Ireland has always had a high standard when it came to music. Unfortunately, in the past, you had to leave the country and go to the UK to get anywhere. Luckily, these days, artists are staying in the country and building up scenes in their towns and cities.
They remind me of Cranes. Love their sound. Out of all these New shoegaze bands, Just Mustard manages to stand out. They bring something new to the table. They don't just copy and paste.
The guitar work is influenced by shoegaze textures and techniques but I would not call this shoegaze since shoegaze bands tended to drown the songs under layers of guitars while the guitar in this band leaves much more space and at times resembles more the way post punk bands work with guitars which tends to be more economical and precise while controlling the feedback. Also the vocals here are more upfront while in shoegaze the vocals are more drowned under the guitars and are often treated as just one more texture
If there was an award for the hardest working Irish band these would get it. Absolutely FKN amazing to see them on KEXP. Fabulous set, what a sound!!!!!!!!!!! Next stop, global domination.
Talk about a wasted chance for an interview for such a unique band. Pointless questions about other bands and clubs but ignoring anything related to their sound, inspiration, process ... please Troy.
He is. There’s uniqueness, style and finesse in his drum parts. Serves the music perfectly, yet without shadowing himself, providing interesting parts, especially in songs like Still. Just mustard no bs like mayo or ketchup kinda drumming there.
I kind of love the imperfections of her singing. She does become a bit flat at times, but it suits the cold and detached tone of their music. Reminds me of the first time I heard Cranes' "Starblood". It's close to being pretty or ethereal, but there is such a suspenseful and unsettling nature that makes it stand out.
I don't know the history here but I definitely feel a close kinship between their sound and Cranes, not just the vocals but the atmospheric element of the instrumentation as well.
I love their sound, definitely a super interesting take on shoegaze! The contrast between their cold, borderline industrial sound and Katie's angelic vocals is so cool. Another amazing live sessions from KEXP (thanks so much for the work you guys are doing btw). The band seems so shy, but Troy did a great job in his interview as always ^^
Wow - great intense sound with a lot room to dive in. Great to hear that you used the last 4 years for trying new sounds and Still will be on my personal this year's single charts as Pigs was in 2018. Looking forward to see you in Munich on october!
Lovely to see a band from Dundalk on Kexp!! Troy asked how they knew Fontaines DC…..Dundalk is only a 45 minute train ride to Dublin,so the music in that area of Ireland is easily connected. Dundalk sits in between Dublin and Belfast and both cities are easy to connect on the Indie scene. I would also recommend Melts from Dublin as another fantastic band. 👍🇪🇺🇮🇪
Once again the Fender Telecaster shows itself to be an awesomely flexible instrument in the right hands. I'm thinking of starting up a tribute band called "Hold the Ketchup."
Fantastic sound and songcraft! And a great interplay of voice, effects, and lines. I really enjoyed seeing the intensity in person. (Though I wish the dj had asked them about their art, rather than who they'd played with.)
Great band, saw them this weekend at Tramlines festival. They are truly unique. Shout-out to the guitar pedal manufacturers that help them get their guitar sounds.
people don’t realize that the off-key singing is meant to be on purpose lol 😭 it’s probably not for everyone but i think it gives it this super eerie and cool effect
It's obvious that it's a stylistic choice if the listener pays attention. In the second number of this set, she clearly sings a conventional melody with ease at the beggining.
Like they've never heard of Kim Gordon ... cause they're perfectly square! HAIL ERIS - ALL HAIL DISCORDIA! Long live the outsiders. I hear smacks of early Bjork and Bianca Casady in her voice, which means I like it a lot!
How about next time you “have them back” you do them honest and actually talk about their music and writing process. One of the most creative and artistic bands in the world right now in terms of sonic craftsmanship, who have sculpted their tone time and time again to bring a fresh and new take on noise/shoegaze/alternative. Ya dropped the ball on this one KEXP. Peoples tastes are literally miles behind what Just Mustard are doing musically and when it catches up with them, it will hit them like a truck.
Love these guys. Chat leaves something to be desired. "What was it like being asked to open for The Cure by The Cure????" "Yeah it was good." (silence). Lucky the music is 10/10 heh
Does anyone recognize any of the pedals they’re using? Specifically which moog pedal he’s using on the last song? I know they both use the count to five
Ahh I knew I recognized those blue pedals! I'll give it a shot. Black jaguar guitarist seems to have: an ernie ball volume, TU-2, Marshall Guv'nor, Count to 5 and Behringer Vintage Time machine on the top. The bottom there's a black four knob pedal I don't recognize, ehx soul food, I think two digitech digidelays and an ehx cathedral verb. Not sure on the center pedal. Red Tele doesn't get as well lit a board close up but that Moogerfooger is the ring modulator, there's a quick shot of the rear panel that proves it. Otherwise I can only really tell the count to 5, cathedral, a boss digital delay and maybe a way huge pedal (based on the big ol knobs)
Wow, in these comments is the big difference between constructive criticism and criticism just for fucking. There are ways friends, if you want to express that you don't like something, you must do it with respect. For me, I would love these guys to give a concert in my country, their new album is quite good, keep going so guys, don't listen to the stupid and unsubstantiated criticism
The more you try to compare them to another band, the further you get from being able to label what Just Mustard is. Cocteau Twins, Title Fight, Cranes, Sonic Youth, MBV, Slowdive, Cure and King Krule. Mix it all in a blender and you'll get something close to JM

Ireland must be proud right now with all these good bands thriving
Hell yeah, both these guys and Fontaines D.C. pop into mind
Ireland has always had a high standard when it came to music.

Luckily, these days, artists are staying in the country and building up scenes in their towns and cities.
@@Irishmuffcabbagyurtvery true. Im shocked to hear they are Irish. They deafened me at Depeche Mode. 1st Irish band ive ever seen. Wow!
Wow, they made it to KEXP that's insane.
So proud of them! Up fucking Ireland and up Dundalk
They remind me of Cranes. Love their sound. Out of all these New shoegaze bands, Just Mustard manages to stand out. They bring something new to the table. They don't just copy and paste.
Yes, the Cranes, was exactly what I thought too.
Indeed reminiscent of Cranes they are but extreme. Cranes however are still more beautiful ...with piano, keys and acoustic guitars
Chiming in and endorsing the Cranes vibe, yes. With maybe a Joy Division flavor, too, in terms of the sound being very 'clean" - no fuzz.
Similar ao Cranes@@glennmercer191
Probably the most inventive Shoegaze band out there right now - feels fresh and unique whilst being hauntingly familiar.
They are really good and have a beautiful sound, still sounds a lot like Cranes to me so I wouldn´t go with totally new inventive. Still a great band.
Album of the year from these guys, incredible sound, love them

Absolutely FKN amazing to see them on KEXP.
Fabulous set, what a sound!!!!!!!!!!! Next stop, global domination.
i saw them last weekend and it was the best thing i've ever seen live. and I saw 3 hours of the cure right after them
guitar tones are MENTAL!
New fan .
There's no other mustard like this.
Talk about a wasted chance for an interview for such a unique band. Pointless questions about other bands and clubs but ignoring anything related to their sound, inspiration, process ... please Troy.
"you've played with other bands?" "...yep."
"and someone takes your photos for you? "...yep."
"alright, that's our time today at KEXP."
I thought the same thing!! Horrible interviewer!
Maybe Troy was nervous because the singer is fine as hell.
The drummer is amazing IMHO
He is. There’s uniqueness, style and finesse in his drum parts. Serves the music perfectly, yet without shadowing himself, providing interesting parts, especially in songs like Still. Just mustard no bs like mayo or ketchup kinda drumming there.
one of my new favorite bands they're so good... plus I think I love her
Me fascinaron, que chido que vienen pronto a México
I kind of love the imperfections of her singing. She does become a bit flat at times, but it suits the cold and detached tone of their music. Reminds me of the first time I heard Cranes' "Starblood". It's close to being pretty or ethereal, but there is such a suspenseful and unsettling nature that makes it stand out.
Alison Statton from Young Marble Giants comes to mind
Trying to book them now for my wedding
love her vox, she sounds like the singer from Cranes
I don't know the history here but I definitely feel a close kinship between their sound and Cranes, not just the vocals but the atmospheric element of the instrumentation as well.
I think about too.
just thinking the same thing!
Was thinking the same!
Yes! Or the singer from Swallow.
Made me fall in love with Cranes again
YES. First thing I thought when I heard this.
@@jordanlaframboise4308 same, and led me to Cranes 2008 album that's been in the world 14 years without me knowing lol

Love the unique sound and what a voice. Love it all.
This set was a banger. Loved it

I just found out about this band with their latest album, and they are a new favorite. Just brilliant.
They will play in my hometown for the second time this year on Saturday for free outdoors. And again in the winter in a club. Very Nice indeed.
Wow - great intense sound with a lot room to dive in. Great to hear that you used the last 4 years for trying new sounds and Still will be on my personal this year's single charts as Pigs was in 2018. Looking forward to see you in Munich on october!
damn that’s a POWERFUL tambourine at 3:46!!! now i have a new group to fawn over ccc:
love to see great new bands coming from ireland :)
I miss Cranes and I love this band
So underrated!!!!!!!
saw them at Empty Bottle this year, incredible band.
Saw them open for Fontaines D.C. a couple months ago. Good stuff!
These guitars sound fucking awesome. So glad I know about these folks now.
They’re gonna be big
I love it when new bands to their 90s homework. This is what happens when Radiohead and the Cranes have a baby. So good.
Sounds like Health! I love it!
My new favourite band! Greetings from CDMX

They have some pretty gnarly sounds. Refreshing
Amazing band!
These dudes are badasses
would have loved to hear them play 'deaf'. they sound amazing!

This song sticks with you ❤ such a fun groove.

My new favorite band.
Impresive live sound, props to the band and the sound engineers!
Bass was a little weird for Still but yes I agree.
these guys are super exciting!
Great band, saw them this weekend at Tramlines festival. They are truly unique. Shout-out to the guitar pedal manufacturers that help them get their guitar sounds.
Some extremely negative comments here, I love her vocals, easily the most defining element of their music.
people don’t realize that the off-key singing is meant to be on purpose lol 😭 it’s probably not for everyone but i think it gives it this super eerie and cool effect
@@show._bug yeah it's a bit on the edge, but I get it's for the style
If you can't handle this why are you listening to KEXP? Just stick with your local top 40 station.
It's obvious that it's a stylistic choice if the listener pays attention. In the second number of this set, she clearly sings a conventional melody with ease at the beggining.

Troy has the best selection of bands for Kexp!
So stoked for this
amazing
I couldn't quite get into their live sound, but I checked out the album versions of these songs - I liked them!
Cranes vibes here. I'm all for it.
Just like mustard you either like or loathe and for me this is complete and utter KRAP
Supposed to be seeing them live tonight but sadly Katie is sick... Nice timing KEXP, this will tide me over waiting for the reschedule!
Yep they just rescheduled a couple hours before their belfast concert tonight :'( i'm not mad i'll wait to see them again they're excellent
One of our favorite bands from SXSW, D2D, and Glastonbury 🤍
Pretty good....Pretty good. Here because seeing Fontaines DC and they are supporting them. Good sound to compliment DCs
Love that the panning at the end was there

Wow Robert Smith has great taste!

Cranes regeneration 🔥
Loved it
Interesting guitar and bass tones
Shoegaze!!!
reminds me of Autolux in a weird way. The riffs feel borderline sample-y.
Fairly serious joyDivision vibes going on .
i can dig it
the new Cranes!

Saw them when they played in columbus just recently. They fuckin rule
15:40 sound exactly like Health - Die Slow
someone tell me how they make these noises, I want to make these noises
