Prince of Darkness (1987) - Movie Review

  • Continuing John Carpenter's Apocalypse Trilogy, Prince of Darkness is the chapter that I have the least experience with. A melding of quantum physics and the eternal concepts of God and his counterpoint, Prince of Darkness is one of John Carpenter's more ambitious movies. Does the ambition pay off or does this apocalyptic chapter in Carpenter's filmography merit the obscurity?

This for me is Carpenter's best movie. The Thing is close second best. It gripped me from the start. The ideas posed in the beginning with physics and philosophy. And the movies builds up just like the shinning to a slow crescendo until the end where pace goes up to a manic pace. Loved it. Soundtrack is the best.

This movie came out in theaters when I was 15, and was one of the first horror movies I saw at the theater. It scared the shit out of me. One of the things I have always found that added to the sense of dread was the occasional exterior shots of the church, after the group had been trapped inside. The church was not in some isolated setting, off by itself...It was in the middle of a downtown area (a large, high-rise building was usually in the shot with the front of the church) with people around (ostensibly). Help should have been within shouting distance. Yet, they were surrounded by the army of the damned, cut off, alone, having to face this horror. For some reason, I found that to be one of the most disturbing elements of the movie. In the years since, I have come to be able to see its flaws, and can understand how many Carpenter fans don't hold this one in as high esteem as other movies of his.

That broadcast is the freakiest thing I've seen, and I've some fucked up shit, but what does it for me is the subtlety and the progression of what's being said, like a dream I want to wake up from before I get a horrific surprise..... That alone makes this film extremely watchable

The first time I saw this, I had fallen asleep on my friends' couch with the TV on. They had gone to bed, and I woke up during one of the dream sequences. That started me off on a very weird footing that has probably colored the way I've thought about this movie and raised my estimation of it possibly higher than it deserves.

I watched this one on the tv when I was a kid in the 90's and was terrified. Characters are not really the point here, they are there to show you the effects of them slowly being possesed by this darkness, i guess it's all about the atmosphere but i agree that it gets a bit wonky sometimes.

great video, cody. I really agree with your take, it's not a bad movie by any means, but I do think it suffers from some weak points that cause for some rough edges, but all around good film in general. Wish we knew the characters more; although I do really enjoy the scientific take as a science nerd though, it's quite unique and super ambitious for a movie like this, but I can understand why that weighs it down a bit. I ended up watching these in backwards order as well, cannot wait to see The Thing for the first time.

I haven't seen anything online about the infamous "Black Aggie" statue that appears in the first scene where the priest goes to the church. Just inside the gate and to the left, the statue is shown and he looks at it. It is also seen in every shot of the courtyard. Was this the actual statue or just a reproduction of it? I'm guessing Carpenter was intrigued by it and put it into the movie.

    • @Rachelle79

No, she wasn't pregnant. That was the Satan Juice in her stomach. It then breaks down and is absorbed into her system. I always thought she was "chosen" because of her metabolism. She's very skinny and in nearly every scene she's in, she's eating or drinking something. Perfect for a liquid based entity that wants to rapidly take over it's host and get on with an apocalypse!

This is definitely an underrated gem, but it’s _begging_ for more fleshing out & greater clarity; it’s not always clear what’s going on, or even what’s being _said_ in dialogue (it’s a movie that benefits greatly from giving a viewer the option of subtitles/closed captions)!
    Maybe just increasing the run-time from 1h 40m to a full 2h would've helped 🤷🏻‍♀️

  • @ChuckM0503

I agree the movie is just okay. The main thing that brings it down to me is the cast. With the exception of Victor Wong, and Donald Pleasence the cast just isn't very good or likable. A lot of that has to do with the writing, but even if it was better I don't think the actors involved would deliver the goods.

The movie feels like its a giant movie of Filler. So much of it is like..... Get to the point.
I have no problem with slower movies but i think it just wasn't executed properly. They kept acting like the green liquid was going to become something, just to possess some girl and make her look like a zombie.
It felt like everything goes nowhere real fast. (I like Endings where the protagonists get the shaft) But this literally ends in a way that pretty much says "This was all pointless"

Saw this film when it originally came out. Saw it with my bros. I think it's entertaining- as a low-budget B movie. My friends and I laughed through most of the movie, although there are some interesting scenes where the creep factor is dialed to eleven. The thing that hurts the movie the most is the concepts. There is no cohesion or connective tissue that ties it all together. It will never make sense because it doesn't make sense. it's a bunch of pseudo-sciences, and ideas pulled out of a hat. For example- everyone has this recurring dream about a broadcast from the future. Someone lurks in the shadows. What is the broadcast? Why is it important? Why does everyone have dreams of this? The video image of the shadow lurking in the background of what appears to be an apocalyptic wasteland with a creepy voice saying this is a broadcast... yet, there is no resolution. It's a creepy sequence that, on the surface, looks creepy and cool, but when looking inside, its hollow and empty. It means nothing. The concepts are weak and don't work. But everyone being taken over and turning into monsters is fun to watch, and the production looks great, and the centerpiece: A man-size glass tube trapping a swirling green liquid, that's supposed to be... Satan? or the new antichrist?, and yet, Saten is inside of a mirror? So, is the antichrist in the Big glass jar, or is he in the mirror? It simply amounts to gibberish. The movie had potential but ultimately fails in its ideas. But, for whatever reason, it's fun to watch people vomit green liquid into other people's mouths, and that's disgustingly great. The alley scenes are also great. The one who has a message, a message they "aren't going to like" I was like, yes, finally some answers, Nope. The creepypasta guy simply gurgles and says, "Youre all going to die." That was such an anticlimax. At least the visuals look great. 3 out of 5 stars

There is something about people randomly standing still staring that is really creepy. In books and movies. I remember finding this creepier than any other Carpenter film. The Thing is a different class of movie altogether and Halloween will always be nostalgic for me. I think this could be a fun gritty remake. But of course Donald Pleasance is a campy drama queen pleasure. But yeah, characters could have used work. I always quite liked the scary end of the lead female.

Come on, Cody, no Carpenter film is as creepy as _The Thing,_ and _In the Mouth of Madness_ is probably as creepy as _Prince of Darkness,_ but there's no question that this is very freaky--it's John Carpenter, so there's going to be some outre stuff (don't forget _They Live,_ which is very weird in its own right).

It's really not bad. Although it's nowhere near greatness. 6.5/10

I've enjoyed this movie since I first saw this in theaters. It's a different John Carpenter film than Halloween or The Thing. Despite the lack character development, I still find the story engaging. I do agree with you about the score Cody, its played too much throughout the movie where it should only been played in certain parts in the movie. I always try to watch it it's on.

The movie does have a lot of issues that keep it from being great, but overall its very effective in being scary and captivating.

I really wanted to like this one, but goddamn it, I just couldn't take it seriously. One of Carpenter's clumsier efforts, unfortunately.

I hate when people watch these movies with new eyes expecting to be wowed. I watched it at 8 years old in the 80s with friends and it scared us good lol
I love this movie and the vibe it gives all these years later

I fucking love this movie, it may be in my top 5 Carpenter films. It's not without it's flaws, but I almost don't care because the atmosphere is so great. The score is also massively underrated.

I missed it at the theatre back in the days and at this point, that's one of my biggest regrets in life (I luckily don't have many).
The idea of trying to fight a supernatural power through science is a unique approach and I still love that although some of the physic explanations they give are above my head.
I didn't like the "closet" scene with Dennis Dun which was just ridiculous and (said it before and will keep doing it) I always wonder how long do people study in the US? Those students look OLD.
You're wrong about the score though, it ceased after we see Catherine on the other side of the mirror when the Priest broke it and I always thought that silence symbolizes the evil power being forced out of our world.
Love Lisa Blount (R.I.P.) since I first saw her in Dead & Buried.

Made it 11:22 after all this insanity of not knowing who the comic-relief is and so many other things he got so wrong, he then goes after the score?? I'm out!

the soundtrack is superb! unfortunately the film is not. nondescript characters, inane dialogue, vacuous pacing, alice cooper is cool and i like some cinematography, but thats it. move along, move along!
