If you watch some of the behind the scenes features, you’ll see why they only showed the monsters in quick flashes and shadows. Because when you see them in better lighting for more than a few seconds, they look more silly than scary. Better to show just enough to let your imagination run wild with how horrific they must be.

The Stephen King connection is even stronger now, since the covered bridge leading into Hobb's End now also appears in the big-screen adaptation of King's It. This film really is kind of a hidden gem. I do think, though, that it might've been the better choice to show the monsters only in little glimpses; you can't really convey the Lovecraftian idea of a monster that makes you insane if you see it in reality. We can imagine that the creatures are really bugshit insane-looking more easily if we just see glimpses.

Great review! Cody, if you haven't already seen these movies, I highly recommend
Wes Craven's The People Under the Stairs
Wes Craven's The Serpeant and the Rainbow
    John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness
George A. Romero's The Dark Half (Stephen King adaptation), which was similar to Secret Window (2004)
David Cronenberg's The Dead Zone (1983) (Stephen King adaptation)
    Jacob's Ladder (1990) - Tim Robbin's 2nd best movie behind Shawshank Redemption
    Desperation (2006) (Stephen King adaptation)
Needful Things (1993) (Stephen King adaptation)
The Langoliers (1995) (Stephen King adaptation)
They're all amazing and criminally underrated movies.

It not really a nod to Stephen King, but to H.P. Lovecraft. Although King is heavily Lovecraft influenced as well ;). Many names are pulled out of Lovecraft novels like Pickman. Or the Books of Sutter Cane "The Whisperer in the Dark" = "The Whisperer in the Darkness" and so on every one of those books is a Lovecraft reference. Anyways like your review, pretty good quality and all.

Great analysis Cody, and that intro was perfect!! It's nice to see someone love this movie as much as I do. Between the frequency of me watching my copy and also how often I've loaned it around to get my horror friends indoctrinated, I've literally worn my copy out. It's such a great movie. All of the Lovecraft Easter eggs in it are wonderful.

The opening credits with the kick-ass metal music and the printing press gets me pumped too. Pretty much everything thing about this movie is great. From the old man on the bike. To the female contortionist to the old woman with the axe. It's a great ride. Yes. I've always wanted to see more of the ancient ones. But unfortunatelyI it came down to time and money as the reason why that scene was cut short. It still doesn't ruin the movie though because it only leaves you wanting more

I really don´t get why in every review people think that the monsters should have been shown more.
On every Lovecraft story the monsters are seen like for a second or don´t even get a description, to show you the impact that just his presence has on the protagonist. They don´t need to do anything to drive you mad or destroy the natural order as you know it, just be there for you to see them for half a second. Lovecraftian beings are not about being flashy or showing themselves, they are about the impact they have for only existing and have little interactions with our world.
I get that is a common thing when you talk about monster movies/stories, that you want to know how they look an their powers and everything, but man is a lovecraftian like movie, you can´t expect the same things that you see in a movie like "The Thing" where the monster can only do physical harm.
Also some people say that some things are too little expkained or shown and they don´t get it is done on purppose, because when you get to know well a thing, it needs to be aplied logic to it so you understand it as a viewer and atomatically loses the "fear of the unknow" that Lovecraft is remembered for.
    Loved the review btw
PS: sorry if im hard to read, english is not my primary lenguage and don´t get to use it a lot where i live

    OHMIGOSH I LOOOOOOOOOOOOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!
The only… _only…_ downside to this movie is that there are no *Sutter Cane* novels in real life! I mean, they missed out on potentially a _massive_ cash-cow by not releasing an official novelisation of the movie, with the author listed as *Sutter Cane!*

Awesome movie and awesome review. The most experimental movie of Carpenter and one of the best Lovecraft's unofficial adaptation. Tmhy, Hobb's end could refer as well to some cities invented by Lovecraft, Arkham,or Insmouth, from which King took inspiration to create his Castle Rock and Derry places. I remember an interview of Carpenter on a French movie newspapers speaking of his intent to pay tribute to Lovecraft, which he was stating is less famous in USA than the great Stephen King.

@ Cody you have a nice little list here, and kudos to you +5 cool points even :) for reviewing this unknown gem and Prince of Darkness.... But you SERIOUSLY need to review Escape from NY the THING remake and Big Trouble in Little China for your john Carpenter series to be complete..... as Halloween aside Escape from NY is his second best film to many of us fans, and Big Trouble in Little China one of his most beloved. An EVEN with Halloween to many the THING remake is his best film JC ever did.... I hope to see you add those 3 over this an next year Cody to complete this series. :) An ty for the time, spotlight for this gem.

New to the channel, basically discovered WeWatchedAMovie, DrumDums and yourself all within the past month ( I know, living under a rock right?). Definitely enjoy your takes on these films and have been going back through your channel history.
And on the topic of this movie: it has suffered a tremendously unfair passing over and I have NEVER understood that. I first caught this movie when I was a kid , right after it hit VHS and was infatuated with it from the time I first saw the trailer on TV. One of my all-time favorites, along with Prince of Darkness ( i know that one didn't fair as well with ya, but maybe it'll grow on you lol)
Keep up the great work my friend!

It's too bad that there isn't as much special features that I would've liked for there to be on the recent Shout Factory edition that just came out. However, there are some cool behind the scenes stuff with seeing more of the monsters and a new commentary with Carpenter.

About the monsters at the end it was kind of your mixture of your first and second idea. For one these creatures are clear lovecraftian monsters and to just stop and look at them will break sanity instantly. Also with so many monsters and people using animatronics and puppets had to be with the creatures to see them moving. If you freeze the image you'll likely see the effects guys pushing the wall of monsters

I have been a horror fanatic my entire life, so I don’t get scared. I was terrified!! The music, the story, the monsters, the concept.. perfection. I remember sneaking in to my parents room just to see them sleeping to feel somewhat safe. I own this movie and I’ve made everyone watch it lol. Every single time I see a bike rider at night I say, “In the Mouth of Madness.” Out loud. That bike rider is creepy as shit!! I love everything about this film. The years of 1994 and 1986 in my list of years in horror cinema were held with Wes Craven's new nightmare and Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 in their place. They are both very great movies but admittedly they were weaker entries for the list (not based on the movies themselves, just the credibility I have for them in these places). That wasn't until this and The Hitcher came in, the former I saw a few months ago, the latter I say a few days ago. This is fun to compare because of what they had in common on my list. They both filled in with much worthier entries and they both managed to become my favorite films of specific Horror-Hybrid genres (In the Mouth of Madness being Horror Fantasy, The Hitcher being Horror Crime)

Damn so I just watched in the mouth of madness for the first time an it is probably my second favorite John carpenter film if I had not grown up with Halloween an been such a huge fan of the whole franchise it would be my favorite. Can't believe it just dethroned the thing for my second favorite but it is just such a crazy film with so many twist an turns an an amazing story great movie. After I watch the thing again it will be my second favorite again. Maybe plan on watching in the mouth of madness a couple more times to really be sure but as of now I love it start to finish incredible.

Personally, this movie did nothing for me and was very forgettable, but I'm glad you enjoyed!
