@@TheOnlineViolinTutor where does the dots go if it's a 1/2 violin?
@@TheOnlineViolinTutor can you put measurements for third position too please?
I bought a violin a couple of months ago and I was frustrated because I couldn't find a tutor!! Until I found you!! YOU'RE AMAZING! You explain everything very, very great. Thank You so much! Blessings from Puerto Rico!
how are the violin lessons coming out now?
How are the lessons now?
Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you soooooooo mcuh ! You are the reason why I bought the violin because you really teached me how to play it ! Your practice videos really really helped me alot thank you so much , I really wished to find a video such as this and again when ever I search about the violin it's always you ! Thanks so much for the effort you make !! You deserve alot :*
Mohanad Abdul Wahab thank you for your nice comment.
The Online Piano and Violin Tutor thank you so much this was so beautiful and funny 😍
Just got my new violin today, yay! Bridged it, rosined it and dotted it. Thank you for the dot measurements. Tuned it by the 4th dot from G... so easy now.
Your videos have been of great help to me. I am learning the Violin all by myself and I literally feel like I have a personal tutor watching your video ❤️❤️❤️
This helped sooo much considering I'm not taking real lessons, thank you!
i just bought my very own violin today because of your videos. very informative and direct to the point :)
I’ve watched every violin for beginners video on RUclips. You are the only one that makes any sense to me. Much appreciated Miss sparrow. Subscribed to your channels. Bookmarked your website. Buying your books. The very definition of a teacher. 👏
I watched the lesson 1 before this and was wondering how to measure to put the marks. Great teachings even after 9 years since upload
Many violin tutors skip the dots, so without the dots, finger muscle memory was delayed. Thank you Alison for helping in this early process of notes.
I’m getting a violin for Christmas and had to hunt for stickers small enough. Thanks Alison 💜 this is super helpful
Hello. I'm getting a violin for my birthday to teach myself through these videos. How is your progress going so far? Best wishes, I hope you enjoy learning the violin!!!
1/8 inch pinstripe tape used for cars works great also. You can get it where they sell auto parts or order it on line. Its stays on the violin for a long time and easy to remove, won't cause any damage to the frett board. I cut a piece that goes across the 4 strings
thank you so much for saying what they are in centimeters. because I couldn't find anybody else who would give that measurement.
Hey - I just wanted to say that I went to place to take lessons, and they put they stickers in the wrong place. I had been playing the violin wrong for a while. Your video seriously helped. Thank you!
thanks so much , bought my stickers yesterday... My violin arrives tomorrow. Now, i know where to put the dots :)
From where did u buy stickers?
The online piano and violin tutor thx so much I just got my violin a few days ago and u have been a great big help
Oh my god! I feel touched when I saw this Video that explain me when the mark should place on ! Thank you soooooo much !
Well my first week down and I have been watching your videos like crazy. I was going nuts trying to find a way to figure out how to place my fingers. Thank you so much! Being stationed away from my family this has given me something to practice and show my kids that hard work will pay off.
I picked out a Fiddlerman violin for Christmas, this is going to be so much help when it comes in 💜
Yes!! Finally someone giving measurements! Upgraded to a full size and been looking for where to put my fingers! Thanks so much, subbed and like
Thanks. I've recently returned to the violin after 12 years of not playing. I got to grade 5 but my intonation is now shocking and I am back in an orchestra :o I'm giving in and adding stickers until I pick it up again!
I never had particularly good intonation, but since adding them I've found that I've trained my brain to think that a flat 1st finger on each string was correct. I was shocked at how far down 36mm is :o I would play the 3rd more in tune, because I had the g string to reference to on the d string and the 4th finger the next open string, but my 1st was always flat. Maybe I should have kept the stickers longer or my teacher should have put them back on when I was younger. My 'muscle memory' was wrong because I was listening for the wrong pitch!
Thank you Allison! This was really concise, informative, and well explained.
You are a lifesaver! I've been looking everywhere to find out where to put finger placement stickers, thank you so much! Subscribed :-)
thanks especially on where to put the dots on the violin easy to follow
Finally a proper video about placement. Thank you. :-D
You ate breathtaking
This helped so much! Thank you :) I can't afford lessons right now so I've been watching your channel a lot
This is amazing, really such a basic lesson full explanation!! Thank you
I really like your videos, I am looking into getting my first violin, your videos are very helpful in helping me make my decision that it is something I want to do :)
Really a great teacher! I have always been wondering how people put their fingers at the right points (it was really quite confusing, specially for someone had not played the violin at all)
How about double checking the position of the dots with a guitar tuner (fret the note and see whether the tuner says it's spot on)? Obviously this only works if the open strings are perfectly in tune, but... that's what they should be anyway. :)
Yes, but for those who dont, or want to go out and buy one, they have these measurements and the whole process is free.
I'm not sure if you've mentioned this in other videos, but I've been playing for 4 months now with a teacher and I'm still playing with stickers. When do you usually remove the stickers if you're dealing with an adult student with musical training + decent intonation?
when ur clear with the finger placements
Thank you for this video.
I shall apply them today to my violin..the music shop was hesitant to give me the stickers cuz they said it might ruin my violin..I think they meant the glue marks when I remove them? I'm applying them anyways today it's a student quality..I'm getting nowhere if I don't do it 😊
you make everything easier ... i love you ♥
Here's a conversion for us yanks...
1st tape or dot 1.47 inches (just short of 1 1/2 inches)
2nd tape or dot 2.67 inches (just over 2 1/2 inches)
3rd tape or dot 3.22 inches (just under 3 1/4 inches)
4th tape or dot 4.25 inches (4 1/4 inches)
I used car pin stripe tape to do this. The 1/8" size tape is perfect for this. I was going to use dots but was afraid they would move around after a while and fall off.
Thank you so much for making this!! Really helpful
Thanku so much🤗 love from india🇮🇳
Great video!!!
Greetings from Brazil!
You are awesome. Exactly what I was looking for.
Thanking you soooo much for your wonderful and thorough info.TY
This was great help!! Thanks!! But I have three questions for you!!
1. How much was the bow you usually use and the bow that was extremely light?
2. How much was your violin?
3. And what are all the instruments you play?
I play five including the violin and piano!! :) violin is my newest and I'm just at a level two or so, but I'm at a level 10 in flute. Teens rock!!
1. cant say
2. cant say
3. violin, piano, pipe organ, electric organ & keyboard and im at professional level on all 5.
Thank you for your videos 🙌❤️❤️❤️
I am watching your videos again. On a new instrument I play 12th half-step, then I play down from there and up again to hear and feel where the positions are, and I let the muscle memory do the rest. Which certificate is better, Hill or Baere?
Thank you so much for these measurements! Could you please also tell me the distances from the nut for dots beyond first position?
Thank you so much god bless you
I have a 4/4 locally made violin. But when I followed these measurements, the tune is not right. When I do the 3rd finger placement on G string, it gives me a D flat. So basically it is half step higher. Can someone help me with this. Thank you
I'm sort of in a similar bind , what did you do to fix it?
Hi, I really like your videos, I want to know how long should I use the finger placement measurements
VERY GOOD VIDEO I have looked and looked for this info.
Thank you for this video. Helps out!
Hi Alison. Just wondering, when you don't need those stickers anymore, would they leave a sticky fingerboard or even damage it in some way because of the glue? Are them specially designed for violins, or just regular stickers you can buy at any paper shop?
When you want to. When you feel you can. You will then have to start relying on your ear.
Well you see them on my violin and my violin is worth thousands and thousands and im still happy to use them. I get the from stationary shops.
I think those stickers are great. I had them when I was younger and after awhile of playing they disappeared and magically I found no use for them anymore because my ears/fingers had memorized the pitches. These spotted stickers are better than tapes imo, less invasive.
Thank you both for the feedback! :)
Hello. There is a thing I don't quite understand, and I wish you could clear it out for me. In the video where you talk about the second finger you say that it has to be either really close to the third or to the first. However, here the dot for the second finger is quite far from the third dot. I'm wondering which is the right position to put my second finger.
Thank you very much for these wonderful videos!
***** Oh, sorry. I've just found that you've already answered this a while ago.
+asCii88 SAME question ! Would u answer me too ?
Aaleen Aamir Tnx Aaleen ! So when she puts her finger on the 2nd finger's dot it goes next to third finger ?
Where do u put the dots on a 3/4 violin?
So what about the 3/4 violin .???.. i need to put some dotes and i have the 3/4 one ^^
Thank you for your videos BTW :)
tasneem ibrahim Try a google search?
The lengths are given in the description
Thank you so much miss !!! Can I use a tuner to calibrate more ?
I played now over 2 years with a lot of help from these video's. I'm still using a cheap violin. Never used stickers until today, because i never could get the tone right. The violin isn't that bad, it stays very good in tune. But what i noticed is that the first, second ... Fingers on each string differs from each other. For example An A on the G string is 33mm, on D string it's 35 on A string it's 36 and E string it's 38mm. The strings i use are dominants. But the question here that i have is, should these be on the same level? Because some other video's showed straight lines. I know it could be because of the violin, if they should be straight, is it possible to tweak the violin a little?
Stick one small dot in the middle between the D and A string. It will be enough for you to work on intonation from there.
Thanku so much mam
Love from india❤
My daughter has a 1/4 size violin (most children will be using smaller violins) where can I find the correct measurements for a smaller violin??
I played violin for two years a few years ago but now i want to pick it up again, would you recommend the Stentor II or Cecilio CVN300? Thanks!
Spot on! Excellent vid
Thank You. Madam. Very very Nice 🙏🏻👌👌👍👍🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻👌👌
Thanks, really appreciate the help.
Thank you so much I love you girl! Your so awesome!
Is this measurement work for the 3/4 violin too?? thank you
Hai Alison i just wanted you to know that I really consider you my teacher. love your work .thanks for uploading these videos
Helped me a Lot. Thanks.
I couldn't find measurements for FOURTH position. There are even no stickers available.
PLEASE can you provide measurements for fourth position???
The same measurements would not work as the notes get closer as we go upwards.
Thanks a lot.
There are no measurents for 4th position as by the time you are playing in 4th position, you shouldnt need them!
thanks my violin its 4/4. i love you so very nice.
Fantastic, thanks for posting this :)
Hi Alison, please clarify for this newbie, the 36mm is from the end of the ruler or the start of the measurement on the ruler aligned with the ridge at the bottom of the nut? it is 6mm from the end of the ruler to the start of the measurement markers. I hope this makes sense...
Do I dnot mention where it starts from in the video? I made this a good while ago so I cant remember.
I got it now. Watching another one of your videos gave a closer look at your ruler and it appear your ruler starts the measurement right at the end. This all makes sense now. As another Brit friend of mine would say, "Forget the Noob question!"
I LOVE YOU FOR THIS!!!!!!
Great video! I'd like to know what those distances are for 1/16 size violins -- I suppose it could just be figured out by ratios?
Mandolin1944 I dont know. The vast majority of my subscribers/watchers have full size violins. Try Google.
thank you. you helped me a lot.
U could also use the electronic tuner to find the finger placement from the corresponding note, right?
+operoverlord1984 Dont see why not, but probably not the best way to learn as you will then become reliant on it rather that using your ear.
I watched one of your old videos a few months ago where you explained where to put the sticker dots with the help of a piano and just by ear. I have put in 3 stickers as I am still on the third finger but my positions don’t match with yours in this video so which one is more accurate? I do play your videos on repeat and play with you the exercises and they sound quite the same.
Put your 3rd finger on the dot on the A string, and play that note with the open D string at the same time. The 3rd finger should be in tune with the open D (make sure your open D is in tune). If not, then adjust your 3rd finger/dot until it is.
The Online Violin Tutor thank you so much
Thank you!
Is it possible to find measurments for other positions?
yes but we dont really work them out through measurements as it gets really complicated. The higher into positions you go, the more they overlap and then it becomes a huge dot fest!
The Online Piano and Violin Tutor
Oh, thank you, I see!
I want to play in positions, but in traditional Irish and Swedish music it is in only 5% of tunes.)
For example, Martin Hayes plays great using first position only, but sometimes it is interesting to play "higher".)
So, it should be learned "by ear"?
I'm quite new to the violin, but my question is it G-E or E-G on the marking?
Can u plz tell the dots to be put for a 2/4 violin...is it the same as this?
thanks, this really help me "A LOT"
Ma'am, I want to know the exact point of "F note" on "E string" in 4/4 size violin. Can you please tell me the exact measurement from the ridge?(just like you do in this video)
What size dots stickers do you use I've tried the don't fret but ripped up the sticker when trying to peel off the adhesive. My goal is to at least get some finger placement stickers before I start learning.
Just those little dots you get from stationary shops.
Mine are about 8mm:

Hey, can you tell me how many cm should there be between the first two dots? I need to be 100% positive that I did it right!! Thank you for the lessons, you're a life savor xxx
All measurements are under the video.
Do the dots go in the center of the violin or underneath the second sting?
Much Appreciated.😊
What size dot sticker would you recommend, or doesn't it really matter? Would 8mm be ok? Thanks. :)
I don’t know the precise measurement. Just those little ones that come in a pack at stationer shops.
I love you for this video!!! THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH! Oh and one question if you don't mind, but do you think Suzuki brand violins are good for beginners???
BertJane Perez I have never seen or played them, so I have no idea. Sorry.
But.. how to put the diy stickers on 3/4 violin? The milimeters used will be different right? This is a very informative video by the way, thank you sooo much ❤
You might find some information on the internet.
@@TheOnlineViolinTutor okay, thank youu 😄
Hi, I have a question. Does putting stickers on the violin's neck does damage to it? should I use a special kind of stickers? Thank you for the tutorial.
No, not if they are the little dots like the ones Im using here.
Hi Alison. I just bought my 4 year old daughter a 1/16 violin. Do you happen to know the measurements for that size? Thank you so much! 😊
Unfortunately, no. Sorry

ahmed tarek I have well over 400 free videos with tutorials for just about anything you could possibly want to know on the violin on my channel, if you take a look :)
only another small question im sorry but i want to know what is the no. which is 1234..
ahmed tarek it is the finger numbers. 1 is the index going through to the little finger which is 4.
Thanks, this is helpful.
Very useful :D thanks!!
Ugh I'm even more confused now... I haven't played violin for about 10 years now and I want to start again but I removed the tapes a long time ago and I want to put new ones on. I've been looking around for fret measurements on the net and I get lots of different numbers from each places I look at and I don't know which one is the right one for my violin. My violin Scale length is 32.6 cm. One site says: 1st at 3.5cm, 2nd at 6,6cm, 3rd at 8cm and 4th at 10,7cm. Another site says: 1st at 3.6cm, 2nd at 6.7cm, 3rd at 7.9cm and 4th at 11cm. And you also give different measures so I have no idea what to go for now.
are there any of the premade full layout stickers that you can recommend, or what to look for in a good one?
Dont buy them would be my advice. You dont need them and you should not be learning with them.
Im going to assume you are learning to play from my '1-30 Violi Course' so all the relevant information surrounding this is all in that course.
I've never played violin before so was wondering if the finger dots were just the frets of the violin
Sort of. Just fewer of them.
do the sticker dots leave any marks behind when you take them off.?I dont want to harm the violin
aaron mcintyre its fine. I have them on mine all the time - for video purposes and it doesnt leave anything.
Weird question, but I recently purchased a Cecilio CVN 300 full size violin, and my first finger note is 25mm. Consequently, the next finger measurements also differ from what you wrote, but the spacing (the millimeters BETWEEN each finger) is consistent with yours. I measured my violin, and it is a full size 4/4 violin. So my question is, why is my first finger measurement from a G note to an A note 25mm and not 36mm??
I don’t know. Maybe your finger is in the wrong place? I can’t see the violin, so I couldn’t say what’s going on without seeing it.
Hi, I think you might be tuned down 1 octave - I did exactly the same on my first day & the gap measured 25mm like you - make sure your A string is A4 440hz , G3, D4. E5.
My first finger dot slipped from its original place. I tried to put it back but it fell off because it had lost its glue. Could it be that my violin is secretly telling me that I should take the dots off? :P
You have a wonderful channel and thanks a lot for this video. I want to ask something. I have used a chromatic tuner to tune my voilins G string (196hz) then tried to place my sticker using the chromatic tuner but I noticed something strange. My A3 note is not 36mm, more like 31mm. I have checked the tuning again just in case and no errors. I have a 4/4 violin and i have medium tension strings (D'addario). Is string tension have anything to do with this?
if its in tune, then leave it.
The Online Piano and Violin Tutor
Thanks a lot for quickest response ever on youtube :)
Onur Konuralp welcome.
Do you have any tips on slurring between strings? I can change strings just fine when I change the direction of bow for each change, but when I try to slur them, it sounds absolutely awful. Especially when I'm slurring to an open string, it's really scratchy. It might be partially due to the fact that I'm playing on a sub-$100 violin.
possibly, but without seeing whats going on, Im not sure i can help. This is the sort of problem that i really do need to see whats happening to help. If you can get a little vid over to me then i can help you.
