Thanks for this inspiring update Jonathon on the Kia E Niro 4+ yatch blue 2021. We have exactly the same car colour and year but although we have Octopus they do not recognise the new RAC installed Hive chargers we have so we cannot get the 8p rate. Even so charging in the day with panels helps. Even though we spent £375 on rapid chargers this year and charged at home for 10,000 miles using home at around 24p per Kwh it has still worked out as 0.67 per mile. Bought my 4+ in June, so 1 month after you. I have to agree it's a fantastic car. Decided to keep it beyond 3yrs as does everything I need a car to do brilliantly. Not had any issues in the 3+ years, just three alloys changed under warranty due to the dreaded white worm which I've found is a Kia / Hyundai known issue. Never had an issue with the 12v. Saying that, my Leaf is 4 1/2yrs old and never had an issue with that 12v either.

I have an eNiro4+ I took delivery in Dec 20. I would recommend the Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2 tyre, I find it quieter. Over the four years I have done 65k miles and love the car. My only complaint is the slow charging on long road trips. I plan to replace it with the EV3 late next year.
Interesting stats in spreadsheet. As a fellow Blue 2021 E-Niro owner. Just mine has a mere 16K on the clock. Worst range 290 miles, best 324 on the GOM. Which is pretty much spot on for me.
The MPGE of EVs is something very few of the anti-EV’ers take into account when decrying EVs, Even my AWD new Mini Countryman S E can easily exceed 150mpgE and mostly it’s been getting 180mpgE this summer. I like watching channels like Out of Spec and love it when they show huge American pickups that in ICE form might see 15mpg on a good day but in EV form see 80mpgE regularly and even on a bad day 1mile/kWh is still 40mpgE!

The latter feature is especially good for me as a wheelchair user to help me access tricky chargers like the older Tesla ones.

Our dealer even said to us, “give it 4-5000km and you’ll see it increase and top out.” I guess it’s to do with the chemistry and charge / discharge cycles. But really I have no clue…
Hi, these really are great cars. In my first year of ownership July 23 - Jul 24 the cars long term trip says 7900 miles at 4.7m/Kw which I think is fantastic. Like you during the summer 300 miles of range is easily achievable. I'm ashamed to say I had missed your video on the tyre noise as I recently took mine in to Kia thinking I had a wheel bearing problem as I was getting a noise. Kia don't seem to be aware of this issue as they said everything was fine including the tyres. I took it to a tyre specialist and they said the wear was ok but and the tyres were safe but slightly distorted and they had seen a lot of ev's especially tesla's with this problem they believe due to their weight. My tyres are still at 5mm so I don't want to change them and only 2 months ago at its service I had the tracking checked which was also ok. I know these aren't the best looking ev's on the road but with the features in the cars and the range from only a 64Kwh battery I don't understand why they aren't more popular.
Great video having had the E NIRO myself I agree with your thoughts. It would be interesting to know the state of health of the battery at that 40,000 mile stage. The best range I managed out of mine in the summertime was 329 miles. Photographed to prove it.

You didn't mention wear on the brake system!
Quite a few have suffered reduction gearbox bearing failures. Mine had a complete new gearbox and motor fitted under warranty just before I bought it last month. Several other models such as the Hyundai Kona have the same gearbox and issue. I believe the 12 volt battery issue was partly addressed by a firmware update a year or two ago (changed when 12v is charged from the HV system). I'd be interested to see what battery state of health Jonathan's car has. Fortunately mine is still reporting 100% after 90k miles!

My wife gets 35 mpg out of her petrol Qashqai. That's 16p per mile. My Leaf costs 3p per mile for electricity using Octopus Go plus a bit of peak rate electricity. Interestingly the Qashqai is only 50kg lighter than my Leaf E+, but that's with no petrol in it. With a full tank they are about the same weight.
My ENiro 4+ has made a proposed purchase of an EV3 a very trick decision. The Niro still does what I need it to do and the EV3 is just not a compelling buy as it doesn’t do much more than my existing car and is so expensive. With an extra cost for a heat pump and no V2G/H capability ( which is available on EU spec cars) the EV3 just didn’t have appeal to me as an energy store on wheels for my home. Hence the EV3 sale didn’t happen. The E Niro is just a great car.

Hi Jonathan, I noticed you mentioned purchasing outright after your lease ? Do you feel the pricing was based on what the vehicle was worth at the time or what it owed the finance company ? I’m thinking those two pricing methods could give different results in a volatile market. Was it easy to buy after the lease ended? Reason being we’ve just taken delivery of an EV lease car and like it so far.thank you 😊
Don’t go for Michelin tires they were on my new Niro and I got very poor mileage from them less than 20000 miles. A lot of people can't get an EV tariff, me included, because our "smart" meters will not communicate due to a weak WAN signal, I'm not even in a particularly remote part of Caithness. I still pay less to charge two cars (one is my son's Ioniq Classic, he was quite smug when you said you've averaged 4miles/kWhr!) power and heat the house and swimming pool than I did just to put petrol in my last ICE, but an EV tariff would save me £1500/year and it's really p*****g me off!

I never need to do that petrol filling thing, stood in a rainy cold petrol station, handing over a hundred quid for a few days worth of smelly "dinosaur juice".
Hi Jonathan, Great video, lots of useful information. I drive a Toyota Prius Excel 2020 PHEV, a very efficient vehicle, whether charged or not, with 110 mpg over 33 months/ 42, 000 miles I have owned the car. I would like to know your thoughts, what if you had the Kia Niro PHEV, do you think the cost of owning the vehicle over the same 3.5yr/39,000 miles would be the same or more than the EV? Thanks. I'm Dayo.
Would love to know what traction battery degradation, servicing costs, any fault fixes under warranty or not. I'm looking at buying a Kona EV , 2020 reg, around the £15k mark, just worried that the warranty has only one more year so it's a gamble, also means when I come to sell it won't have any warranty so will depreciate badly. I'd love the Niro 4+, it has everything except a heads up display. Where best to get one, Kia dealers are dearer or go to a supermarket, cheaper, yes. Still under warranty though. If anyone knows of a fair priced one in dark blue or white, let me know.
The main thing to check with the Kona is that it doesn't have any outstanding recalls, they should have had a battery coolant change done as a recall but some of the leased ones didn't get it done, although it can still be done for free which is actually very handy as it's quite expensive to have done at the 40k service! There have also been some cases of wear in the reduction gearbox, it's rare but has been known, quite simply there should be no transmission sounds at all under acceleration just the very slight whine of the inverter/motor. Regarding battery degradation, our Kona at 3 years and 40k miles, will happily do the return trip down to Inverness without a charge on route. That's 242miles and we tend to arrive home with somewhere between 10% and 20% SOC, no measurable drop in range as far as I can tell. Quite a few Premium SE round about 40k miles on Autotrader at the moment for under £15k.
Thank you for such a comprehensive reply. I'd prefer the Kona at say £15k but my head says I should spend another £3k on a Niro4+ to get that piece of mind warranty, ah decisions ...
@@no-oneman.4140 I know what you mean, our Kona is going back to Motability soon at the end of the lease. We tried the new Kona but to be brutally honest it felt like a step backwards, so I'll be after either 2021 Kona or e-Niro to buy outright to replace it; both cars have their plus points with very few negatives. I'm not actually bothered about the warranty side of things, the battery just isn't a problem, motor/inverter/gearbox a minimal risk; suspension and brakes are just the same as any car.
Johnathon, do you think it would be worthwhile leaving the 'geo-tab' in place for as long as you have the car, or is the 'geo-tab' no longer supported, because there wouldn't be many people out there and able to collect the information you are doing, which would be invaluable over the coming years, don't you think. Personally, I'd hook it up again, great review :-)
J P As we are all aware the Labour want to tax EVS due to lost fuel tax hope they don’t see this or we will be crying as they will want the £4K you have saved, They have set up car tax for next year. Me think EVS are going to be taxed by pay per mile to make up for lost fuel tax. Cars are only going to be for the rich moving in to 2030.
Any government will need to do something to get revenue in now people are switching from fossil fuels. I'm sure motoring will get more expensive in the future so it really pays to have an EV now to maximise the saving potential.

I would like to know your thoughts, what if you had the Kia Niro PHEV, do you think the cost of owning the vehicle over the same 3.5yr/39,000 miles would be the same or more than the EV? Thanks. I'm Dayo.
Hey John, does the 4+ have cooled seats too ?.
Yes 😉👍
Would love to know what traction battery degradation, servicing costs, any fault fixes under warranty or not. I'm looking at buying a Kona EV , 2020 reg, around the £15k mark, just worried that the warranty has only one more year so it's a gamble, also means when I come to sell it won't have any warranty so will depreciate badly. I'd love the Niro 4+, it has everything except a heads up display. Where best to get one, Kia dealers are dearer or go to a supermarket, cheaper, yes. Still under warranty though. If anyone knows of a fair priced one in dark blue or white, let me know.
Hi , tune in next friday 6pm for battery state of health 😀 😊
I suggest starting with car gurus. There's over 50 e niros under 20k on there currently.
Could you put comzuption in kW/h
I do in the video
Johnathon, do you think it would be worthwhile leaving the 'geo-tab' in place for as long as you have the car, or is the 'geo-tab' no longer supported, because there wouldn't be many people out there and able to collect the information you are doing, which would be invaluable over the coming years, don't you think. Personally, I'd hook it up again, great review :-)
Yes My Nero EV camera gets fogged up and its not quite central so relying on it to reverse you end up slightly squinty !
J P As we are all aware the Labour want to tax EVS due to lost fuel tax hope they don’t see this or we will be crying as they will want the £4K you have saved,
They have set up car tax for next year.
