My personal favorite standalone horror movie is Dog Soldiers. It’s one of the most underrated werewolf movies out there. I would love to see you make a review on it too.

Deep Rising is a movie I'm surprised never got a follow up. That was a fun late '90s horror with a great cast, setting & interesting creature design. It even set up a sequel with the ending but nothing ever came of it. I'll have to check out some of the movies on your list as well Cody. The Faculty is one I first remember seeing at the drive-in theatre back in the day, always loved that film since.
The second half of the 90s had a pretty fun monster-era: The Relic, Mimic, Starship Troopers, The Mummy, Deep Rising, Phantoms, Lake Placid, Bats, Species, Anaconda...the list goes on. Truly an awesome time.
Adam M it was actually supposed to be a spin off to King Kong and skull island was the island they landed on but they never continued it and rebooted with King Kong 2005
Great list Cody! Trick R Treat is my favorite stand-alone/anthology horror film. It’s got a classic horror icon (Sam), some nice twists, and a great vibe throughout.
In the burning, The raft scene always scares me by how brutal it was. Nobody had a chance, not even the fit guy Eddy. Also the fact that only Woodstocks mangled body was found scared me. Cropsy did that off screen. Where did Eddy Fish and the two girls go? Their bodies weren’t shown. Thoughts like these keep me up at night
The Burning fucking scarred me when I was a kid 😂 I watched it in my doorway (was supposed to be in bed I was 8) and the raft scene scared the shit out of me 😂 love it to this day, fun slasher!
Frailty is awesome. Genuinely creepy. Great cast. The kids who played Fenton and Adam were good. Their chemistry will Bill was perfect. And the twists. 10/10
My favorite standalone horror flick has got to be The Witch. I haven't watched in awhile, but I had a stretch of time where I was OBSESSED with this movie. It doesn't have the normal scares and horror style, but the tension and atmosphere is so eerie and anxiety inducing that it provides a brilliant viewing experience.
I agree and I've heard people say it's a slow burn kind of film. To which I always respond they don't understand the tension and suspense that the film carries. No film is perfect, but that one is close.
The Faculty was a great box office success; I have no idea why they never revisited this movie and made a sequel. They could have really explored the origin of the alien species with Josh Hartnett and Elijah Wood coming back; they were more charismatic and interesting out of the whole cast, but I also think “The Faculty” works as a standalone. I’m glad they’ve never remade this 90s masterpiece because it still hold up really well with the cast and special effects.
Love seeing Behind the Mask on your list, one of my fav comedy horror movies. And Near Dark, one of my all time favorites period. My list would include Event Horizon, Triangle, and Tucker and Dale vs. Evil. Also, I've always wanted you to do a review of Triangle (2009). I love people trying to explain and rationalize this one.
Cody man, love your choices but I was saddened by one thing: you didn't include 1980's The Changeling with George C. Scott. Hands down, best haunted house movie ever made. If you haven't seen it, make it next on your list. It definitely stands out as one of the best horror movies ever made and also a good murder mystery too.

Great video, Cody. Couple here I'm gonna go pick up this weekend, and a couple I own that will be be re-watched soon. I think my kid and I will watch Frailty this weekend, and the Exorcist, because he really wants to see that. Also, we are gonna check out your Patreon later and pledge, not for any perks, but because you deserve it.
A lot of good movies on this list (I think I've seen all but two of them). "Behind the Mask" is one of my all-time favorites. I didn't actually like "It Follows" all that much, but I definitely appreciated how it was so completely different from anything I'd seen before. The "tall fucker" is one of the best jump-scares ever.
The Burning, along with My Bloody Valentine, is one of the few stand-alone 80's slashers that very much feels like it could have spawned an iconic franchise alongside Freddy and Jason
that one is such an underrated movie with Near Dark, Stir of Echoes, Session 9, the Burning they are absolutely adored by fans of their perspective subgenre. Dead Silence is just seen as that other movie made by the director that made Saw, Insidious, and the Conjuring.
The Burning is one of my all time favorites. Incredibly underrated and not spoken about enough. Very great effects, a scary villain, good characters, and a movie that isn’t afraid to go there.
Great list! Tough to make one here, because so many I want to include have like one, super subpar straight to DVD sequel (Vacancy, The Descent, The Strangers, American Psycho, Martyrs, etc.)...but below is what I came up with: 1. The Witch 2. Midsommar 3. The Invitation 4. Get Out 5. Black Swan 6. The Orphanage 7. The House of the Devil 8. Lamb 9. The Lighthouse 10. Hereditary
The Loved Ones is fucking insane but was such a underrated gem so thanks for the recommendation in one of your previous videos😃 Couldn't agree more about Behind the Mask and The Faculty. I would throw Vicious Fun out there for a recent one, dumb but entertaining! Great video as usual Cody, keep up the great content😁😁

Dr. Giggles. Imagine the franchise; he could have full on laughed. The Burning also has (very noticeably) Jason Alexander and (less so) Holly Hunter. If I remember correctly Stir of Echoes came out at the same time as Stigmata, and SOE got the good reviews, while Stigmata got the box office. The Faculty was fun... but it ended pretty cleanly, with them knowing how to kill the alien, so a sequel would be... the kids just going around doing the alien killing?
There are references in Cabin in the Woods that might refer to The Faculty at the beginning and at the start of the Faculty it seems to refer to someone showing up at the school right before everything starts. Also Stakeland is a underrated vampire movie as well but was not a standalone
90% of the movies on your list are on mine, but I would put The Others and Misery on my list, The Others is one of the most awesome, underrated horror movies ever with an amazing twist ending. Love it if you watch it and review it one day because it's awesome.
hey cody, I FINALLY watched STIR OF ECHOES based on how many times you've recommended it in various videos. I definitely remember the ads for it back in the day as a kid. I really enjoyed it. the tension was awesome. I don't really view it as a true horror movie. it's more thriller, but it was a great movie. watching it as a parent had me emotional at moments, especially with two young daughters. when he tracks the babysitter to the train station, oh man I was flipping out in my mind at that babysitter. it's a tragic but captivating ghost story.
Cody this is an excellent list. The top 4 are amazing films. Frailty and the facility and Near Dark and all three in my own library as well as the Loved Ones. Such good films and each are different . Frailty sticks with you though and you just can’t shake it. The acting and cast is top notch in this flick. One of my all time favorite horror movies.
Lots of great picks here, especially The Loved Ones and It Follows for me. I haven't seen Behind the Mask, The Burning, Near Dark and The Faculty somehow, have to remedy that soon!
OMG- I want that shirt! San Dimas Football Rules! Great list- there were a few I've never seen that I'll be checking out this weekend. I was really surprised that "You're Next" wasn't on your list though. Session 9 is a movie I absolutely love. I actually lived 2 towns over from Danvers where the Asylum was located. I always wanted to go in but they had security all over that place. The actual asylum is gone now- it's all been made itno apartments and the only thing remaining is the front face of the building and the secret tunnels hidden throughout the grounds. Great pick with Frailty. Such an awesome movie that flew under the radar.
All excellent horror films. Some definite personal favs. Frailty is amazing, R.I.P Bill Paxton. Love The Faculty, it's really rewatchable for me. Cabin in the Woods has one of the best scenes in modern horror. Near Dark classic vamp film. Raft scene, enough said. Rented Session 9 at the video store back in the day and found a gem. Behind the Mask is such a great hidden gem, I need the mask for my collection. Stir of Echos shines in a world of too many ghost films. So many great horror films, it's so hard to make favs lists. I'm 47, loved horror for as long as I can remember. Our whole house is horror film themed. I love a very very wide variety of horror and have favs in almost every sub genre. Keep up the sweet vids Cody! 🤘
I was hoping that Cujo would’ve made your list, I mean a St.Bernard being such a gentle giant turned rabid is still one of my favs to watch. Great stand alone movie, no sequel or remake needed for this one .

I always enjoy seeing how much you champion Leslie Vernon and Cabin in the Woods. I’ve always thought those were a very nice additions to “new” horror movies. Both made me smile so much, along with Tucker and Dale
Loved Ones is amazing, like Pretty in Pink meets Hostel. Yo Cody, awesome video! Just a head up that there is a sequel to Stir of Echos. I think it’s got Christian Slater (Use him to replace Kevin Bacon quite a bit!) keep up the good work man!
Glad to see behind the mask on here. One of my favorite hidden gem horror movies for someone looking for something unique in a slasher movie. Tucker and dale vs evil is also a great newer horror comedy, but it's definitely much more comedy than horror
Great call on Session 9. I was obsessed with that movie for years. My top 10 standalone horrors (no sequels or remakes, not based on any previously published source material) in no order: The Changeling Session 9 Clean, Shaven Tourist Trap Cure Antichrist Carnival of Souls The Devil's Backbone The Orphanage Ravenous
My favourite standalones are 1. Scary stories to tell in the dark 2. Drag me to hell 3. Shutter 4. Mama 5. Countdown 6. Truth or Dare 7. Polaroid 8. The Faculty 9. Freaky 10. The Eye 11. Knowing 12. Super 8 13. 1408 These are not in a correct order.. Cody, if u didnt watch these before try please.. you gonna love it.. biggest fan ❤️💯
Great video! Question, have you ever seen What We Do In The Shadows? (2014) Its a very funny vampire mockumentary made by Taika Waititi, which I never hear anyone talk about. Personally I would say it is on my top 50 movies.
Session 9 is a fantastic under rated horror movie, the whole cast does a fantastic job keeping you fixed to the story. Same with Stir of Echoes, what an amazing film, I feel it suffered because it came out just after 6th sence and got lost in the hype about the other films twist ending.
It's not crazy to say Near Dark is actually a better film than Lost Boys. That bar scene alone is so undeniably awesome and better than any part of Lost Boys... And I grew up with Lost Boys as one of my all time favorites
Awesome list Cody! Pretty hard one to make because there are quite a few good standalone horror movies. I totally agree with your number 1. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve shown Frailty to for the first time.
FUCK YES!!!! SESSION 9!!! Such a great movie, very underrated! "I live in the weak and the wounded, Doc." Great list man! Frailty is awesome. First seen it when it came out on DVD, and it blew me away. Paxton was amazing.
one of my favorite Bill Paxton roles is in near dark. idk for sure but I know he did it around the same time as aliens and that's amazing. he chewed the scenery in both
Awesome list man! Sadly, I’ve seen all these so I can’t experience any for the first time lol. Being a music lover, I’m surprised you didn’t mention the score in “It Follows” I thought it was wicked.
One movie that always comes to mind as being a one and done idea that was franchised is The Purge... But its the VERY RARE exception where I think exploring the outside world in the sequels worked in its favour instead of staying as a home invasion film. Great concept... but it is a one and done idea. (Just make the second movie the 'one and done'!)
Frailty is one of my favorite movies of all time. I love that you really like Near Dark. That movie has a special place in my heart as it came out when I was a pre-teen and I have a special nostalgia for that film. RIP Bill Paxton.
Dan Stevens' performance in The Guest is so layered that it should have earned him an Oscar nomination. Even when they confirm that he's evil, you still kind of like the guy.
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is one of my favourite horror movies. The shift from documentary footage to actual movie is inspired and absolutely perfectly done.
I've been enlightened that apparently there was a Stir of Echoes 2 that went straight to DVD with Rob Lowe.
Yeah...were gonna pretend that doesn't exist...

Your top 3 is perfect. I’ve told so many people about Frailty who’ve never heard of it.
Hell yeah The Faculty Josh Hartnett as Zeke one of the best characters ever created and of course Frailty and the ending, God will protect me 😁.
What about The Skeleton Key? This standalone movie is awsome
Underrated ending 👍🏿
I have heard of some of these but now going watch them this week thanks man
Glad to see behind the mask on here. One of my favorite hidden gem horror movies for someone looking for something unique in a slasher movie. Tucker and dale vs evil is also a great newer horror comedy, but it's definitely much more comedy than horror
Dude total props for bringing up Session 9. I watched it when I worked at a video store and loved it.
Always enjoy seeing some love for The Faculty! One of my favourites.
Great call on Session 9. I was obsessed with that movie for years. My top 10 standalone horrors (no sequels or remakes, not based on any previously published source material) in no order:
The Changeling
Session 9
Clean, Shaven
Tourist Trap
Cure
Antichrist
Carnival of Souls
The Devil's Backbone
The Orphanage
Ravenous
My favourite standalones are
1. Scary stories to tell in the dark
2. Drag me to hell
3. Shutter
4. Mama
5. Countdown
6. Truth or Dare
7. Polaroid
8. The Faculty
9. Freaky
10. The Eye
11. Knowing
12. Super 8
13. 1408
These are not in a correct order..
Cody, if u didnt watch these before try please.. you gonna love it.. biggest fan ❤️💯
Thank you for letting us know of The Loved Ones. Just seen it thanks to you and it was excellent 👍
I knew you got a new camera, much sharper! Thank you so much, Cody. I hope this new camera is a cool new piece of tech for you to experiment with!
Great video! Question, have you ever seen What We Do In The Shadows? (2014) Its a very funny vampire mockumentary made by Taika Waititi, which I never hear anyone talk about. Personally I would say it is on my top 50 movies.
Weird I remember it being talked about a lot when it came out it even got a spin off series that has gone for 3 series
@@aaronrumph3291 ah I wasn't active on RUclips at the time it came out. Maybe I just haven't come across it yet
Session 9 is a fantastic under rated horror movie, the whole cast does a fantastic job keeping you fixed to the story. Same with Stir of Echoes, what an amazing film, I feel it suffered because it came out just after 6th sence and got lost in the hype about the other films twist ending.
The Faculty is definitely my fav of those "post Scream" movies. Its just a awesome flick.
It's not crazy to say Near Dark is actually a better film than Lost Boys. That bar scene alone is so undeniably awesome and better than any part of Lost Boys... And I grew up with Lost Boys as one of my all time favorites
You’re Next was another solid stand-alone!
Give me Stir of Echoes any day over The Sixth Sense!!!
I'm actually really glad that The Faculty never got a sequel. I really don't see how you could improve on that movie's premise.
"I live in the weak and the wounded, Doc."
Great list man! Frailty is awesome. First seen it when it came out on DVD, and it blew me away. Paxton was amazing.
1. Misery (1990)
2. The Sixth Sense (1999)
3. Trick R’ Treat (2007)
4. The Burning (1980)
5. The Prowler (1981)
My Bloody Valentine is the most underrated horror/slasher movie. You have to review that one!
one of my favorite Bill Paxton roles is in near dark. idk for sure but I know he did it around the same time as aliens and that's amazing. he chewed the scenery in both
I was hoping Behind the Mask would be on your list. Such an underrated film that I wish would have gotten a (much deserved) sequel.
Session 9 takes place in Danvers, MA a few towns over from where I live. It’s a real place.
The burning really really really scared me and I’m glad I’ve ever had to deal with a sequel
Awesome list man! Sadly, I’ve seen all these so I can’t experience any for the first time lol. Being a music lover, I’m surprised you didn’t mention the score in “It Follows” I thought it was wicked.
Great picks! I haven’t seen a good amount of these so I’m excited to dive in
Watching The Faculty for the first time ever based on your recommendation. The cast is a who's who of the 1990's!
Near Dark is super cool, it came out the same year as Lost Boys. '87 was a good year for vampire movies.
Some glaring omissions:
- Get out
- The Mist
Some honourable mentions:
- Tusk
- Chained
- The Poughkeepsie tapes
One movie that always comes to mind as being a one and done idea that was franchised is The Purge... But its the VERY RARE exception where I think exploring the outside world in the sequels worked in its favour instead of staying as a home invasion film. Great concept... but it is a one and done idea. (Just make the second movie the 'one and done'!)
THANKS for including The Burning, I like it to this day.
Frailty is one of my favorite movies of all time. I love that you really like Near Dark. That movie has a special place in my heart as it came out when I was a pre-teen and I have a special nostalgia for that film. RIP Bill Paxton.
The Guest is an amazing horror film that's so freaking entertaining.
That made me love Dan Stevens
Dan Stevens' performance in The Guest is so layered that it should have earned him an Oscar nomination. Even when they confirm that he's evil, you still kind of like the guy.
yeah that movie had no right to be as good as it was
My Blood Valentine is in my top 10 but I'm definitely going to check out alot of the movies you talked about. I've only seen 2 of them
So happy I just found your channel! Actually really interested to know if The Lodge made your top 17 list!
The Loved Ones is one of the great movies that doesn’t get mentioned enough. Such an amazing movie imo
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is one of my favourite horror movies. The shift from documentary footage to actual movie is inspired and absolutely perfectly done.
Everything about Session 9 was brilliant. Especially acting.
I love Frailty! I'm glad you appreciate that movie as much as I do!
Session 9 is criminally underrated. Plus it heavily inspired the aesthetics and scares of Silent Hill 3, one of the greatest horror games of all time.
