Play the game, watch other people play the game

Well, play the game normally. If you're gonna play Melee start with the event stages, they're perfect for training. If you get stuck then play classic mode. The trick to getting better at any fighting game is to keep playing and watching others playing. You may notice that other players use a certain attack combination. The trick is to watch carefully and try to replicate the same technique. The game gets real fun when you get the hang of it. Good luck and don't push yourself too hard.
