Personally, I always thought the HECU were a multi-branch group, probably a mix of Marines, Air Force, and Army personnel and vehicles, which would explain the mishmash of equipment and terms they use.
Same here. My thoughts were that the HECU was mostly Marines, but contained some of the other branches as well, like Army Rangers, Green Berets, Air Force Pararescue, Dombat Controllers, Navy SEALS, etc.
They are Marines, but the cover up was a joint operation between the Marine Corps, Army Air Corps (I believe it's called), Black Operations, and possibly the Air Force.

Great video. You speak my language and have an excellent commentary voice. It’s wonderful to have a few uniform and equipment minded buffs making videos nowadays to reach and educate the younger upcoming fanbases. It’s just my opinion, but I really think it would have been great if Valve had given them the “T-pattern/T-Pat” the urban camo that our USMC actually trialed in the 1999 Urban Warrior exercises. You covered this well. The camo fatigues shown here are nothing more than off the shelf commercial “urban” pattern that were never really considered. Anyone interested in this, google USMC T-Pattern. It’s fucking, awesome. The only people we ever see wearing this “urban” camo in the U.S. are trailer trash and angsty teenagers who aren’t sure what scene they’re going for yet. Our T-Pat went on to inspire MARPAT, but the truth is, we stole the “inspiration” from the Canadians.
For us nerds; I think these guys would be either their own independent rapid response force attached specifically to the Black Mesa facility, possibly in the position to call upon the US Air Force for support. I mainly lean towards being their own force with members being recruited from the US Marine Corp since for the most part Gearbox never seemed to know what they were talking about in terms of armed forces branches in their expansions and there are no references to HECU being part of any US armed forces branch in the original Valve game but its still hard to ignore the boot camp and instruction manual diary from Opposing Force. Also if you want to imagine the HECU with more depth like that I think the Valve weapons load out makes more sense as it seems more suited for their special role as a urban and indoor combat focused force. The M203 and the extended 50 round magazine for the MP5SD for example, it makes sense. That said, great video, loved it.
They are likely a joint operation, it's the only way to explain the mishmash of equipment and tactics. It's implied in OpFor's prologue that HECU were mostly deployed for rescue missions, and didn't see much combat outside of Black Mesa.
i mean, the first infantry grunt model, like all the way back before their body armor was black, had a USMC tattoo so they seemed to always wanted them to be some sort of Marine, so theres that

Looks like the engineers and medics have two M18 white smoke grenades. These are hard to come by, but Inert Products, LLC has a pretty good replica The highly irregular MP5A3 they use is very distinctive. The magazine holds 50 rounds in-game, but the model is clearly the standard 30-round magazine. If you want to match the mechanics, there's a drum with the right capacity. If you're going the replica route, Tokyo Marui has an airsoft version. The grenade launcher is meant to be mounted with a PI mount, but on the model it just hangs off the handguard, connected with nothing but air. Whoever made this model clearly didn't understand how either of these weapons worked. RM Equipment reportedly makes a conversion mount, but their site doesn't appear to have been updated since c. 2006! Your other option is to rail mount it if you can find a handguard you trust to hold the thing up As to the other weapons, the SAW is an M249E2, and the M4 is a Colt 727, which you can approximate using an A2 upper, polymer 3-stage blade stock, CAR-15 handguard, and straight pencil barrel
@@officialromanhours Well, in a way it makes sense. They weren't fighting in some far away country in an empty desert. They were fighting in close quarters in a fully supplied facility on their own soil with a proper country infrastructure. The logistics are much better in such a condition, and the distances aren't that great. The whole event didn't last that long (I think 1 or 2 days?) so the Marines didn't need to pack in MREs, sleeping bags and wilderness survival tools, so no real need for backpacks. So just like SWAT teams don't carry around backpacks because they aren't expected to stay in one deserted location with no resources for days and weeks, so too were the HECU Marines not expected to stay there for long. It was supposed to be a quick cleanup operation, not a long lasting war like in Afghanistan or Iraq. I agree though that they look cooler with backpacks.
Would be cool (and likely not too much hassle) to go into the uniforms and equipment of the vanilla ArmA III factions. Some of it is modern, and some of it seems to be "futurised" current or soon to be released gear, and some seems to just be invented for the game, or based but not representative of something. Regardless while the vanilla stuff isnt too popular with the community, there's some really interesting choices the devs made there and I think it'd make a great episode!
The welding torch is more likely MIG/MAG (type of welding machine) welding pistol/torch, which is actually a welding style that uses various gases, which would explain the gas tank. Torch usually looks like stick lighter.

Stumbled into this video not really knowing what to expect beyond guessing it'd contain a rundown on the differences between in-game models, and distantly hoping it'd mention real-life influences on the games' designs. That this video quite solidly does both, but ALSO contains advice for cosplayers, goes far beyond my expectations. Definitely interesting.

Im gonna say this right now, good luck fitting the gas mask bag to your right leg. Also that was an m42/45 pouch. Which i find the mask fits in better anyway.
Man, thank you so much for this comparison video. No one have noticed all these differences. Well actually i have noticed all these differences between versions since long long time ago, because im a big Half-Life saga fan. I must say i like to modify Half-Life/OpFor, its like a hobby. Not big modifications, only colour palette and few details of faces. For example, i have modified the "updated" version of the grunts to make it look more like the OpFor version, i changed P.C.V color from that ugly gray to the original black color, and same with boots, from gray to black. I have changed the backpack color alsobto make it darker green.
The thing I love about the HECU is that if you think about it, they could be a pretty damn effective branch of the military. In opp force, one marine mentions that they do lots of search and rescue. including the fact that Hazardous Environments is literally in the name, they could be great at 3 things: recon, hostage rescue, and exploring uncharted paths and clearing them when needed, and can do all those things in the ground or air. (which is technically part of recon but...yeah)

It's implied in OpFor's prologue that HECU were mostly deployed for rescue missions, and didn't see much combat outside of Black Mesa.
i mean, the first infantry grunt model, like all the way back before their body armor was black, had a USMC tattoo so they seemed to always wanted them to be some sort of Marine, so theres that
Beautiful Work
Amazing Public Service
Wonderful Kit
Be so much Better if more People Respected The Detail of Factions like This
Their Appearance alone Is Densely Detailed
Thank You
I’ve Been into HECU Recently after Watching some Really Good Faithful Remaster Models
So Adorable
Perfect choice for your first video game uniform video!
:D
Stellar editing and thank you for telling us what the camouflage pattern was. I found that Roth Co makes a set that looks just like the HL ones. Glad you’re doing video game games. I’ll be waiting for the Umbrella USS and UCBS soldiers from RE2 and RE3 remakes.
I'd absolutely love to see a breakdown of the uniforms seen in the 2nd Leersog War mods for Ravenfield - they're brilliantly done interwar style uniforms - though I understand it's not exactly a well-known series
As always, the amount of research is staggering! No doubt this video will be invaluable for anybody wanting fo cosplay as one of these guys. Hope to see some more of these videogame episodes in the future. Great job!
Could you do The Soldier/All The Mercenaries from TF2 in honor of Rick May?
Yes, TF2 uniforms would be nice!
That would be big
Cuz he latterly wear every single military uniform in the history
He even wears armour of Japanese samurai
@@majortom1155 I would imagine he would restrict it to the default uniforms only. Sorry I had enough faith in the averages persons intelligence to think someone would infer that.
@@RoachDoggJr2112 I think soldier default uniform is close to the US army in world war 2
@@majortom1155 No... it's really not at all...
Just as I am getting into Half Life you put out this video, awesome
It has been some years since I played Opposing Forces, but if I remember correctly, the player (Shephard) is called Marine by some of the NPC's. I could be wrong though :)
Shephard was a marine. In the intro it says right in front of the screen. lol
@@user-no3tu9kh3p At least he gets to order other grunts in the game.
@@user-no3tu9kh3p What did you expect? The game has limited mechanics.
@@Jalide he orders around Privates, Private First Classes and Lance Corporals, but takes orders from a higher Enlisted (Like a Sergeant) and the N.C.O who seems to be the operation leader or one of them.
@@TylertheCC1010fan Yep the officer with the green beret that ordered him to get in the chopper when they were evacuating was higher rank than him.
designing game uniforms right now and I love this content. I loved half life and I really wish there was more content about the HECU before now
Fun fact the marines also had woodland and desert camos as well
Oh boy, just stumbled on the channel, I'd love for you guys to cover more video game uniforms, like Doom, Halo, or even some of the Warhammer 40k games.
Nice video, dude.
... Ya know... seeing a vid on the Replica soldiers from the FEAR series would be pretty cool too.
These boys are so underrated
Just found your channel from being recommended the marriot carpet video, awesome channel guys!! Ive always wanted to learn more about camo, and you guys are the perfect resource! Keep up the great work 😄
Looks like the engineers and medics have two M18 white smoke grenades. These are hard to come by, but Inert Products, LLC has a pretty good replica
The highly irregular MP5A3 they use is very distinctive. 2006! Your other option is to rail mount it if you can find a handguard you trust to hold the thing up
As to the other weapons, the SAW is an M249E2, and the M4 is a Colt 727, which you can approximate using an A2 upper, polymer 3-stage blade stock, CAR-15 handguard, and straight pencil barrel
You should to the Black Mesa security guards next! Great video, subscribed.
"HAZARDOUS Environment combat unit"
*Wears fingerless gloves and rolls up sleeves*
Glad Black Mesa addressed this. Looks cool though.
Only thing I dislike about BM Marines' visual design is that they have no backpacks, it just feels weird to me
@@officialromanhours Well, in a way it makes sense.
Great, I've done some shitty basic cosplays for hecu but now with all this info I can finally have the correct layout of their uniforms
The welding torch is more likely MIG/MAG (type of welding machine) welding pistol/torch, which is actually a welding style that uses various gases, which would explain the gas tank. Torch usually looks like stick lighter.
Didnt even think this kind of video would exist - so happy I checked it out on my recommended list!
Just started replaying this again last week, great timing!
Man, this video is a 100% perfect investigation work. Im a big Half-Life fan so i nhave found this video ULTRA interesting. Thank you for this
Ideas for more video game uniforms:
-MGS1 FOX-HOUND Next-Generation Special Forces
-MGS2 Gulurkovitch Mercenaries
-Resident Evil S.T.A.R.S.
-Resident Evil U.S.S.
-Resident Evil U.B.C.S.
You forgot the MGS3 KGB, GRU, and Ocelot Unit.
Collab?
Can’t wait if it happens!
Projects after quarantine:
1. HECU Cosplay
I know the video is a little old but I think a good game to do the uniforms of is Full spectrum Warrior. It's got alot of stuff the US wore during the Iraq war so the uniform bits might not be hard to look up and purchase but I'd love to see a detailed video like this one. I absolutely love them
Hey, I really liked this video! I'm actually doing an HECU cosplay myself. Since you're doing video games now, one Uniforms Of The Screen episode I would like to see in the future is the Black Hand from Just Cause 4, as they're super cool looking and I might eventually do a cosplay of one of them as well.
What would you recommend to use for a vest?
@@Wilhelm_Larperr I have to look into it. The Black Hand use light blue plate carriers with pouches on them. It would have to be custom most likely.
Black Mesa's version would be nice to look at. if it also gets released soon the Operation: Black Mesa (the Source mod remake of Opposing Force) it would be interesting to look at those designs as well.
I wish you guys had a separate channel for construction of some of these costumes. I’d love to see a tutorial on the PCV or nylon leg straps with the mp5 mag holsters
6:16 Well, that's one way to do the 👌 (okay hand).
How is this you guy's first time doing video game stuff????? the quality in this video is insane! I would've thought you guy's done the video games category for years If you didn't mention it, excellent job!
Loved the video ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I loved the running freeman on the bottom 4:42
Great job! Please do a video on the Ghost Recon series! Especially the earlier ones :)
Joshua N. Ajang thanks, but that wasn’t helpful at all. I’ll keep holding out for Uniform History!
Properly cosplaying these guys must be a nightmare...
this is cool. would love to see one on the various metal gear games. always wanted to know what the Gurlukovich soldiers wore...
Good stuff!!! I hope you do get around to covering Black Mesa's interpretation of the hecu
Awsome work on the topic, like always 😎
The thing I love about the HECU is that if you think about it, they could be a pretty damn effective branch of the military. In opp force, one marine mentions that they do lots of search and rescue. including the fact that Hazardous Environments is literally in the name, they could be great at 3 things: recon, hostage rescue, and exploring uncharted paths and clearing them when needed, and can do all those things in the ground or air. (which is technically part of recon but...yeah)
Fascinating video, very interesting suggestions for the gear, I really like that!
Thanks for the help i finally got all the gear together and got the desert eagle. When i get to basic tomorrow the guys are gonna FREAK
Pretty sure the "Decay look" ammo pouches on the belt are actually Vietnam era M1956 ammo pouches.
Interesting video, about idea for next video, you can cover Combine soldier uniform from Half Life 2, in my opinion its design is pretty unique and quite iconic too.
You should cover the Sequel Game, Half Life 2, and the unique uniforms used by both Rebels, and Combine units in the game
Best Video yet
Where i was a kid this game made think that Desert eagle were issue for special force.
It would be very interesting to see you cover the uniforms of the imc marines from the first titanfall
You guys should definitely do more video game related content, this is a great video
Excellent content. Thank you very much for your hard work, sir.
Never knew you did a video on this. Most of the stuff that they would wear is stuff like the Alice and pasgt system.
You are a hero.
CBT, Mr. Freeman 😈
In celebration of its triumphant return to Netflix, what of a video exploring the uniforms of Stargate Command (though most of it would just be the same service uniforms as the Air Force)
Blast from the past right there. Wow!
LETS
GO
RECON
Thank you for this video, this perfect for anyone who wants to make cosplay of those uniforms soldiers
great work chap! if you ever feel like doing another one for game, i recommend a rather unorthodox but probably fun one to do, which is the rebel army of metal slug
1:02 shhh we never speak of that one
I just found this channel and I love it! Please cover the Black Mesa remake versions of the HECU too!
