Part 17: Rebuilt Engine First Start + Engine Install

  • In this episode, we cover a lot of ground. We start off by welding up part of the exhaust, then Zach installs the clutch, and we drop the engine into the bay. Once it's in place, we connect all the wiring, install the alternator, and pour in zinc heavy oil to start the break-in process. Since proper break-in is important, we make sure that the oil circulates throughout the engine before start up. We get the fan and pulleys into place, install the radiator, then find that the thermostat housing is leaking. After some trial and error, we get a new thermostat filler neck installed, and we are back on track. We connect the battery and it's time for first start. Unfortunately, it doesn't go quite as planned. After some trial an error, we figure out that we have a grounding problem and that the carb needs some gas in the bowls. With that fixed, it's time for start-up -- for real this time. The engine fires right up, we rejoice, and that's all you get for now. But don't worry, we've got more coming.

      Haha thanks. I always wonder what kind of person dislikes a video. If I don't like something I just stop watching it.

    Out of curiosity, what made you decide to stick with the factory engine, instead of dropping in a bigger motor like a 460 while you are at it?

    • @TheBadTimingClub
      @TheBadTimingClub  4 года назад +4

      Not really sure. It was the middle of winter so we didnt want to try to pull something from the junk yard, and there was not a budget for a crate motor. We knew our block was good so it was just a safe bet.

      Depends on what your gonna use the truck for, I drive my 78 f150 daily so I wouldn’t drop a big 460 in it

    • @TheRoadhammer379
      @TheRoadhammer379 4 года назад +1

      For what you are doing with the truck, 351w is a fine engine. Pulling a camper or large trailer might necessitate a 460 but the Windsor will do all you need. My one 97 F350 has a 351w and average mpg is 12 compared to my 460 at 7mpg. Windsor was a great choice for you.

      Insanely reliable those 351w , i own a few, just replacing crap when it breaks ,cheaper than 460 parts,better gas ,mine is my daily, 466 thousand miles son

    Let me know how the cam is, especially after a overhaul you need to break that cam in for at least 20 minutes, unless you put a roller cam in.

    where did you buy all of your parts? I have a 351m that i will be removing and might need some new parts

      Rockauto is great if you can plan out your build and put an order in ahead of time, but we also hit up autozone a bunch for last-minute stuff that we didn't realize we would need. LMC is good for harder time find stuff too but they are not the cheapest.
