As a couple of people mentioned, I forgot to include Joh Yowza and Droopy McCool in the band. Turns out they had gotten put next to my "Max Reborg Band" (the band as if they had been taken over by the Borg from Star Trek) and they never got put back in their proper places. But this might be a good chance to take a look at that video if you haven't seen it: ruclips.net/video/sxa3K-ZZ2E4/видео.html
I actually really loved these displays as a kid in the 90's. I had this one and Cantina version. I thought they were lightyears ahead of their plastic playsets of the detention block, Deathstar pit and Endor bunker they were putting out for a similar pricepoint. If they started producing something similar for $20, I'd buy them and reinforce them as needed. I think there's a market there.
Oh man that KB Toys price tag brings me back. Very nostalgic for the POTF2 series but looking back, don’t love it too much aside from some of the more obscure character choices they made lol. Great video as always sir
Because you do your videos when you have content to show, it genuinely is fantastic when I get my notifications saying that you have a new video, it's something that I really do prep for. I get myself a drink and snacks and then press play!! Thanks for everything that you do.
I had both dioramas, this and the cantina, but I never opened the Jabba's palace display. I love how the unique Han figure looks in the window. There's something about it. It's art. This Han figure looks like it could belong in the POTF2 line, or the POTJ line, it really tied those two together nicely.
I loved the cardboard diaramas. As a kid I had the Kenner Bespin one, the cantina Adventure set with Blue Snaggletooth, and the Land of the Jawas with the escape pod. They never lasted but they were awesome.
I still use parts of this in my Jabba's Palace display. I've replaces the cardboard box throne with the proper throne from 2010, and I use the walls from the recent Walmart set. This makes a nice floor and backdrop still.
Before something like Haslab was even thought to have been possible...these shelf displays took us to that galaxy far, far away...we finally got our Oola AND an interior! Now, if Lucas would have only kept his ridiculous revision of Jabba’s band to himself...I do hate that sequence...
Most people will stick their noses up at these cardboard dioramas and playsets. But they are a great idea for a lot of playsets. And consider if you wanted a LOT of them. You can just fold them up and put them away neatly when you were not using them. Some of the most interesting ones were either hybrids with plastic furniture and props with printed cardboard matte paintings or could be upgraded over time if you got the accessories later. The Millenium Falcon for example was such a Hybrid, though primarily plastic vehicle with a playset in the back. Most people turn their noses up at them today because you can print these sets at home yourself for way less, cost of the printer and media notwithstanding. I liked the idea. I had the Starbird base tower (a Milton Bradley toy). a massive playset that was only cost effective in cardboard. It did not come with much on its own, having a tower and a couple of mini action figures and a rover scaled to the Starbird spaceship toy. There was at least one more spaceship to the collection, a smaller truncated black ship that actually looked like the bad guys vessel more than anything. The Starbird was released after the Avenger a mildly more aggressive fighter ship variant of the Starbird. GIJoe was one of the first toy lines to eschew cardboard playsets and dioramas for big expensive plastic, often not well made, playsets. Star Wars, with their more complicated and expansive sets lent themselves to printed cardboard playsets much more. When Star Wars did do the plastic playsets, they were disappointing limited, out of proportion, vast rooms were now tiny cubbyholes, having only one often not well designed and hard to build right feature and costing an utterly ridiculous amount. But if it was good for GIJoe, surely Star Wars would benefit by it as well. Thing is hybrid playsets worked better for Star Wars in most cases. The whole thing led to me making my own cardboard playsets for much of my childhood. My "masterwork" was an expansive base that could cover a full sized bed with numerous rooms and chambers the right size for most activities in the base. Unfortunately, I never got around to making a proper garage or hanger for my vehicles or teh elevated second level (I actually had no room to store for that addition). For a while I was tempted to make full gaming environments for Warhammer, WH40K, and other miniatures games. But life made that more time consuming than I was willing and finally able to allow.
@@MightyJabbasCollection finally people are getting brave enough to admit that they might have actually enjoyed Star Wars past the originals!! Good on you.
Very interesting video! I would have a slave Leia instead of Boushh, Then you can also have the Han defrosted! And have Boba in there somewhere as well.
I had the Power of the Force Cardboard Mos Eisley Cantina set with the Sandtrooper as a child, and I absolutely loved it! Was the main reason for me to start building dioramas myself. Except I never use cardboard xD
I can tell you really like Jabba :) he has always been my favourite Star Wars character, I always wanted a figure of Jabba as a kid but I never did get one.
personally i have always loved the old late 70s 80s cardboard playsets and miss them now. i still use this playset and the cantina ones for my display.
I had both this and the cantina. At first even as a kid you think you’ve been ripped off-but if properly taken care of it proved a remarkable playset for figures that you could get for very little money.
I've never considered buying this set, even as I do like Jabba a whole lot. I do own the vintage Jabba playset, boxed and never opened up the bagged items. And I do own the Jabba and Han Solo set from the nineties. I do have the Jabba's dancers set, a nice set to use for a diorama. Nice video showing the content of this awesome set! I do like it, has some vintage feel to it...
Had one of these things when I was a kid. In retrospect pretty cheap, but when I was 8 years old it worked well enough. One thing I did with mine was have my dad cut a few pieces of scrap wood to insert in the hollow areas to fill them out. Helped a lot with stability. Also, the Episode 1 "Jabba Glob" was the far and away superior version of the character, lol.
Thanks for these videos, I really appreciate them!! I was one of those dumb kids who sold all my vintage Star Wars toys at a fleamarket at 25 cents a figure when I was 12 or so and now the adult me still has not forgiven myself for that. All I have left from that era is a vintage loose Darth Vader and that's it. :P To me it's a real shame that Hasbro never released a larger plastic playset of Jabba's Palace though and all we were given was that small 3-section display piece with Han hanging from the center wall. :( So I wasn't really all that enthusiastic about that Jabba's 'Palace' or the Tantive IV ... hallway. I love BIG playsets; not a minor section of a playset. :P But I guess for an actual Jabba's Palace playset of any significant size you'd probably need a HasLab kickstarter like that awesome $500 Khetanna sail barge or the upcoming $350 Razor Crest. At least that stuff, while expensive, does trigger my inner child and their massive size just looks phenomenal (provided you have the space). :D Sadly I missed out on the Khetanna kickstarter and when it did become available to us Europeans it was a lot more expensive than the original kickstarter. And ofcourse Ebay prices are even more ridiculous. Still keeping my eye on that Razor Crest though. It's €400 over here for the kickstarter but at least now European backers can back it through Zavvi. I even saw that Australian backers also have a way to get it through a local supply chain. Sorry for rambling but I really like what HasLab is doing and hope to see them making some large detailed display playsets at some point too. I was one of those who wouldn't have mind seeing a Dagobah playset but apparently that one was met with some heavy opposition from the fans. Maybe that's why HasLab suddenly ditched that plan and went with the Razor Crest instead. Unless the whole Dagobah thing was just speculation and rumor. ;) Anyways, thanks a lot for these videos and making me feel young(er) again! :P
1995 to 1999 was my favorite era of Star War Figures for the franchise...They just seemed to know how to make a big deal on the packaging to make it that much more appealing w/o doing a whole lot...I just get don't that anymore w/ action figure those days
I bought this on eBay close to a year ago...👌🏼 I'm going to combine it along with the newer playset that was released and do some customization with everything...👍🏼💯✔
I have the Cantina cardboard set and I think it is amazing. You can add extra pieces here and there, to where you don't really notice it's made of cardboard.
This gave me some major flashbacks. I picked this out for myself (at K-B Toys, believe it or not) and my parents said that they would buy it for me but I would have to wait for Easter to open it up. This was in like 2004/2005, so it must've been on major clearance or backstock brought out to fill the shelves during Revenge of the Sith's run. I remember sitting at the kitchen table building this with my dad and then bringing it back to my room and putting all of my star wars figures in it. I had a ton of just old vintage Kenner figs and potf along with the saga collection Jabba and I had so much fun with this flimsy thing.
I must Streamed this 3 times. I like jabba. & never miss an opportunity to c “other’s displays”. I prefer & here 2020’s hard plastic 3 wall set. Found 2 on line (fairly cheap). On release these were impossible to get.
I actually have this to go with my cardboard cantina but I've never unfolded it. Never quite had a spot. Always thought that Han looks like Lon Chaney Jr.
One thing that you could do to make the cardboard sturdier is to paste a sheet of corrugated cardboard to the backs of the sides, and put polystyrene blocks under the steps to reinforce them. I do this when creating scenery myself, and with a bit of paint, you can make the scenery look very realistic. I have some videos that show how to make scenery like this.
Instead of using tape that will change color over time - you should laminate the cardboard and that would make it stiffer and more durable to play with.
I had the Cantina version. I remember opening it up, partially assembling it then getting frustrated and saying "nope". So it just remained in the box, never used. I think this one looks a lot better than the Cantina set.
I also have the cantina diorama. I opened it when I first got it in the 90s but it remains folded up because I just don't have a place big enough to display it.
You should mount the base to a thin Board to keep it straight and then use clear epoxy to make the cardboard solid. perfect for a display piece. Then I would paint it with clear dull coat to kill the shine.
I got a couple of these when they went on clearance many years ago. Tried making a "clamshell" version of the Carbonite block that would fit a Han inside it out of one of them (didn't work), and kept the other one as-is.
This is the backdrop I originally used in the Jabba's Palace I made, then when the new palace playset came out I trimmed down the cardboard one to fit the new one in,but 75% of the cardboard one is still there, the area behind Jabba and floor mainly.
I really do like this and the Cantina Hasbro made, but agree it needed durability. I have two of these Jabba sets, with one to use with my vintage figures. It should have been made with vinyl like the old Mega playsets were done. A Hoth Echo Base display was also planned, but never made.
I have this display, I have not set it up in years. I got it when it first came out. I used cassette tapes to make the throne more sturdy, I think it was 4, but it might have been six. (yes, I just aged myself).
That piece could be cool with some modifications. Like reinforcing the cardboard print with balsa wood or beaver board. Because as is it appears way flimsy. But I like the newest 1 we got
I bought that same set and actually displayed my vintage figures on it for a while. I had to use tape too. Ultimately it was flimsy and not great. The Han Solo carbonite was a bit meh too but I still have that somewhere
There are a couple companies that produce background scenes for action figures. I'd love to see the big companies release there own offerings for current lines like MOTU, Marvel Legends, DC, TMNT, Star Wars, & GI Joes. Neca would be down with making backgrounds or 3D displays, but they'd probably find a way to incorporate rubbery plastic.
I just watched this now and I think it’s an excellent way to display figures in a cabinet. I would love this, I wish they did some other ones like a Death Star scene or both base. $4.99 what’s that in £, bargain the figure is worth that alone
Provided the price is right, I honestly don't have a problem with this sort of product from a collector point of view since you're just going to set it up as a static display anyway.
Here’s the thing: the play sets don’t really come with backdrops, and cardboard backdrops are the way to add atmosphere to your display, play set or photo shoot. They work like they do in a role playing game. The catch is that the play sets weren’t really designed to pair up with the cardboard sets. It would be better if Jabba’s throne could be placed in the Jabba’s palace diorama. Still ingenuity prevails.
I love this playset I actually used it to make my own jabbas palace 3.75 I used this playset I reinforced everything made the platform for the stairs longer to be more accurate to the movie I used 2 of the vintage collection Jabbas palace playsets and replace the cardboard throne with the newer Walmart exclusive one and then made 65 custom jabbas Palace background characters
You know what I'd like to see, Mighty Jabba taking a stab at 3D printing an area of the palace that we don't get to see! I think if anyone can do it and imagine how it would look it's Mighty Jabbas!
Hi Matt, ur right about that. I know blue prints of Jabba’s palace exist so why not make some of those into reality? Some that could match up with the original “throne” & newer palace play set. Maybe even the exterior kind of like a Castle Greyskull just bigger. Ok, now I sound like Haslab.
I swear that for the solo movie there was a target exclusive one made of a thick cardstock. Hasbro did take another shot at the cardboard playsets in more modern times. What I would love to see on the channel though would be a thicker, more sturdy cardstock one that YOU make. It could be pretty dang hard to do though.
That's a weird Jabba. When I was a kid, the one I bought sat sideways and he was brown... not green and yellow. :( As I watched the video further - your Jabba is SO much better... but still miss that one I had as a kid. =M=
There is an old post on my website about this with a little information (see link below), but basically you have to take a rotary tool or something and gut the insides if you want the head to turn to the side. I don't know specifically what paints I used for him, but I generally use acrylic paints made for miniature painting, so brands like Vallejo and Army Builder (or Games Workshop, but they are more expensive). mightyjabba.com/2009/12/09/repainted-power-of-the-force-jabba-the-hutt/
The artwork is excellent, it's just the flimsiness of the cardstock that is the issue. This could be easily glued onto foamboard sheeting for added stability.
I remember picking these up on Clearence for £1.99 brought two and the opened one sat on my shelf for years. Loved the Han figure and that was worth the price of admission in my opinion. Have we ever had that version of Han again?
to me the only problem is marketing instead of selling it as a 3d diorama that includes a han figure, it shouldve been sold as a han figure with bonus diorama
Love the Marvel Jabba the Hut (as his name was spelled in the comic)! Would it be possible to assemble the set and leave off the cardboard throne? The set may look much cooler with the Kenner throne.,
I bought one here a yr ago it sets up and looks nice but it lacks stability and kinda flimsy but I’m thinking of adding sturdy cardboard but if I do it won’t fit back in its original box and that sucks.
Ok i have some kind of cardboard Jabba palace backdrop, but never opened it. It wasn't sold in stores, I had to order it and I think send in barcodes from opened figures, oh the pain!! I don't think it came with a figure. I sent away for a ghost OB1 also. Let my Star Wars insider magazine lapse in 2011 so I'm out if the loop completely now
If Kenner had used the same type of thick cardboard that 'they' (Palitoy) had used 20 years earlier with the famous Palitoy cardboard Death Star, this set would work/look a whole lot better.
I suppose you could put polystyrene blocks inside the boxes to strengthen them. Nice for a shelf display though. Worth 4.99...18.99? You do get the figure and carbonite block.
As a couple of people mentioned, I forgot to include Joh Yowza and Droopy McCool in the band. Turns out they had gotten put next to my "Max Reborg Band" (the band as if they had been taken over by the Borg from Star Trek) and they never got put back in their proper places. These were close to $20 back in 1998 and that was when figures were $5 or $6 each. These were overpriced for the time and one reason why they flopped.
Cardboard or not, I would have killed to have this as a young kid in the 80s...
I had the cantina one of these, and it was pretty awesome as a display. I had my whole 3.75" collection in there at one time. Awesome review!

I liked the idea. I had the Starbird base tower (a Milton Bradley toy). a massive playset that was only cost effective in cardboard. There was at least one more spaceship to the collection, a smaller truncated black ship that actually looked like the bad guys vessel more than anything. I wish they'd make a big plastic film-accurate Jabba's Palace playset, and a Cantina one, too. Maybe for the next Haslab?
There is a 3D printed playset being planned by Taylab Toys that I will probably be making on the channel. It looks very impressive
Provided the price is right, I honestly don't have a problem with this sort of product from a collector point of view since you're just going to set it up as a static display anyway.
The old saga carded Jabba comes with the hookah and I think the barrier, I wonder how well that fits on this.
That is so cool man
Would u consider actually 3-D printing the base & using the cardboard back drop to make a Kenner like “playset”!?! Would love that.
I don’t know if I would reuse this backdrop but I do really like the idea of making a Jabba’s palace themed version of those Kenner playsets...
That would be cool!
It could be pretty dang hard to do though.
to be fair the art on that cardboard is nice
That's a weird Jabba. When I was a kid, the one I bought sat sideways and he was brown... not green and yellow. :(
As I watched the video further - your Jabba is SO much better... but still miss that one I had as a kid.
=M=
I reinforced mine with Foam board, this did the job and was no longer wobbly.
Very nice! I have one but not the space to display it! LOL!
You did a great job with the Jabba!!! Can you show/tell us a little more? I’ve been thinking about doing something similar with mine! Thanks!!!
What would you like to know?
@@MightyJabbasCollection how did you turn the head and what kind/color of paint you used please. great job!

Thanks for the drummer idea. I wanted to know how to get the head to turn properly.
So is it glued on the body now?
What paint do I get too?
The artwork is excellent, it's just the flimsiness of the cardstock that is the issue. This could be easily glued onto foamboard sheeting for added stability.
You would lose the rear art though....
I love Your video’s
I wouldn't mind a modern piece, but like you said, it depends on the price.
Thank you for this video!
Would you know what the measurements of this diorama is?
I remember picking these up on Clearence for £1.99 brought two and the opened one sat on my shelf for years. Loved the Han figure and that was worth the price of admission in my opinion. Have we ever had that version of Han again?
I wonder if you could mount all of that onto mdf board. Which would give it a bit more durability?
I had that TPOTF 3D Jabba Palace!
Wish i still had mine. Got destroyed after several moves.
Nice fur btw hehe ;)
to me the only problem is marketing
instead of selling it as a 3d diorama that includes a han figure, it shouldve been sold as a han figure with bonus diorama
Love the Marvel Jabba the Hut (as his name was spelled in the comic)!
Would it be possible to assemble the set and leave off the cardboard throne? The set may look much cooler with the Kenner throne.,
Yes you can just leave off the throne.
I recently unearthed my 80's model of Jabbas Palace. The palace itself is made out of that really fragile plastic
i glued the base to form core it helped
I love these star wars toys
Interesting, but I want to see some videos about your "high end" items and rare collectibles.
I suppose you could put polystyrene blocks inside the boxes to strengthen them. Nice for a shelf display though. Worth 4.99...18.99? You do get the figure and carbonite block.
