    This video was EXTREMELY helpful. I went to Japan at the start of the year and ended up getting on the slowest Shinkansen on my way from Nagoya to Tokyo by accident and it took FOREVER. I'm going back to Japan in about a month and now I feel confident that I won't get on the wrong train again. THANK YOU!

    Dude, out of all the videos I've watched, nobody else has mentioned platt kodama and they push the JR pass this blows JR pass out the water for someone who is well organised. Thank you, you probably just saved me and the Mrs £80 🎉

      Thank you for watching. I wrote in description but somehow they deleted English purchase page for Platt Kodama after this video, so now you might need to go to the counter of JR Central Tours before the departure date. It doesn't come with beer, but you can also save with online reservation for both regular car and green car. ruclips.net/video/zjiIWXZNr5Q/видео.html Hope you have a great trip.

    More about Tokaido Shinkansen's online reservation Smart EX: ruclips.net/video/zjiIWXZNr5Q/видео.html
    (Update) More seats with baggage area from May 24, 2023 ruclips.net/video/Grtvjz_U5vM/видео.html
    1) If you purchase JR Pass online from the official site by JR Group, you can get your seat reserved online from 10am JST a month before the date you use. * The online EX site I introduced in the video can not be used in case you use JR pass.
    2) You can make reservation with your JR Pass at the JR counter or machines at major stations.
    Source: japanrailpass.net/en/purchase.html#anchor04
    * To save your time, it might help to make reservation for all or partial of your itinerary when you validate your pass. You can write down on paper and hand it to the staff. If you haven't installed yet, I recommend "JapanTravel by NAVITIME" app. It might help you to plan the route, as it's all in English and it tells you if the route is applicable for JR Pass.
    3) The new rule on luggage on Shinkansen only applies for Tokaido Shikansen and connected routes to Kyushu. It doesn't apply to Shinkansens by JR East including Hokuriku Shikansen as of today. I'm not sure how strict the rule is, but I wanted to share with you so that you don't feel that you got ripped off when they charge you 1000 yen, so it's good to know about it, and getting the seat with luggage space will give you ease of mind. :)

      Hi Kenchan San, been to japan several time but forgot two things:
      1. Is it possible if we purchase JR pass non reserved for 14 days from agency then when u arrive in japan, i would make a reservation seats at JR counter with extra cost? I believe it can be done but not sure lol.
      2. If we use non reserved seats, can we book a reserved seats with large baggage at the JR counter? Last time i booked JR green pass and put the luggage at the back of the seats while i was seating in the middle lol but they didnt charge me.

    • @tokyokenchan
      @tokyokenchan  Год назад

      Hello Husein san, I apologize I haven't answered sooner. If you purchase 14 days pass from agency, you can make reservation without any additional cost at the counter. The pass is choice of regular car or green car, and there aren't any pass for specifically "non-reserved seat". Yes, you used to be able to keep your luggage in the back as there were no rules before, but now that space is only for reservation. You can make reservation at the counter. I hope it helps.

    Thank you for this video! I'm trying to plan how I'll travel next month from Akita to Hakata. I'm traveling by Shinkansen for my first time from Tokyo but I had a couple of worries, especially considering I don't have any backup plans to stay in Tokyo during my trip. This cleared up pretty much all of my worries about things I should be aware of, and gave me some comfort and confidence I'll make it without any problems!

    Very helpful info. Specially explaining which one is available with JR PASS. We tried reserving it on the ticket kiosk but didn’t know which train we should be on other Not the Nozomi. I will try booking it myself again later as the line to talk to representatives are ridiculously long. Thanks again

      Yes, the line is quite long and the machine is not that difficult. It only show you the trains you can get on, so no worry. Hikari is the fastest one you can take with the JR pass. I wish you good luck. :)

    Great video! We traveled before by shinkansen and when possible always booked the last row to put our luggage. We have medium size checked luggage totalising about 140 cm. If I interpreted the new rule correctly, they are not considered oversize…but still, I doubt they fit well in the overhead compartment. Experience anyone?

    Stumbled upon your channel while preparing for our trip this March. Excellent advice, thank you so much! Securing train tickets and planning is daunting but your video is very helpful. Thanks for pointing out which side of the train has which view, my griflriend will be very happy to know this. Is it OK to recline on the train? A lot of Americans find it rude for airplane travel so I do not want to impose if it is not acceptable on trains.

    • @tokyokenchan
      @tokyokenchan  Год назад +1

      Thank you for finding my channel! I'm glad you found it helpful. Seat D/E (regular seats) C/D (green car) are Mt.Fuji side. If you travel on regular car, mountain side is better anyway as ocean side has 3 seats and someone comes next to you. As for the reclining seat, I think it's similar here with the US. On the short distance highway bus or domestic flight, I don't see many people recline. But it's common to recline seats on Shinkansen, as you have so much more space between the front seats even in regular cars, and the starting position of the seats are straight up which is hard to see the window. I usually recline my seat on Shinkansen as soon as I arrive the seat. :)

    Omg arigato for this! Growing up watching anime, I've always wanted to try an ekiben bento because the characters always eat that whenever they travel huhu. Btw I searched everywhere for JR Pass users via Hikari Shinkansen, reservations must be made in the ticket office and not in advance online. Hopefully I'll get one because I have luggage otherwise I might just jikukan ninjutsu my way to Kyoto and back to Tokyo next week lol.

    • @tokyokenchan
      @tokyokenchan  2 года назад +1

      hahaha, you can use ninjutsu and move cities with your suitcases, but you will miss the most important part - ekiben..
      You are right. The Smart EX is not for JR Pass holders. It seems only if you purchase JR pass from official JR group site, you can make reservation online in advance. Am I correct? japanrailpass.net/en/purchase.html#anchor04

    • @MissAstoria19
      @MissAstoria19 2 года назад +3

      @@tokyokenchan checked this one out and yes. You can only reserve seats online if you bought your JR pass at the JR website. If the pass was bought from a third party (which is always cheaper) it’s not possible. 😩
