So many bittersweet memories with this song. I basically listened to this album on repeat when my mom was in the ICU diagnosed with an inoperable malignant brain tumor and given a month at best to live. This song always brings me back to waking up early on the hospital room benches while she was still asleep, putting my headphones in and listening to Diary front to back while walking through the hospital and across the street in the chilly morning weather to buy us both a coffee from a nearby cafe. She's been gone for a while now, and Diary always makes me think of her, but there are a lot of pleasant feelings that come with all the melancholy at the same time. Music is a crazy thing.
💗🙏
Sorry ❤️
So sorry to hear that. Wish you all the best and a happy live from my whole heart. It's really hard to see someone go we love.
I felt this
Skipped school to drive to Nashville to see them! 1997....pushed my way to the front and got a guitar pick, still have it!! Love sunnyday
So sick!
That must be an awesome memory!
HELL YEAH
Oh yes OK HOTEL!!! MISS IT! I SAW THEM THERE TOO! I THINK 94 or5!!
Where was the Nashville show? I saw them at 328 in 2000. Their 1999 328 set is posted here.
Holy shit this sounds so much newer than 1993. This is a blueprint for SO many 2000s emo and also math rock bands
Yeah, Gerard Way was apparently inspired, but since he didn't have the technical skill, he replaced all the cool math-rocky stuff with power chords...
They were so good so early in their career and way ahead of their time. Jeremy’s vocals man. Searing, gentle, whatever in between. How these guys don’t have books written about them is beyond me.
exactly
Emo sucks and they are its King. It should be entirely forgotten.
@@GunsNBudder wrong
@@GunsNBudder just because your parents faked their death to get the fuck away from you doesn't mean you need to be an ignorant asshole clown
@@GunsNBudder Sounds like you suck. 'Emo' as these dudes slow-coring up rites of springs fucking rules. 'Diary' leading to a thousand awful bands leaning into the cringiest parts of the record absolutely sucks.
they have some pretty epic A-ha animation moments

It’s crazy to think this song was recorded in 1993! It honestly sounds like something that would have been released by an alternative/emo band in the late 2000s. SDRE was definitely ahead of their time!
Es de 1994 ...creo....y si es muy moderna la verdad el sonido🤘🤘🤘🤘😎
Them and Christie Front Drive, Mineral, and Indian Summer
They inspired almost all emo after them
No
@@EMOtiveHXC Jawbreaker was more influential and came years before. SDRE is great but they’re a descendant of JB.
52 years old here. How time flies when you're drunk and high...

Shout to my old buddies growing up from 1993 through 2001. RIP Stephen. You were always a good man, heck even a better man than I am now in 2022. RIP brother. This song will always haunt me. Thank for your contribution to society in the 206, 425 and the 253. You will never be forgotten. LOve you Steve.

"Then why are you listening to Sunny Day Real Estate?"
im watching that episode as we speak haha freaky XDXD
lol i heard of this band from foo fighters cause their bassist is in this band i like this song
Lawls!!!
Emo xD get up and embrace yourself man
Lol just saw this episode so it made me look this up haha
Can we just all agree the emo style of music is completely unattached to the "emo" fashion
+The King Of Limbs Emo *subculture. Emo is a branch of post-hardcore, so there's a big hate on putting an image to it, but there are recurring things to its fashion, like sweaters, geeky glasses for the Midwest version and black jackets and assymetrical hair for the more modern version. The Emo subculture is just cringeworthy
Yes
Facts
Samuel Pearson I would disagree the stereotypes that are involved with it yes it can be but sadly most emission are middle schoolers who express themselves in the stereotypes and that where the “cringe” comes in its kids ruining the subculture it’s actually a real cool subculture if you look into it a bit more
Fuck yeah
The drummer is amazing
Simply amazing
He is! that bitch @$$ Grohl thought he sucked. Goldsnith is a better drummer than Grohl and whoever plays drums for the Foo Fighters.

It came out 30 years ago today (05/10/2024). Time flies.
That’s crazy!!!! In the blink of an eye!!!❤
I remember buying this cd like it was yesterday! So good
can't believe 2 peak albums released on the exact same day (weezer blue and diary)
I was actually thrilled to see this band referenced on South Park.
Jamie Dawson south park references bands all the time. Its not that big of a deal.
Super Perfect Cell chill out. He just made a point. Ppl like u are buzz kills.
Besides, been playing LEGO Star Wars and wanted them to have the emperor be playable while naked. I think the emperor naked in real life would be gross, but his neked body while in LEGO form would make me drool. So, leave Jamie Dawson alone. Some of us just want a neked LEGO emperor
+Super Perfect Cell There is no point in your comment other than to make someone feel slightly worse lol
Super Perfect Cell why are you so butthurt
David Bevans wtf are you talking about
Goldsmith is such an underappreciated drummer.
Ugh tru, he's so crazy good
Not good enough for the foo's though
I was *just* thinking about how fucking awesome the drums are in this song. Dude's a fucking boss on the kit.
hell yes
I know right? He's doing practically a fill every bar
This feels like a lifetime ago, when we were skateboarding ourselves through life....
Ahahaha
This song is the what epitome of someone who smokes weed and skateboards and is a dropout sounds like
Still skateboarding at 38
Lol this is gives Tony Hawk game vibes
lifetime is another band from NJ
The best thing about SDRE is you can make up your own lyrics when you sing along because nobody knows what he's actually singing
💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
Same with Louie Louie
😂
Nah I memorized all the lyrics to this song
I do
This has got to be one of the best-structured rock songs of all time. Every melody & riff just fits into the whole so well, and it's perfectly cathartic and beautiful.
"Emos? ...Ew-oh my God, Emos are such wannabe conformists."
-Edgar Allen Poe
Then are we EAP's?!
This is hilarious. I just watched that episode the other day
lmfao south park
His name is nightpain you conformist
ah, goths vs. emos, a tale as old as time...
(now wait till the goths and gothics start duking it out... [and yes 'goth' and 'gothic' are technically 2 seperate genres])
Possibly one of the greatest written songs of the 90s..the bass line alone, is genius
The drums are amazing paired with the bass.
This feels like high school. It hurts so good.
😭
This entire album is a masterpiece from start to finish!
The drummer is fucking bad ass!!!
used to be with the Foo Fighters!
IIRC, he started with Sunny Day Real Estate before joining Foo Fighters.
That is right.
Paul Sandoval then got kicked out of the Foo Fighters
Rock The Fuck Outta Those Drums!
One of the earliest concerts I saw as a teenager. Low opened for them at the OK Hotel in Seattle. Phenomenal night.
I MISS THE OK HOTEL SOOOO MUCH!!
I saw them there too. Loved the Ok Hotel.
This is the quintessential song that brings all the feels of what it was like to be a teenager in the Puget Sound in the mid-90s.
This song is really great. Makes me think back to when I was 14-15 and life was an emotional rollercoaster.
is the video old or not???
Same, you must be in the “ needs ibuprofen “ phase of your life like me lol … they are amazing and I haven’t honestly heard this in years… tons of memories coming in.
Ha yup 👍 we're totally about the same age
You’re life STOPPED being an emotional rollercoaster???
When I was young it was because of my emotions.
Now it’s a rollercoaster because I see so many stupid people everywhere 🤣
ahh 1st generation emo. When being emo meant dressing like a librarian.
No truer words spoken, man I miss those days
Where's my sweater?! 😉
2nd*
@@olivier2xx7 Rites of Spring would be older brothers, not parents
not librarian
Saw this video on Alternative Nation in the early 90s. This band was a profound influence on my musical taste and opened many doors to realizing other great bands.
I remember when I bought this album.
1995.
Good times.
Skateboard and pot.
Worries about that girl in English class.
Much simpler times.
John Gardone sounds about right.
I remember growing up watching 120 minutes every Friday or Saturday night , couldn’t miss a show
I searched "emo band album cover with Playmobils" to find this band.
Best comment lmfao
*about as under rated as smoking*
It worked though thats what counts.
I checked this band thanks to South Park
No you didnt
The whole performance by the group especially William Goldsmith the drummer was one hell of a performance. I really appreciated this band and song even though I'm a child of the 70's. The video was also well done, kudos to all involved.
Amazing song. still gripping even after all these years.
I think it's under-rated but this is probably just my preference it's earcandy to me.
The drummer kicks ass. Hearing these guys for the first time and I grew up in the 90's.
I hate the fact that the intro was shortened on this. Why does music have to be in a rush?
Anyway, this song is simply awesome. This is like a classic to me.
Vote4cake
agreed
Just listen to the longer version lol
Cause it's a single.. The video and radio versions usually get trimmed.
#Vote4cake i discover this song a few days ago, its incledible amaizing. Very beautiful and powerfull song. Greets from Chile. Nice avatar pic! ;)
Radio time limits songs to 4 minutes, (preferably 3.5) the original is 4:46, so they had to cut it to get it on mtv.
Such a unique and strangely beautiful feeling when I hear a song that was once part of my life.
This band is one of the best things to happen to music as a whole
so is deja entendu
I love deja to death
Goldsmith is a beast! Been on this kick lately listenin to the music I was jammin back when I was 13-15.... and it's definitely got a lot of sdre and dinosaur jr. I remember when this one was released.
I love this song. the melody, the emotion of the instruments

Who else remembers buying this cd 30 years ago? Still love them!
First song I heard by them, and it remains my favorite.
SDRE and Mineral are criminally underrated.
Yup 🤗
Its a shame that this real emo indie masterpiece has only 1.6M views
It's been labeled "emocore" since the 90's, but yea this also mixes in indie
It’s better that way
When people try to argue that bands like My Chemical Romance are not real emo, while saying that Sunny Day Real Estate is, I can't help not to cringe because they are just as fake emo as My Chemical Romance (plus the pretentiousness).

As a long time fan of SDRE, I really don't give a fuck if Onision or South Park or whatever brought you here, as long as you dig this music, that's all that matters.

This one is for you, Stephen Cassidy. Love and miss you. I am sorry you went out that way. I recall meeting you in 1993 at first pres in Bellevue. We attended different middle and high schools.

I been listening to these guys since i saw this video back in 1994.. SDRE & the band curve got me thru some tough times in the 90’s & early 2000’s. I see people are calling them emo but i always just thought they were 90’s indie rock. Call it what you will. I still love this band all these years later

Lol yeah it's emo's 30th anniversary and somehow almost everyone still doesn't know what emo means
***** So true, somehow people before, thought emo were Rites of Springs and Sunny Day Real Estate and now these dumbass teens think emo is bvb or botdf which sound not even close to emo.
Lilith Samejima I guess you can thank South Park's SE17 Ep. 04 entitled "Goth Kids 3: Dawn of the Posers" for that, Most people that bring it up, or troll, Have not even heard of them? until the creators decided they would make fun of the whole Goth and Emo rivalry and made this band out to be the most Emo one in existence.
