35:11 that sounds like an amazing commander clash episode. everyone gets secretively or maybe even openly given another player who you need to make the winner, the irony being that that person doesn't want to win because he wants someone else to win.

Divine intervention makes me want to see a magic card with text that reads something along the lines of "if the game would end in a draw you win instead." And have the flavor of a peace negotiation.

  • @MissingNovice
    @MissingNovice 2 года назад +7

I wrote a huge post on reddit a while back about how Divine Intervention essentially says 'you win the game' and a bunch of spikes raged that 'no, you draw because it says you draw.'
From a philosophical standpoint though, you don't. A draw is when all the players are in a forced stalemate, or they all agree to walk away. If one player unilaterally has the ability to declare the game a draw without the other players consent, that defeats the idea of what a draw even is. The play patterns are identical to other timed wincons like Approach of the Second Sun. You play it, the game is put on a clock until a thing happens, and you protect yourself while the rest of the table does everything in their power to stop the thing from happening - and when the thing happens, the game ends on your terms. Nobody is about to let Divine Intervention resolve because 'its a draw.' They're gonna throw everything they can at stopping it and winning the game themselves... and if Divine Intervention walks like a wincon and talks like a wincon... IMO its a wincon.
Now there's a bit of a grey area if that means other forced draws like a polyraptor combo count as a wincon. I don't quite feel it does since it dosn't have the same level of mechanical intention as Divine Intervention, but you could argue it is, and if you walk away from the game feeling like you won, it functionally would be. Divine Intervention just stands out to me as a strange case, since it claims to force the game to be a draw while simultaneously defying what it means to draw in the first place.

34:16 - I love this take by Seth, because it encourages a whole different mindset in commander that isn't just straight hyper focused on winning. Some people have an objective to do in the game and if they do that, they win in their mind. It isn't about eliminating the other players. I believe it's Olivia Goebert-Hicks that has a deck where she just wants to deck herself. Not even with a lab maniac win con out. Just lose the game as fast as possible. When she does that, she "wins". I think this mindset needs to be encouraged more. So yes, I think if you have a deck built around divine intervention and you pull it off, even though the card says it's a draw, you did your thing and you win. The draw only matters in tournaments.

I think I'm a huge Johnny player. Maybe Johnny with a bit of spike. I personally look at commander and how interesting it is, and how many unique cards I will get to play in them, how to abuse its ability and generate as much value as possible. I often than struggle to realize how to actually win. So usually my decks end up having some combo or one card oneshot in them. Prime example of this has to be my Osgir which is a deck that basically mimics Simic. Tons of ramp, tons of draw. Then I realized I have noway to win, so I just jammed into Mystic forge into Obelisk + walking balista combo. It is not the most satisfying way to win, but the rest of the deck is so sweet and I enjoy it a lot.

I've resolved a few inkshields and it's definitely a fun wincon. Like Crim said, you hold up the mana when you have some threats deployed and it's such a powerful effect if you do get attacked. If the mana gets wasted then oh well because you've still got these threats deployed. You can usually see when some kind of attack is coming and it's surprisingly easy to get a lot of inklings since you'll choose to not do any blocking. Swings for 10+ are common in the later stages of the game and at that time a board of 20+ power fliers will easily kill people. As Tomer said, you untap and kill people before they even had time to respond! Even an attack of 5 damage on you is 10 power of fliers, which is huge.
It's a very powerful card I'd recommend for any orzhov deck. Only times it's not as good are in meta's where people aren't winning with combat damage. Otherwise, it's one of the strongest things to repeatedly hold up in the later stages of the game because unless they have a board clear to play right after, you'll be killing them.
I'm glad it's orzhov, so it's not played everywhere. Otherwise it might get old quite quickly because it causes very sudden swings. I can imagine some people getting bitter about that.

My favorite wincon is Possessed Portal. It might look like a stax card but the game pretty much ends as soon as it resolves. It eats through boards and hands like it's nothing and if you opponents didn't have removal they are never going draw it either.
You can play portal in all kinds of decks. Token decks, reanimator decks, aristocrat decks etc. You can do whacky stuff like play tibalt and have impulse draw fuel you or cast a big blue sun zenith and hope your hand is bigger than their boardstate.

I feel like what often gets missed with Inkshield is that its best home is in Aristocrats. So you don't necessarily need to be holding up 5 lands, you just need sac fodder for Ashnods Altar, Phyrexian Altar, Pitiless Plunderer. Usually your deck has some other treasure generators as well.
Then not only are you generating a large army to swing with in the air, you also have more sac fodder for mana, life drain, card draw, etc.

Hellkite Tyrant is a fun one as it has if you have 20 or more artifacts at the beginning of your upkeep you win the game. Well more fun if Dockside is not in the deck as treasures are artifacts and if you have a infinite bounce loop you can just bounce Dockside and get enough treasures then cast Hellkite Tyrant and a extra turn spell and win without a chance for the opponents to deal with it. Obviously this will be better and easier the higher power you go as fast mana artifacts while abundant in 8's will be rampant in 9's and 10's so the win con unless the opponents counter spell with a free counter or low mana one has a high chance to happen, in fact a single cast of Dockside might be enough to do it without looping him and usually no one counters him the first time unless they know it is going for the win con even if they know he casues problems when resolves as they rather wait till they think it is a threat like someone going to pop off for a win or target their combo piece/hurt their own plan so they save the counter magic like proes.

Just for the record, you would need 14 dice increasing effects to have even a 50% chance of getting a 20.
As far as I'm aware, the only ways to roll an extra die are barbarian class, pixie guide, and Wyll blade of frontiers. Wyll is legendary, so let's ignore getting multiple copies of him. There are lots of cards which can make many copies of creatures, but relatively few which make copies of enchantments, so you would really need to make 14 copies of your pixie guide. Empty your hand, hit the 50/50, then do it again the next two turns. Pretty sure I'd rather just Delina twin them out.

[Edit (i shouldn't comment before seeing the whole thing)]: An even sweeter version of the Nine-lifes combo (though not possible in Zedruu) is Phage, the Untouchable + Fractured Identity. :D
With the Ashiok, Doomsday, Hive Mind Combo: Remember to always use Ashiok's ability first. He prevents opponents from searching their library, not the graveyard, so your opponents can still assemble something out of there.
And adding to the Capsize discussion: Unless Capsize is involved in creating the infinite Mana (e.g. with Dockside), i see the infinite Mana combo as the finisher, not Capsize... What you actually spend your Mana on doesn't really matter, as long as you can spend it.

I prefer The Great Aurora over Warp World, it's easier to cast a big clunky spell in Green, and neither is doing much to protect the spell. I run it in a Simic deck that uses it as a solution to any permanent that resists solving via my other 'removal' options (usually theft or bounce), but I added in a Forbidden Orchard to serve as a win con with it, since I can infinitely tap it I can draw out all my opponents via one casting.
Coat of Arms is a bonkers card if you just play it out, I totally feel like you only use it when you've got a big enough board to just win off of. I got a few so-so cards out of the dispenser, our store tried to throw in mostly playable stuff when they had extra that wasn't moving, but I did see a place where they literally had Vanishing as the 'chase' card. Ironic at the time I couldn't see why it was actually a really good card, but I don't think anyone else thought it was all that good than either, it's very situational.
If you're gonig to spend +7 mana to wipe/recur, you might look at Necromantic Selection, which is dirt cheap for a very powerful effect, and it's all on the one card. Thrilling Encore seems like you mostly are hoping someone else's wipe to follow up with this, at which point you win on your next turn hopefully. Unless you can count on triggering it (IE have +5 ways to wipe the board for little or no mana, and it has to be a graveyard based wipe), it will often sit in your hand and do nothing I suspect, and TBH how many decks actually run +5 cheap wipes yet lack a better win con? At it's best, this is still dependent on your opponent's having a board, but also having a board that can die, which is a big ask usually. In the right group it'll be a huge bomb, in the wrong meta it'll stink up the room.
I think I have a deep distaste for PWs in 1v1, but they are less awful in 4 player. I will say I 200% disagree with Crim, PWs are the worst thing that's ever happened to Magic, 15 years of removal/wipes suddenly cried out in terror as they were obsoleted, meanwhile WotC doesn't print any good ways to deal with them until after they've printed Oko, PWs are piles of dog doo that should go away in 1v1, but in 4 player they suck because they just die all the time, which is cool. In 1v1 any PW that doesn't actively suck is usually incredibly good, offering a mountain of value if a deck can't technically deal with the PW, and most of the better PWs are considered that because they are able to deal with an existing board reasonably well. Do I run PWs? A few here and there, but I don't run many, and I don't foresee myself running Superfriends, but I do have decks that use PWs as win cons.
So, just read up on Divine Intervention, if you Clockspinning someone they get to eat poo unless they can put another counter on it, that is so much better than destroying or exiling this. Note, I think this would be pretty salty, but in Casual I feel like you probably should be fine with a Rule 0 talk about your deck's goal, and if you actually are pushing to achieve that Draw, it should count for something (maybe?), perhaps an alternative solution to the puzzle.
My deck that uses The Great Aurora also uses Capsize, as both removal and a wincon. I love Capsize so, so much, even when all I can do is cast it 3 times with Buyback until I draw something better, that still can be hilarious.
I enjoy using Thieves' Auction as an alternate wincon of sorts, the deck tries to delay and wipe until something worth taking comes out, then it hopes to get it somehow, ironically not a Blue deck. I'm trying out Stax as an alternate wincon in a Boros Weenie deck, we'll see if Stax and 3 sides wipes can be the backbone of a Weenie deck. I like wincons that aren't the 'optimal' one, though I sometimes try to arrange a situation when what is normally optimal ceases to be.

I have a The Deck of Many Things deck with Eruth, Tormented Prophet! I use artifact tutors to find The Deck of Many things and I use Eruth to make sure my hand never has cards in it, but I still have tons of card draw. Since I'm in Izzet, I use all the dice rolling advantage cards to increase my chances. I have played the deck a fair bit, but I haven't rolled a nat 20 yet. I have rolled a nat 19 and drew a counterspell to stop a Grixis deck from ending the game with Thassa oracle once. The funny thing is that I've only won with beating people down with creatures like Delina, Farideh, and Laelia.

Crim's cheeky definition of casual commander is really frustrating to me. No, casual (or real) Commander isn't about not playing to win, it's about winning with fun decks rather than the cEDH spike mentality of turning it into a turn 2 format. I know that cEDH/spike players view casual players with scorn because they don't all play consultation/thoracle combos and play colours other than blue, but casual Commander is what the format should be - a variety of decks, being able to play cards that cost more than 4 mana, and having fun with new and exciting interactions. Dumbing it down to "casual commander is about not trying to win" is insulting to what the format is meant to be. Okay, rant over :D

The guy I was trying to kill tutored for baleful mastery the first time so he unfortunately did not die but it stopped his win (I did this in response to him ulting Tevash Zhat as a hail mary to prevent him from winning) , the next turn I untapped rolled a 20 and sac’d to my now untapped phyrexian tower, this time choosing to kill the tiamat player! I did not win this game, and yet I walked away a winner.

My favorite win con that I've pulled off in a commander game has been Dragonstorm. I managed to win outright with it 2 ways, once I played Mana Geyser and copied it with Reiterate for infinite mana, then cast it with the mana (in a mono red deck so pulling off the 3 card combo for 11 mana was a huge feels good) and the other time was I had it under a Spinerock Knoll and someone else stormed off and was about to kill the table, and as soon as someone took the 7 damage I used the Knoll to flash Dragonstorm and my dragon ETBs won me the game.

I would like a new cast member who started playing MTG More Recently and started with Commander!

Technically divine intervention in 5 or more people formats, only affects those within 1 seat. Do to the "in range" ruling of some formats. So if you can manage to give this to an opponent then make that opponent give it away farther away, you can force everyone NOT you to draw, and with plat angel, you dont lose, and you arent affected by the "draw" effect sooo.... you win :)

I always try to build decks with control win cons that if you seen my decks you wouldn't know what the wincon is... things like looping cards to lock the game out. Or looping reality shift and exileing there deck. It takes allot of set up but once the table figures out what you are doing they normally scoop. But I try to win with cards you normally wouldn't counter or exile... like turning a single lightning bolt into a grapeshot...
