Dell G3 3590 (2019) Thermal Testing - How Hot Is It?

  • The Dell G3 is Dell’s entry level gaming laptop for 2019 and comes in at a more budget friendly price point compared to their higher end options like the G5 or G7. I’ve previously found the G5 to run very hot, so how does the G3 compare?
    In this testing we’ll take a detailed look at performance, see if there is any throttling caused by thermal or power limits, and find out what can be done to improve gaming performance and temperatures.
    I’ll investigate undervolting, overclocking, and show you how hot the laptop gets while gaming and under combined CPU and GPU stress test with different settings, let you listen to total system fan noise, test with a cooling pad and see hot spots with a thermal camera.

    I've had mine for a day and a half so far. Snagged it from Dell's Labor Day sale. Thoughts:
    - It definitely runs hot. A cooling pad would be useful for most people that want to push this thing hard.
    - It's fairly quiet doing anything but gaming. It's honestly about as loud as the 3 fans in my old desktop; not really noticeable.
    - I have the GTX 1650 and the i5-9300H. It's handled everything I've thrown at it so far with gusto. No lag. No issues. Quick load times.
    Example: I played a few rounds of Mechwarrior Online tonight. It ran hot (to be expected) but that game is an unoptimized Cry-Engine monstrosity that was built on a version of CryEngine 3 that didn't have a whole lot of the good performance updates of later engine builds.
    It looked beautiful at max-ish settings and ran anywhere from 40 to 80 FPS (usually dependent on map. Some are laggy to this day), even when I had GeForce constantly recording. Quite smooth.
    TL;DR: Worth it! Keep it cool and expect some good performance out of it for the price.

      Yes I have the same laptop. I m not a gamer but i need high performance laptop for my software development work. Heat is an issue for me. Even when I do regular day to day stuff heat will significantly increased. If I touch the bottom line of the screen I can feel it.
      Apart from the heat issue. Since I am not using performance mode laptop is quite silent for me.
      I need a solution for this extra heat.

      The temperatures are still very hot? Is it the amount of heatpipes that cause the overheating? Or is it because the fans and heat sink doesn't move enough air? It seems like the amount heatpipes are too little for an i7 9750H.

    WTH Dell? This laptop is actually silent during the quiet mode, which I can't say for the last year's model I have, which can be pretty loud in the quiet mode even at idle and at temps 45-60, which are completely safe! Silence is what I want when temps are low, I don't understand why in the last year's model all the quiet mode does is limits the CPU TDP to 15 watts!

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 лет назад

      Yeah good that quiet mode actually means quiet 😂 at least at idle, of course, the fans would kick in after a bit if I actually start using it, and would probably depend on ambient temps too.

      @@JarrodsTech can you help me? I have a Dell G3 3590 with a very similar configuration (it`s nearly the same except it has 24Gb RAM and 525Gb SSD). You`ve mentioned in the video that it is tend to be warm during running games. Could you recommend any kind of cooler pad which is worth to use it with? Secondly, for my previous laptop (Lenovo Ideapad Y510p) I have a vacuum cooler alongside with. One of my colleagues (whom I do not really respect as a computer pro) said it can ruin my notebook`s inside cooler fans. It has a potmeter where you can adjust the power of the vacuum cooler`s fans, but there`s no way to measure the speed of it of course, moreover, there`s no way to determine the speed of the coolers inside the notebook. Therefore he said that if the vacuum cooler`s fans are faster than the coolers inside the notebook, it can ruin the thole of the coolers inside the laptop. What do you say, is it true or it is just a fantasy of his simple mind? And what do you think, is it worth to keep this vacuum cooler alongside with Dell G3? Because in case of the Ideapad Y510p there were blow-holes on the side of the notebook where you can easily fit the vacuum cooler, but in case of Dell G3 it`s not so simple because as far as I see it has a blow-hole right below the hinge and in my view it couldn`t be simple to fit the vacuum cooler there because of the hinge itself....or what is your recommendation at all, what is the best cooler to use alongside with Dell G3 3590? Thank you for your help in advance and I`m looking forward to your answer.

    I’ve been using this laptop for quite a while, around a 1.5 years, though I’m not quite sure. It’s honestly not the best experience I’ve had. I’m not particularly someone with any great economical standing since I’m a college student in low income household, but I managed to get one of these practically new for just 500 dollars with just a month of use on it. Hurray! I got 6 cores and 12 threads for my engineering work and a beefy GPU to play some games on the side while away from my desktop. Ironically, on paper, this laptop faired quite better than my desktop at home with an R5 1600, 16GB of RAM and GTX 1060 3Gig variant. This is only on paper though.
    During regular use, it would constantly underclock most frequently due to thermal constraints, and at times, power distribution constraints too. I’m aware I live in the tropical island of Puerto Rico but it would slow down to a crawl, dropping from 3.2GHz to 2.4GHz and crashing down into 1.5GHz range. All. The. Damn. Time. If it’s unplugged, it’s underclocked natively and would still become extremely hot. While plugged in, the fact that it would now suck large amounts of power from the wall would heat it up. There just wasn’t any middle ground. Even indoors in a well air conditioned office or library where I frequently studied in, it would become a thermonuclear power plant with a Hurricane generator attached to it.
    About the fans though, even at max speed, they barely push out any air. I’ve used decade old laptops with single fans capable of blowing more volume of air than both the fans in the g3 combined, with similar or even better sound performance. Geez, Dell, at least help me cool this damn thing. The bottom air vents cover part of the fans and the filter is not fine enough, being more material than holes. It’s just so loud and blows no air to justify it. This leads to my CPU being at 90+ degrees while doing anything and if I’m lucky, it could be within the 80s. Given this, I reiterate that the CPU is constantly downclocked due to thermal constraints.
    Once a load starts, it’s all over. Going back to the power limit constraints. EVEN IF you’re not thermally restricted, you’re heavily power limited. The moment the GPU Is actually needed, say for gaming or a quick render of my CAD models, the CPU just gets sucked out of life dropping to the 1-2GHz range. I’ve endured to have it in a cooled room with the fans maxed out and good airflow directed at it, but even with a cold die, it would be underclocked because you either get CPU or GPU performance. And even when you’re using just one, you never ever really get their performance as you’d expect in other machines. This does affect heavily in gaming, since when the GPU is heavily loaded, there’s no power for the CPU, so alt-tab’ing out of a game will be troublesome because windows doesn’t have CPU overhead to deal with your requests. Not only for gaming, but with many things that strain the GPU but should leave good overhead for the CPU. Overwatch will lead my CPU to drop to 1.5GHz with a 30% usage limit at those speeds. A slight issue while gaming, a huge issue while trying to do any background tasks. Even discord calls would suffer and I would “lag” or cut it in calls simply because my CPU was power starved.
    It’s a really mixed bag. I’ve tried ripping out the filter, using expensive thermal paste that I bought for my desktop, DIY cooling pad with two high quality 140mm desktop fans I had laying around, some wood work and a 12v modem power supply (worked great and was fun to make), I’ve cleaned the inside many times, undervolting, though unstable with my workloads. It’s just a heat machine and even if I slap on liquid metal, which I have been considering, it’ll then proceed to have power limitations. I get it’s a budget system but why put such good hardware in it and not even let me use it.
    As a closing statement, I’m just glad I bought it at 500. That was a damn steal, knowing it was around 1200-1700USD, had one month of use and seemed amazing on paper. Due to the pandemic, I gave up on selling my desktop and I’m now back to using it. For context, I tried selling my build and use my laptop as my main system with two external monitors but no one would want to buy the desktop, so I’m back on it and now considering selling the layout for some spare mula. Maybe I could break even or perhaps even get more than what I paid for, knowing it’s still good hardware. I’ll figure something eventually. Great video btw! 💜

      To add onto this, in whatever latest bios/chipset update, I am no longer capable of using the Intel XTU utility and since I recently picked up this thing from my closet and updated everything at once with a fresh install of windows, I now have no idea what disabled it. I will be trying to rollback the drivers one by one but I just want to know why the hell would they remove the ability to reduce slightly the power consumption and thermal output of this chip :(

      Couldn't explain better, hats off! I also have the same damn problem you had and it's really pissing me off sometimes.
      It's not almost 2 years since my dad bought me this device. When I first got it, I was really happy and amazed (and I still am honestly, just because of what hardware it has). Just after a month or 3, I faced the biggest problem and that is the thermal heating of this device.
      Let me note this real quick: My device has Windows 11 operating and it has an external monitor. It also has 20gigs of ram; one slot of 4 and one of 16. Everything I say are based on my specs.
      I am a software developer/graphics developers and I'd like to get everything out of my device, also while coding my programs. A lot of the programs I use to build applications just takes a lot of my cpu usage and thermal heating is not really making my workspace efficient.
      The biggest bruh moment happens while gaming.
      Once I open up a video game, the processor temperature goes all the way up to 100 degrees celcius. One of the games I play is Counter Strike: Global Offensive. In a game like that, it's really nice to have a lot of FPS, which requires everything out of my cpu. It starts getting annoying when it reaches above 90 degrees celcius. The clock frequency will automatically go down if the temperatures are high, as you already mentioned, causing fps drops in my game.
      I tried everything to solve the problem; cleaning everything inside my device, applying new thermal paste, updating the BIOS settings. I also setup a big fan behind my device back in summer because it can be really hot sometimes here in the Netherlands. None of the actions I took worked and I am here with the problem. I was thinking to purchase myself a cooling pad and some new fans, maybe that will help, but after seeing this video and your comment, it made change my mind.
      I think (at least, almost) every G3 user has this problem. Dell also does not give a single fuck if it comes to support or just anything at all. I know for sure that I am not going to buy anything from Dell anymore. My brother used to have the same problem again, Dell did just not help at all.
      As you mentioned already, the price of these devices are amazing, indeed a damn steal let's be honest. It feels nice to work on, the display is decent for me at least. It's just sad that we cannot get EVERYTHING out of our beautiful hardware all because of thermal heating. I think the best thing I can do is just save for an actual gaming desktop since I bought this one just for my study.

    I've had mine for a week and a half, and i have to say that i'm worried.
    The single game that i tend to play : Overwatch (which was one of the games advertised that the laptop could play) usually runs at temperatures higher than 95 degrees Celsius quite consistently each time that i play it, and while i don't have a cooling pad, i find it a bit worrying given that most other thermal tests don't come out with results nearly as hot.
    The specs on my G3 may not be as high but it was advertised that it could game (with frame rates as high as 80 fps on games like overwatch):
    -NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 with 3GB GDDR5 graphics memory
    -512GB M.2 PCIe NVMe Solid State Drive
    -8GB 2x4GB DDR4 2666MHz
    - 9th Generation Intel® Core™ i5-9300H (8MB Cache, up to 4.1 GHz, 4 cores)
    Any ideas?

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 лет назад

      Nothing really to be concerned about, these things are designed to run hot under load and will just throttle back as needed to remain in safe thermal limits. Yours is either warmer because you're in a warmer room temp than me (generally every 1c increase to room temp = 1c increase to internals), or maybe the thermal paste was applied poorly at the factory. The 1050 is kind of entry level, but for esports titles like overwatch 80 FPS should be easy at lower settings.

      Yeah I'd expect better thermals with the i5 under same workloads due to less cores, assuming they have same lower limits. If the power limits are boosted it might run similarly or hotter but also hit higher clock speeds, hard to say for sure how it behaves without testing.

      Anyone reading this in the future, lookup "Dell G3 3590 hinge issue" online. Look at the 6:07 mark on the video, see how the bottom left and right corners of the screen gets hot? That's exactly where the hinges are, it's possible from all of the expansion and contraction of the plastic where the hinges are, it causes the threaded inserts to get dislodged from the back frame of the plastic. Most 3590 owners will have issues with their hinges dislodging from the back frame. However, I have not yet seen any cases of the screen itself from being affected.

      Jarrod'sTech so I've got it in hand and I've tried it out for a day and I've noticed that when it's unplugged, it became really limited in performance. Did you have a similar issue? Under a stress test, it would instantly throttle to 1.9GHz even though thermally it was at 60-70 degrees and in games, the FPS in Overwatch would go from 130 when plugged in to 20-30FPS on battery. The GPU is still at 100% usage so I assume clock speeds also drop heavily. I've searched every setting I could. Maybe I overlooked one.
      Did you by any chance test on battery for the sake of it? I just don't know if it's a hard power limit, maybe the battery can't provide that much power.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 лет назад

      @@Derpuwolf Yes that's normal with pretty much all laptops, batteries are not able to provide full performance, that's why I don't even bother testing battery performance in my reviews - well except when I do the witcher 3 to test battery life, but I cap it to 30 FPS and I don't monitor clock speed. Basically if you're playing games, plug into power for best performance, that'll be the case regardless of laptop.

If you can expend the additional money, try going the extra mile and pick up a laptop with an i7 9750H and full 1660 Ti, as it won’t really cost too much more on average, and you’ll get much better performance, especially if you go with the one from Acer.

    In case you wanna effectively lower your temps without lots of voltage ajdusting and testing, just disable turbo boost. We did this on my cousin´s laptop (i5 93xxH runs hot like crazy, that´s some crappy implementation of turbo boosting by intel) and temps dropped to 7x°C range for both CPU and GPU. The lower frequency impact depends on type of games you play. He plays mostly GPU demanding games, so it´s okay for him.

I have had mine for 3 1/2 years now and while some games just play with minimal problems, the fan and heat is very excessive when playing most games. I have no idea how to get it to cool down, and some games make my cpu/gpu overheat to the point of restarting because of overheat. I have no idea why this happens but I think it just does it just because it does it without reason. I think it was even responsible for one of my hinges breaking because it gets mostly hot towards the top of the lower part of the pc and also I could imagine the heat weakened it. And my warranty is up so I can no longer ask Dell or anyone to fix said issues or help me out.

    What cooling pad are you using? I have this same laptop I purchased back in dec 2019 and I've played games about 7 or 8 times on it because it's such a hot boy. It's loud and I just turn it off and get on my desktop. Now I have a trip coming up and I need this machine. Can anyone assist me with any good cooling pads?

    i have the same one but run at Hight temps ...im thinking on use liquid metal instead of thermal pase it is a good idea ... or a cooling pad is enough

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  4 года назад

      Start with the cooling pad and see how that goes. As for liquid metal, you'll have to research the materials used by the laptop, because liquid metal doesn't work with all laptops.

    How can I overclock this specific laptop? I have the same one

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  4 года назад

      The process is the same regardless of laptop, nothing specific. Just look for a generic guide on using MSI Afterburner for a laptop, all you do is boost the core/memory speeds until you get crashes, then back it off.

    • @TheUchihasparky
      @TheUchihasparky 4 года назад

      Estiven Cabrera if you are talking about overclocking the laptops CPU, there is no way to do this and you wouldn’t want to do it anyway, look into undervolting

    Someone, please tell me which one is better. Acer Nitro 5 or the Dell g3 for a 1650 graphics card. Please explain why also if you could.

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 лет назад +1

      Probably Nitro 5. I'm still in the middle of testing it (videos will be up next week), but the CPU has higher power limits so CPU performance is higher than what I saw in the G3.

    • @Nick89000
      @Nick89000 5 лет назад

      Jarrod'sTech Thanks for the reply. The thing I'm most worried about is heat. My friend said he got a dell g5 last year and it heats up so bad that the performance drops. Which out the 2 laptops heat more. I saw your heating test on the g3, it seemed pretty hot but I've seen multiple reviews of the nitro 5 saying it hits 90 degrees easy too. I'm going to uni next year so I want a more reliable laptop that can play games here and there, a few hours at a time if it can. Would you still recommend the Nitro 5 nonetheless? You're a life saver :D

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  5 лет назад +1

      My Nitro 5 did thermal throttle while gaming at stock fans, but by boosting the fan speed it was fine, my detailed thermal testing video is scheduled for the 29th which will have all the details.

    Do you recommend this or the MSI Gv62 8RE both have 1060 thx and similar specs I’m mainly interested in getting it for VR

    • @JarrodsTech
      @JarrodsTech  4 года назад +1

      The 1060 should be ok I think it's the minimum requirement for VR. I don't know if I've tested that one so hard to say, might have a review on it from 2 years ago but not sure, either way too long ago for me to comment on you'd have to check for the video.
