Tennessee Whiskey - easy strum lesson in 6/8

- Опубликовано: 27 янв 2025
- A basic lesson on Chris Stapleton's version of "Tennessee Whiskey". This is not a performance or meant to be a note-for-note transcription, but an introduction to how to play the groove of the song.
If you struggle with barre chords, skip ahead to 10:25 for a capo version.
Part 2 looks at the song's easy electric guitar intro.

You are the best teacher on RUclips I'm fifty years old and just picked up the guitar again and your just showing the best way to get a hold of the song you're teaching hope that the other people are realizing that
Totally agree
Can't take my eyes off of that beautiful Guild in your hands!! Great work!
this is one of the best lessons I've ever watched
One thing I like about your lessons is that you count out the time. That helps a lot.
You are an EXCELLENT teacher. I'm a tiny bit ashamed to say that I am only now discovering you. :(
In the thousands of hours of guitar videos I have watched, not once has anyone demonstrated the D embellishment of the A. Sweet!
Thanks so much for your lessons. I can't wait to binge-watch your channel!
Indeed! I discovered Dave’s lessons not that long ago myself. A perfect temperament combined with awesome guitar skills makes it easy to follow along to his lessons. Thanks Dave!
THIS is first song that I learn complete, Thank you.!
Five and half years ago, I started taking guitar lessons at the age of 58. I began playing a Squire acoustic that I thought sounded pretty good, at least it got me moving forward. I now have a collection of seven acoustics,4 Gibson and 3 Martin, a Telecaster, and Ibenez ES 335 copy and a Fender acoustic/electric bass. There is an advantage to taking up an instrument when you're no longer a starving student ;-)
Joseph Caputi with respect, what's that got to do with this excellent tutorial?
Nice relaxing lesson. Helps to get the feel of the music. Thanks
I've listened to 4 or so beginner tutorials on this tune...a real favorite of mine...and this is absolutely the BEST. Many thanks!
Forget the song, this lesson has helped me in areas that I was feeling defeated in and unable to do. I struggle with rhythm and this helped me a lot. Thank you!
Thank you, that's great to hear!
I felt the same thing. The 3/4 or 6/8 time is difficult to get. Great explanation
@@NashvilleGuitarGuru i
Very good explanation - thanks
I been playing 5 months ....watched loads of tutorials and some are helpful but the way you explain the beats and how to fill them in and recognise the counting.....makes more sense than any other vid I watched.....i just learnt loads on this vid alone! Thanks for speaking newbie
ive been playing guitar for 22 years, and have forgotten more than i actually know. You sir, are a bonafide instructor and i have subscribed just because of your teaching style, which is straight forward and simplistic....well done.
Learning a ton from your teaching, thanks for going into depth where needed!
Dave Isaac's what an honor to get a lesson I wish that there were more of these but I know you can't do all your lessons for free
Great Lesson, very easy to follow and understand.
Thank you very much, explained the rhythm sections brilliantly and great for rhythm & dynamic practice
Super valuable rhythm explanation!
As always, Dave, you present the song and rhythm very logically and, in the nicest possible way, simply!
Thank you Dave, you are a fabulous teacher / player. From the UK.
Awesome great music song. Bass guitar playing guitar. So sound.
Probably the best lesson I have seen on this song. Very simply and calmly explained. Great stuff. Many thanks.
Very nice and thorough ... and love the old Guild
That’s guitar sounds fantastic!!
Love the way you explain the different strumming patterns. Thought I was doing something wrong but was just filling it naturally. I personally like the 456 456 fill with bass note.
Best video ever. I would buy lessons from this guy
You started with talk about only two chords... I was like hhhhhh..... sweet guitar is probably out of tune etc.
Then I realised I was learning about time signatures and LEARNING!! guitar was tuned and you seem to have a metronome in your foot!
Seriously surprised and seriously grateful for the non ego lesson! Thank you sir!
I have struggled with another song in 6/8 time and this lesson brought it together for me. Thanks
Best guitar lesson I've seen on here, they can be really hard to follow but this was very clear and easy to understand.
Agreed
What a great lesson! Fantastic job, effortless instruction - big time inspiration 👍
This was great. I want to learn more from you. I have been looking for someone that I could understand. Very clear. Thank you. Terry
Thank you Terry, follow my channel for more! I teach individually over Skype as well.
Thank you Terry!
one of my favorite songs....great lesson! well explained.....i'm a 30 year strummer/ picker intermediate level and this fell right into my wheel house .... you are now in my top 3 guitar guru...
can't wait to explore your lessons ... thanks so much
Great teaching. Totally understandable.
Excellent detailed instruction
Great lesson, Dave. I’m also loving the old Guild with mahogany top. I picked up a 1971 last year - really beat up, with repaired headstock, poor neck angle (low saddle and action a bit high), hole in the side from an old pickup installation, plus many other bangs and dings. All of that said, it plays and sounds just great and no worries about taking it camping!
goodness what a great tutorial on the strumming! Thanks so much. newbie here (7 months in) and the counting you gave made it all make sense for me with the strumming pattern!
your a really good teacher!
Great lesson . And an even better guitar . Love that Guild . Sounds amazing . That guitar was born when Guilds were top quality .
Thanks! Excellent lesson.
GREAT explaining the rhythm, hidden gem right there!
A music lesson straight from Music Row in Nashville! Whats not to like! Thank you so much for posting - I will learn and sing it to my wife just like Chris does :)
GREAT very instructives lesson ... thanks to share
I have resisted counting and relied on feel for too long. You are great in showing the importance of counting especially with this song.
As a new beginner, got the solo part down l last nite & glad I found your tutorial on the strumming of the chords, very easy & great the way you explained it all!!! Much thanks & will look for many more of your lessons here!!!💣👍🤠
Best lesson on this song that I have seen. Breaking down the timing was huge for me because I have no natural rhythm.
how can you play music then?
Westwind Survival , I have no rhythm either. That is the hardest part for me learning the guitar... That and bar chords!
Thank you so much! Very clear and concise lesson. Great one on one feel. The strumming pattern breakdown was very helpful.
Man I spent 9 years in Clarksville and always wondered where to go in Nashville for good guitar lessons. A month after moving to Houston I find your channel lol.
Wish I had you on a weekly basis, in person ... thnx bud !
thanks so much for this lesson...as a person who just started guitar (nearly qualified for medicare), this lesson has probably helped me more than any lesson I've tried...great work!
Thanks very much - great video and lesson
Very good guitar lesson. Thanks
I enjoy your brake down as well as the music theory that you give, thank you
Subscribed! Great lesson! Thank you 👍 Stay healthy!
Thanks so much very well explained 👌🏻
I always hated playing the barred B minor cord. I will use the second fret capo suggestion and use the A minor cord to make life easier for my old hands. Thanks Mr Guru.
I love this aong and I love guitar. I really want to learn and this has inspired me to maybe start a new challenge. Thank you for such great explanation.
George Jones did it best
I really like this. Thanks
This was great! Thanks for the backing track and sharing!

This song is what made me buy a guitar and try to learn guitar at 69. 😆 🤣 My family thinks I am 🤪 but I don't care. Love this song.
Thank you Awesome teacher ❤️
Thank you dude, you did a good job on that one!
Nice one. Got a vamp for my accordion in 6/8 now 👍😁🤪

Great explanation of the timing on this
U R an excellent teacher!
Good job Brother!
Great tutorial btw
That old Guild is sick bro!
Thanks for the lesson
Love it, in other words, just feel the music.
You are amazing the way you teach. Thank you for the video.
Thats a very warm sounding guitar, i like it
Solid mahogany Guild D-25, early seventies. I do love that guitar.
Nashville Guitar Guru I love it! I have a Guild D-35 that my dad bought in 1973. Looks very identical to yours and has that same warm tone.
Great thanks bro 👊
It's been said but yes this is helpful and clear, thanks again
so easy to follow, thanks
great lesson
Love your videos, man. Very generous and thorough. I'd love it if you could do one on Anderson East's Lonely for an Intermediate player?
PLEASE it's geNeral and geNerally. And no one told you??? Criminal!!! Great teacher, Dave!
I like your guitar
Great lesson, thanks. The backing track is a great bonus. Made me a Subscriber.
Soon as seen Nashville guitar guru I subscribed
🙏
Great lesson. As a pro vocalist, and a beginner guitar player. It’s hard to get down the strumming while singing. Any tips for that?
Good point. The goal is to really absorb the rhythm rather than just the physical movement of the strum. The strumming pattern is just the way the rhythm is expressed...the back and forth of the swinging arm keeps time, and we hit the strings at the appropriate moments. Take a look at the "Sing & Play" workshop excerpts on this channel.
@@NashvilleGuitarGuru Thanks, TW is even harder to strum,
while trying to sing the runs CS does
Well that's a whole 'nother story!
I have a 1976 Guild D25-M like the one you are playing.
Appreciate your concentration on the strumming. I play with a capo on 2 with G and Am but the strumming is tough. Hard to get that "soulful feel"
You are the best
This great, I am trying to learn guitar, i find this tuturial is great . I Try to understand the tempo , you have 6 beats , but when I we read portion tempos of 77 , it 77 beat per minute , so you 6 beat elapse time will be 60/77 * 6 seconds ? is this right? sorry I am new to music.
Awesome! Thanks!
nice videos thx
Good lesson ty!
Great lesson thx.i went to your like but was unable to download backing tracks. It said unable to locate?Nice Guild also, what model and year?
I will take a look and check the link, thanks for letting me know!
You're a great teacher, I like you ok
Nice old Guild G 37?
Jackaloupes, eh..... Ever been to Dubois, WYO?
Is that a D25?
What kind of nut do you have on a guitar? Is anybody out there know?
Hmm. Is that a tasty Guild D25M Westerly???
