How has nobody mentioned the fact that James Mercer's vocal performance is flawless?
+Andrew Theis -Just perfect vocals, everything.
i feel like he's so much better in Broken bells because the guitar parts he plays are more relaxed, where as i feel like in some shin performances it takes away from his vocals because he's doing both
James Mercer is sure doing an insane job but the backing vocals are doing just as good in my opinion, it emphasyze James' talent just right and make the vocals part just perfect..
Sie Gurd Indeed!
He's a modern day Paul Mcartney... sorry can't spell it right
9 years later.. still a f**king incredible performance. Dan Elkan, Jon Sortland, James Mercer and Brian Burton you dudes are awesomely talented.
Broken Bells = true definition of Underappreciated.
Because apparently that's just how he rolls
All of the bands I listen to are underappreciated. Silverchair, Floater, hed pe.....I did these guys. Just found them ☺️
Their songs are something unique. One of the kid
totally
I just recently heard the song Good Luck, and was blown away. Had to save that song and here I am. What a killer band!
0:18 After the Disco
3:52 The High Road
7:59 Holding on for Life
11:17 The Angel and the Fool
7:59 = perfection.
They're even better live, holy shit!
They switched instruments...because they can. So envious of that kind of talent.
Haha my band used to do that. Just not to this proficiency… or close.
I couldn't believe my eyes at first. I was like, What?! These guys are awesome 🙂
I need broken bells Number 3. they are the single best music project. Brian and james music personalities are amazing on their own, but they go so well together, the sinergy powerful .
This is pretty amazing. Brian Burton is a genius and he adds a lot of enhancement to the recordings in studio. It's really impressive that they can recreate their sound live. Their songs are well written and they are both major talents. What a band.
you ever heard of Muse?
It's not fair. Mercer has the great voice, the guitar skills... and even his whistle game is on point!
Can't stop listening
Every single song was perfect. I've listened to this so many times.
holy fuck his voice live is amazing
This has medicinal value. It's a live performance and you know you sing along cause it's true what he says.
only the best band that was and ever will exist
Terriblemente Bueno!!!
Broken Bells is my best music discovery in the past 5 years or so. Enough said.
Jane Doe - I enjoy them quite a lot...have you checked out Purity Ring? Stupid name, amazing music.
I can take it one more step, found Broken Bells and God is an Astronaut both yesterday on Radio Paradise, I call that a very good day.
I like James Mercedes’ acoustic stuff alot
Mercer
4 years later…. It still is
I’m convinced KEXP is the best radio station on the planet.
This band is so versatile. Lush spacey production on the albums, then tight minimal performance here. Really speaks to the musicianship of James and DM
Excellent whistling
Man, I love these versions!
I am listening with my daugther and in my deep I am leading to hear this great band.Underated by the way
James Mercer and Andrew Bird should do an album together of just them whistling songs.
i was just thinking there should be a benefit concert of great whistlers where they all engage in whistle-offs, so there would be james mercer and andrew bird and nick urata from devotchka all whistling furiously at each other
YESYESYES
Love both!
oh my god yes, youtube recommended both these guys to me, they're on fire right now!
Omg yesssss
Probably my favorite rendition of After the Disco
PES 16 soundtrack :)
wow, I think they sound even better live than on the album. This less "produced" sound is really good (the album is good too, but IMO it's better in this "live" sound situation. Not even a need for overdubbing of anything, it just sounds fantastic).
You're so right!
Agreed, but I didn't think the mix on the album was very good. May be why it sounds better live.
They're so musically proficient this comment makes total sense.
@@kindking8009 Also take into account that KEXP is notorious for their unbelievably good audio engineers
Just a joy to hear James go high. It seems like he saves his high notes for big moments.
Anyone else stoked for the new music???
For some reason I can't get into The Shins, nor has Gnarls Barkley (other than Crazy) ever done it for me.....but Broken Bells is fan-bloody-tastic, a perfect melding of James' and Brian's talents. I love both their albums, and hope for many more.
bellerophon30 I agree. Haven't been able to get into the Shins, so far. I do like Gnarls Barkley, but Broken Bells is on a completely different plane, as far as I'm concerned. Absolutely love this band.
jsramsey26 Man, I love all three, but wincing the night away is a classic album, IMO.
Boo Radley To be fair, I probably haven't given the Shins enough of a chance. I'll keep listening.
+bellerophon30 really eh? Shins got a pretty big selection, throw on wincing the night away, and drift off to sleep tonight. its fairly diverse, I wasn't big on them till I listened to that album through.
That's because this producer is a freaking Genius. He makes every song unique and tight.
Very underrated. LOVE THEM!
They are so good. How are they not a household name? Their music moves me.
Love how we can just play paper, rock, scissors at each song change to see who gets to play drums, bass and keyboards.
fucking love that whistling solo in Angel And The Fool.
Osian Jones Melting.
this is pretty awesome. They sound way better live than I would have expected. Wish this set was a bit longer though
Danger mouse is a badass and James Mercer is a god
Aeoster Wonder if Drew Burkek is an alias for James Mercer- wouldn't be out of character:)
Nice teaser, with angel & the fool. I look forward to album 3. you GO!
An amazing performance!
James Mercer's falsetto is amazing. Flawless perfection.
Absolutely agree. I remember the first time I heard The Shins while watching Garden State; and just loved it. As.themovie was over I IMMEDIATELY Googled the sound track because I just had to know more about the band.
unreal. how does this music NOT make millions? And that which does is rubbish.?
I wonder the same thing but I'm glad that the commoners are content with their garbage.
mark packham I realize your comment is a year old but I couldn't agree more. Pop music today really sucks
You know what they say about the eye of the needle.😄
mark packham totally agree with u 👍🏼
mark packham Hey guys, at least we have this great taste in music!
This is so weird. I was on Twitter, did a search for #brokenbells (Greta Van Fleet's new single, just released today) and I kept seeing Tweets for this band. Had to check it out and I really like them. Yay! New music to listen to!
You know why he looks so serious? The continuous Kevin Spacey joke that nobody will let die... you have killed him softly...
Flawless
nicely done, mr. spacey.
Alright, only now I found out that James Mercer is the same guy from The Shins... Now I love it much more. THank you KEXP!
After years loving The Shins, I just now found out James is in this band! Immediately searched and found this as my intro - and not disappointed!
I admire Broken Bells more & more each time I listen to them. This is a beautiful performance. So unpretentious & economical, and yet masterful with fully formed beautiful songs played & sung perfectly.
This is amazing. James Mercer's voice live is wonderful~
No way! So glad they performed on your station!! I'd love to have them perform here in Utah. I don't know if I could attend though, too much social anxiety. I've never been to a concert.
The two other guys were great! Even the host was great. Talent city.
Cheryl Waters,
To do what you do...would love to be in your position. Great host!
amazing sound quality. i'm pleasantly surprised.
+chaosinorderrr Typical for KEXP
+Pancho308 Indeed =)
Omg i hit my screen thinkin that was really a fly 😂🤣
One of my favorites. Been coming back to listen for years now. Love the band but this particular performance is perfect.
How come I’ve just discovered this band? Flawless music
the songwriting of James Mercer with the talent of all these musicians is astounding, what an incredible group. Gorillaz level of wow-factor talent and incredible songs
James Mercer is one talented SOB.
Jon sortland on drums kills anything he plays/ touches. I'm so happy he made it. He's a true musician and James is one of the coolest guys I've met. Great band, good people
I really like broken bells, I even got a tattoo that has art from their record
I'm from Brazil
this performance is fucking sacrosanct 🙏
James Mercer's voice is so orgasmic. Danger mouse is versatile as fuck
anyone know anything about james mercer's tanning habbits? homeboy is glowing
That Portland sun
I recently discovered this band and can't stop listening to their music. Hopefully there will be more music in the future...
Been listening to this band since the album first came out. Even so, somehow the lyrics seem more appropriate now than ever before. Truly wonderful.🙏🏻
Thinking all bands should have an accompanying acoustic album alongside their main..Holding on for life sounded awesome.
Everything sounds better on KEXP.
Why hasn't this just BLOWN UP yet??? Love this!!
didnt play their best songs.... Mongrel Heart and The Mall and Misery
Marc Everds this is advertising their second album
i love how the whole band just casually switches instruments for the second song
Two of my favorite musical artists. I saw them live in Tucson and it was incredible and so was this video. Thank you KEXP!
Damn, can it get any more perfect than this set? Perfect vocals ,lead and backing. Kick my ass!!
Is it just me or have they not realeased the angel and the fool on spotify??
Zeds Dead has the best remix ever of Holding On For Life
214,505 views, that's all? This is a great!
That man can sing
They can all sing!! Pretty sure they have 3 tenors in this band. I think Danger Mouse is in the lower register.
Broken Bells is amazing! Keep coming back to this performance, it is great. Might even prefer it to the album.
I think he would be the first and only one for me who i would visit in a live audition.
What an incredible clear voice :o.
Its obvious he is doing this with heart, not like pop trash who exists only for making money :/
Hands down the best Indy band ever. I always get goosebumps listening to them.
Get a grip on yourself.
profd65 4 years later and I still haven’t got a grip on myself 🥲
@@imalright2837 lol
I always liked the High Road when it came out and last night I hear Holding on for Life...these guys are good !
If a video of Broken Bells live is as good as this... then I don't even know how I'm going to prepare myself for how amazing they must be ACTUALLY live. October 24 and 25th can't get here fast enough--Los Angeles, get ready!
How was the shows?
They’re amazing! Incredible performance.
Odd silence after the first song, like waiting for the audience applause that never came! Really like these guys, just such a cool vibe with their songs and so many really, really good ones.
jackasses for playing each others instruments...I can play the radio, internet, the occasional cd. good backup vocals boys. of course the rest of the performance is spectacular as well
Having a lot of trouble trying to comprehend what you're saying. Are you trying to make a joke? are you saying that they shouldn't use each others instruments?
William McCarthy he's saying they're talented enough they can play other instruments other than just one when he can use the internet and radio real well. It's a compliment out of jealousy
Today I heard the new album Into the Blue. Today I became obsessed with this band. Just perfect, so creative
Great stuff - Seriously talented. Setting myself up to go down in flames, but the live version of After the Disco loses a bit, compared to the recording, I think. I miss that big, lush synth in there. Regardless, what a voice, and the harmonies are fabulous. Horribly underrated and under-exposed band.
I really like them. I had to look up the shins because pandora keeps playing them for me but I definitely like Broken Bells better
Best version of this sone : 7:51
When the singers still sound great when theyre ACTUALLY LIVE. Amazing stuff guys! I cant stand modern pop lipsync trash, youre a breath of freah air
essa banda é muito boa, achei que nunca iria encontrar mas uma banda assim nos tempos de hoje
Even if you hated space rock, Alt Rock, you could appreciate the part time Broken bells. Imagine if they concentrated on Broken bells music 100% of the time.
and he whistles like a freakin' angel!
Amo esta banda.
Huh. Wonder why they cut a chunk out of Holding On For Life.
did I totally miss it or none mentioned the percussionist or second singer/guitarist?
poor guys lol
Denis Urbanczik Right? They are all multi-talented guys... it must suck to be in a band that doesn't acknowledge that you are in that band.
Dan Elkan is a huge talent performing With many other artists.
Dan Elkan has his own band, Them Hills. Their last album, Dad Disguise is fantastic.
They know what they were getting into, they’re live musicians. They’re not the brains
2018, still great
that guitar sound dont have remind me of bigmouth strikes again by the smiths, a tip of the hat to the great johnny marr,
Fantastic band, few people understand how powerful these songs are but I'll give them time...
this is so good , they are unique together
Wow!! Fresh, Clean, Solid, Love the Harmonies..Dig it..Looks like I found a new favorite for the playlist..
Shout out to the lady interviewing them, top notch.
One of my all time favorite bands. Great collaboration chemistry.
so good
The Weekend totally ripped off After The Disco last summer
What a...the two first sounds better in studio version ,sorry BB but this is i think here
this sounds so close to heart
