is quite literally the EXACT MOMENT that I decided to abandon Xbox & get a PS5 after being with Xbox for 17 years. my logic being, well if the head & ceo is straight up telling me things aren't going to get better than they are right now, there's really no more guesswork. he's telling me to my face "don't expect any more from us than what you're currently getting, for a really long time." at that point I've felt like I had been waiting for first party games since 2013 & it was 2023 at that point. I was done waiting. I'm out.
They’re telling everybody they don’t need an Xbox to play their games. There’s no incentive to get an Xbox anymore. I’m sure they’re still going to exist in the gaming space but probably not the console market anymore. They’re selling everyone SaaS through gamepass.
@@Zetheek independent =/= indie, they were very well known in 2019 for some of the most iconic games in history. They also had a lot of money. Doesnt seem very indie to me when you have fame and money and a good amount of employees
Except that isn't what he is saying. He is not saying that exclusives don't sell consoles. But for the amount that goes into creating a console, exclusives don't reproduce that amount needed. Modern consoles are costing way too much to make, this is why Xbox is moving away from the console itself and are focusing more on software, subscription, and making sure their owned games are everywhere because they will make money regardless.
@@darryljack6612 11:45 He is saying exclusives matter, that's why he asked us what we thought on the matter and on exclusives as a whole Xbox is moving away because their exclusives haven't been hitting the same since the 360, xbox is moving away from exclusives because they embraced the pc market, xbox is moving away from exclusives because they don't even particularly care about their own console since they put EVERY game on pc AND putting their Gamepass on other platforms. So yes, they do matter
@@fortniteisexpensive Okay several things... 1, the Switch isnt a console. It is a displayable handheld. Much less money and resources goes into its production than actual consoles. To say it is a console, is like calling a laptop or a steam deck a desktop. When that is not what they are in reality, even if you can use them that way. 2, You are misunderstanding what is being said by Phill Spencer. The argument being made is not that exclusives don't matter, but that they aren't doing enough. As I already said exclusives don't reproduce that amount needed that went into making the console in the first. Why do you think Sony are selling and moving their games to PC after a given time? It's because while the PS5 is making money from its exclusives, it is not making enough to justify them being an exclusive or to even justify the hardware. Consoles are becoming too expensive to produce that the games don't make up for the considerable amount of money lost.
I have owned both the Series X and PS5 since day one. I actually started the generation most excited for the Xbox. I finally sold my Series X about two months ago. Thing is so pointless if you own a PS5. Disappointing!
It's just one big oof! That someone can't hop in a reply here and say Hifi rush, or Indiana Jones, or Sea of Thieves like we could before. All I can say is the health of the market depends on a competitor to PlayStation. Seeing as there isn't going to be another company jumping in to take Microsoft's place as a console maker, Xbox is all there is for direct competition. Without xbox, the ps5pro is now $700 and Sony's single player games require a PSN account on PC. Without xbox, the PS6 will probably be $800 maybe even push for $1,000, and not have a disc drive option. Without xbox, Sony will probably increase game prices to $85. I know that xbox needs to earn support and force people to get the console by having great exclusives, but we also need to think ahead of the consequences if we allow competition in the market to fall apart. Also, remote play on Xbox is a game changer, great backwards compat, fps boost with resolution upscaling for older game, and simple cross save and play anywhere across devices are all pretty good features to remember.
Console exclusives sell consoles… it’s a fact. I recently purchased a used XBox One X (my family’s first Xbox ever, and I’ve been gaming since 1984) for the Halo and Forza games. My son wanted to play Halo - case closed. I will buy Nintendo consoles for their Mario/Zelda/Metroid games, and Sony PlayStations for God of War and Spider-Man. It’s all about games and gameplay experiences. Graphics matter but not as much as gameplay and unique experiences… and this will be the case moving forward.
The Down Fall of Xbox is entirely MS fault. 1) Not Focusing on making Great Games 2) Letting your most important ip (Halo) Get Destroyed by 343 incompetence. 3) Training your consumers to not buy games 4) Gamepass
I love my Switch, i have a PS5 for the exclusive games, and i want a reason to buy an Xbox but theres no game worth it for me to buy that console🤷🏻♂️ im open to it but they 😴😴😴😴
@@VeilorPlays Played it on ps4 and given how boring it was I'm glad I saved my money with the ps5 also there games are all going to PC so it's really just Nintendo left out.
@@stevenbishop1782 I mean that's your take on it. I loved the games. As for Sony bringing games to PC, that's usually like a year after or more. So if you can wait sure.
My observation is that Xbox ended up focusing on IPs but Playstation was right to focus instead on devs. What I mean is, look at the example of the 1st party dev teams. After Naughty Dogg made 3 Uncharted games, they wanted to make something else and so they made The Last of Us. Uncharted had a Vita spinoff but Playstation supported the dev team more so than making them continue the same IP. You then look at Bungie, at Lionhead, at Ensemble, Aces Games Studios… they either no longer exist or dont work for Xbox anymore but their IPs have continued: Halo, Fable, Age of Empires, Microsoft Flight Simulator It gives the impression to me that Xbox doesnt care who makes the games, as long as the IPs they care about can get continued to be made under their logo. I think this is key why Playstation exlusives will likely continue being great but Xbox exclusives struggled. Playstation has long recognized that what’s more important than a profitable IP is the creative team responsible for that said IP
disgree.. naughty dog make simiialr games but with a different skin.... you can say what you want but its true... the gameplay in those games are on rails, cutscene heavy with QTE. the moment to moment gameplay is janky... all Naughty Dog are good at is creating a world and making it look pretty. Unfortuneatly its the same for most PS exclusives and you wonder why its the Hardcore exclusives buyers that play them.. that's %10 of the PS user base.. Playstations biggest returns is MTX from 3rd party games.. even Playstations user base largely ignore these games..
@@plummleys4514 i dont think ur disagreement addresses my point tho that Playstation devs have bn allowed to stray away from their IPs. Naughty Dog got to go from Crash to Jak to Uncharted to TLOU. Insomniac was allowed to stop making Resistance so they can do Spider-Man instead. Guerilla didnt have to mKe another Killzone and was supported on trying out Horizon instead. Sucker Punch got to experiment with Infamous after Sly and now is doing so with Ghost series. Media Molecule didnt have to make another LBP game but was given permission to make Tearaway and Dreams.
@@solidkwon but your point means nothing.... compulsion games made contrast, then we happy few then allowed to make south of midnight. Double fine made brutal legend, broken age and phychonauts. inexile made tides of numera, bards tale, wasteland 1 & 2 and now clockwork revolution. Ninja Theory hellblade, bleeding edge, hellblade 2 and now project mara Obsidian, pillars of eternity, outer worlds, grounded, pentiment and avowed. Plaground games, Forza Horizons and now Fable Your point means nothing if its supposed to be some winning stance.. most studios get to work on passion projects or get told to work on a game by who ever owns them..
@@plummleys4514 Playground and Obsidian I’ll concede on but all other examples are studios that were acquired after those IPs had already bn made. Xbox acquired Compulsion after We Happy Few had shipped. Inexile was aquired after it released Wasteland 3. Double Fine was acquired while they were making Psychonauts 2. None of these studios had to get Xbox’s approval about what they wanted to make prior to their acquisition Maybe Xbox is starting to realize better that they have to work on cultivating their teams but you’re also talking about IPs here that are not super popular like the Playstation ones i mentioned. To let teams work on another IP after the previous IP has low sales or low cultural significance is easy. But when Bungie after Halo Reach said they wanted to work on a different IP, what happened? Halo is an uber popular IP. Xbox parted ways with Bungie. Xbox had partnered with Epic for Gears. Epic wanted to do something else after Gears 3. And then they made Fortnite which turned out to be multiplatform. Imagine if Xbox got to have an exclusive publishing rights to Fortnite! Xbox wld b in such a different place. Lionhead wantwd to make something other than Fable. That studio no longer exists. Splosion Man dev team wanted to do something else. That team no longer exists. Playground being allowed to make Fable is really cool. But Fable is an already established super popular IP. It still is nowhere near the risk of allowing Sucker Punch whose inFamous become an iconic Playstation IP instead work on Ghost of Tsushima, a brand new untested IP with mechanics and setting that the team has never experimented on before. Even Obisidian as an example is one I’m not so sure makes the case because yes they were allowed to work on Pentiment, which was a tiny project that only needed 13 people so it wasnt much of an investment of resources, but what would the future of this studios be with Xbox if they wanted to no longer work on Outer Worlds - now a hugely popular IP - and instead invest all of its time and resources on something completely new? I would hope Xbox would be supportive and fostering of such a thing. But their track record so far makes me skeptical of Xbox. Xbox has bn able to acquire IPs and talent behind those IPs, but historically they have not bn able to sustain the talent if the talent wished to stray away from those IPs P

Playstation cant afford to make games anymore.
If exclusives don't sell consoles then why are the consoles that people are buying offering exclusives? I mean, what's the incentive to buy a console if it doesn't offer something unique you can't get anywhere else? Idk how they convinced themselves of this dumb idea that exclusives don't matter, is it just because their exclusives underperformed? I guess a caveat is needed; good exclusives sells consoles, the games need to be good.
Well let's look at that, right now the only console offering exclusives is the PS5. And no the switch isn't an actual console, it is a dockable handheld. The same way a laptop or a steamdeck isn't a desktop PC. Sony are still selling exclusives because that is the way it has always been. But times are changing and they are changing fast. The real question you should be asking is not "why are the consoles that people are buying offering exclusives?", but why are the console(s) with exclusives moving their exclusives PC? Because while the exclusive might sell the console, it is not selling it enough. Money is being made, but a considerable amount is still being lost from a game being an exclusive.
@@darryljack6612 you can't just discount the Switch because it disproves your argument, it is a console, handhelds are consoles, weaker portable ones but consoles still. You added an extra word "desktop" to your analogy, no one claims a laptop or a Steam Deck are desktop PC, but they are PCs. I actually think you're misunderstanding something. PS5 isn't selling as well as PS4 did because it's lacking exclusives. A lot of its major games are still available on PS4 or PC. Why upgrade from a PS4 if you're still going to get the games? If Sony is bringing games to PC, well it's the same thing as the XBox problem. Those consoles are pushing power as the main selling point, not their exclusives. They will always be less powerful than a PC, and if the games are going to PC anyways, I think you're gonna see a shift away from the console market if this keeps up. Those consoles are starting to (if they haven't already) approach diminishing returns; the extra power is not significant enough to justify getting one, especially if the games are still coming to previous gen consoles
@@reeseseater12 Im discounting the switch because it literally isn't one. The analogy you just used would be applicable if i said the switch wasn't an electronic device. The switch as with all handhelds are separated from most true consoles due to form and function. By the metrics most people would call the switch a console, I could literally apply the same logic to my smartphone and call it a console as it does what a console can do. But any reasonable person would say otherwise, as various pieces of tech fall into their own social categories outside of definitions. A smartphone is a phone, a switch is a handheld, and an Xbox is a console. Also no, there is no misunderstanding on my end. If you take Sony's 3 best selling exclusives on the PS5 it still doesn't make up for the majority of units of PS5's currently. Money is being lost on both the end of the game itself and on the side of the console. They go hand and hand to an extent, but there is a considerable amount of loss in comparison to any real gains being made. This is again due to the price of the creation of consoles being made.
@@darryljack6612 no, the Switch is a dedicated video game console, a phone is a phone, even if it could play games. What you're doing is explaining the difference between a PC and a console, people don't claim PCs are consoles, because they're PCs, even if they're optimized for gaming. I'm sorry, you're literally the only person I've seen claim the Switch isn't a video game console, and you're doing it just to justify your argument, which makes it very flimsy and easy to disprove. Handheld consoles are consoles, they're just consoles you can easily travel with. Once again, it's because the PS5 has less exclusives at this point in its life than the PS4 did. If they stopped making PS4 games two years ago (probably when they should've) and all their new games needed a PS5 to play, you'd certainly see more PS5 sales. By continuing to make PS4 games, that still look and perform fairly well, only those who want to play those few PS5 exclusives (or Sony fans who upgrade regardless) will buy. Also, a huge reason money is being loss, outside the losses on consoles (though I think that's no longer the case with PS5, consoles get cheaper to manufacture as time goes on) is because the AAA industry is so hyper fixated on photorealistic graphics and performance those games are super expensive and time consuming to make. So fewer and more expensive games come out, which means less software to support their hardware, so where they'd usually use the software sales to make up for losses on hardware, they have less of that to fall back on.
In any other industry, Spencer would've been fired. He doesn't have the skill set & definitely not the vision required to run an entire console division. His poor decision making & lack of long-term strategies has ran the brand into the ground.
Xbox has never actually been successful in a competitive environment. The main reason the 360 had done so well was because of how hard Sony bungled the PS3 launch. The 360 had been $200 cheaper and games were coming out a whole year earlier than the PS3 because development was infamously difficult on Sony's new piece of crap. That's why despite the Red Ring of Death, the 360 still ended up way ahead. They more or less just got lucky that their main competition was failing so hard. Although PS3 did ultimately sell more units than the 360 by the end of the generation.
It's worth noting that Microsoft did try really hard with the Xbox 360 with exclusivity deals, trying to establish new IPs, and expanding older ones. There was also Xbox Live Arcade going for it. It wasn't just Sony bungling the PS3 that made it so successful. Though the PS3 outselling the 360 at the end was in part due to Microsoft bungling things after the slim and Kinect, which set the stage for the Xbox One and their continued fall from grace. When Sony finally turned things around by cutting the price, changing the marketing, and doubling down on games, Microsoft was falling asleep.
@@deiradinn Ok maybe i am stupid and i don´t understand the superior logic here . Xbox have more users than Playstation but Playstation sell more consoles and more people are playing in a Playstation console , but Xbox have more users . I really need the thing that you are drinking dude it´s good really good .
I think his response of not changing system sales much is because they know last gen sealed their fate when people built their library. Back in the 360 and ps3 gen, 3rd party games thrived on the 360 were because of hardware architecture. Now current gen architecture is all the same, so nothing to give Xbox the edge anymore.
I play my Series S more than my PS5 but only because I have more games because of Games with Gold over the years. Why spend money to get games on PlayStation if I have so many I could play now on Xbox? Except for the exclusives obviously. If I hadn't already had an Xbox digital library I would mostly play PS5 for sure.
As a purely console scrub I enjoy my Series X. It's my Gamepass machine. And, since it's fully backwards compatible I've been clearing out tons of old 360 games I never got around to playing.
Gamepass is the only reason why I own an Xbox. IMO it’s that good and I use cloud all the time, but their view on exclusives is disappointing. They’ve been having ‘great games on the way’ for years now and it’s getting exhausting. I really enjoyed hellblade 2 and hi fi rush but everything surrounding them is ridiculous. Psychonauts 2 tho. 10/10 game without a doubt.
Psychonaut 2 came out in 2021, HiFi Rush came out 2023 in January, HellBlade 2 a short game released in May of this year what were you playing on your Xbox the rest of the time?
Not so fond of the gamepass price hike and removal of day one games from the normal version. We didn't even get older Call of Duty titles and other Activision games at all. Playstation has Extra which is not that bad as compared to gamepass. Also, with Xbox games coming to PS5 simultaneously, no reason to own it anymore. I am just going to sell my Xbox and add some cash to upgrade my PC.
Now with Acivision, i can't see Microsoft leaving the game dev business, however i can't see them staying as a console holder. I mean, look at those Xbox sales numbers.
Having one good exclusive game helps move systems, but honestly, one isn't enough. Most people aren't plunking down several hundred bucks to play a single game. You need a few good exclusives for it to be worthwhile purchase for most people.
I was on leave in the last week and decided to play Halo 3 on the Master Chief collection on my Xbox Series X. I finished the campaign today, and wow. Love it.
At some point during the ABK deal, Satya bent Phil over his desk and gave him the Indian Dry Rub. After the clean up, he told Phil that they are transforming into a game publisher.
I bailed out in 2019 from Xbox because of this reason. I came back to PlayStation. Xbox, to me is just Netflix for games. They had a good thing going with the OG Xbox with their exclusives and a HDD out of the box with internet capabilities. My 300,000+ gamerscore has been sitting dormant ever since.
Microsoft trained Xbx gamers NOT to buy games and had them to subscribe only GamePass. Don't OWN games = Low game sales = low user base = Less 3rd party support = games to be sold on PS5
All I wish they'd do is have the studios they acquired via either Zenimax or Activision-Blizzard actually make games. With all that talent there, there's really no excuse.Let them develop games of the type for which they're known for. But they seem to just be sitting on them. Honestly, it's more than a little bit frustrating when XBox's gameplan keeps changing as often as the wind. They need to stick to a direction and let it play off long enough for it to start paying off.
People are really pissed with Sony right now because of all the PS5 Pro and HZD remaster stuff (myself included). If Phil Spencer doesn't see this as a big opportunity for the next generation of Xbox, then he really should quit the job.
You know what sucks the most , the only people who will suffer from no competition in the console and game exclusivity space is going to be us the consumer because the companies won't have a need to try and make better more affordable and quality games or consoles since there is no one to compete with
Honestly this whole generation of gaming for both Sony and Xbox sux big time! Big disappointment! Nintendo is showing everyone games matter most, not your console. You can have the best graphics ever but with no great library of games, then the console itself is useless.
Love my Xbox One and adored the 360 but i can see all that is wrong with the Xbox brand at the moment (not that the gaming scene is good anyway now). I own a Switch for example and barely touch it besides local coop because the way Xbox One is set up feels so familiar to me. Just prefer playing there. But theres no exclusive games (they are needed) and getting physical games is very hard nowadays as well. Forza, Gears, Halo and Crackdown arent what they used to be but still enjoyed the last ones of each. Can see a lot of 90s SEGA style of decisions in Xbox these days and we know how that ended up 😢 Might still upgrade to a Series X but just because i prefer the vibe of the hole Xbox family when to decide where to play 3rd party games.
Phill wasn't wrong when he said console exclusive don’t sell systems. The 360 still sold well even though it had a hand full of exclusives, Fable Halo, Gears, Forza. you could count all the Kinect games. Xbox 360 Strived on third party games mostly performing better on 360, plus the overall Xbox eco system worked better than others at the time. What killed Xbox was the 2013 fiasco and them not knowing what they did was wrong, then they tried too hard to win back those players, but Sony was already well ahead of them. The PS4 pretty much outnumbered them in so many ways. That is pretty much what has led them to where they are now as a third-party developer (even though they don't want to admit it). It's sad to see Xbox fall so hard, mostly cause competition breaths innovation and great games but when you're the only at the top (Sony) You don't need to put in as much effort when there is no one below you trying to catch up. Except for Nintendo but they are in their own little world and have been doing well.
The 360 was a unique circumstance. I forgot which other RUclipsr said it but it became the default for the "hardcores" because it was less expensive than the PS3 and was less weird than the Wii(the most successful console that generation which had tons of must play exclusives). Once the price drop happened the fortunes reversed didn't it? And it was Sony's system selling exclusives like tlou and uncharted leading the charge. You also discount just how big halo, gears of war, oblivion(one year timed exclusive), Netflix(2 year exclusive agreement), exclusive 360 content for cod played, ect. Microsoft went all in on the exclusives and using it to sell consoles during that generation
I’m sick of people saying oh it’s fine Xbox has Microsoft, they can just waste money and be fine. Yea sure they can but I guarantee Microsoft isn’t happy about throwing money away. Why do you think you see Microsoft finally coming in and taking over Xbox. It’s now Microsoft gaming. Because phil just kept wasting money.
A few things. It seems like their core stratum has just been to be as consumer friendly as possible. And I think they’ve done a good job at it. It just isn’t enough. Going back to exclusives though, I think the biggest mistake they’ve made then generation was buying Activision. What does that have to do with exclusives you ask? Because in order for the deal to go through, they had to talk about how much they hate exclusives. And now the next time they make one you’ll see the ftc lose their minds on them. You watch. This isn’t bad strategy. This isn’t a disconnect. It’s pandering to the ftc.
At this point, I feel like the best move from Microsoft is to partner up with steam and make the steam box or steam x box. A console that would be optimized for steam like the steam deck, but would also play Xbox games lol
if it would allow modding, emulators (.exe ones, not the current dev mode apps being made), and programs like lossless scaling, sony would be cooked. doubt theyll let it happen
1. They need to focus on making games for Fable, Halo, Forza, Gears, Perfect Dark, Psychonauts, and Flight Simulator on a somewhat regular basis (every 2-5 years for each). 2. They need new creative first party games. The 360 era saw the creation of most of their exclusives. They need new stuff. If it doesn't work, try again and do something different, don't abandon it. 3. Exclusives could release at $50 on Xbox, and then 6-12 months later for $70 on other consoles. This would incentivize people to buy an Xbox but not punish people who just want to play the game eventually. I feel like it's the best of both worlds. 4. Great Black Friday discounts on consoles are underrated. It's the only reason I got an Xbox One and why I currently play my Series S more than my PS5, because I own more games on it. PlayStation has better exclusives, but they can still win a console war if they can sell their console to people who would otherwise just get a PlayStation.
At this point is not only about the exclusives, they are losing 3rd party support too… baldurgs gate was delayed, black myth wukong probably never coming in xbox, nothing concrete about sillent hill 2 remake either. This whole situation is feels like xbox betraying their fanbase that spent their hard earned money on their consoles by just giving up…
The 360 had such great Xbox exclusives especially in the shooter genre like Gears of War and Halo. I miss those days. It makes Xbox as a brand stand out from everyone else so I don’t understand why they would want to pivot away from that.
Well where do you expect him to have space for a separate x box set up? Is Switch collection takes up the basement. Unless you want him to do to his wife what he used to and use the whole house.....and all her stuff can just be in boxes again.
Phil is right. Halo isn't even moving the Xbox. Take away legacy franchises from Nintendo what new exclusives would push Nintendo. Making new IP is hard.
Super excited about this channel! This was an awesome chat about the state of Xbox without it needing to be tied to a specific current event or branch out into its own podcast. I remember you saying on your main channel how poorly Playstation game videos performed so hopefully you'll be able to do the same style of video with their games and happenings. I appreciate you and I appreciate you bringing back the hair flip!
As a consumer's perspective, the reason why I bought the snes, ps1, ps2, xbox, wii, xbox 360, ps3, ps4 was because of the good console exclusives. Even the wii has some good exclusive with unique gameplay mechanics that can never be possible on other system not even on the pc.
I made the switch from Xbox to PlayStation several months back and I haven't regretted it for a minute. I know some folks just have both systems which is cool. But I prefer just to be in one ecosystem. And ever since I entered the PlayStation ecosystem and left Xbox I haven't regretted it for a moment. PlayStation has incredible exclusives plus pretty much all the third party stuff as well. Zero need for Xbox.
0:29 Phil is right, it's too late in this generation for it to matter...if they made 5 straight bangers, like 9/10+ games within a 2yr span... they still won't catch up to Sony...they need to do something radical to compete.
The second gears of war E day releases I will be buying an Xbox, gears will always make me buy an Xbox, but they are 4 years into a generation at the moment and I’m no where near getting the console, such a shame
I think the number one thing that will lead to Microsoft’s gaming division getting out of the console market was the Activision-Blizzard buyout. It used to be that the gaming division was essentially a rounding error from the higher ups point of view. So whenever the division underperformed, it wasn’t much of an issue. The buyout was over $70 billion dollars, which even by Microsoft standards is a huge sum. Now that the GamePass has stagnated and hardware sales are dropping, the higher ups are heavily scrutinizing the division. The higher ups will demand changes to make back the multibillion investment. The changes looking likely are getting out of consoles and releasing games on multi platforms.
Your view on the matter is right on the money. It is not about the ideal non-exclusive console, but an acceptance of being done competing and going 3rd party or online service system. Well explained! 👍
FTC, D.O.J, CMA, EU etc.. Ought to break Xbox away from Microsoft to be an independent company. They've already violated their monopoly agreements with the GamePass price hikes.
I was an Xbox guy for 20 years. From the original up to the more recent series console. Their focus on the actual console has shifted so much so i felt like a second class citizen. I had enough and sold my series x after all these comments from Phil, the constant mixed messaging and lack of focus on the console.
I believed in Xbox for the first time in ages when I bought my Series X. It's the last xbox I'll buy. I think this is the console I've regretted buying the most.
Wii U was a commercial failure yet to avoid layoffs, the CEO took a 50% pay cut to help pay for employee salaries, can u imagine Sarah Bond or Phil Spencer do the same? Never!
First Starfield was not a flop You youtubers continue to keep trying to make it into a flop, second Halo was not a flop I still play Halo and get into games in less than 1 minute 2 minutes max I went to try Helldivers 2 on my friends PS5 and it took forever to find a game. I am so tired of youtubers that whenever Sony does something negative instead of talking about that you find something negative to say about Xbox to help people forget what Sony is doing. Where is your video about how after announcing a Horizon remaster that they raised the priced by double to the game, where is your video where the fact is that Astrobot is the only first party game Sony had this year but no, now it's about exclusives not 1st party all of the sudden. Where is your video talking about how it seems the only thing Sony have been giving its players are remasters and remakes? But no lets talk down about Xbox who gave us a new 1st party game plus have others coming out including Diablo DLC and Starfield DLC what DLC doesn't count but it did when it was Elden Ring.
And to add to your point, where was the video for Sony showcasing a $700 console just to play said remasters? It's nasty work. And that's coming from a person who bought a PS5 at launch. The media, content-creators and fanboys have been desparately on Sony's side for the better half of this generation, and it's sad because Microsoft has been the LEAST anti-consumer of all of the companies.
That’s exactly why you xbots are the filth of gaming community. Lets break down your nonsense. Starfield and Halo Infinite are a tremendous flops, Helldivers 2 a C tier Sony franchise outsold Starfield by 5x and has 5x more Content mconcurrent AND peak players than free to play Halo Infinite. So both are massive flops. 2. Exclusives are What matter. There are only 3 current Gen exclusives on Xbox. Starfield, Redfall and Hellblade 2. All disasters. Meanwhile PlayStation released more exclusives this year than Xbox and Nintendo combined. ALL GOTY nominees this year are on PS5 console exclusives only. Astrobot, FF7R, Black Myth Wukong, Helldivers 2 etc 3. Differentiation exclusives by 1st party is a fools errand when Xbox is sales begging their games on PlayStation. And the 3 current gen exclusives aren’t 1st party, they were BOUGHT OUT just like PS did with FF7R. Microsoft acquired Starfield, Redfall by cancelling ps5 versions. Hellblade was a ps4 exclusive. So Xbox has ZERO current gen 1st party console exclusives by your logic. Summary : PlayStation doesn’t get shit like xbox cos they deliver what matters, GAMES. Xbox has just given you cope for 13 years without any games, the only games they gave you this entire gen is just ps5 games they just bought out. Meanwhile PlayStation delivered ALL GOTY nominees on a single console, and more: Helldivers 2, FF7R, Rise of Ronin, Stellar blade , Astro Bot, Black Myth Wukong, Palworld etc neither PC nor consoles have ALL of this. So this is why youtubers don't talk about this because except for xbots this is obvious for anyone with a working brain. There's a reason why Xbox decided that the biggest exclusive Indiana Jones will only be a 3 month exclusive. I leave that to ur brain to figure out.
The difference is that Sony gained a massive advantage and good will during the ps4 generation, so much that people are willing to overlook most bad things they make. While Xbox have driven themselves into the ground losing all their identity over the years. That’s why people are super critical, especially when players are starved for good esclusive games on Xbox while PlayStation gets stuff like Spider-Man 2 .
these youtubers have no opinion themselves anymore. they have to jump on any train they can so they don't stand out. they're largely pathetic sheep just regurgitating the current online sentiment. they have to think about their ad revenue and nothing else.
Xbox Exclusives are a thing of the past. All their newest games go to PC and Game Pass day one, because God forbid they at least make some of them exclusives for a while and help the console sales, but no, its all about Game Pass for Microsoft.
Yeah, for sure I bought an Xbox series X thinking that I would be playing elder scrolls 6, fallout 5, and gears of war 6 but that hasn’t been the case as apparently as elder scrolls 6 is still a couple years away and fallout 5 is still on the to do list. Had I known that these games would not be coming out for many many years I probably would not have gone out and bought an Xbox series X at launch. I’ve maybe turned it on about three times this year to do some updates and play game or two but PS5 has been my go to to many of the current generation games and the Nintendo switch to play a lot of their great exclusives and other games.
The game that points me towards Xbox the most is Avowed. However, Xbox seems so uncertain now that getting one seems more like a risk. It's like they've forgotten the most important, most basic thing, that is good exclusive games sell consoles. When I think of buying an Xbox, I also think "if I buy a Ps5, I'll be able to play all the Sony games and almost every Xbox game, but the opposite is not true".
So many missed opportunities with every release. ReCore could've been amazing. Fable 3, Crackdown 2, Halo 5, all the way up to Redfall. Sony would send in a team to punch up every release and make sure it was amazing, but it seemed like XBox would just stay hands off and release it as a 7. 3-4 years in development and release a mid tier game instead of add the extra bit of fun.
You know there are Xbox Exclusives and also they announced a New Fable game and showed Gameplay but the people forget that the exclusives comes on PC too and All people say: "Hey Xbox has no exclusives because i can get it on PC" If it is so, why don't say the same about Sony? Because they doing the same but all big Media shut up and don't talk bad things about Sony!
you hit everything perfectly. Xbox has been making mid exclusives for years, they stopped money hatting games and then they wonder why people are not buying their consoles... Instead of facing the harsh reality that they have been making shit games. Their conclusion: lets continue making shit games but release them everywhere so at least we will make a bit more money. They will fail at this too because I'm willing to bet people won't be buying their games on playstation either because it comes back to the initial point: their games are not good enough. Indiana jones will flop the same as Starfield. Who decide to create an indiana jones in 1st person? Only Xbox would think its a smart move.
There are o many absolute banger exclusives on the original Xbox, and just as many if not more on the 360, and tons on the XBA digital platform, for OG XB, you have Conker Live & Uncut, Crazy Taxi 3, Grabbed By the Ghoulies, Toe Jam & Earl III, Shenmue II, Sega GT, Jet Set Radio Future, Phantom Crush, Blood Wake, Blinx 1 & 2, Breakdown, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge (love this game to bits), Phantom Crash, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Raze's Hell, Steel Battalion, Fusion Frenzy (one of the all-time best couch MP games ever made), Project Gotham Racing 1& 2, Otogi 1 & 2, I mean there are plenty more to add to that list, and even the third party games of the time were best played on the OG XB. And again for the 360, there are tons of exclusives, to many to list, the Japanese exclusives alone are amazing, the XBA exclusives, it's what made the 360 so special, add to that a brilliant online network with clear as day two-way voice over chat, the Xbox Indies platform, which had some gems like Miner Dig Deep, the first two Xbox's were fantastic, and in a way were a continuation of the Dreamcast, and built on what that had started, hard to believe Microsoft built all that, and destroyed it all in one generation, something that could be happening with Sony right now, then Nintendo has no competition, and we all know how not having competition ends.
Great video. The only thing I'd disagree with is about Starfield, it failed because it wasn't Skyrim in space. That's what everyone wanted but they gave us a universe full of empty barren planets and a tiny amount of gameplay. It was the anti Skyrim. I think Xbox's problems are too many executives and not enough creatives in charge.
I love the xbox hardware with quick resume and great local remote streaming, but this lack of exclusives makes it hard to think the next xbox would be a good decision over a PS or Nintendo console
Dude, that Phil quote drives me INSANE. When I heard I was just like, "Well you won't KNOW unless you try, dude!" Seriously, the back half of the 360 generation saw them decline, then the X1 generation saw them put out very nearly NOTHING, and this current generation has been hardly anything at all, and once they DID start putting out SOME games, they started putting them on other platforms anyways so who gives a shit? It's just wild. I remember when we got to the end of the X1 generation I looked back and thought about what the BEST exclusive was, because that's how I gauge the success of a platform. I look at what that system does that no other system can do, and at the time, it was the Ori games. No shade to them, obviously I LOVE them, but like... they should NOT have been the BEST exclusive titles in their library! In fact, now they no longer are, because they ended up going to the Switch! MS has just completely and utterly fumbled the bag when it comes to exclusives, with MOST of them just being like, "Okay, yeah. I liked that." AT BEST. I enjoyed Gears 4, but it was AMAZING or anything. The Halo games have been absolute Chaos. Crackdown 3... good god, I ADORE the original Crackdown, and it just hurts seeing what happened to that series. They basically have Forza as their most consistently good, high quality series, and that's about it. This MF'er really came out and said good games wouldn't shift the numbers like... bitch, maybe MAKE SOME and find out, huh?! Such a frustrating thing to hear...
For this mindset to have any legs inside of Xbox/Microsoft, it makes me think that the executives are in an echo chamber and not willing to listen to any feedback even within the company from lower-level employees. It’s so frustrating
I think the console wars is now between PlayStation and Nintendo. Shame that it’s not a three way as I had been a Sony kid growing up but chose, and enjoyed, the 360 generation before going to PS4.
Hello everyone.... I own all 3 major consoles....my ps5 gets use all the time, switch I play all the Nintendo og's mario,, metroid, etc....my Xbox series s and x is basically a digital movie library...
The ONLY exclusive Microsoft wants is an exclusive monopoly on games as a service/cloud gaming. Reason they undermine console hardware and buying games. Microsoft "You don't need an Xbox to play (not buy) Xbox games"
As a person who absolutely loves xbox especially the 360. Like xbox was absolutely my first ever console i bought myself. And even now i still try and get games on my xbox. Its just sad.
Switching to PlayStation and PC was the best thing I ever did. I used to love Xbox, but there’s nothing to love it for anymore. Halo is one of my favourite games and Microsoft have demonstrated how little they care for it anymore
Sony is capitalizing on those dumb moves again right now with Silent Hill 2. The games is the thing you need! Series X is super powerful, backward compatibility is amazing, its build with good ideas. But paying so much money just to play XBox 360 good old titles and watch movies in todays economy while waiting for GTA 6, thats just a dumb move. They want a hug from PS team while being eaten alive by them.
This is really sad I agree. The Series X is a fantastic machine and there’s just no reason to play it most of the time. When I do use it for extended periods of time I really enjoy it and fondly remember how awesome they were during the 360 days.
I like having a dedicated gaming device. Microsoft has lost that crowd. They've diversified everything to everything. I don't see them going back, or even being able to go back at this point. Until you made this video, I didn't know whether I should buy a PS5 or an Xbox, but it's obvious that if I want a console for people who like consoles, PS5 is the obvious choice. Love your videos!
I bought ps5 for exclusives, but ended up getting a job where I'm gone from home Monday through Friday, and the ps5 is just too big and bulky to try and bring with me every week. So I bought a series s, with an XScreen attachment and I can bring it everywhere with me. It works really well for multiplatform games, but I do still wish I had my ps5 with me instead. I just think they didn't really give the console design ANY thought this generation. And don't anyone come at me with "BUY A STEAMDECK" I did and hated it. The battery sucked, the games didn't play all that well, and the drm for some of the games was annoying as hell especially when you can't connect to hotel wifi so drm can check to see if you own the game. I prefer switch for handhelds and now my series s for console gaming on the go.
Wow I clicked upon seeing Wood and suddenly I saw comments saying congratulations on the new channel. Then I saw the channel name, ohhhh...it is a new channel! Didn't know haha, congrats Wood. Subscribed.
The issue was for literally 10+ years gamers have been begging and begging companies to allow play of their games on any system of their choice. Akin to other media like music, movies, books, literally almost everything else being available on any brands device. Xbox took that desire and made it real, while the other 2 main companies never really even tried. This has single handledly pushed xbox back, the other studios dont wanna play. You can listen to a random frank sinatra song from the 40s on your computer, phone, car, tons of options. But you can only play ToTK on a switch, no other device. Its backwards in comparison to other forms of media and I think xbox and many gamers wanted that to change. But now just shit on xbox for doing so. But yes they still need to make better games from their studios in general.
I got a Series X, and enjoy it frequently. I didn't care about anything from Playstation until my brother gave me his PS4. I had some games for it, but I wasn't interested until I played Spider-Man. I don't hate my Xbox now, but I'd be down to get a PS5 just to play those games.
I've had XBOX ever since xbox came out, i had a PS1 prior to that, and only now in 2024 am i about to buy the new PS5 PRO 1. mostly due to exclusives and 2. a more powerful system. sad but i can hear the sony library screaming at me to get one, the last of us, spiderman, god of war and plenty of others.
Im not a console exclusive fan either but i know its a necessary thing to keep the console relevant, ive been an all time xbox fan and ive turned on my series x once when i bought it on release to play... ninja gaiden 2
I often wonder if Xbox will just become a streaming app. A Netflix. We stop calling gamepass gamepass and it just becomes xbox. I wonder if they'll give up on consoles and focus on getting an Xbox app as functional as Netflix so in their eyes they win the idea of being in every home. An idea that goes back to why they started competing in the market in the 1st place. So all you'll need do is subscribe to a service, maybe buy a controller, (maybe theyll finally add a chargable battery as default) and then turn on your tv and xbox is there, and the more devices you want to play on the more they can charge for the subscription. I also wonder, if this is the future of Xbox (just a streaming service) the next generation could become a massive fork in the road for all 3 systems makers and gaming in general. Nintendo could very well migrate fully to handheld and never look back with switch 2 or 3. Xbox could fully migrate to a streaming app subscription model and never look back. Doubling down on a digital frontier. Leaving Sony, the only home console maker left. Or they'll all keep making consles for the home market and im completly wrong! 😅
That's the future - for BOTH Sony and MS. Next gen will be the last physical hardware either makes. It'll be unsubsidized and expensive. And if you think Sony is going to spend billions developing a physical console that isn't going to sell, I have a bridge in Brooklyn I'd like to sell. That virtual future is why MS isn't worried about console sales. Its a dead end. What use is bragging about console sales if there are no consoles?
I need to bust out the 360 again honestly.

@@darryljack6612 11:45
He is saying exclusives matter, that's why he asked us what we thought on the matter and on exclusives as a whole
Xbox is moving away because their exclusives haven't been hitting the same since the 360, xbox is moving away from exclusives because they embraced the pc market, xbox is moving away from exclusives because they don't even particularly care about their own console since they put EVERY game on pc AND putting their Gamepass on other platforms.

You then look at Bungie, at Lionhead, at Ensemble, Aces Games Studios… they either no longer exist or dont work for Xbox anymore but their IPs have continued: Halo, Fable, Age of Empires, Microsoft Flight Simulator
It gives the impression to me that Xbox doesnt care who makes the games, as long as the IPs they care about can get continued to be made under their logo.

Plaground games, Forza Horizons and now Fable
Your point means nothing if its supposed to be some winning stance.. most studios get to work on passion projects or get told to work on a game by who ever owns them..
None of these studios had to get Xbox’s approval about what they wanted to make prior to their acquisition
Maybe Xbox is starting to realize better that they have to work on cultivating their teams but you’re also talking about IPs here that are not super popular like the Playstation ones i mentioned.
Xbox has bn able to acquire IPs and talent behind those IPs, but historically they have not bn able to sustain the talent if the talent wished to stray away from those IPs

@@darryljack6612it's called a hybrid , I do agree with everything else you say though 👍
Xbox literally has more users than Playstation, what are you talking about? Is this another "console sales" antiquated take?
"They more or less just got lucky that their main competition was failing so hard", we could say the same thing about the ps4 vs Xbox One.
Xbox 360 was infinite times better than PS3
@@deiradinn Ok maybe i am stupid and i don´t understand the superior logic here . Xbox have more users than Playstation but Playstation sell more consoles and more people are playing in a Playstation console , but Xbox have more users . I really need the thing that you are drinking dude it´s good really good .
I was super happy to find out you have another channel 😊!
I have both series x and ps5 and wish I had more of a reason to turn on the Xbox. Microsoft needs a new CEO.
And, since it's fully backwards compatible I've been clearing out tons of old 360 games I never got around to playing.
you can play gamepass on PC.
It's also not fully backward compatible as I find l found out sadly last weekend 😢
@@SteddiFLothe first two games are also on Playstation.
@@shayanali8771 yea you right but this guy talking about he chose Xbox over PS5. I'm like what other games you play?

Now with Acivision, i can't see Microsoft leaving the game dev business, however i can't see them staying as a console holder. I mean, look at those Xbox sales numbers.
Having one good exclusive game helps move systems, but honestly, one isn't enough. Most people aren't plunking down several hundred bucks to play a single game. You need a few good exclusives for it to be worthwhile purchase for most people.
Hell blade 2 was soooooo goooooood. It's a very slept on game. As a fan of the origonal life is strange I loved this game.
I was on leave in the last week and decided to play Halo 3 on the Master Chief collection on my Xbox Series X. I finished the campaign today, and wow. Love it.
I have a PS5 and a PC. I kept the PS5 primarily for physical games, but Sony is moving away from physical so I’m slowly moving my library to Steam
People will see this situation and still say the PS5 has no games
At some point during the ABK deal, Satya bent Phil over his desk and gave him the Indian Dry Rub. After the clean up, he told Phil that they are transforming into a game publisher.
They might benefit from adapting Nintendo's ideology of non-compete
But anyway, it's Microsoft, it's not the end of the world for them
I bailed out in 2019 from Xbox because of this reason. I came back to PlayStation. Xbox, to me is just Netflix for games. They had a good thing going with the OG Xbox with their exclusives and a HDD out of the box with internet capabilities. My 300,000+ gamerscore has been sitting dormant ever since.
Xbox has a problem they either focus too much on nostalgia or focus too much on graphics and forget about story and gameplay
Playing Halo coop on the orginal xbox with the duke controller was peak gaming.
People are really pissed with Sony right now because of all the PS5 Pro and HZD remaster stuff (myself included). If Phil Spencer doesn't see this as a big opportunity for the next generation of Xbox, then he really should quit the job.
You know what sucks the most , the only people who will suffer from no competition in the console and game exclusivity space is going to be us the consumer because the companies won't have a need to try and make better more affordable and quality games or consoles since there is no one to compete with
Thus we see PlayStation testing how far they can push prices both on hardware and software
Can see a lot of 90s SEGA style of decisions in Xbox these days and we know how that ended up 😢
Might still upgrade to a Series X but just because i prefer the vibe of the hole Xbox family when to decide where to play 3rd party games.
I never had an Xbox but was tempted by Starfield. I've been waiting for other exclusives because I'm not buying a console for one game.
He did say pretty much the exact opposite though...

Phil should be fired. He should collect his pay check and be cut loose.
Let's be real, Xbox had one good console
This whole situation is feels like xbox betraying their fanbase that spent their hard earned money on their consoles by just giving up…
Physical media is a big deal for me. So I will continue to buy consoles till the physical media is gone or not an option.
The 360 had such great Xbox exclusives especially in the shooter genre like Gears of War and Halo. I miss those days. It makes Xbox as a brand stand out from everyone else so I don’t understand why they would want to pivot away from that.
To see the ceo have such a loser-mentality…as Yoda said, “that is why you fail”.
My Xbox just sits and collects dust. At least it's nondescript sitting on my media cabinet behind my TV.
Notice how he's talking about Xbox having no games instead of pl-
Bro xbox has no games. At least, sony have released some exclusive which is far less compared to their actual standard but xbox is completely shit
It’s insane that anyone would say exclusive games don’t sell consoles. So Mario never sold consoles? Zelda never sold consoles?
0:29 Phil is right, it's too late in this generation for it to matter...if they made 5 straight bangers, like 9/10+ games within a 2yr span... they still won't catch up to Sony...they need to do something radical to compete.
That's why we don't have any good games right there
The second gears of war E day releases I will be buying an Xbox, gears will always make me buy an Xbox, but they are 4 years into a generation at the moment and I’m no where near getting the console, such a shame
Astrobot, FF7R, Black Myth Wukong, Helldivers 2 etc
Starfield is a flop lmaoo
Sony would send in a team to punch up every release and make sure it was amazing, but it seemed like XBox would just stay hands off and release it as a 7. 3-4 years in development and release a mid tier game instead of add the extra bit of fun.
current gen is so slow to release anything triple A it just raises the risks and cost of failure so high and it's just flop after flop
How are they gonna say that knowing it worked in the past with their older consoles 😒… doesn’t make sense to me
I agree Xbox is not the same anymore and lost their ways in gaming.
I love my Xbox Series S. Admittedly... If it wasn't for Game Pass and a below £300 price point... I may have bought a PS5
Even if they don’t got exclusive games is it still worth me buying an Xbox?
Hello everyone.... I own all 3 major consoles....my ps5 gets use all the time, switch I play all the Nintendo og's mario,, metroid, etc....my Xbox series s and x is basically a digital movie library...
I have never touched an Xbox in my life so I’m not even in this conversation, I’ve been PlayStation kid for the longest time
The ONLY exclusive Microsoft wants is an exclusive monopoly on games as a service/cloud gaming.
Finally, not just Nintendo content from you! Keep this stuff going :D
Nintendo defined exclusives actually, Microsoft just shits ok Sony because they are beating them in the same weight class.
