Steve is correct in his assessment of the play in the league today. It used to be three yards and a cloud of dust. Not anymore. Offense is an exercise in trigonometry and you gotta have a quarterback intelligent enough to come up with the winning equation.
It wasn't up and down, it started bad, finished good. Almost like he had to shake off the rust of not playing for 3 weeks and by the end of the game, got his mojo back. GO 9ERS!!!

Only the greats recognise greatness. Steve acknowledges that Brock has elevated the Niners chances of winning the with his clutch play and smart decision making
I'm a Niner fan and I think the reason there is so much hate is because Purdy does not fit the new age prototype QB with the added bonus of being the very last pick in the draft. I mean honestly it looks like he works in the drive through at Starbucks. but I'm fine with that because he is EFFICIENT enough to go all the way and get the job done.
Finally.. someone said it... brock had the best efficiency number ever.. maybe rodgers 2021 season. Maybe kurt warners 2000 season. But those two and purdy 2023 are the top 3 in no particular order..
I wish someone would tell Shanahan that he has THE BEST DUAL THREAT RB in the league! Also, explain that exposing Purdy behind that mediocre Oline (except Trent) for more than 2.5 seconds is gonna be a problem. Start scheming a short pass game. Chip away at the sticks and let McCaffrey eat on short downs
No. Purdy knows how to escape the pocket and create plays and he is also the highest rated QB this season against pressure. No need to debate me back. Just go watch film.
@martinyourbro So you think it's a good idea heading into Championship wknd or possibly the SB without compensating for a weak Oline??? I love Purdys game as much as any other 9er fan, but anybody that "watches film" will tell you that Brock isn't, Mahomes, or Jackson when it comes to mobility 🤣 And those 2 defenses will DOMINATE our Oline.
@@Ruben6981 my point is they clearly have been compensating for it all year. Check downs to CMC are very much in the gameplan already and on top of that Purdy has been statistically the best at handling pressure so your comment makes 0 sense.
@martinyourbro My point is that Shanahan past 6 games has been starting off games pass heavy instead of running the damn ball with the BEST RB in the league. Also, if we play the Cheifs or Ravens, that pass scheme is gonna have to adjust from deep drag, crossing or post routes to simple 5-8yd IN/OUT or hook routes to chip away at solid secondaries
Purdy's great advantage is he started 46 games in college. He has easily 2x the experience playing QB as most rookies and 2nd year NFL qbs. This has proven to be incredibly important imo
All QB's are game managers which is why it's a silly thing to say. Every single one of them is involved in every offensive snap from their team and how they manage their decisions is how much success they see in the games. Some do it with a slinger type style, others do it dink and dunk, some do it with out of pocket free lancing... but they are all managing the game in some fashion.
Game manager used to mean manage to not lose the game for your team; You're not asked to make tough throws or be the reason you convert - hit your check down and hand the ball off. Some teams have been good enough that they can win a title with a decent game manager- other teams are happy with 8-8 behind a game manager@@jonq8714
I think people underestimated the Packers being the 7th seed. 1, they were blossoming at the right time. 2, connection between coaching staffs. 3, Playoffs and history between the 2 teams. 4, wet weather, the best neutralizer.
Sometimes the play calling is confusing. CMC got just 17 carries in a rainy day; they also have Mitchell and Mason. Similar case in Baltimore, CMC averaged like 7 ypc, but got less than 20 carries; the first drive of that game were all passes. When you run the ball 30 times per game usually you win, when you average like 4 ypc.
That game went as poorly as it did because Kyle keeps abandoning the run. CMC finished with over 5yds/carry. CMC should be used like a jab in our offense and let Brock be the cross
Oh stop with this defeatist mentality. Everyone seems to think they can coach better than Kyle from their sofa. Packers were selling out to stop the run so passing made sense, and if that didn’t work, you adjust. CMC had two TD RUNS did he not? Not all games are going to be blow outs. Enjoy these nail biters and what matters is that Niners won.
Yeah the run game was absolutely nuts, he broke one 39 yarder, and I think he had another than went more than 5 yards but most of the runs seemed to be getting stuffed except when they only needed a couple yards for a first, his 5.6 YPC stat line did not seem like it from watching the game. It was like Kyle wanted to win a super raining game through the air... for a QB that probably does have issues gripping a wet football, absolutely baffling. Going forward I hope Kyle learns from this, and doesn't let ego get in his way of the team.
So let me get this figured..y’all wanted Kyle to run the ball more when packers run defense held cmc to 3.6 per carry after that 1 big 39yard run? Run game wasn’t really working vs that defense. If he sticked to the run, & wasn’t successful with it still y’all would be calling for Kyle’s head 😂
They should have a part of the game that takes out all the running backs and everyone starts at the same yardline and against the same defense....then we can objectively compare QBs.
Rich I don't know if you remember this but Joe Montana threw three interceptions and that 1982 the catch NFC championship game against Dallas but still end up having a winning drive so why you getting on purdy... True he's no Montana but still he was able to help get the win...
all the criticism is ridiculous, especially considering that this was his first full season as a starter from training camp to the end of the season.. and even that he was coming off an injury and nobody knew if he could even start the season...
Let's see... with the game on the line, one QB led his team to a 67-yard game-winning TD drive, and the other QB, with the game on the line, threw an INT. Which one do you choose?
personally, I felt like he kept trying to force the longest pass possible on every passing play. There were many times he had check downs wide open. Allow those guys to make plays and gain yards even if it is only a few. Instead he ended up with a lot inaccurate throws, incompletions and almost picks throwing into double + coverage. In the end it all worked , but I think he can tighten that decision making a tad.
Agreed. If we get to the Super Bowl we will have to play Mahomes or Lamar. Best way to neutralize those 2? Make them spectators. How do u do that? Long clock eating drives which means run game and checkdowns
Steve forgot to mention 97% of the "passes" to Deebo are within 3 yards of the line of scrimmage lol. I sure as hell hope Purdy would be "Mr. Efficiency" based on the completion percentage considering that
Steve Young vouching for Purdy as the QB I totally agreed with...but not his claim that SHAMnahan is a good coach. SHAMnahan plays for the 3-pts kicking game before halftime in the Playoff & SB is Pathetic. SHAMnahan purposely stalled the offense momentum so the other team would not get ball back is STUPED absurb. Especially when 49ers were not up by a lot. SHAMnahan should take some math classes as everybody is playing lights out to beat him
I think the rain affected both qbs but i think that Brock is a quarterback that just cant sit for 3 weeks. Hes just not built that way. At least right now.
Purdy was off. We can admit it. The wet ball and wind seem to be a bigger problem for Brock than others, but its something he can work on in the offseason. What concerns me more is Purdy and the offense haven't looked right since Christmas. Not a big sample size. A chance he lost some confidence and/or defenses have a better idea from the Ravens how to defend him. I doubt thats real but its possible. Go Niners!!
Love throwing across his body or his back foot.....during the pregame...Love's interview....he was called Mahomes-esque....and he said he likes those throws cause he thinks he can make them. whoops!
The imperial idiocy in sports talk need to see this video. Brock is fine and will be fine. He is 23 years old for sake for sense. Brock will MNGA. Make NFL Great Again!!!!
Sometimes, I suspected Shanahan calls, like the end of the first half, instead of calling time out to plan more aggressive plays (total of 3), he wasted one play by snapped the ball. Shanahan is too conservative, he settled for field goal instead. Unfortunately, it was blocked.

Deebo Samuel commands respect from the defense. When he is out, the opposing defense plays differently. He has to study and learn how to deal with the opposing defense when they run No-Deebo defense.
FWIW, rain effects every QB. Peyton Manning (HOF) lost 8% of his effectiveness in rainy weather and he functioned better in the rain than virtually every other QB in the NFL. Aaron Rodgers drops 13%, Rothlesberger drops 15%, Brady drops 17% and HOF Kurt Warner lost a whopping 25%. Every QBs suffers, some dramatically like the previously mentioned Warner, but also HOF Dan Fouts who was abysmal in the rain.
Steve it wasn’t the rust. It was the rain and when you have smaller hands you can’t grip the ball you saw him with a gallon so I’m wiping his hand the Packers made mistakes. They should’ve thrown a red flag when they went for it on fourth and they got the first down and it was confirmed after the 49ers hike the ball of course they didn’t show the overhead shot Until the 49ers hike, the ball but I blame that on Matt Lefore for not calling a time out to look at it or throw a red flag that was at least three points and when McCaffrey ran for a 32 yard touchdown, the clock had expired, and no one threw a flag For the game so consider yourselves lucky a black Purdy did throw a really good dart but it was the receiver who caught that ball in the center of the field. That was an amazing catch and I’m sitting here screaming at the TV just cover the middle of the field that’s where Purdy‘s most dangerous, as is most quarterbacks, the quarterbacks that can throw it to the sidelines on a rope go lions
The Purdy discourse is weird. His fans want to make him out to be Joe Montana and his critics make him out to be Neil O'Donnell lol He is a good quarterback who can distribute the ball to the playmakers efficiently.
5:35. This is why I did not want to face the Eagles and Rams. They were both crawling into the playoffs but they were an experienced team. With us having almost 4 weeks off, I didn't want to get into a one-off scuffle and anything is up for grab and a rematch. Or even the Bucs. I really hoped Packers the bottom seed (no disrespect) would squeek past the Cowboys and I had 100% faith that they could pull that off too. But when they stormed into Dallas, I got nervous about my wishes. Thankful Niners hang on. Only 8 quarters of football left, 4 is not yet guaranteed. I hope they get the job done this time. 3rd times the charm
Jordan Love will break the career record for picks by the time he retires. He has bad fundamentals and an arrogance that he believes he can make the throw every time. He's a kid and like all humans his body will age, the throws will arrive a bit later, the legs will slow a bit and over the course of his career all these really bad fundamentals will catch up to him. Right now he can make the throws, in 7 years we will be talking about how he has the shot to over take Favre career 286 picks.
The ball was wet from the rain and Brock tried to wear gloves. When that didn't work he was out of sorts. The passes were not on target and they are lucky to have the win. The football gods were looking out for Brock and the niners.
“On The Money Steve”. Most of the retired quarterbacks say the same thing about MVPurdy. With the exception of “Don’t fall on the fumbled ball” Newton. The armchair Talking Heads spout if Brock was on another team, they go nowhere. 😂😂😂 You tell em Steve, 9ers have THAT Guy!
they wont. They play a 4-2-5 Defense this year since Azeez Al-Shaair went free-agent. Thats why GB was trying to run wide (only 2 LBs). Niners have a weak secondary so 5 man zones makes them play pass better. They try to make teams move the ball down the field slowly and hopefully stall out or get frustrated and make bad choices. @@jeffmiesen
Steve makes it sound like Purdy is throwing behind the LoS all the time. He has a lower percentage of his throws behind the LoS than most of the league! That stat was cherry picked by a hater a month ago. The fact is he leads the league in deep passing completion percentage. I loved his interview with Brock, but there’s a lot of stuff in here that I vehemently disagree with, and I think it perpetuates the thinking that will keep Brock held down in comparison to “the elite guys”.
The 49er offense is so good it made up for its deficits. They need two lineman who are much better on the right offensive side. McKivitz just isn't good enough to mention one. Imagine how good Purdy could be if he wasn't pressured so much. They also need Trent Williams not to retire. If they win the Super bowl I think he will retire. He's rich enough. I don't know how many times I have seen him put players trying to block him down on their butts. I'd take Purdy over any other quarterback. He's smarter than Jackson. One of these days someone is goingj to hit Jackson when he is running down the field and he'll get hurt. Speical Teams is mediocre. Hire a new special teams coach. Moody can't handle pressure kicks. He doesn't have the mindset like Gould did. A kicker has to have unlimited confidence and nerves of steel. Moody cost us at least two games this season as you know, Rams and Browns. Maybe more than that. Great kickers elevate the ball on field goals so they can't be blocked. I think they will beat the Lions if they have a normal game without mistakes. The Lions will be shocked at how good the Niner offense is. I love this team but they can get better. Imagine another great offensive lineman on the right. Football is won in the trenches. Whomever has the best lineman usually wins. The skill players need the line to give them time.
Trent already said he will be back next year, he wants the Pro Bowls record. But lets hope a good OT is still available at the end of the first round. Let the rookie compete for the RT job with Colton. And Colton can be your swing tackle for the 2 or 3 yearly games Trent misses with an ankle injury.
Hey Steve- You had Jerry Rice, and Terrell Owens with a good offensive line, Ricky Waters and overall better weapons than Brock does this season and he had a better season statistically than you ever did. These shots you're taking at Brock are cheap and uncalled for. "Brock needs a bunch of help around him to win but those top QB's can go win a SB on ANY TEAM"??? That sounds like Nick Wright's BS argument why Brock is that good.
People keep forgetting Joe Montana had bad games and won with minutes left. Joe Montana if you needed a final winning drive was money. No one remembers Joe Montana playing bad because he won. Brock has to do the same shut up the negative critics.

Jordan love threw for 19 yards in the fourth quarter. 5/9 1 int
All I hear is about how great he is. I think he’s a good young qb but he threw two picks in the last 20 min of play and did not look good in the late third and entire fourth quarter.
Love also plays behind an incredible offensive line unlike Purdy.
Baker has like 350 passing yards lol
@@808jonnysmith exactly. The 49ers O Line is built to help the run and to abandon the quarterback. How many Muddy pockets does Purdy throw out of a game? The 49ers need to do whatever it takes to draft the future at left tackle this year. What we should have done instead of drafting Trey. Without a decent O Line quarterbacks always look worse.
\
His numbers would be way worse if the Packers could catch 2 interceptions thrown straight to him. I'm glad you all love him. I'm glad he is not my qb
Master Young, your words are true like always.
Meditate on this I will
Steve is correct in his assessment of the play in the league today.
GO 9ERS!!!
Wait…could it truly be rust…lol. Even if my man won the superbowl, the hatred would still be strong.
@@sueme8170 If he wins a Superbowl, the hate will only increase.
@@johnbull1568 If he wins the SB that's a villain origin story. And I wouldn't mind Darth Purdy.

Steve Young is always a good listen
If Purdy puts together 5 more years like the last 18 months he will be a hall of famer. Thats enough right there.
I must be missing something because outside of maybe 2 throws Jordan Love didn’t show me all of that.
Purdy is younger and has played in fewer games than Love.
Love is only a year younger and they have played practically the same amount of games. Also, When Love was a rookie, not playing; Purdy was playing a full year at collage.
Get him on the NFL network! It’s ridiculous he got let go from Monday Night Countdown
Brock had a crap game because he didn’t come back from 45 points, hasn’t ended world hunger and has failed at ending wars in foreign lands. But the taller, more athletic QB made a horrendous throw when the game was on the line, but it’s OK. Haters are drinking all the flavors haterade has to offer.
Exactly!
😂😂😂
brock needs to play in a cat 5 hurricane with practice squad weapons and no kyle shanahan down 50 in the 4th qtr. This is how absurd the narrative surrounding a first full year player. Allen gets praise and participation trophys, purdy if the 262 pick doesnt win a superbowl in year 1.5 then dude is garbage. lol
Steve Young needs to call Nick Wright and let him know the truth about Brock Purdy. Especially coming from a hall of fame QB, a little better resume than Nick Wright.
Concussion and rain is Brock’s kryptonite. “Tell da truuth!”
For ever Young 🎄
I’m concerned about their defense giving up pass interference calls that give the other team two scores!? That’s not championship football
Model for my life. I remember my grandma buying a steve young book for youths “forever young”. If I could clone him I would
I wish someone would tell Shanahan that he has THE BEST DUAL THREAT RB in the league!
@@martinyourbro I will then. Rueben is right. Get new work horses to help him out. Top pick should be OL. Otherwise it will catch up to the QB.
Luv Steve
Love Steve young
Purdy's great advantage is he started 46 games in college. He has easily 2x the experience playing QB as most rookies and 2nd year NFL qbs. This has proven to be incredibly important imo
Steve is 100% correct on Purdy, and on "That guy" point on type of talent required in today's NFL.
Tell people that Purdy is merely a game manager at your own peril.
Great Interview!!
I think people underestimated the Packers being the 7th seed. 1, they were blossoming at the right time. 2, connection between coaching staffs. 3, Playoffs and history between the 2 teams. 4, wet weather, the best neutralizer.
Steve is so smart. Great dude.
Kyle is completely tied to his playbook. Once deebo went out, he has to adjust. Deebo is the biggest game breaker on the offense.
@@Ark-oi3qyreally should let Brock throw it deep way way way more vs an Awful lions secondary
Also people are forgetting the the 49ers db’s were slipping like crazy. 2 of love TD throws the receivers were wide open cause db’s slipped
That game went as poorly as it did because Kyle keeps abandoning the run. CMC finished with over 5yds/carry. CMC should be used like a jab in our offense and let Brock be the cross
Abandon? He didn't even apply it! Since the ravens game he's been all pass and it boggles my mind.
@Mike__B kyle hasn't learn to manage a clock since he's been on the niners, I don't think he'll learn anything.
You can tell that’s a real office
Rich I don't know if you remember this but Joe Montana threw three interceptions and that 1982 the catch NFC championship game against Dallas but still end up having a winning drive so why you getting on purdy... True he's no Montana but still he was able to help get the win...
No Montana, YET….. but Purdy close.
How does Steve young STILL look young enough to play
No one remembers how you win, they remember that you actually won the SuperBowl at the end
Looking on the bright side for Amy Trask, she can tell everyone that Purdy is the worst of the 4 QBs left.
all the criticism is ridiculous, especially considering that this was his first full season as a starter from training camp to the end of the season.. and even that he was coming off an injury and nobody knew if he could even start the season...
Let's see... with the game on the line, one QB led his team to a 67-yard game-winning TD drive, and the other QB, with the game on the line, threw an INT. Which one do you choose?
I wonder if TB12 would have been or was subjected to similar hate in his first years start.
* 3 time NFL MVP guys @0:37
Steve loves NY Jets part-time qb Zach. How's he doin' bro? How did your predictions workout on Zach?
personally, I felt like he kept trying to force the longest pass possible on every passing play.
It looked to me like Brock literally did not have a good grip on the football.
@@hawkname1234 He may have small hands as well as stature?
Steve forgot to mention 97% of the "passes" to Deebo are within 3 yards of the line of scrimmage lol. I sure as hell hope Purdy would be "Mr. Efficiency" based on the completion percentage considering that
Cam Newton put it the best. Brock and Goff are elite game managers, while Mahomes and Lamar are game changers.
To his left: Is that the drawer that contains all the uncashed checks from the 49ers?
How come I don't hear chris brockman telling Steve he's wrong about Purdy?
Jordan Love sounds like he must be SO SO young. How much younger is he than Brock?
He's 3 years older
The innovation, Steve is George Kittle, and Deebo Samuels
If any team knows how to play and beat Goff, it’s the 49ers. When Jared played for the Lambs, the Niners kicked his butt all the time!!!
1-28-24 How real football games are won. Even on the road.
I’ll take the analysis, and opinion of a former NFL QB, before some media pundit or former DB…
Sometimes, I suspected Shanahan calls, like the end of the first half, instead of calling time out to plan more aggressive plays (total of 3), he wasted one play by snapped the ball. Shanahan is too conservative, he settled for field goal instead. Unfortunately, it was blocked.
I agree. Just like the Cleveland game at the end. He easily could have shortened the missed FG by 10 yards or more if he didn’t fumble the clock.
Steve was "that guy".

Nice hair color Steve.
The great Steve “for ever” Young 👏👏👏
3rd time being - 3rd super bowl in past 10 years, or 3rd season in a row with a sniff at the super bowl either way, 3rd times the charm, please!!!
Green bay was hottest team in league at end of season Ill take the win dont care about eye test
Both QBs were affected by the rain and the wet ball. Love threw balls all over the place, could've had four picks instead of two.
Brock is "that guy".
49ers defense stood up in the 4th quarter. Not sure what Hargrave was doing or Thomas most of the game.
Hope they shore up that run defense quickly.
Wet ball and tall D Lines are Brock's crypto it's.
Brock Purdy played a better football game than Josh Allen and won it.
I didn't think all that time off was a good thing...maybe Brock has smallish hands and that heavy rain made it harder to hold it well
Steve Young the adult in the room, great analysis.
This is why I say Rich is out of the 49ers club house: he’s a doubter & a hater deep down 🤡
The 49er offense is so good it made up for its deficits.
Brock is good but is he in the tier of Mahomes? No. But that also excludes practically everyone in that case its now up to the roster.
A wet ball always bothered the great Rich Gannon and it was said to be due to his small hands. I am guessing Purdy has small hands.
People keep forgetting Joe Montana had bad games and won with minutes left. Joe Montana if you needed a final winning drive was money. No one remembers Joe Montana playing bad because he won. Brock has to do the same shut up the negative critics.
49ers we’re not beat in that game
I'm replying rainy games and I don't see a difference in play by others and play by Brock. Love struggled in the rain aswell. 2 pics very uncaristic of Love.
