I've watched many knee videos, but am I glad I found you!! Tomorrow I'm 7 weeks out and been getting discouraged despite excellent physical therapists and surgeon. Everything you said described my situation perfectly 🥰. I don't know how to thank you for being so clear and concise to us patients going through this. I love my surgeon, but wish you were my Doc!!!
between the 4 months pre-op and post-op I've been watching YT videos THIS has been the best I have been able to relate to. Doc, everything you covered pertained to my experience. Most of all, you kept on saying "this is normal" it doesn't always stay this way. Thank You
My TKR was April 18 & being 6-weeks & 2- days out, wish I was told the truth on what to expect with this surgery! It truly is so difficult, painful, & debilitating! The hypersensitivity, zings & shocks, bruising & swelling, and the hot knee, it was so scary! Then there is the PT=pain & torture.... OMG! Major is the correct word, not the sugar coating I was told!
They really should be more realistic about what it’s like. I went to pre-op “Joint-Camp” that didn’t talk at all about the horror that is the first month. I was discharged fourteen hours post op after a revision from Partial to TKR. The pain relief the first week was totally inadequate. It used to be you spent five days in the hospital with either an epidural, continuous pain block, and PCA IV narcotics. I’m four months post-op and moving along well. I had the pre-op cryoablation a month prior and it was very painful, plus the numbness only lasted 36 hrs. IIt’s a good surgery, you just have to measure your progress by the week, not the day. My surgeon now says it takes eighteen months to recover. They really have to inform patients what they can expect, and not treat it like you’re going to church camp.😮😮
I’m six weeks out today. I’ve been sleeping well for a couple of weeks. I do feel tired by mid afternoon and take a short nap. I did 30 min on the elliptical machine at the gym this past weekend. I’m walking each evening. Still feels tight after sitting for a while.
Best and most practical TKR recovery info I have seen online yet. This is right on the money. TKR recovery is a mission all the way around. Thanks Dr. Wickline
I am so glad to have found your video. I was feeling defeated and depressed by my by symptoms. They matched everything you described, giving me peace of mind and encouragement. Thank you so very much.
Great video, Doctor...... for me, your explanation of how proteins contribute to the swelling makes so much sense and I am relieved and won't worry about the tightness and swelling as much thanks to your video........
Hi Doc. Thank you for sharing the information i needed to hear. You hit all the major points. Today is my 7 weeks out and my 6 weeks follow up is on May 31. I am still experiencing pain at night and i am so afraid to sleep when the night falls. But then i am able to alternating my feet when ascending and descending stairs at 5 weeks. My problem now is my right knee. It is completely a deja vu! i have to go back to have it done which i am NOT looking forward to it. The pain got me!!!
Great info, sleep is a nightly “tragedy”, up 2-4 times each night. Few surgeons tell the real story, sleep is a disaster each night, only patches of sleep. I was so happy to go from up 4 times a night to up only twice a night, but still with pain-take tylenol before bed, and get 2-3 hiurs, then up, then 1/2 hrs. then up again, then last short sleep. Gruesome, but slightly improved sleep this week.
Thank you so much for your advice. You have just described my tkr journey. I am on week 8 and have been so discouraged up to this point. Seeing my physical therapist tomorrow and will share my concerns with her. Thank you again.
4 weeks past surgery and this is the first video that mimicked nearly everything I am feeling. Now I know some of the questions I will have for my surgeon. Thank you.
Hi. I'm from NYC. I had my TOTAL knee replacement surgery on August 9, 2022. I'm experiencing a lot of what you mentioned in your video. Now I understand why. Thank you so very much.
Wow! I am so glad I came upon this video. I am 6 week post op, at 5 weeks I had to go into the hospital and have my knee manipulated. I go to P.T. twice a week, and do my exercises 2 - 3 times a day. I still am only able to bend it to about 80 degrees when sitting.
Have just watched your video it has eased all my anxieties I am 8 week tnr still in pain still painful to sleep and the clicking really worried me but watching your video has explained it all thank you so much.
I am 5 weeks post knee op sleep is not great been doing physio knee still stiff thank you for sharing this video you are so right about all the symptoms glad I found your video
You are spot on regarding what the TKR patient can expect to feel at the 6 wk mark. I'm only at the 4 wk mark and now I'm more prepared for my journey to full recovery in around a years time. Slow steps but moving toward the best shape my knee has been in for 20 yrs. I see a bright light at the end of the TKR surgery tunnel.🙏
Thank you Dr!! This is one of the best anxiety- lessening videos!! I'm now 6 weeks after double partial replacement and I've got that band pain around the right knee and I'm not walking properly!! But now I hope to get there soon without panicking!!
Superb summary of the status at this point and explanations of the weird stuff that goes off...nerves zinging into life for no apparent reason. Very reassuring, thank you so much.
This was so comforting. Phew, I’m doing alright. Sleep is sometimes absent, and my body temperature seems to swing between too hot and too cold at night. This is my second knee replaced, starting 3 months after the first one was replaced. The swelling was less, but the pain more longer lasting at the hellish level this time. Odd. My theory is having both knees still healing means the pain is cumulative. My symptoms can be wildly variable: agony one day and better the next. It’s hard to exercise and not overdo it, creating more inflammation and pain. I see my surgeon tomorrow for the 6 week check-up, and this video has given me some good ideas about how to prepare for the visit. Thank you!
Best post op video I’ve watched. I could relate to everything you talked about. I’m on week 6 , actually my sleep has been normal since week 2, but the fatigue I’m experiencing had me worried. Your explanation was great…..Thank you Dr
Thank you Doctor! You hit it right on the money 😊! Thank you for explaining all these issues, exactly what’s happening to me right now! Great video Dr. Thank you
That was so helpful. I am only 4 weeks after surgery tomorrow afternoon and I admit I am not a patient person. I am 73. This was really the first surgery I have ever had except for meniscus tear/bone spur on the same knee about 8 years ago. Since then I have done steroid shots, artificial cartilage, even stem cell injections hoping to avoid surgery. Tightness and trouble sleeping are my main issues. I drove at two weeks. It is my left leg. Was given Percocet but didn’t need much. I am strong and active. One mistake I made was having home health care the first three weeks. They were always complimenting me and pleasant to chit chat with but they certainly didn’t push me as far as exercise. Now I am at a good PT location three times a week. Darned if I didn’t break a tooth about two days after surgery. It is not painful but it is an upper left canine tooth so I am starting the process of getting a bridge made tomorrow. I will take the medicine my knee doctor wants me to but could put it off. It doesn’t look very nice when I smile but of course I am more concerned about my knee than my vanity. Carole
Thank you for saying everything that I'm going through at 6 weeks is normal and that I'm not going to have great range of motion and that Physical Therapy is still painful but I'm doing it so I can heal. I needed to know where I should be in my recovery.
Hello Dr. O'Brien, your video is great. As a recent patient of TKR, your 6-weeks video answered every question had regarding my knee pain and where I should be in my recovery. Thanks to your informative video I now feel much better about my progress. I look forward to seeing more of your videos as I progress through my journey.
Great info. You really explain what exactly is going on in there. I have searched for detailed understanding of what is physiologically going on in there. Thank you.
Thank you Dr Andrew, so glad that l watched the video, l am at the six week post op date today, feeling great only issue is sleep however as you mentioned things should get easier in the next few weeks. I am 75 ex military so quite fit, currently swimming, on an Exercycle five times a week plus hitting about 15,000 steps a day walking. Today l had a dental hygienist appointment they gave me some tablets prior so hoping everything is okay, guess l should have cancelled the appointment just to be safe, my mistake. Thanks for the video it certainly helps as a guide to my progression after surgery.😊😊
7:15 to bad I didn’t see youre video, people skill’s you have my friend. It’s always good to hear that my condition at 4 weeks is quite good, 68 and very serious gravel bike cyclist I was surprised to see my left quadriceps to be that much a sleep. I’m at more then 110 degrés so steps 5 inch have started and my saddle is down to my regular height. The hardest getting from the toilet…strength at more then 10p degrees is not there yet. If only I could translate youre video in French, thank you sir for youre calm and inspiring explanations. I had a total knee replacement by navigation ROBOT. COULD BE THE REASON
Cheers Doc, great info, l am four weeks today post RKR, all is going really well, now walking well up to 10,000 steps per day also now driving the only short fall for is my sleeping getting the odd hour or two in at nights however that will come good soon. Totally pleased that l had the op. Forget to mention l am a male aged 75 years old. Thanks for the info.
I'm using an ice machine. The feeling that my skin's splitting is lessening but I put moisturizer on either side of the incision. I have a range of motion of 108 degrees. I need one crutch unless just hobbling around the house. I guess everything is normal but I haven't started outpatient PT yet due to scheduling.
I have suffered with RA since I was 37. I have no cartilage in both knees, and all the symptoms you have described I am going through at this time. I am waiting for my referral to see an orthopedic surgeon, and I hope it helps. I walk straight hocks, and use my lower back too much. Thank you for your video
Thank you. I'm at 4 weeks today and this alleviates a lot of my concern, explained so I easily understand. Looking forward to my 6-week visit on Hallowe'en.
@@prestonphelps1649that’s what I think. After a lifetime of dangerous sports I am well used to pain and what I’ve felt in the 3 weeks since my TKR isn’t at all bad. Also, I was walking unaided on day 2 and driving day 5. ROM is 110 degrees. Level of fitness is obviously a factor too.
Thank you for such a great video. I am four week right now getting into my fifth week in a lot of things that you explain answers several questions that I was having to myself. I am very very good video. Thank you, Doctor.
Hi Doc... glad to have come across ur video clip... am 1 month after Tkr surgery right knee. Plse advise if am still to continue with physio as started fm 2nd day after ops. I can walk slowly. At night is the worst time... but hanging there.. at the moment am taking Zyrtal MR twice a day. Plse advise further exercises after 1mth.

Best 6 week description. My symptoms to a T. Glad to know it's normal. I'm 100% glad I had the procedure.
