      I always wanted to apply thermal paste for my CPU and GPU, but I thought it was too risky. Lately, however, my laptop (the maxed out XPS 15 Skylake version) has been heating up way too much whenever I play Overwatch. Is the application process the same like your XPS 15 Kaby Lake version?

      Hey Dave! As always, a very nice video. I would just like to say that for the owners of the Alienware 17 R4, it's better to make undervolting as the main solution for CPU temperature problems. That's because getting to the CPU core is very difficult for inexperienced people, like me, thus becoming very difficult to accomplish a re-pasting. For the record, my 6820HK was getting about 80 degrees under full load, and now, with -0.150V, I get a maximum of 60~70 degrees Celsius.

    Great walk through Dave. I used this to re-paste and under volt my XPS 9570. I was able to push it to -130 Mv, and with the re-pasting my load temps dropped from and average of 97 to 87. I also put pads on the voltage regulators and can definitely notice how much heat they transfer to the case now. The only difference is I used Throttle Stop, I found the Intel app reverting my settings after restart. I also use the profiles feature to disable Turbo and play with Speed Shift while on the battery. Everything seems to have helped quite a bit with battery life.
    Cheers

    Back when I used to look into PC tweaks more, the common method was to put some thermal compound on the chip, and then get it as spread evenly as possible with the end of a credit card or something. No one goes that far anymore I guess? The pressure from the heatsink should press the blob method into form, but probably not to quite the same degree of evenness I assume.

      People are worried about air bubbles when spreading, as they're supposedly more likely than just the blob.

    • @tipoomaster
      @tipoomaster 8 лет назад +3

      If any small bubbles did exist with that method (and the goal of it is to get as close to none as possible), the heatsink pressure that's supposed to turn the blob into a flat surface in the first place would also even those out, no? It's probably moot anyways, as he showed the worst thing is too little paste and low quality paste.

After undervolting it lowered 78C-83C. Then I applied new thermal past and thermal pads (a lot of pads) it idels around 48C and underload I maintain 65C-75C. I was surprised on how many pad it had and the quality was very low to include the thermal past (poorly applied MSI needs to do a QA/QC). I want to thank D2D for making this video. 👍

    • @Wave1dave
      @Wave1dave 7 лет назад +5

      So effectively you dropped temps under load from 91°C to 75°C? Nice! I can't undervolt my i5-3230m as Ivy Bridge was the last generation, which couldn't be undervolted... However, I successfully applied new thermal paste and... well, managed to drop temps by 3°C under load to about 75°C (cpu stress only). Guess stock paste was good already.
      I wonder what my temps are going to be when i7-3630QM arrives. Might struggle with a little temperature throttling...

    There is a good reason the manufacturers chose those voltages, do not be surprised if your laptop crashes on odd occasions when messing with them. reducing voltage raises the noise-floor hence bit-errors. This is akin to someone putting a K&N air filter on their new car thinking it will increase the power).

    My laptop consistently runs hot. I accidentally left a video game running all day without realizing it once, and came back to find the CPU and GPU were sitting at about 90c. The keyboard was uncomfortably hot. My fans must have been working overtime too, because the next week one of them went bad. I've got a replacement fan, and some thermal paste, and I'm getting ready to do the repairs - I'm kind of nervous about it, though! I've done these sorts of repairs on desktops, but those are considerably easier than laptops. Wish me luck! :D

    Great vid. Tried the same thing with the same laptop. I didn't do a before and after for undervolting, but -130 mv works. Before and after applying liquid metal, from 77 to 60 degrees under cpu stress test before and after. It thermal throttles after ~1 min in full cpu and gpu load, after liquid metal, it stays around 80 degrees full cpu and GPU loads. still feels warm under left shift and backspace. The most notable difference is how quickly the fans turn off after stress, and how much computation you need to be doing for the fans to work up in the first place.

    Hey Dave, awesome video man! But could you maybe make an updated video, discussing the "pump out" effect of thermal pastes. Leaving the stock thermal paste in your laptop might sometimes even be the better option in the long run, since a lot of high quality pastes with good thermals, might not last so long in a laptop on a bare die. This is a topic nobody is discussing really. :)

    • @AidedOnslaught
      @AidedOnslaught 3 года назад

      Hydronaut has been the only paste I found that is consistent. The temps are higher out of the gate than other pastes but it lasts longer than 3 days.
      I bought some TFX and want to give it a shot, but I just read on the back of the container "silicone". Silicone is the reason why most pastes "pump out". It expands and falls off the bare die. Wish I would have done more research on it than just go off of people's short experiences. I think I'll just keep my silicone free Hydronaut for now.

    I know its too late and the age of this video means this will probably not be read but if it helps one person thats already good, but if you're replacing the thermal paste of a laptop, it is very important that you spread the thermal paste on the CPU/GPU die to cover it all. It's better to have a little extra than not enough since you should be using a non conductive paste anyways. the reason is that the die is much more sensitive to thermal temperatures if it isnt covered well, as opposed to CPU's in desktops that have lids .

    • @bepis2679
      @bepis2679 7 лет назад +41

      They set a voltage that will work across a larger number of CPUs to increase yield. Intel would rather have all of their chips running on a little bit extra voltage if it means more of them will be usable. Some CPUs need all the voltage, others don't. It would be nice if Intel fine tuned each chip, but that is simply not feasible for them to do.

    • @robertkubrick3738
      @robertkubrick3738 7 лет назад

      Germanator, but you can optimize voltage for your particular chip. The voltage has a cap at the upper limit but it is not locked so you can undervolt them.

      @itsneight1260 8 лет назад +2

      generally when overclocking you're turning the voltage UP and you would get better performance so it would seem to make sense that undervolting would get less performance, yes.

    • @pedrothevenard
      @pedrothevenard 8 лет назад +10

      Its Neight only if you underclock, what he is saying is that there is a margin where you can lower the voltage and keep the performance the same with lower temps which can actually improve slightly the performance without messing with anything else, that happens because the manufacturer provide the standard laptop with too much voltage for the current clock, so you can reduce that voltage without reducing the clock, voltage is only the fuel it don't add or subtract performance, the clock does, so your laptop will run cooler for longer and if you are having heating problems before the performance will actually improve, even though it seems strange, the ideal way to improve performance is increase voltage increase clock but for that you need to increase COOLING, and in a laptop that won't happen, so you just avoid overheating and get a few frames improvement in a few games with no drawbacks if you do it properly.

    • @peters.9371

      Also your question is a bit vague, a lot of it depends on what games you want to play and what you want to spend. That is a pretty good starting point though.
      You could also get something like the XPS 15 with a 960m if your expectations on gaming aren't too crazy and you want a smaller, lighter computer.

      Maxisu Exas the undervolt lasts forever, but if you are feeling picky you can replace thermal compound every 4 years which you don't need to do

      William Mayberry well, that's good. but still i don't know if it's worth the shot i've opened my laptop a lot but i've never played with the system before or even get to know what undervolting is. after all i don't really care to lower down the temperatures cuz my laptop is well cooled but the idea of making your laptop play games faster is pretty interesting.

      The software boost will stick until / unless something changes it back..
      The thermal paste it depends on what kind you get and use..
      Your normal quality type thermal paste (Think Noctua NT-H1 or ARCTIC MX-4) should be fine for the life of the laptop.. The ONLY time you would even think of bothering to reapply the thermal paste is if the temperatures start to go back up.. If they are not, then no reason to clean off perfectly good paste after any period of time.
      It is not the age of the paste that matters - It is the performance..
      If temperatures start to go back up after a year then open the Laptop out clean out the fans and after you take off the heatsink you put new paste on.
      ALWAYS use new paste after taking off the heatsink.. Do not take it off - see that it looks ok and just put the heatsink back on.. Always clean off the old paste and put on new. (So be prepared with new paste to replace old paste)
      One other thing.. Storing what is left over in the tube you get.. Do not pull the plunger back up as this will introduce air into the tube - Put CAP back on firmly then put the whole tube in say a zip lock back and remove all the air (does not need to be a complete vacuum just not all puffy)..
      This should keep for a few years.. You will know it is not good because it will be harder and dried out when you try to use it again..

      @@alarcomics4195 Speaking of buying a laptop in India is too expensive as compare to the US guys.
      My Acer nitro 5 get sold in US at $600 that is near ₹44k in Indian currency. However, I bought it at ₹60k (₹16k more; perhaps due to some taxes).
      Now, what could be bought at $600 in US is could be purchased at ₹11k in India. This is something called PPP (purchasing power parity) that is used to compare economy between two countries. So, it turns out that if I had been living in US I would have paid more than 5 times less for the same laptop than what I have paid in India. It also means Indians pay more taxes to buy a laptop than US people do to buy the whole machine. LMAO 😂😂🤣🤣🤣
      In US $3k will allow you to buy the same things you would have bought in India at ₹60k.
      I hope I was able to put some light towards the struggle our families make to buy us a laptop with even way lower annual income than the US families.
