I find your schooling of Dead tunes are perfect thanks
This is an exceptional tutorial. A great tune and one that helps me work in the melodies while strumming. Thank you.
You're an excellent teacher. Your tutorials are clear and detailed. The pace is such that it's easy to follow. Great work.
Best lesson on Ripple. Having listened to a half dozen lessons on Ripple, this one is the clear winner for me. It starts with the body of the song, rather than getting into the minutia of the intro. That way you get the gist right up front. He later fills in the intro but he teaches it from the perspective of the bluegrass form Garcia is playing out of rather than trying to nail down the exact notes. To me, this makes all the difference because as is mentioned in the video, Garcia never played the same thing twice. He was always changing things up. With this lesson there's a lot more freedom to improvise. The approach is to get the feel of the tune and in the end that's all that really matters (to me anyway). He also gives tips on keeping a relaxed feel, which is key, including the use of lite strumming. Bravo!
"..because I'm sure he never played it the same way twice." Astute and well done, thank you
Your singing is really good and helps the lesson bc it puts the chords in context.
Hi Dave, Thanks for this beautiful break down of this American classic. Be well..🙏🏼🌊🐸🇺🇸
Love the "walks" . I know they're basic, but it's been difficult for me to find lessons on walking between chords. Ty!
This lesson is like a master class in acoustic guitar walk downs and walk ups, strumming, and melody playing.
Fantastic lesson, thank you!
Have been working on for over a year from tabs. This really brought it all together for me. Organization of lesson ensured song elements built upon one another. Made connections that I couldn’t see as a beginner. Thanks.
Thanks so much for the lesson Dave....For a person that gets easily flustered learning to play this song makes me want to sit back and relax. Your easy going approach to this lesson really helps as well. Thanks again
very nice. thank you. Favorite song from my youth. Started playing guitar late in life. it is wonderful to find videos like this that break things down so that even an old fart like me i can get it.
Thanks Dave
I just recently got in a band and they cover Ripple and this totally helps me! You are awesome!
God I miss Jerry
Fantastic. Clearest explanation of this great song I’ve seen. Seems simple when you explain it.
One of the best lessons of this wonderful tune - thanks man!!
Great lesson - I am a beginner and I feel I am finally getting it. I am learning to play this for/with my daughter. Thank you.
Edit: I love the context you add to the explanation, about the different influences and styles used by the composer

Cool lesson, love to work on it. Thank you!
Very talented instructor! The most cogent lesson of this song I’ve seen. Thanks!
Thank you for this impressing guide into ripple. I‘m not an experienced player and it was tough for me to follow. But I love this song and so it’s always fun to work on it. You kept me practicing because it seems so easy how you do it and so I try to get some of this laid back atmosphere into my play. Great job👏
Wow. Incredible. Great lesson.

Thanks brother, Love this song! Super fun tune to play along to, thanks for all the simple and clear break downs and your laid back vibes.
I’d be sooo happy if I could do this
trust me you can!
You can! Practice and patience :)
amazing lesson and great performance!
Funny thing . . I heard this in church the other day . . . . our music minister who is a great musical talent overlayed a worship tune on this progression. All the years I have been listening to rock, I never picked up on this one. I had to learn it. I got the progression figured out, but your lesson gave me some ideas for add ins. I had also figured out the melody, but I was looking for a way to incorporate it into the strumming. You covered that too. Beautiful song, and a great lesson. Thanks.
Love this song and the hope you give me that I might be able to play this good enough for me - you played it perfect with great instructions. Thank you very much !
Thank you for your time , talent, and insight, very cool, and for a player that has very little ability is very cool how you break down the music, again, thank you
Nice lesson, thanks.

Very concise, easy to understand and follow. As a beginner, this was painless. It's on my set list as well. I needed something to spice up strum, strum, strum...yawn...

Thanks Dave.
one of the greatest songs of all time.
Heads unite. Great video. I bought an acoustic and an electric...can't play either but tried until my fingers bled
Could be that you needed some guidance, a lot of people chase their tails trying too hard and get frustrated.
FANTASTIC...
Ohhhhh man...... love it!
You're good dude!
Good work!
Thanks, Dave. :)
Thank you
Thank you Dave for the lessons!! I really like the style and philosophy of your teaching method. Is this a Larrivee? Great sounding guitar!! Greetings from Athens, Greece.
Thank you Dimitris! Yes, a Larrivee OM-9, spruce top and rosewood back and sides. One of my favorite guitars.
NashvilleGuitarGuru ... and I understand why!!!
Have you ever been to the store?
Love the guitar! What is it?
i'm not trying to disagree with you, but every time i've seen the Dead play this song, Garcia plays the rhythm strumming and Weir plays the lead melody. i don't recall ever seeing Garcia play this song solo.
just sayin' :3
You know, I hadn't even really thought about what they do live, since so much of American Beauty is different than the way they played live. But interestingly enough, check out Garcia in this one - he does seem to be playing both the melody and chords. ruclips.net/video/5yJmBC7cMTM/видео.html
Hi Dave, simple question, regarding the tab….what do notes in parentheses mean? Im stumped
Notes that ring over the bar will be tied to a note in parentheses, like the open D that rings through the first measure.

Where are the. tabs? Gracias
Whats the strumming pattern here
It's basically a modified boom-chick, bass -- down-up. Think relaxed country feel with some swing.
Thanks for this - the first song I learned to play. I think I will play it better now, thanks to you.
Why Ripple? Is it asong that is about The Ripple wine that was so ppopular in the late 60s-early 70s. I drak a lot and lsitened to a llot of Dead during this time.
You could of been a band member of the Grateful dead any day....Roland
Lifelong fantasy.
Yeah, no A7 there. A.
A7 fits very well there because it really wants to resolve to a D major chord. That's the whole reason they stuck an A major chord in there even though that chord doesn't belong in the song's key (G major); it's leading us to the D chord. You could argue it's more correct to play A7 because including that 7th in the chord really emphasizes the move to D.
Thanks Dave.
